Food pollution has aroused increasing public health concerns and poses a huge medical and financial burden today. Here, we report a facile one-pot synthesis of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S)-responsive near-infrared (NIR) ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobe NIR775/Cy7Cl@HyNPs by encapsulating H 2 S-sensitive organic chromic cyanine dye Cy7Cl and H 2 S-inert fluorophore NIR775 into an amphiphilic phospholipid polymer. Because of the confinement effect of phospholipid layer, the loaded NIR775 and Cy7Cl could be brought in close proximity for fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) to occur, leading to single emission of Cy7Cl at ∼ 810 nm inside nanoprobe NIR775/Cy7Cl@HyNPs. However, with the introduction of H 2 S, the FRET process from NIR775 to Cy7Cl is disrupted due to the stimuli-responsive chromic behavior as a result of H 2 S-triggered nucleophilic, leading to restoring of the fluorescence emission of NIR775 at ∼ 778 nm companied by a remarkable fluorescence decrease of Cy7Cl at ∼ 810 nm, thereby enabling nanoprobe NIR775/Cy7Cl@HyNPs to show a NIR ratiometric response toward H 2 S. As expected, the nanoprobe NIR775/Cy7Cl@HyNPs exhibits a prominent practicability to precisely report the levels of H 2 S in actual food mediums with a wide linear range of 0.0367–120.0 μM, a satisfactory limit detection of 11.0 nM, as well as an excellent specificity over other sulfur-containing substances ( e.g. biothiols). This study emphasizes the promise for utilizing switchable chromic materials to develop a new category of NIR ratiometric fluorescent nanosensors facilitating accurate and reliable measurement in actual food and agriculture-related systems without any pretreatments, which is of great significance for safeguarding food safety and human health.

Cost-efficient, highly sensitive and stable sensing materials play a key role in developing H2S sensors. Herein, tetra-β-carboxyphenyloxyphthalocyanine cobalt(II) (cPcCo) has been successfully bonded on the surface of acidified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (aCNTs) by a facile two-step condensation reaction in the presence of N,N′-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC), using hydroquinone (HQ), p-aminophenol (PAP), and p-phenylenediamine (PPD) as linking molecules, respectively. The obtained cPcCo–B–aCNT (B= HQ, PAP, and PPD) hybrids display good dispersibility in ethanol, which is beneficial to construct uniform sensing devices. The cPcCo–B–aCNT sensors, with a loose network-like structure, present abundant exposed sensing sites, oriented transmission of charges, and unimpeded pathways for H2S diffusion, which endow the cPcCo–B–aCNT hybrids with excellent sensing performance, in terms of sensitivity, reliability, reproducibility, and detection limit. The detection limit of the sensors composed of cPcCo–B–aCNT hybrids towards H2S reaches the ppb-level at room temperature, which is about the same as the odor threshold level for humans. For the cPcCo–HQ–aCNT sensor, the response to H2S varies linearly with respect to its concentration from 20 to 160 ppb and from 320 to 2560 ppb, with the highest gas response of 2.5% to 80 ppb H2S and a low detection limit of 5 ppb. Furthermore, the linking molecules play a critical role in the sensitivity of H2S, as evidenced from the current–voltage characteristics. The systematic study developed here provides a valid way to fabricate other high-efficient H2S sensors.

Rapid and effective hydrogen sulfide ( H 2 S ) detection is vital to ensure safety in industrial environments, where it is a common toxic gas. This study utilized Zn-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as precursors to prepare hollow nanocage structure-like CuO/ZnO sensors. By optimizing the ratio of CuO to ZnO, the resulting CuO/ZnO nanomaterials demonstrated ultra-high sensitivity and a swift response to low H 2 S concentrations. The experimental results show that, thanks to its unique nanocage structure and abundant active sites on the surface, the sensor responds up to 3423 to 10 ppm H 2 S with a response time of only 10 s. In addition, the sensor exhibits good stability, selectivity and low lower detection limit at a low operating temperature of 115 °C, and the lower limit of detection for H 2 S reaches 100 ppb (3.04). Furthermore, the examination of the gas-sensing mechanism exposed the collaboration of CuO/ZnO nanocages in gas adsorption and electron transportation. Remarkably, the generation of p-n heterostructures greatly enhanced the sensitivity and selectivity towards H 2 S , while providing a model for constructing and producing high-performance and enduring sensors.

Fusarium graminearum ( F. graminearum ) poses a substantial threat to global food security, with its impact closely linked to environmental conditions. This study aims to anticipate F. graminearum spore growth across diverse environments and assess alterations in the fungistatic capacity of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) gas in response to environmental variations. The experimental data, namely spore germination ratios, are monitored and recorded at hourly intervals across 100 permutations comprising four distinct temperature levels, five varying pH values, and five diverse concentrations of H 2 S. The investigation integrates three environmental factors as input variables, utilizing a feedforward neural network to establish growth boundaries based on spore germination ratios. The accuracy of models at various stages–training, validation, and testing–is evaluated using a confusion matrix. Logistic regression models are employed for effectiveness comparison with neural networks. Results indicate that neural networks successfully predict F. graminearum spore germination events. Notably, H 2 S does not influence the temperature preferences of spores. Temperature has a more substantial impact on the fungistatic ability of H 2 S compared to pH. The study reveals the adaptability of F. graminearum spores to adverse conditions over time. This research delves into temperature, pH, and H 2 S synergistic effects on spore germination, contributing to predictive models for F. graminearum and enhancing our understanding of how environmental factors regulate its growth.

Adding corrosion inhibitors is considered to be a cost-effective way to inhibit metal corrosion. In this study, we report the synthesis of a bi-mannich base corrosion inhibitor (BMT) with an impressive inhibition efficiency on carbon steel in H 2 S and HCl co-existing solution. At the BMT concentration of 9 ppm, the inhibition efficiency (η) of 96.9%, 97.6% and 98.0% were determined by weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, respectively. The adsorption of BMT on the carbon steel surface follows the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and the calculated free energy indicates that the adsorption is a spontaneous process. This research also delves into understanding the adsorption behavior and corrosion inhibition mechanism of BMT on carbon steel surfaces through quantum chemistry calculations. The results of this study provide guidance for the application of BMT as a corrosion inhibitor in sour and acid environments.

The efficient removal of H 2 S is necessary for clean production and energy safety. However, industrial gases are usually accompanied by CO 2 significantly affecting desulfurization effects. Hence, novel imprinted adsorbents (PMo 12 @UiO-66@H 2 S-MIP-CDs) were synthesized through surface imprinting technology using cyclodextrins (CDs) as molecular scaffolds and UiO-66 modified by phosphomolybdic acid (PMo 12 @UiO-66) as a support. Wherein, PMo 12 @UiO-66@H 2 S-MIP-β-CD was determined as the optimal adsorbent since β-CD with low solubility is prone to keep its inherent cavity to promote dispersion of imprinted polymers and enrich internal pore channels. H 2 S capacity of PMo 12 @UiO-66@H 2 S-MIP-β-CD (31.67 mg/g) was about 2.4 and 1.7 times that of PMo 12 @UiO-66 and PMo 12 @UiO-66@H 2 S-MIPs, respectively, revealing the remarkable contribution of β-CD as a molecular scaffold to improve desulfurization. The results showed that PMo 12 @UiO-66@H 2 S-MIP-β-CD can maintain stable desulfurization efficiency regardless of the presence of CO 2 or moisture, and O 2 can strengthen the redox reaction between H 2 S and PMo 12 accompanied by the increased reduction degree of Mo 6+ in PMo 12 . After five adsorption-regeneration cycles, PMo 12 @UiO-66@H 2 S-MIP-β-CD still exhibited ideal removal efficiency. The excellent desulfurization performance is mainly ascribed to the selective adsorption role of H 2 S-MIP-β-CD and oxidative removal ability of PMo 12 . This work provides a valuable reference for the directional design of high-capacity functional adsorbents for room-temperature desulfurization.

Infected wounds present unique challenges during healing, often characterized by prolonged inflammation and delayed tissue recovery. To address these issues, we developed a composite hydrogel (CAEG), which integrated a hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) donor (GYY4137), carboxylated nanocellulose (CNF-C) and ε-polylysine (ε-PL). This hydrogel was designed to enhance wound healing by mitigating inflammation and preventing infections. In vitro studies demonstrated that CAEG hydrogel facilitated cell migration, angiogenesis, and macrophage polarization toward the M2 anti-inflammatory phenotype through controlled H 2 S release. The ε-PL component provided additional antibacterial effects via electrostatic interactions. In vivo experiments confirmed that the CAEG hydrogel effectively accelerated wound closure in full-thickness skin infected wounds. These findings highlighted the CAEG hydrogel's potential as a promising tool for treating infected wounds by leveraging its dual anti-inflammatory and antibacterial capabilities.

ABSTRACT Osteoporosis (OP), the most prevalent bone degenerative disease, has become a significant public health challenge globally. Current therapies primarily target inhibiting osteoclast activity or stimulating osteoblast activation, but their effectiveness remains suboptimal. This paper introduced a “three birds, one stone” therapeutic approach for osteoporosis, employing upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) to create a dual-gas storage nanoplatform (UZPA-CP) targeting bone tissues, capable of concurrently generating carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S). Through the precise modulation of 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) light, the platform could effectively control the release of CO and H 2 S in the OP microenvironment, and realize the effective combination of promoting osteogenesis, inhibiting osteoclast activity, and improving the immune microenvironment to achieve the therapeutic effect of OP. High-throughput sequencing results further confirmed the remarkable effectiveness of the nanoplatform in inhibiting apoptosis, modulating inflammatory response, inhibiting osteoclast differentiation and regulating multiple immune signaling pathways. The gas storage nanoplatform not only optimized the OP microenvironment with the assistance of NIR, but also restored the balance between osteoblasts and osteoclasts. This comprehensive therapeutic strategy focused on improving the bone microenvironment, promoting osteogenesis and inhibiting osteoclast activity provides an ideal new solution for the treatment of metabolic bone diseases.

Recently, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and phosphine (PH3) have attracted great attention since the observation of superconducting transitions with high crucial temperatures under high pressure, which inspired subsequent investigations of the superconductivity of nonmetallic hydrides. Here, we report the successful photochemical and thermal syntheses of a series of novel H2S–PH3–H2 ternary hydrides with varying H2S and PH3 molar ratios. Raman, infrared, UV–visible absorption spectra, and electrical transport measurements are employed to investigate the chemical reaction and electronic structure transformation under high pressure. The pressure-induced polymerization of PH3 can be confirmed in H2S–PH3–H2 by Raman and infrared spectra, and the polymerization product, P4H6, can be recovered to ambient pressure; additionally, the polymerization pressure of PH3 is evidently hampered with increasing H2S concentration. Furthermore, it has been found that low temperatures can significantly inhibit the pressure-induced polymerization of PH3. The formation of Hittorf’s phosphorus is experimentally confirmed upon unloading pressure from 100 GPa to ambient pressure, which strongly implies the decomposition of P4H6 under high pressure. The H2S–PH3–H2 molecule gradually turns red and is eventually opaque following compression, which is consistent with the red shift of the UV–visible absorption spectra. Furthermore, synchrotron infrared absorption spectra and electrical transport examined above 65 GPa indicate the insulator-to-metal transition of H2S–PH3–H2 caused by dehydrogenated polymerization of P4H6 to Hittorf’s phosphorus.

In this study, the N-Acetyl- l -Cysteine (NAC)-capped gold and silver bimetallic nanoclusters (NAC@Au–Ag NCs) was synthesized by reflux method. Due to the silver effect, the NAC@Au–Ag NCs exhibited strong photoluminescence at far-red/near-infrared regions and better catalytic performance than Au or Ag NCs. Upon addition of H 2 S, the Au–Ag NCs exhibited obvious fluorescence quench and color changes through the generation of metal sulfides and a static quenching process. The Au–Ag NCs displayed a wide linear luminescence response for H 2 S (18.5–217 μmol/L) with a detection limit of 0.269 μmol/L. Moreover, the visible color of Au–Ag NCs changed from white to brown-yellow along with increased H 2 S, the corresponding RGB values also displayed good linearity with the concentration of H 2 S (90.1–678 μmol/L). Notably, the fabrication of test strips provided a convenient and intuitive tool to screen the freshness of eggs by the color change of test strips. Au–Ag NCs could be used for living HeLa cells bioimaging and recognition of H 2 S abnormalities. Furthermore, it can be used as a catalyst to reduction of nitrophenols (NPhs), specific included 2NP, 3NP and 4NP. The reaction was regarded as a pseudo-first-order kinetic reaction due to the presence of excess NaBH 4 . At 298K, the catalytic rate constants(k) of 2NP, 3NP and 4NP were 0.1754 min −1 , 0.1734 min −1 and 0.2782 min −1 , respectively. The NAC@Au–Ag NCs catalyst still showed good catalytic activity and reusability after five cycles. Therefore, this study developed a H 2 S sensor for food samples and biological systems. And this nanocatalyst had great application potential for removed the nitrophenol pollutants in water.

Management of myocardial ischemia–reperfusion injury (MIRI) in reperfusion therapy remains a major obstacle in the field of cardiovascular disease, but current available therapies have not yet been achieved in mitigating myocardial injury due to the complex pathological mechanisms of MIRI. Exogenous delivery of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) to the injured myocardium can be an effective strategy for treating MIRI due to the multiple physiologic functions of H 2 S, including anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and mitochondrial protective effects. Here, to realize the precise delivery and release of H 2 S, we proposed the targeted H 2 S-mediated gas therapy with pH-sensitive release property mediated by platelet membranes (PMs). In this study, a biomimetic functional poly(lactic-co-ethanolic acid) nanoparticle (RAPA/JK-1-PLGA@PM) was fabricated by loading rapamycin (RAPA; mTOR inhibitor) and JK-1 (H 2 S donor) and then coated with PM. In vitro observations were conducted including pharmaceutical evaluation, H 2 S release behaviors, hemolysis analysis, serum stability, cellular uptake, cytotoxicity, inhibition of myocardial apoptosis, and anti-inflammation. In vivo examinations were performed including targeting ability, restoration of cardiac function, inhibition of pathological remodeling, and anti-inflammation. RAPA/JK-1-PLGA@PM was successfully prepared with good size distribution and stability. Utilizing the natural infarct-homing ability of PM, RAPA/JK-1-PLGA@PM could be effectively targeted to the damaged myocardium. RAPA/JK-1-PLGA@PM continuously released H 2 S triggered by inflammatory microenvironment, which could inhibit cardiomyocyte apoptosis, realize the transition of pro-inflammation, and alleviate myocardial injury demonstrated in hypoxia/reoxygenation myocardial cell in vitro. Precise delivery and release of H 2 S attenuated inflammatory response and cardiac damage, promoted cardiac repair, and ameliorated cardiac function proven in MIRI mouse model in vivo. This research outlined the novel nanoplatform that combined immunosuppressant agents and H 2 S donor with the pH-sensitive release property, offering a promising therapeutic for MIRI treatment that leveraged the synergistic effects of gas therapy.

The catalytic oxidation of H 2 S into element sulfur using nanocarbon materials is an effective means to solve environmental pollution and realize resource utilization of sulfur. Defect engineering and heteroatom doping are effective strategies for tuning the electronic structure of carbon materials to enhance their catalytic performance. Therefore, rationally exploiting the synergistic effects between defects and heteroatom sites, and elucidating the underlying catalytic mechanisms are essential for the development of high-performance carbon-based catalysts. In this study, we design and synthesize a series of N-doped carbon catalysts containing structural defects, which exhibit significantly enhanced desulfurization performance. Experimental results demonstrate that the NDC-700 catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity (95.0% H 2 S conversion and 94.4% S selectivity at 190 °C) and stability (>80 h) while maintaining high performance with high O 2 partial pressures and in the presence of impurity gases such as steam, CO 2 , and CO under mild conditions in continuous mode (≤ 200 °C). XPS analysis, kinetic studies, and oxygen activation experiments reveal that the catalytic performance improves with increasing defect density, despite a decrease in pyridinic N content. DFT calculations further indicate that defect structures substantially alter the local charge distribution around pyridinic N sites, promoting the adsorption and activation of H 2 S and O 2 , ultimately improving catalytic performance. This study elucidates the synergistic interaction between defects and N sites, and further confirms the critical role of defects in enhancing the catalytic function of N-doped carbon materials.
