Sustainable, tough, and water-resistant cellulose-based straws via hierarchical fiber networks and Fe3+ cross-linking

Zede Yi,Xuepei Zhou,Juanli Shen,Shiyu Fu

The wide use of plastic straws has posed a persistent environmental challenge, which promotes the development of sustainable alternatives. In this work, inspired by the hierarchical structures of natural materials, we reported a facile approach to prepare straws with high toughness and good water resistance from microscale and nanoscale cellulose fibers. Pulp fibers from rice stalk were treated to prepare cellulose microfibers (CMF) and cellulose nanofibers (CNF), which were hybridized to form a film and roll up for straws. The straws prepared from both micro- and nano- fibers in ratio of 2:3 (CMF:CNF) show the best overall performance in terms of tensile strength (104.5 MPa), toughness (12.6 MJ/m 3 ) and elongation at break (17.0 %). Besides, the straws further cross-linked with Fe 3+ to enhance the network bindings between hierarchical cellulose fibers and effectively improve the water resistance. The ionic cross-linking treatment with 50 mM Fe 3+ for 2 h resulted in the straws with a water contact angle of ∼126°. The obtained straws can completely disintegrate in natural soil within 45 days. These cellulose-based straws are fully in line with the concept of environmental and ecological sustainability.

Worse Interference of Fe3+ than Fe2+ on Degrading the Interphase and Performance of LiFePO4||Graphite Battery

Jiayi Zhang,Suting Weng,Cong Zhong,Jiacheng Zhu,Yan Liu,Qiu Fang,Hao Zhang,Yejing Li,Xuefeng Wang

The detrimental effects of Fe-ion crosstalk on LiFePO 4 ||Graphite battery performance, coupled with limited mechanistic insights into solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) evolution under such interference, warrant systematic investigation. Herein, advanced characterization techniques—including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy—are employed to reveal SEI evolution on graphite anodes under Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ influence. Results demonstrate that Fe 3+ exerts more severe adverse effects than Fe 2+ . Specifically, Fe 2+ primarily promotes conventional electrolyte reduction reactions, increasing H 2 , CH 4 , and CO 2 generation. In contrast, Fe 3+ facilitates radical combinations and catalyzes two-electron reductions, triggering side reactions releasing CO, C 2 H 4 , and C 2 H 6 . The SEI thickness under Fe-ion interference (Fe 2+ : 7.20–13.76 nm, Fe 3+ : 9.12–17.55 nm) significantly exceeds that of the base electrolyte (3.15–7.64 nm), with Fe deposits accumulating in organometallic forms. Critically, the presence of Fe 3+ and its adverse impacts on battery safety and cycling stability are validated in practical pouch cells. This study uncovers the chemical nature of the dissolved Fe ion and its deposits, provides mechanistic insights into its interference with SEI properties and Li-ion battery performances, which in turn helps to mitigate such detrimental effects.

Fluorescent sensor based on collagen fiber-derived carbon quantum dots and carboxymethylated nanocellulose for Fe3+ detection

Kexing Chen,Qifeng Chen,Min Zhu

Detection of Fe 3+ is essential for environmental and food safety monitoring. However, conventional detection methods often require costly equipment and lengthy processes, limiting their on-site applications. To address these challenges, a fluorescent sensor was developed using carboxymethylated nanocellulose (CMCNF) and collagen fiber-based carbon quantum dots (CCQDs). The CCQDs, with a fluorescence quantum yield of 25.04 %, were synthesized via a microwave hydrothermal method using secondary collagen fibers. A selective and sensitive CMCNF/CCQDs sensor was fabricated by incorporating CCQDs into a CMCNF matrix through a simple solution-casting method. The CMCNF matrix ensured uniform dispersion and stability of the CCQDs, optimizing sensor performance. The sensor exhibited a linear detection range for Fe 3+ between 0 μM and 180 μM, with a corresponding linear equation of y = 0.3532 x + 0.6496 R 2 = 0.9932 . The limit of detection (LOD) for Fe 3+ was determined to be 3.84 μM. Excellent detection performance was demonstrated in real water samples, achieving recoveries from 99.45 % to 105.23 % and an RSD below 2 %. The fluorescence quenching mechanism underlying CCQDs and Fe 3+ interactions was systematically explored. This study provides a sustainable strategy for the high-value utilization of biomass waste and offers a portable approach for Fe 3+ detection.

The enhanced photocatalytic activity of TiO2(B)/MIL-100(Fe) composite via Fe–O clusters

Tao Wang,Xiqing Liu,Mei Liu,Runhua Liao,Hongquan Zhan,Xiaoxue Qi,Yongqing Wang,Yanju Huang

Black TiO2 and metal–organic frameworks (MOF) are great materials with light-harvesting ability, redox power and consequently catalytic activity. Here, the integration of MIL-100(Fe) with TiO2(B) composite was designed for photocatalytic application, which greatly promoted light-harvesting and charge transfer. As expected, the integrated TiO2(B)/MIL-100(Fe) composite showed high photocatalytic activity due to unique Fe–O–Ti bonds that were constructed, which acted as an electronic tunnel to reduce electronic transfer resistance between MIL-100(Fe) and TiO2(B). In addition, the presence of Fe–O clusters in MIL-100(Fe) can also promote the charge dissociation and improve catalytic activity via the Fe3+/Fe2+ redox cycle. This achievement would help us to understand and design charge transfer pathways in the integration of MOF/semiconductor photocatalysts.

Enhanced luminescence performance of near-infrared phosphor Y2CaAl4SiO12: Fe3+, Yb3+ through energy transfer for anti-counterfeiting applications

Yunlong Li,Dan Zhang,Taifang Zhang,Lingxuan Zhou,Peng Wang,Vesna Đorđević,Valery F. Gremenok,Miroslav D. Dramićanin,Chonggeng Ma

Environment-friendly Fe 3+ ions as near-infrared (NIR) activators have garnered significant attention in intelligent NIR light sources; however, designing wavelength-tunable and outstanding thermal stability Fe 3+ -doped NIR luminescent materials remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we synthesized a novel garnet-structured NIR phosphor Y 2 CaAl 4 SiO 12 : Fe 3+ , Yb 3+ and investigated its luminescent properties and energy transfer mechanisms. Under 270 nm ultraviolet light excitation, Y 2 CaAl 4 SiO 12 : Fe 3+ demonstrates broadband NIR emission peaking at 803 nm, characterized by a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 107 nm and exhibiting a remarkably high internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 91.70 %, which is markedly superior to most reported Fe 3+ doping NIR-emitting materials. Notably, the incorporation of Yb 3+ ions facilitates an efficient energy transfer process from Fe 3+ to Yb 3+ , which not only significantly broadens the emission spectrum but also enhances the thermal stability of Fe 3+ (I 373 K /I 298 K  = 59.24 %) compared to the singly Fe 3+ doped sample (I 373 K /I 298 K  = 45.30 %). Finally, the optimized Y 2 CaAl 4 SiO 12 : Fe 3+ , Yb 3+ NIR phosphor exhibits promising potential for anti-counterfeiting applications.

Construction of green fluorescent carbon dots with high quantum yield for cancer cell recognition and Fe3+ detection

Bing Liu,Junting Tao,Jiaqi Pan,Chaorong Li,Fu Li,Yingying Zheng

Herein, green-emitting nitrogen-doped carbon dots (CDs) were prepared by one-step solvothermal method. After purified by precipitation and silica column chromatography procedures, the pure CDs had uniform particle size and excellent fluorescence performance. Upon excitation at 430 nm wavelength, the CDs exhibited the maximum emission at 530 nm with absolute quantum yield (QY) of 16.5% in water. The CDs showed low cytotoxicity, remarkable biocompatibility to three cell lines (MCF-7, QSG-7701, EC cells) and good photostability to PH. Besides, different labeling distributions of CDs in cancer cells (MCF-7) and normal cells (QSG-7701) were achieved so that they could be used to identify cancer cell. Moreover, the CDs had good selectivity to detect Fe 3+ ion in aqueous solution. The above hold them have great potential application in bioimaging and environmental monitoring.

N-doped carbon quantum dots as fluorescent probes for highly selective and sensitive detection of Fe3+ ions

Xiangyi Deng,Yali Feng,Haoran Li,Zhuwei Du,Qing Teng,Hongjun Wang

To investigate the effect of nitrogen on the photoluminescence properties of carbon quantum dots (CQDs), N-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were synthesized by one-step hydrothermal treatment using biomass tar as the carbon precursor. As an inevitable organic pollutant, the unsaturated bonds in biomass tar, such as carboxylic acids, aldehydes, and aromatics, are favorable for formation of the graphitic carbon lattice. The obtained N-CQDs are spherical with an average particle size of 2.64   nm and the crystal lattice spacing is 0.25   nm, corresponding to the (100) facet of graphitic carbon. The N-CQDs emit bright blue photoluminescence under 365   nm ultraviolet light, and they have excellent water solubility and stability with a high quantum yield of 26.1%. Coordination between the functional groups on the N-CQD surface and Fe 3+ ions is promoted because of the improved electronic properties and surface chemical reactivity caused by N atoms, leading to a significant fluorescence quenching effect of the N-CQDs in the presence of Fe 3+ ions with high selectivity and sensitivity. There is a linear relationship between ln ( F 0 / F ) and the Fe 3+ concentration in the N-CQD concentration range 0.06–1400   μmol/L with a detection limit of 60   nmol/L, showing that the N-CQDs have great potential as a fluorescent probe for Fe 3+ detection.

Static and dynamic adsorption of arsenate from water by Fe3+ complexed with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane-modified carboxymethyl chitosan

Jiang Changjin,Zhang Shuang,Zhang Ting

Fe 3+ complexed with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES)-modified carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) named Fe-ACMC was synthesized by a one-step method at room temperature and pressure. The surface morphology and chemical structure of Fe-ACMC were characterized by SEM-EDS, XRD, BET, FT-IR, XPS, and ζ-potential. In batch adsorption, the optimum pH for arsenate [As(V)] adsorption onto Fe-ACMC was 3–9 with removal efficiency > 99%. The adsorption of As(V) could reach equilibrium within 25 min and the maximum adsorption capacity was 84.18 mg g –1 . The pseudo-second-order model fitted well the kinetic data ( R 2  = 0.995), while the Freundlich model well described the adsorption isotherm of As(V) on Fe-ACMC ( R 2  = 0.979). The co-existing anions (NO 3 – , CO 3 2– , and SO 4 2– ) exhibited a slight impact on the As(V) adsorption efficiency, whereas PO 4 3– inhibited As(V) adsorption on Fe-ACMC. The real applicability of Fe-ACMC was achieved to remove ca. 10.0 mg L –1 of As(V) from natural waters to below 0.05 mg L –1 . The regeneration and reuse of Fe-ACMC for As(V) adsorption were achieved by adding 0.2 mol L –1 HCl. The main adsorption mechanism of As(V) on Fe-ACMC was attributed to electrostatic attraction and inner-sphere complexation between –NH 2 ···Fe 3+ and As(V). In fixed-bed column adsorption, the Thomas model was the most suitable model to elucidate the dynamic adsorption behavior of As(V). The loading capacity of the Fe-ACMC packed column for As(V) was 47.04 mg g –1 at pH 7 with an initial concentration of 60 mg L –1 , flow rate of 3 mL min –1 , and bed height of 0.6 cm. β-glucan-Induced Eu3+ Coordination Complex with Synergistic Luminescence: Multifunctional Fe2+/Fe3+ Sensing and Flexible Film Fabrication

Jing Wang,Yuanyuan Tang,Yanmin Zhang,Xiangfeng Kong,Yan Liu

β -glucan served as the raw material to fabricate β -glucan-Eu(tta) 2 (phen), effectively enhancing Eu 3+ luminescence by synergistic sensitization. • β -glucan-Eu(tta) 2 (phen) showed selective luminescence quenching for Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ by a static quenching mechanism. • β -glucan reduced Eu 3+ coordination complex cytotoxicity and conferred antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. • Flexible luminescent films retained sensing performance and facilitated visual Fe 3+ detection. This study presents a novel lanthanide luminescent material featuring a synergistic sensitization system composed of β -glucan, 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(thiophen-2-yl) butane-1,3-dione (tta), and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), which efficiently enhances and modulates the luminescence of Eu 3+ . The resulting β -glucan-induced Eu 3+ coordination complex exhibits specific luminescent responses toward Fe 3+ and Fe 2+ , with detection limits (LOD = 3 σ /K SV ) of 1.44 μmol·L -1 and 1.05 μmol·L -1 , respectively. The luminescence quenching mechanism was attributed to static quenching, accompanied by the inner filter effect. Notably, luminescence quenched by Fe 3+ is reversible upon the addition of EDTA, whereas no luminescence recovery is observed when EDTA is introduced subsequent to Fe 2+ -mediated quenching. Furthermore, the antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity of β -glucan-induced Eu 3+ coordination complex have been evaluated. The antibacterial zone experiments confirm that β -glucan-induced Eu 3+ coordination complex has good antibacterial effects on both Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). β -glucan exerts a pronounced effect on mitigating the toxicity of Eu 3+ coordination complex. β -glucan-induced Eu 3+ coordination complex can form flexible luminescent films with carrageenan (CRG) or D4 hydrogel (D4), while retaining excellent luminescent properties, thereby holding significant potential for application in the detection of metal ions in environmental water samples. A Photoswitchable Hydrogel Engineered by a UV-Triggered Fe3+/Fe2+ Valence Cycle for Optically Modulatable Triboelectric Sensing

Zhimin Cui,Yongyun Mao,Dandan Gao,Jiyang Xie,Wanbiao Hu

Stimuli-responsive hydrogels with reversible property switching are highly desired for soft electronics, but achieving this with a single stimulus remains challenging. Herein, a novel PAM/CMC@Fe 3 + dual-network hydrogel is engineered via a UV-triggered Fe 3 + /Fe 2 + valence cycle. UV light reduces Fe 3 + to Fe 2 + , producing a soft adhesive state, while subsequent air oxidation re‑oxidizes Fe 2 + to Fe 3 + , restoring the tough solid state. By simply tuning the Fe 3 + ‑to‑citrate ratio, mechanical properties and self‑healing efficiency are effectively programmed, navigating the trade‑off between mechanical integrity and healability. Taking advantage of this photosensitivity, the gel serves as a high‑performance bio‑ink for photocuring 3D printing. More importantly, its photo‑tunable adhesion enables an optically modulatable triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) as an adaptive sensor. The gel acts as an intelligent triboelectric layer whose output signals are dynamically tuned by light, achieving a peak power density of ∼2.6 nW/cm 2 . This work demonstrates the gel's potential in wearable e‑skin for motion monitoring and robotic tactile perception, establishing a versatile platform from fundamental dynamic chemistry to functional device integration for next‑generation adaptive soft electronics.

Dual-channel Fe3+ detection based on carbon dots and a pH-driven “on–off–on” fluorescent sensor

Decheng Peng,Jun Yang,Xinyuan Wang,Shaogui Wu

To achieve highly sensitive and selective detection of ferric ions (Fe 3+ ), a dual-channel fluorescent sensing platform based on carbon dots (BV-CDs) was developed, enabling both quantitative fluorescence analysis and visual recognition. The BV-CDs prepared via a one-step hydrothermal method exhibited excellent optical properties, with a quantum yield of 25.6% in N , N -dimethylformamide (DMF). Fe 3+ can specifically quench the fluorescence of BV-CDs, and the response is not disturbed in the presence of a variety of coexisting metal ions and amino acids. At the same time, the system can realize Fe 3+ visual recognition through color change, and a smart phone sensor platform is constructed. In addition, the fluorescence response of the system is stable in the range of pH 2–11, and the fluorescence is restored at pH 12, forming an ‘on-off-on ‘regulation mode. Quantitative analysis showed a good linear correlation between the fluorescence intensity ratio and Fe 3+ concentration within the range of 0–150 μM, with a detection limit of 0.17 μM. For real water samples, the method achieved recoveries of 93.9–104.3% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 2.04%, confirming its accuracy and reliability. This study provides a simple and efficient strategy for rapid and sensitive Fe 3+ detection.

Sodium alginate/mesoporous silica composite hydrogel with AIE characteristics for sensitive detection and efficient capture of Fe3+

Peiyao Wang,Xiaoluan Yang,Shuoze Geng,Lei Guo,Guiying Li

The development of integrated platform for the simultaneous detection and removal of heavy metal ions remains critical challenge in environmental monitoring. Herein, tetraphenylethylene-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN-TPE) were fabricated via Schiff base reaction, and then incorporated into sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel for simultaneous detection and adsorption of Fe 3+ . The as-prepared hydrogel and MSN-TPE probe exhibited strong aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorescence, excellent stability against long-term storage, varied pH and temperatures. The hydrogel achieved sensitive and selective fluorescence quenching response to Fe 3+ , with a detection limit as low as 0.460 μM. Thanks to its porous network structure and abundant active sites, the hydrogel also demonstrated significant adsorption capacity for Fe 3+ , with the maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of 383.06 mg/g. Mechanism analysis indicated that Fe 3+ quenched the fluorescence of probe through static quenching, and the adsorption process was mainly driven by the coordination and electrostatic interactions between Fe 3+ and the nitrogen/oxygen functional groups in hydrogel. Combined with simple preparation and excellent anti-interference ability, this dual-functional hydrogel shows broad application prospects in water quality monitoring and heavy metal purification.
