One-step preparation of GO/SiO2 membrane for highly efficient separation of oil-in-water emulsion

Jiawei Sun,Hengchang Bi,Shi Su,Haiyang Jia,Xiao Xie,Litao Sun

The development of filtration membranes with ultrahigh water flux for separation of oil-in-water emulsions by low energy consumption approach is currently an urgent demand. A novel nanocomposite membrane with superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties has been successfully prepared by one-step vacuum filtration of an aqueous graphene/SiO 2 dispersion on a microfiltration substrate. Owing to the addition of SiO 2 nanoparticles , the interlayer space of graphene oxide (GO) layers is expanded, enabling this composite membrane to separate a variety of oil-in-water emulsions with ultrahigh water flux (> 4550 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ), a 2-order-of-magnitude improvement as compared to pure GO membrane, and also superior compared to most commercialized membranes. The proposed convenient, time-saving (< 10 min) and low cost strategy endows possibility of massive production and shed light on commercial applications of water treatment of oil-in-water wastes in industry and daily life.

Interfacial designed multifunctional defense of GO-enabled superamphiphobic architectures for chemical stability and thermal-electrical synergy

Xi Chen,Xuan Jiao,Binrui Wu,Wanbo Chen,Jiahao Li,Yuanyuan Yang,Yaolong Yang,Yuying Wang,Zhengguang Sun,Feiyan Fu

Superamphiphobic coatings are of increasing interest for applications in chemical processing and energy-related devices. Distinct from conventional superhydrophobic surfaces, achieving robust superamphiphobicity requires the simultaneous integration of ultralow surface energy and hierarchical roughness, which remains challenging regarding synthetic control and long-term chemical stability. In this work, a sol-gel-derived strategy was developed to fabricate multifunctional superamphiphobic composite coatings. By modulating the tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) content under alkaline conditions, controlled crosslinking was achieved between 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PFDTES) and polydopamine-functionalized graphene oxide (PDA-GO) nanosheets, resulting in structurally tailored nanocomposite powders. These powders were subsequently formulated with flaky graphite and fluorocarbon resin via spray-coating and thermal curing to produce mechanically robust coatings. The prepared coatings exhibited high liquid repellency toward various liquids (including those with surface tensions as low as 33.4 mN/m), with a static contact angle of 153.33° ± 0.74° and a roll-off angle of 5.79° ± 2.02° for oil droplets. Notably, the excellent liquid-repellency was maintained after 67 days of continuous immersion in concentrated acidic, alkaline, and saline solutions, indicating enhanced chemical durability. Furthermore, the incorporation of two-dimensional graphene oxide enabled multifunctional performance, including an electrical resistivity of 1.21 ± 0.07 Ω·cm, as well as improved thermal response and photothermal conversion capabilities. This combination of superamphiphobicity, chemical resistance, and multifunctionality suggests that these coatings are promising candidates for the protection of critical industrial components, such as high-power electronics and chemical reactors.

Multi-dimensional Cooperative Channel GO/CNT/UiO-66-NH2 nanofiltration Membrane for Efficient Dye/Salt Separation

Hang Yang,Qiankun Sha,Yixuan Wang,Xiaohui Lu,Chang Ma,Na Han

Efficient separation of organic dyes from inorganic salts in high-salinity textile wastewater remains a major challenge for resource recovery. Although graphene oxide (GO) membranes show promise for ion-sieving applications, their practical use is hindered by interlayer swelling, pore compaction, and the inherent permeability–selectivity trade-off. Here, a synergistic interlayer-engineering strategy based on a “skeleton–filler” architecture is proposed using CNT/UiO-66-NH 2 to regulate the GO/substrate interface. In this architecture, carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT-COOH) scaffolds, together with metal–organic framework (MOF) particles, effectively mask the macroporous defects of the substrate and suppress sagging of the flexible GO nanosheets. Meanwhile, the hierarchical interlayer creates low-resistance transport pathways, thereby generating a gutter effect and reducing mass-transfer resistance. Consequently, the optimized GCU-27 membrane delivers a high water permeance of 105.14 L·m ‒2 ·h ‒1 ·bar ‒1 , together with a high Congo red rejection of 99.91% and a low MgCl 2 rejection of 3.60%. As a result, a high separation factor of 1071.11 is achieved. In addition, GCU-27 shows good antifouling performance ( = 88.16%) and stable separation performance during 100 h of continuous operation at 70 °C. This work provides an effective interfacial-engineering strategy and mechanistic insight for the rational design of high-performance GO-based membranes for dye/salt fractionation.

Separating hydrogen isotopic water close to actual conditions by graphene oxide (GO) membrane-based vapour permeation

Yao Xiao,Min Chen,Bangjun Ma,Cigang Xu

The treatment of waste tritiated water (HTO) in the nuclear energy field involves the separation of H 2 O/HTO, and the vapour release process with high temperature heating is one of the proposed solutions. Such process is energy-intensive, membrane-based processes have been studied as the alternative. The efficient separation of light water/deuteriated water (H 2 O/D 2 O), which is often used as a model process for H 2 O/HTO separation, has been recently reported through membrane processes with novel membrane materials or structures, nevertheless, the effect of water feedstock conditions on separating hydrogen isotopic water with emerging novel membranes remains unexplored. Here, the separation of H 2 O/D 2 O with graphene oxide (GO) composite membranes through vapour release close to actual conditions was investigated by vapour permeation processes from the perspective of temperature and vapour pressure of water feedstock: (i) for the temperature of 288 K, 303 K and 318 K,the highest separation factor of 1.40 was obtained under saturated water vapour pressure at 288 K; (ii) for 100 %, 75 % and 32 % of saturated water vapour pressure, permeation fluxes and separation factors decreased with the decrease of vapour pressure. Furthermore, the correlation of membrane structure-separation performance was reviewed with suggested possible ways to improve separation performance. The results demonstrate that the performance of H 2 O/D 2 O separation is linked with the temperature and vapour pressure of water feedstock conditions, which provides a good foundation for developing membrane processes to treat radioactive tritiated wastewater in the nuclear energy field.

Single-layered GO/LDH hybrid nanoporous membranes with improved stability for salt and organic molecules rejection

Yanping Dong,Chong Lin,Shoujian Gao,Narmadha Manoranjan,Wenxian Li,Wangxi Fang,Jian Jin

Graphene oxide (GO) has been intensively adopted as the building block of separation membranes due to its excellent mechanical strength and atomic scale interlayer spacing. However, the practical application of GO nanosheet-based membranes are limited by the swelling and disintegration of GO membranes in water owing to hydration and electrostatic repulsion. In this work, we firstly fabricated a type of layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets, Co(OH) 2 nanosheets, by in-situ growth on the surface of GO nanosheets, followed by coating such GO/Co(OH) 2 hybrid nanosheets on a microporous substrate through vacuum suction to form a single-layered GO/Co(OH) 2 hybrid thin membrane. The electrostatic and coordination interactions between GO and Co(OH) 2 nanosheets are found to stabilize the GO/Co(OH) 2 hybrid membrane in water, and the hybrid membrane shows good resistance to shear force in a pressurized crossflow nanofiltration system with crossflow speed as high as 0.5 m s −1 . With permeation flux up to 17.0 L m −2  h −1 , >91% rejection to inorganic salts like Na 2 SO 4 and >98% rejection to various organic dyes (transmembrane pressure: 6 bar, crossflow speed: 0.27 m s −1 ), the hybrid membrane also survives the challenges of different pH environments, elevated transmembrane pressure and a 60 h continuous crossflow test. Such significantly improved stability from pure GO membranes is expected to enable the 2D nanomaterial based membranes for practical filtration applications in the water industry.

Degradation of norfloxacin by CoFe2O4-GO composite coupled with peroxymonosulfate: A comparative study and mechanistic consideration

Liwei Chen,Dahu Ding,Chao Liu,Hao Cai,Ying Qu,Shengjiong Yang,Yu Gao,Tianming Cai

Magnetic cobalt ferrite (CoFe 2 O 4 ) was extensively investigated for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to generate sulfate radicals. In this study, the CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles were uniformly decorated on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheet. According to the large surface area and more surface oxygen species, the CoFe 2 O 4 -GO composite exhibited much better efficiency than CoFe 2 O 4 for the generation of sulfate radicals. The degradation of antibiotic norfloxacin (NOR) by CoFe 2 O 4 -GO coupled with PMS was comprehensively investigated. Through radical quenching study and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, the active radical species were elucidated. The underlying mechanism was then discussed based on the detected radicals and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) observations. It was revealed that the NOR degradation by CoFe 2 O 4 -GO system was dominated by a nonradical process rather than a radical process. The surface oxygen species at defective sites of GO played a critical role in the degradation process. Finally, the developed CoFe 2 O 4 -GO composite showed a good potential for the remediation of NOR polluted natural river/lake water.

A GO-based biocatalytic membrane prepared by one-step pressure-assisted self-assembly for micropollutants removal

Guanhua Liu,Leijie Guo,Lingfeng Zhao,Liya Zhou,Suoqing Zhang,Yunting Liu,Xiaobing Zheng,Yanjun Jiang,Jing Gao,Lihui Wang

Biocatalytic membranes are a green and effective option for the removal of micropollutants (MPs) from water. The effective immobilization of enzyme together with facial fabrication of membrane is constantly required. Herein, a biocatalytic membrane was prepared by one-step pressure-assisted self-assembly of graphene oxide (GO), polyethyleneimine (PEI) and laccase (Lac) on the surface of hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (HPAN) membrane. The physical and chemical property of membranes, and the immobilization of laccase were characterized. Under optimal conditions, the biocatalytic membrane has a bisphenol A (BPA) removal rate of 95.3%, and the rejection for dyes can be higher than 97% with salts rejection of less than 23% and pure water permeance of 207.4 LMH/bar. Meanwhile, GO-PEI-Lac membrane retained stable removal rate under a wide pH range and feed BPA concentrations. The membrane can also remove various phenolic MPs. In addition, the GO-PEI-Lac membrane retained more than 80% removal rate after 6 cycles. Overall, this study opens up a convenient avenue for the facial fabrication of high-efficient biocatalytic membranes for MPs removal.

A synergistic effect between ZnO/CdS S-scheme heterojunction and GO cocatalyst for boosting photocatalytic performance

Chengsha Huang,Jin Li

ZnO nanosheets , 2D/1D ZnO/CdS hybrid and ternary ZnO/CdS/GO S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst were fabricated by a low-temperature hydrothermal technique. As expected, by investigating the degradation efficiency of rhodamine B under simulated sunlight, with the assistance of CdS and GO, the ternary heterostructure showed superior photocatalytic activity . The test results display that the dye degradation rate constant of ZnO/CdS/GO is about 1.75 × 10 −2 min −1 , which is 3.6 times higher than that of bare ZnO. SEM results prove the finding that the content of CdS can regulate the size and distribution of ZnO NSs, increasing the specific surface area of the sample. Besides, the results of ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) absorbance spectra revealed that the addition of CdS and GO significantly synergistically increased the visible light absorption of ZnO, and also shortened the band gap of ZnO. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and transient photocurrent response (TPR) results show that the presence of CdS and GO synergistically promotes the rapid separation of photoexcited carriers in ZnO. Notably, the GO also further speeds up the transmission rate of electrons and improves the photoelectric stability of the ZnO/CdS heterogeneous photocatalyst. The above changes can effectively promote the photocatalytic performance of photocatalysts. Moreover, a reasonable S-scheme carriers migration mechanism was proposed with the assistance of Mott-Schottky (MS) test, VB-XPS and sacrificial agent experiments. Through comprehensive analysis and discussion, it can be concluded that ZnO/CdS S-scheme heterojunction and GO synergistically promote the photocatalytic performance of ZnO. Therefore, this thesis may provide a deeper insight into developing the practical application of ZnO-based heterojunction photocatalysts in pollutant degradation.

Facile preparation of high performance GO/Mn3O4/PVDF composite membranes with intercalation of manganese oxide nanowires

Han Runlin,Wang Chaoyue,Bi Congcong,Wang Hanli

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) has been widely studied and applied in separation membranes due to its high thermal and chemical stability and mechanical strength. However, PVDF has strong hydrophobicity, resulting in easy contamination of the membrane surface and fast flux attenuation, so it is necessary to modify the membrane surface to improve its separation selectivity and service life. In this paper, PVDF microporous membrane was used as the matrix material and graphene oxide (GO) as the separation layer material. The GO/Mn3O4/PVDF composite membrane was prepared by layer self-assembly of GO nanosheets, and the functional layer spacing was adjusted by nanometer Mn3O4 intercalation. The prepared composite membrane showed high flux and separation selectivity in the filtration of organic compounds. The results showed that the rejection of methylene blue increased from 34% to 99.5%, and the flux decreased from 3000 L m−2 h−1 to 95 L m−2 h−1 when GO nanosheets covered the PVDF supporting membrane. After the introduction of Mn3O4 nanowires in the GO interlayer, the dye rejection reached 99.9% and the flux reached 612 L m−2 h−1. Compared with the unintercalated composite membranes, the flux of the prepared composite membranes showed good stability in the treatment of methylene blue, and the rejection remained unchanged.

Enhanced adsorption and synergistic photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline by MOF-801/GO composites via solvothermal synthesis

Zhihai Wu,Ziying Chen,Jia Chen,Xiaofeng Ning,Pinghua Chen,Hualin Jiang,Hongdeng Qiu

The widespread use of antibiotics seriously affects environmental safety and human health. The adsorption and degradation of antibiotics in water resources are particularly important for environmental protection and human health. In this work, we synthesized a new composite material with a metal–organic framework (MOF) and graphene oxide (GO) via one-pot solvothermal synthesis using zirconium oxychloride octahydrate, fumaric acid and GO. The structural characterizations and electrochemical tests of MOF-801/GO composites were carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Compared with MOF-801, the MOF-801/GO has a smaller electrochemical impedance, a narrower bandgap, and a nearly hundred times improvement in the transient photoresponse to visible light. In addition, the average pore size becomes larger and thermal stability is improved. This indicates that GO provided a good electron transport channel, suppressed the recombination rate of photogenerated electrons and photogenerated holes in MOF-801, and successfully improved the photocatalytic activity of MOF-801. The MOF-801/GO composites were used for the adsorption photocatalytic removal of tetracycline, and the removal efficiency was as high as 97% at 60 min, nearly 30% improvement over MOF-801, and the efficiency remained above 90% after three cycles. This work provides a new approach for the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline in water resources and a new idea for utilizing the good electrical conductivity of GO to enhance the photoelectric activity of MOF.

Synthesis and Electrochemical Performance of KVO/GO Composites as Anodes for Aqueous Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Batteries

Wenyuan Duan,Yanlin Li,Youyang Zhao,Huimin Zhang,Jiao Liu,Yuzhen Zhao,Zongcheng Miao

K0.25V2O5 (KVO) and K0.25V2O5/graphene oxide (KVO/GO) have been successfully synthesized by a chemical coprecipitation method and a subsequent calcination process. The structure and morphology of KVO and KVO/GO were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The as-obtained vanadate and vanadate modified by GO materials were used as anodes with LiMn2O4 as a cathode and saturated LiNO3 as an electrolyte to assemble an aqueous rechargeable lithium-ion battery (ARLB). The cyclic voltammogram curves of both KVO and KVO/GO electrodes exhibited three pairs of redox peaks corresponding to charge/discharge platforms. We found that a small amount of graphene oxide added improved the electrochemical performance more significantly than excess graphene oxide. The as-prepared KVO/GO//LiMn2O4 could not only improve the initial discharge capacity but could also reduce the attenuation at a high current density. Furthermore, the ARLB with a KVO/GO anode exhibited an excellent rate performance and super long cycle life. These good electrochemical properties of this new ARLB system actually provided feasibility for application in large-scale power sources and energy storage devices.

Dynamic multi-level microstructured antifouling surfaces by combining quaternary ammonium modified GO with self-polishing copolymers

Jianang Sha,Rongrong Chen,Jing Yu,Qi Liu,Jingyuan Liu,Jiahui Zhu,Peili Liu,Rumin Li,Jun Wang

Marine biological fouling is the undesirable accumulation on the surfaces of submerged objects and causes environmental and economic consequence to ships and marine facilities. However, traditional coatings achieve antifouling by releasing toxic heavy metal antifouling agents, causing ecological problems. And the static antifouling performance of self-polishing antifouling coating is not good. To overcome the shortcoming, a novel antifouling strategy to build a self-renewing multi-level microstructure on the coating surface was developed by dispersing GO-based quaternary polymer brushes in a self-polishing fluoro/silyl acrylate copolymer . Quaternized GO exhibits excellent dispersibility in the silyl-based acrylate copolymer. A dynamic self-renewing surface is realized for the coating via a self-polishing effect that exposes the filler inside the coating at the surface. The multi-level microstructure of the sharp edge of GO and quaternized “spear” structure destroys the cell wall of organisms. And a “water-shield” on amphoteric ion surface on quaternized GO inhibits adhesion of organisms. The antibacterial and anti-algae tests demonstrated the excellent antifouling effect of the coating at only 0.1% (mass) filler content , with anti-algae ratio against Nitzschia closterium ( N. closterium ), Phaeodactylum tricornutum ( P. tricornutum ) and Halamphora sp. of 83.7%, 52.4%, and 65.8%, respectively. The proposed preparation method is simple and potentially applicable to large-scale production for antifouling application.
