Broadband emission with a large Stokes shift is important to obtain an excellent color rendering index of the solid-state lighting device. Among low-dimensional material and perovskite-like phosphors with broadband self-trapped emission, Sn-based phosphors have attracted much attention due to their high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). However, the disadvantage is that the synthesis of Sn-based phosphors needs to be performed in a glovebox. Upon photoexcitation, the broadband emission of self-trapped excitons results from exciton–phonon coupling induced by the transient distortion of the lattice. Low-dimensional material structures often promote self-trapped emission because of more vibrational degrees of freedom and easier polarization under photoexcitation. Here, zero-dimensional (0D) SnX2 (X = Br, I) single crystals are synthesized by the solvent evaporation method in the air. SnX2 emits blue light, broadband yellow light, and deep red light, among which SnBr2 has the best luminescence performance. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of SnBr2 reaches 85% and the Stokes shift reaches 265 nm. The PL intensity of SnX2 is linearly related to excitation power, which preliminarily indicates that the origin of SnX2 luminescence is attributed to self-trapped emission (STE). The white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) were fabricated using yellow-emitting SnBr2 and blue-emitting BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+, which has a low correlated color temperature (3160 K) and a relatively common color rendering index (79).

As a new structural motif, an interesting 3D energetic metal – framework of silver ions and 3,4-diaminofurazan, [Ag+(daf)NO3−]n, is successfully synthesized and the structure is determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The effects of hydrogen bond, coordination bond, adsorption and filling interactions make this compound have a high density (2.694 g·cm−3 at 293 K). The calculated detonation velocity and the sensitivities are all comparable with trinitrotoluene (TNT). The onset decomposition temperature is equal to hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), state-of-the-art explosive. This framework provides a potential superiority of E-MOFs for energetic materials.

Recycling strongly acidic wastewater as diluted H 2 SO 4 after contaminants contained being removed was previously proposed, however, Cl(-I), a kind of contaminant contained in strongly acidic wastewater, is difficult to remove, which severely degrades the quality of recycled H 2 SO 4 . In this study, the removal of Cl(-I) using PbO 2 was investigated and the involved mechanisms were explored. The removal efficiency of Cl(-I) reached 93.38% at 50℃ when PbO 2 /Cl(-I) mole ratio reached 2:1. The identification of reaction products shows that Cl(-I) was oxidized to Cl 2 , and PbO 2 was reduced to PbSO 4 . Cl 2 was absorbed by NaOH to form NaClO, which was used for the regeneration of PbO 2 from the generated PbSO 4 . Cl(-I) was removed through two pathways, i.e., surface oxidation and •OH radical oxidation. •OH generated by the reaction of PbO 2 and OH − plays an important role in Cl(-I) removal. The regenerated PbO 2 had excellent performance to remove Cl(-I) after six-time regeneration. This study provided an in-depth understanding on the effective removal of Cl(-I) by the oxidation method.

The measurement of cardiac troponin-I (cTnI) is widely used for diagnosing acute myocardial infarction (AMI) diseases because of its myocardial specificity. Packaged microbubble resonators with thin wall are utilized for label-free and specific detection of cTnI based on whispering gallery mode (WGM). This packaged structure can provide a good protection for the biosensor, improve the anti-interference ability of the sensor and reduce the system noise. The theoretical detection limit of the biosensors for cTnI in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) is 0.4 ag mL −1 (0.02 a M ). Furthermore, we demonstrated that the biosensors can be used to detect cTnI molecules in simulated serum and the theoretical detection limit is also 0.4 ag mL −1 (0.02 a M ). These results are much far below the clinical cut-off value and show a huge application potential for the detection of cardiac biomarkers of AMI.

Engineered metabolic pathways in microbial cell factories often have no natural organization and have challenging flux imbalances, leading to low biocatalytic efficiency. Modular polyketide synthases (PKSs) are multienzyme complexes that synthesize polyketide products via an assembly line thiotemplate mechanism. Here, we develop a strategy named mimic PKS enzyme assembly line (mPKSeal) that assembles key cascade enzymes to enhance biocatalytic efficiency and increase target production by recruiting cascade enzymes tagged with docking domains from type I cis -AT PKS. We apply this strategy to the astaxanthin biosynthetic pathway in engineered Escherichia coli for multienzyme assembly to increase astaxanthin production by 2.4-fold. The docking pairs, from the same PKSs or those from different cis -AT PKSs evidently belonging to distinct classes, are effective enzyme assembly tools for increasing astaxanthin production. This study addresses the challenge of cascade catalytic efficiency and highlights the potential for engineering enzyme assembly.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising and emerging method for the treatment of cancer. Usually, Type II PDT is used in the clinic, and mainly involves three key elements: a photosensitizer, molecular oxygen and laser light. However, it is known that tumor tissue is deficient in oxygen molecules which is why Type I PDT is mostly preferred in the therapy of tumors in which the hypoxic tissue plays a major role. Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) have shown great potential in cancer theranostics, acting as bioimaging agents and photosensitizers. Herein, we have synthesized novel kinds of fluorine and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (F,NCDs) that emit bright green fluorescence under ultra-violet light. The F,NCDs have excellent water solubility and low cytotoxicity. They can generate hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) and superoxide anions (˙O2−) under LED light (400–500 nm, 15 mW cm−2) irradiation, making them ideal photosensitizers for Type I PDT. Furthermore, upon using the HepG2 cell line as an in vitro model, the F,NCDs exhibit a better cell imaging effect and higher PDT efficiency than the control sample of CDs without F and N doping. This work has illustrated that the F,NCDs are promising in achieving the image-guided PDT of cancers, usually in a hypoxia tumor microenvironment.

The crystalline structure of silk fibroin Silk I is generally considered to be a metastable structure; however, there is no definite conclusion under what circumstances this crystalline structure is stable or the crystal form will change. In this study, silk fibroin solution was prepared from B. Mori silkworm cocoons, and a combined method of freeze-crystallization and freeze-drying at different temperatures was used to obtain stable Silk I crystalline material and uncrystallized silk material, respectively. Different concentrations of methanol and ethanol were used to soak the two materials with different time periods to investigate the effect of immersion treatments on the crystalline structure of silk fibroin materials. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman scattering spectroscopy (Raman), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to characterize the structure of silk fibroin before and after the treatments. The results showed that, after immersion treatments, uncrystallized silk fibroin material with random coil structure was transformed into Silk II crystal structure, while the silk material with dominated Silk I crystal structure showed good long-term stability without obvious transition to Silk II crystal structure. α-chymotrypsin biodegradation study showed that the crystalline structure of silk fibroin Silk I materials is enzymatically degradable with a much lower rate compared to uncrystallized silk materials. The crystalline structure of Silk I materials demonstrate a good long-term stability, endurance to alcohol sterilization without structural changes, and can be applied to many emerging fields, such as biomedical materials, sustainable materials, and biosensors. Keywords:silk fibroin;porous material;crystalline structure;stability

Unraveling the interaction mechanisms of type I collagen with various inorganic nanoparticles is of pivotal importance to construct collagen-based bionanocomposites with hierarchical structures for biomedical, pharmaceutical, and other industrial applications. In this study, synthetic two-dimensional Laponite nanoplatelets (LAP NPs) are surface-functionalized with tetrakis(hydroxymethyl) phosphonium sulfate (THPS) for reinforcing their incorporation with type I collagen matrix by focusing on the influences of the interactions on the hierarchical structures of the collagen. Our results indicate that the LAP NPs can be successfully surface-functionalized with THPS via covalent bonds between the amine-functionalized NPs and the hydroxymethyl groups of THPS. Moreover, the resulting NPs can be well dispersed into the collagen matrix and evenly bound onto the collagen fiber strands and between the collagen fibrils, preserving the native D-periodic banding patterns of the collagen fibrils. The formation of covalent and hydrogen bonds between the collagen and the functionalized NPs can stabilize the intrinsic triple-helical conformation of the collagen, conferring the resulting collagen-based nanocomposites with improved thermal stability and enhanced mechanical properties. We anticipate that a fundamental understanding of the interactions between the collagen and functionalized inorganic nanoparticles would contribute to the design, fabrication, and further application of hierarchical collagen-based bionanocomposites with multifunctions.

Background Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory disease that markedly elevates the risk of colon cancers and results in disability. The disrupted immune homeostasis has been recognized as a predominant player in the pathogenesis of UC. However, the overall remission rate of current therapies based on immunoregulation is still unsatisfactory. Si-Ni-San (SNS) has been found effective in relieving UC through thousands of years of clinical practice, yet the specific mechanisms of the protective effect of SNS were not fully elucidated. Purpose We aim to investigate the therapeutic effects of SNS against the development of chronic colitis and the underlying mechanisms. Methods We established a DSS-induced chronic experimental colitis mouse model to evaluate the effect of SNS. RNA-sequencing, bioinformatic analysis, and in vitro studies were performed to investigate the underlying mechanisms. Results Our data demonstrated that SNS significantly ameliorated chronic experimental colitis via inhibiting the expression of genes associated with inflammatory responses. Interestingly, SNS significantly suppressed DSS-induced type I interferon (IFN) responses instead of directly downregulating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as Il-6. In vitro study further found that SNS selectively inhibited STING and RIG-I pathway-induced type I IFN responses by modulating TBK1- and IRF3-dependent signaling transduction. SNS also suppressed the expression of IFN-stimulated genes by directly inhibiting STAT1 and STAT2 activation. Conclusion Our study not only provides novel insights into the pathogenic role of type I IFN responses in colitis but also suggested that SNS or bioactive compounds derived from SNS may serve as novel therapeutic strategies for the treatment of UC via interfering type I IFN-mediated inflammation.

The all-inorganic halide perovskite CsPbBr3 exhibited extraordinary photoelectric properties as well as great potential for various optic-electronic devices. The introduction of a Cl/I dopant is an effective method to optimize their properties. However, it is still a challenge to grow doped CsPbBr3 single crystals from solution. In this work, we report on the crystal growth of Cl/I-doped CsPbBr3 crystals using the modified inverse temperature crystallization (ITC) method. The components of raw materials and solvent in precursors were precisely tailored. The resulting doping ratio between the actual content and the nominal content are 0.99 and 0.046 for Cl and I, respectively. It indicates that I ion doped crystals exhibit more severe stoichiometric deviation due to the lower decomposition energy. The crystal structure, morphology, and optical properties of doped crystals were also investigated systematically. The {101} and {010} facets of as-grown crystals were influenced by the doping process. PL and UV transmittance spectra exhibited changes in the band gap in Cl/I-doped crystals. Finally, the phase diagram of basic photoelectric properties was determined for CsPb(Br1–nCln)3 crystals and it reveals conductive type changes from the P type to N type with an increase in the doping content of the Cl element. The optimum component of CsPb(Br0.93Cl0.07)3 demonstrates the highest resistivity of 4.3 × 109 Ω cm, an on/off ratio of ∼40, and a mobility of 414 cm2 V–1 s–1 as well as the lowest carrier concentration of 3.57 × 107 cm–3. Our work provides a strategy to grow doped halide perovskite crystals and tailor their optical and electrical properties.

As a family of semiconductor photocatalysts, Sillén-type bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX, X = Cl, Br, I) have attracted widespread interest due to their excellent photocatalytic activity and photoconductivity. However, most current strategies on synthesizing ultrathin 2D BiOX nanosheets (NSs) rely on high temperature and pressure and complex procedures, which seriously confine their large-scale applications. Herein, we develop a simple and facile two-phase method for the synthesis of ultrathin 2D BiOX NSs with highly exposed {001} facets. On the basis of systematically studying the effects of various reaction parameters on the size, thickness, morphology, and composition of the products, the growth mechanism of ultrathin 2D BiOX NSs is presented, which indicates that the suppression of Bi3+ hydrolysis is required for the growth of 2D BiOX NSs with highly exposed {001} facets. The acidic condition prefers the growth of BiOX NSs with ultrathin structure and high crystallinity along the [001] zone axis. By using BiOBr NSs as the example, the photocatalytic activities of ultrathin 2D BiOX NSs are evaluated upon photodegradation of organic compounds and photocatalytic water oxidation. The results show that the organic compound photodegradation is mainly determined by the specific surface area of BiOBr NSs, while the O2 evolution rate of BiOBr NSs for water oxidation is dependent on their photogenerated charge separation efficiency. Because of the larger specific surface area and higher photogenerated charge separation efficiency, BiOBr-acid-0.5 ultrathin 2D NSs exhibits the fastest organic compound photodegradation rate and O2 evolution rate of 445.6 μmol g–1 h–1.
