A dual-mode sensor based on colorimetric and Tyndall effect of gold nanoparticles for ultra-sensitive detection of Hg2+

Li Dandan,Wen Qilin,Zhou Yanyu,Li Dan,Xi Huai,Huang Guidan,Liang Jinhua,Xiao Xiaofen,Zhu Wenyuan

Mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) is the most widespread and highly toxic environmental pollutant, which exerts numerous adverse effects on environmental and human health. There is an urgent need to develop a convenient method for detecting Hg 2+ . Herein, a novel dual-mode sensor based on colorimetric and Tyndall effect of gold nanoparticles was developed for ultra-sensitive determination of Hg 2+ . In this strategy, a polyA-modified Au probe with high uniformity was assembled successfully. Both modes were based on Hg 2+ -induced aggregation of the probes. Hg 2+ was reflected according to the color variations of solution and the Tyndall effect of Au reporter. With the aid of a laser pointer, the Tyndall mode demonstrated about 615-fold improvement on sensitivity compared with the colorimetry way. Taking advantages of low cost and convenient assembly of polyA-based Au probe and the combination of colorimetry and Tyndall effect, our strategy determined the Hg 2+ with high sensitivity and wide range. By changing probes or nanoparticles, the proposed strategy is expected to be a universal platform for detecting other analytes in environmental and even biological samples. Graphical abstract A novel dual-mode sensor based on colorimetric and tyndall effect of gold nanoparticles for ultra-sensitive determination of Hg2+ was exploited.

Highly Sensitive Simultaneous Stripping Voltametric Detection of Zn2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+ by Bismuth Codeposition Procedure with Graphdiyne−Modified Electrode

Yijing Ai,Lisi Wang,Wanting Fu,Xiang Ye,Juan Zhou,Xiaoping Zhang,Shuhai He,Wei Sun

In this paper, graphdiyne (GDY)−modified glassy carbon electrode was prepared and further used for the sensitive and simultaneous detection of three target heavy metal ions of Zn2+, Cd2+and Hg2+by codeposition with Bi3+in the mixture solution. GDY−modified electrodes exhibit a larger electrode area and abundant active sites, which is favorable for absorbing more metal ions. Bismuth has low toxicity and can form alloys with zinc, cadmium and mercury. Therefore, three kinds of heavy metal ions can be pre-concentrated with bismuth on the GDY−modified electrode surface, and the following stripping analysis results in high sensitivity and selectivity. By using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry, the detection ranges of Zn2+, Cd2+and Hg2+were from 2.0 to 100.0 μM with low detection limits of 0.255 μM, 0.367 μM and 0.796 μM, respectively. In addition, the sensor showed excellent repeatability, reproducibility, and stability, which was applied to sensitive analysis of river water samples with satisfactory results. Keywords:graphdiyne;bismuth;heavy metal ions;electrochemistry;differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry

Water-soluble β-cyclodextrin based turn-on amplifying fluorescent probes for sensitive and selective detection of Hg2+/Hg+ ions

Kaiqi Liu,Luminita Marin,Xinjian Cheng

In this work, fluorescent β- cyclodextrin (β-CD) based probes containing naphthalimide group were synthesized to realize the specific recognition of Hg 2+ /Hg + in aqueous system. Firstly, three small fluorescent molecules (N1, N2 and N3) with -NH 2 groups were synthesized from 4-bromo-1, 8-naphthalene anhydride . Secondly, CH CCH 2 - group was introduced into β-CD by Williamson ether formation reaction. Finally, the target probes (β-CD-PI, β-CD-PY and β-CD-TP) were obtained by Amino-Yne click reaction. These probes can efficiently recognize Hg 2+ /Hg + . β-CD-PI emits bright yellow fluorescence after binding with Hg 2+ /Hg + , which is a turn-on fluorescent probe . When the Hg 2+ /Hg + concentration exceeds 26 μM, the fluorescence intensity amplifies sharply (20 folds). The hydrophobic parts of the probes aggregated together to form a micelle-like structure due to complexation with Hg 2+ /Hg + , resulting in special micelle-sensitizing properties. Meanwhile, the HOMO-LUMO energy levels of the probes were calculated by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The probe is expected to be used for the detection of Hg 2+ /Hg + in aqueous solutions without any organic solvents.

Selective removal of aqueous Hg2+ by magnetic composites sulfur-containing on the hyper-branched surface: Characterization, performance and mechanism

Xiangchu Zeng,Guanghua Zhang,Xiuling Li,Junfeng Zhu,Zhe Wu

The adsorbents with recyclable, large adsorption capacity and selective adsorption can effectively remove the pollution and harm of heavy metal ions in water. Therefore, two magnetic composites containing sulfur ( MCP-S4 and MCP-S8 ) on the hyper-branched surface were prepared, furthermore, their structures were characterized and adsorption performance was analyzed by FTIR , XRD , TGA, BET, SEM, TEM, VSM and ICP. The results showed that both MCP-S4 and MCP-S8 had superparamagnetism with saturation susceptibility of 22.10 and 22.26 emu/g, and owned a specific surface area of 11.394 and 11.235 m 2 /g, respectively. MCP-S4 and MCP-S8 could selectively adsorb Hg 2+ with the exist of Fe 3+ , Cu 2+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Mn 2+ , and Al 3+ in solution. The adsorption kinetics accorded with pseudo-second-order model and Boyd film diffusion model , and the adsorption isotherm was fitted better with Langmuir isotherm model and D-R model, furthermore, the adsorption was an entropic-increasing and endothermic process . The removal rate of Hg 2+ from simulated sewage by the two materials was more than 91%, and the adsorption retention rate was more than 85% after five adsorption-desorption cycles. The adsorption mechanism was analyzed by comparing the changes of FTIR, EDS and XPS spectra before and after adsorption. It was found that functional groups (C–N, CONH, C S, SH) could form stable chelates with Hg 2+ , which was the main reason why MCP-S4 and MCP-S8 could adsorb Hg 2+ selectively, furthermore, S atoms of C S and –SH played a leading role in the process of adsorption. In addition, DFT calculation was also used as an auxiliary means to verify the adsorption mechanism.

Rongsheng Gao,Xueyan Liu,Jianyan Feng,Lu Han,Jianhong Xu,Chengyou Kan

A novel polyurethane ( PU- co -HCCA ) nanoemulsion bearing coumarin derivative ( HCCA ) was synthesized as a “turn-on” fluorescent probe and used to modify filter paper, and its sensing properties were investigated. Results showed that PU- co -HCCA nanoemulsion exhibited high selectivity and excellent sensitivity toward Hg 2+ over other metal ions, and possessed excellent fluorescence quantum yields of 0.976, ppb-levels detection limits of 1.61 ppb and large Stokes shifts of 101 nm. Meanwhile, as an application example of as-prepared PU- co -HCCA nanoemulsion, a Hg 2+ test paper was prepared by modifying filter paper with PU- co -HCCA nanoemulsion, and results indicated that the test paper is portable and convenient and has a wide working pH range. We believe that the PU- co -HCCA nanoemulsion and the modified filter paper can provide a new design principle for the application of fluorescence sensors for metal ions including Hg 2+ .

Rapid electrochemical quantification of trace Hg2+ using a hairpin DNA probe and quantum dot modified screen-printed gold electrodes

Wancun Zhang,Pin Zhang,Ying Liang,Weyland Cheng,Lifeng Li,Huanmin Wang,Zhidan Yu,Yan Liu,Xianwei Zhang

Rapid, simple, sensitive and specific approaches for mercury(II) (Hg2+) detection are essential for toxicology assessment, environmental protection, food analysis and human health. In this study, a ratiometric hairpin DNA probe based electrochemical biosensor, which relies on hairpin DNA probes conjugated with water-soluble and carboxyl functionalized quaternary Zn–Ag–In–S quantum dot (QD) on screen-printed gold electrodes (SPGE), referred to as the HP-QDs-SPGE electrochemical biosensor in this study, was developed for Hg2+ detection. Based on the “turn-off” reaction of a hairpin DNA probe binding with a mismatched target and Hg2+ through the formation of T–Hg2+–T coordination, the HP-QDs-SPGE electrochemical biosensor can rapidly quantify trace Hg2+ with high ultrasensitivity, specificity, repeatability and reproducibility. The conformational change of the hairpin DNA probe caused a significant decrease in electrochemical intensity, which could be used for the quantification of Hg2+. The linear dynamic range and high sensitivity of the HP-QDs-SPGE electrochemical biosensor for the detection of Hg2+ was studied in vitro, with a broad linear dynamic range of 10 pM to 1 μM and detection limits of 0.11 pM. In particular, this HP-QDs-SPGE electrochemical biosensor showed excellent selectivity toward Hg2+ ions in the presence of other metal ions. More importantly, this biosensor has been successfully used to detect Hg2+ in deionized water, tap water, groundwater and urine samples with good recovery rate and small relative standard deviations. In summary, the developed HP-QDs-SPGE electrochemical biosensor exhibited promising potential for further applications in on-site analysis.

Sulfur-doped reduced graphene oxide@chitosan composite for the selective and sensitive electrochemical detection of Hg2+ in fish muscle

Qingxia Ran,Fangfang Sheng,Guorui Chang,Min Zhong,Shuxia Xu

In this study, a glassy carbon electrode was modified with sulfur-doped reduced graphene oxide (S-rGO) and then combined with chitosan (CTS) to produce an electrochemical sensor. There is a favorable interaction between Hg 2+ and S-rGO, due to the strong affinity between sulfur and mercury. This effect was exploited for the selective and sensitive electrochemical determination of trace amounts of Hg 2+ in fish muscle samples by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The factors that can affect the sensitivity and precision of the modified electrode were investigated through the optimization of various parameters, such as S-rGO concentration, solution pH, deposition potential, accumulation potential, accumulation time, and supporting electrolytes. By introducing S-rGO to enrich and amplify the electrochemical signal, the sensing strategy allowed to detect a range from 0.125 to 6 μM Hg 2+ with a detection limit of 1.6 nM. The sensor also showed excellent selectivity towards Hg 2+ in the presence of interfering metal ions, such as Fe 3+ , Zn 2+ , Mg 2+ , Mn 2+ , As 3+ , Na + , Cd 2+ and CO 2+ . The practical feasibility of the proposed sensor was assessed in fish muscle samples with satisfactory results compared with that of atomic fluorescence spectrometry. Moreover, this work demonstrated a simple and reliable method for improving the electrochemical performance of Hg 2+ sensor, which paves the way for many promising potential applications in the field of environmental testing.

Ultrasensitive electrochemical sensor for mercury ion detection based on molybdenum selenide and Au nanoparticles via thymine–Hg2+–thymine coordination

Ting Zhou,Meijuan Li,Na Li,Yulin Dong,Dan Liu,Xiaosong Hu,Zhizhong Xie,Deyu Qu,Xi Li,Chaocan Zhang

An ultrasensitive and specific-selection electrochemical sensor was constructed for Hg2+ detection based on Au nanoparticles and molybdenum selenide (Au NPs@MoSe2) as well as the thymine–Hg2+–thymine (T–Hg2+–T) coordination. Herein, Au NPs@MoSe2 not only could improve the sensitivity due to the large surface area and good electrical conductivity but also offered more sites to immobilize thiol-labeled T-rich hairpin DNA probes (P-1), which has a specific recognition for Hg2+ and methylene blue-labeled T-rich DNA probes (MB-P). When Hg2+ and MB-P exist, P-1 and MB-P can form a stable T–Hg2+–T complex. Then, methylene blue can be close to the electrode and detectable via differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Benefiting from the specific recognition of T–Hg2+–T and the merits of Au NPs and MoSe2, the fabricated biosensor presented an ultrasensitive and highly selective performance. The DPV responses had a positive linear relationship with Hg2+ concentrations over ten orders of magnitude from 1.0 × 10−16 to 1.0 × 10−7 mol L−1. The detection limit was down to 1.1 × 10−17 mol L−1. Moreover, the developed sensor exhibited a promising application for trace Hg2+determination in water samples.

Jinquan Liu,Jiao Shi,Miao Zhong,Yating Wang,Xinxin Zhang,Wenyu Wang,Zhijun Chen,Yan Tan,Dongyun Xu,Shengyuan Yang,Le Li

Mercury is a highly toxic element that is widely present in all types of environmental media and can accumulate in living organisms. Prolonged exposure to high levels of mercury can lead to brain damage and death, so the detection of mercury is of great importance. In this study, a cost-effective and easy-to-operate electrochemical sensing method was successfully developed based on an amino-functionalized titanium-based MXene (NH2–Ti3C2Tx) for the rapid and selective detection of Hg2+ that could have a coordination effect with the –NH2 group of NH2–Ti3C2Tx to promote the efficient accumulation of Hg2+. In this strategy, the NH2–Ti3C2Tx was first modified on glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) to fabricate the electrochemical sensor. Benefiting from the excellent electrical conductivity, abundant active sites, and strong adsorption capacity performance of the NH2–Ti3C2Tx, the NH2–Ti3C2Tx modified GCE (NH2–Ti3C2Tx/GCE) exhibited satisfactory selectivity and enhanced square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) measurement for the rapid detection of trace amounts of Hg2+ in aqueous solutions. The electrochemical sensor was found to be capable of detecting Hg2+ with a low detection limit of 8.27 nmol L−1 and a linear range of 0.5 μmol L−1 to 50 μmol L−1. The response time of the electrochemical sensing method was 308 s. In addition, the electrochemical sensing method has good selectivity, repeatability and stability, and multiple heavy metal ions have no effect on its detection, with repeatability and stability RSDs of 1.68% and 1.43%, respectively. Furthermore, the analysis of practical water samples demonstrated that the developed method was highly practical for the actual determination of Hg2+ with recoveries in the range of 99.22–101.90%.

Yan Du,Xiaohan Li,Limei Cao,Ji Yang

Although mercury is one of the heavy metal pollutants that endanger human health and the environment, it is also an essential raw material needed for industrial development. We try to use electrochemical reduction method to realize the resource utilization of mercury. MoS 2 @Ti electrodes were prepared using a one-step solvothermal method, and XRD, XPS, SEM and EDS were used to analyze the MoS 2 powder. The prepared highly reactive MoS 2 @Ti electrode was used as a cathode to electrochemically reduce the mercury-containing solution. After a series of single-factor experiments, under the conditions of stirring rate of 400 r/min, electrode spacing of 20 mm, constant potential of 2 V and electrolytic time of 2 h, the removal efficiency of Hg 2+ in 10 ∼ 50 mg/L HgSO 4 -10 % H 2 SO 4 solution reached 94.5 % or above. The reaction mechanism of MoS 2 @Ti was investigated mainly by using the indirect reaction of superoxide radicals and hydrogen radicals to achieve the reduction of Hg 2+ . And the MoS 2 @Ti electrode can still reach 80.0 % removal efficiency after five times of repeated use. A neural network model was used to predict the efficiency of Hg 2+ reduction in this system with a high accuracy of RMSE 1.3049 and R 2 0.9511. The above study contributes to the realization of the resource utilization of mercury.

Development of a Novel H-Shaped Electrochemical Aptasensor for Detection of Hg2+ Based on Graphene Aerogels–Au Nanoparticles Composite

Gang Peng,Mengxue Guo,Yuting Liu,Han Yang,Zuorui Wen,Xiaojun Chen

Hg2+, a highly toxic heavy metal, poses significant environmental and health risks, necessitating rapid detection methods. In this study, we employed an electrochemical aptasensor for rapid and sensitive detection of Hg2+based on DNA strands (H2 and H3) immobilized graphene aerogels-Au nanoparticles (GAs-AuNPs) hybrid recognition interface and exonuclease III (Exo III)-mediated cyclic amplification. Firstly, Gas-AuNPs were modified on the surface of the ITO electrode to form a sensing interface to increase DNA loading and accelerate electron transfer. Then, DNA helper was generated with the addition of Hg2+via Exo III-mediated cycling. Finally, the hairpin structures of H2 and H3 were opened with the DNA helper, and then the methylene blue (MB) functionalized DNA (A1 and A2) combined with the H2 and H3 to form an H-shaped structure. The current response of MB as an electrochemical probe was proportional to the concentration of Hg2+. Under optimal conditions, the aptasensor showed excellent performance for Hg2+, achieving a linear range from 1 fM to 10 nM and a detection limit of 0.16 fM. Furthermore, the aptasensor was used to detect Hg2+in spiked milk samples, achieving a high recovery rate and demonstrating promising application prospects. Keywords:graphene aerogels–Au nanoparticles;Hg2+;H-shaped;aptasensor;milk sample

Xunlong Zhang,Quangan Cai,Ke Liu,Guilong Yan,Jingyu Chen,Yuanpeng Wu,Zhenyu Li,Li Wang,Han Li

Heavy metal pollutants seriously threaten people’s health. A sensitive, selective, and responsive method for the detection of heavy metal ions is necessary. Herein, flexible robust europium complex/cellulose acetate nanofiber (Eu/CA NF) luminescent membranes were prepared by the electrospinning method. The tensile length of this nanofiber membrane, which can be used in a variety of force scenarios, can be increased by 130% of its original length. These Eu/CA NFs showed unique specificity and good sensitivity in detecting Hg 2+ with its low limit of detection (LOD) of 3.09 μM and a specific recognition of Hg 2+ with a quenching rate of 97.32%. In addition, Eu/CA NF nanofibers were recyclable even after 50 times washing treatment. This study provides a convenient and effective super-sensitive detection thought for a trace amount of Hg 2+ in various water environments.
