Engineering the Self-Assembly Induced Emission of Cu Nanoclusters by Au(I) Doping

Jiale Liu,Zhennan Wu,Ye Tian,Yanchun Li,Lin Ai,Tingting Li,Haoyang Zou,Yi Liu,Xindong Zhang,Hao Zhang,Bai Yang

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and self-assembly induced emission (SAIE) effects have been employed to tune the emission properties of metal nanoclusters (NCs). However, it is still not possible to further enhance the photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and control the emission colors of the NCs using AIE and SAIE. On the basis of our recent work studying the contribution of Cu(I) defects in the SAIE of Cu NCs, in this article, Au(I) was doped into Cu NC self-assembled nanosheets (NSASs) to construct a more stable Au(I)-centered state. As a result, the PLQYs, emission stability, and tunability of emission colors of the Cu NSASs were significantly improved. Detailed studies reveal that the doped Au(I) induces a Au(I)–Cu(I) metallophilic interaction, which leads to a ligand-to-Cu–Au charge transfer, which facilitates the relaxation of excited electrons via a radiative pathway, thereby enhancing the emission intensity. The charge transfer from Cu to Au lowers the energy, thus leading to the red-shift of PL emission. Au(I) is likely doped into the Cu NSASs rather than in individual NCs, because 0.3% Au doping is enough to alter the emission properties. By mixing Au(I)-doped Cu NSASs with different emission colors (due to different Au doping percentages) as color conversion materials on commercially available 365 nm GaN chips, a white light-emitting diode prototype is fabricated.

Core–Shell AgCl@SiO2 Nanoparticles: Ag(I)-Based Antibacterial Materials with Enhanced Stability

Peng Tan,Yan-Hua Li,Xiao-Qin Liu,Yao Jiang,Lin-Bing Sun

Silver (Ag)-based nanoparticles are one type of highly effective antimicrobial widely used in medical devices, consumer products, and wound dressing. Although Ag(I) rather than Ag(0) is the active species in antibacterial processes, the use of Ag(I) as antibacterial materials is hindered by its instability toward light irradiation. In this paper, we report the fabrication of core–shell AgCl@SiO2 nanoparticles, which comprise a core of AgCl nanoparticles and a shell of porous silica, for antibacterial applications for the first time. The porous silica shells not only enhance the stability of AgCl by preventing the core from direct light irradiation but also allow active Ag(I) to pass through continuously to inhibit the growth of bacteria. It is worth noting that the synthesis is achieved by a facile one-pot method in which the surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride used for the formation of AgCl nanoparticles also acts as a structure-directing agent in the subsequent creation of porous silica. Our results show that the obtained AgCl@SiO2 nanoparticles exhibit well-defined core–shell structure and are highly efficient in the growth inhibition of Escherichia coli. More importantly, the stability of Ag(I) toward light irradiation is greatly enhanced by the protection of the silica shell. The convenient fabrication, well-defined core–shell structure, and enhanced stability make AgCl@SiO2 nanoparticles highly promising for antibacterial applications.

Low-dimensional hybrid copper(I) halides single crystals: synthesis, structures, and tunable photoluminescence

Pengyu Zhang,Zhengguang Yan,Chen Li,Yiping Du,Lin Ma,Zhenzhong Wang,Taifeng Lin,Le Zhao,Jiawen Xiao

Low-dimensional organic–inorganic hybrid copper(I) compounds have attracted much attention due to their high luminescence efficiency and non-toxicity. In this study, we synthesized three novel centimeter-scale Cu(I)-based hybrid [1,2-PDA]CuX 3 (X=Cl, Br, I) single crystals using the solvent evaporation method. [1,2-PDA]CuCl 3 and [1,2-PDA]CuBr 3 exhibit zero-dimensional crystal structures composed of separated binary edge-sharing [CuX 4 ] 3- (X=Cl, Br) tetrahedra, while [1,2-PDA]CuI 3 exhibits a one-dimensional crystal structure composed of chains of corner-sharing [CuI 4 ] 3- tetrahedra. The photoluminescence emission of [1,2-PDA]CuX 3 (X=I, Cl, Br) ranges from cyan to purple light at room temperature, showing a tunable pattern with the halogen changes. The photoluminescence quantum yield of the [1,2-PDA]CuI 3 single crystal was measured to be 33.5 %. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that all three single crystals have direct bandgaps. The emission mechanisms of [1,2-PDA]CuI 3 single crystals were investigated by temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy, and the broadband emissions were found to be typical of self-trapped exciton emission. It is worth mentioning that the discovery of low toxic, stable, and inexpensive copper(I) compounds paves the way for considering low-cost and environmentally friendly copper halides for practical applications.

Incorporating Copper(I) Clusters into Lead Halide Perovskite through Mediation of Zwitterionic Linkers

Liang Zhao,Guoying Yao,Huai Chen,Tao Zeng,Zhenyu Yang

Hybrid metal halide perovskites have attracted significant attention due to their outstanding chemical and structural versatility. Incorporating additional building blocks, such as large organic groups and organometallic clusters, provides additional pathways to manipulate the optoelectronic properties of perovskites. However, the bulky building blocks often struggle to cocrystallize with the lead halide framework, leading to undesirable crystal phase segregation or component exchange during cocrystallization. Here, we introduce a new zwitterionic-ligand-driven method for incorporating Cu-based clusters into perovskites. Mercaptoethylamine (MEA) serves as the bifunctional ligand to bridge the Cu(I) tetrahedral moieties and the perovskite scaffold, yielding a new bimetallic structure (MEA)4Cu2Pb3Br12. Combined X-ray-based characterizations and charge analysis affirm the antiferromagnetic coupling between the [CuS2Br2] tetrahedra, where the spin density is localized on the S atoms in a diradical form. The inclusion of Cu-based clusters introduces new acceptor energy levels that facilitate photocarrier separation and enable near-infrared light absorption.

Metabolic characteristics of Tanshinone I in human liver microsomes and S9 subcellular fractions

Yue Li,Yujuan Fan,Huizong Su,Qian Wang,Guo-Fu Li,Yiyang Hu,Jian Jiang,Bo Tan,Furong Qiu

Tanshinone I (TSI) is a lipophilic diterpene in Salvia miltiorrhiza with versatile pharmacological activities. However, metabolic pathway of TSI in human is unknown. In this study, we determined major metabolites of TSI using a preparation of human liver microsomes (HLMs) by HPLC-UV and Q-Trap mass spectrometer. A total of 6 metabolites were detected, which indicated the presence of hydroxylation, reduction as well as glucuronidation.Selective chemical inhibition and purified cytochrome P450 (CYP450) isoform screening experiments revealed that CYP2A6 was primarily responsible for TSI Phase I metabolism. Part of generated hydroxylated TSI was glucuronidated via several glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) isoforms including UGT1A1, UGT1A3, UGT1A7, UGT1A9, as well as extrahepatic expressed isoforms UGT1A8 and UGT1A10. TSI could be reduced to a relatively unstable hydroquinone intermediate by NAD(P)H: quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), and then immediately conjugated with glucuronic acid by a panel of UGTs, especially UGT1A9, UGT1A1 and UGT1A8. Additionally, NQO1 could also reduce hydroxylated TSI to a hydroquinone intermediate, which was immediately glucuronidated by UGT1A1.The study demonstrated that hydroxylation, reduction as well as glucuronidation were the major pathways for TSI biotransformation, and six metabolites generated by CYPs, NQO1 and UGTs were found in HLMs and S9 subcellular fractions.

A 3D-Printed PLCL Scaffold Coated with Collagen Type I and Its Biocompatibility

Yong He,Wei Liu,Lianxiong Guan,Jielin Chen,Li Duan,Zhaofeng Jia,Jianghong Huang,Wencui Li,Jianquan Liu,Jianyi Xiong,Lijun Liu,Daping Wang

Scaffolds play an important role in tissue engineering and their structure and biocompatibility have great influence on cell behaviors. In this study, poly(l-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PLCL) scaffolds were printed by a 3D printing technology, low-temperature deposition manufacturing (LDM), and then PLCL scaffolds were treated by alkali and coated with collagen type I (COLI). The scaffolds were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), porosity test, mechanical test, and infrared spectroscopy. The prepared PLCL and PLCL-COLI scaffolds had three-dimensional (3D) porous structure and they not only have macropores but also have micropores in the deposited lines. Although the mechanical property of PLCL-COLI was slightly lower than that of PLCL scaffold, the hydrophilicity of PLCL-COLI was significantly enhanced. Rabbit articular chondrocytes were extracted and were identified as chondrocytes by toluidine blue staining. To study the biocompatibility, the chondrocytes were seeded on scaffolds for 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 days. MTT assay showed that the proliferation of chondrocytes on PLCL-COLI scaffold was better than that on PLCL scaffold. And the morphology of cells on PLCL-COLI after 1-day culture was much better than that on PLCL. This 3D-printed PLCL scaffold coated with COLI shows a great potential application in tissue engineering.

Efficient Biotransformation of Icariin to Baohuoside I Using Two Novel GH1 β-Glucosidases

Xiaoling Zhang,Yitong Wang,Tiantian Zhang,Ziqiao Yuan,Yongjun Wei

Epimedium Folium(EF) is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, and its primary bioactive ingredients, such as icariin, are flavonoid glycosides. A rare EF flavonoid, baohuoside I, exhibits superior bioactivities and enhanced bioavailability compared to its metabolic precursor icariin. The biotransformation of icariin to baohuoside I can be effectively and specifically achieved by β-glucosidases. In this study, 33 candidate full-length β-glucosidase genes were screened from a previously built carbohydrate active enzyme (CAZyme) gene dataset derived from cow fecal microbiota. Thirteen of them exhibited β-glucosidase activity, with DCF-bgl-26 and DCF-bgl-27 showing relatively high expression levels and β-glucosidase activity. The maximum β-glucosidase activity of DCF-bgl-26 and DCF-bgl-27 was achieved at 45 °C and pH 6.0, with DCF-bgl-26 demonstrating better thermostability and pH tolerance compared to DCF-bgl-27. The activities of DCF-bgl-26 and DCF-bgl-27 were 123.2 U/mg protein and 157.9 U/mg protein, respectively, both of which are higher than those of many bacterial β-glucosidases. Structure analysis suggested that both β-glucosidases possess canonical (β/α)8-TIM barrel fold structure of GH1 family β-glucosidases. Thin-layer chromatography results showed that both enzymes could efficiently convert icariin to baohuoside I in 30 min, indicating they have potential application in the production of high value rare baohuoside I.

Analytical Interference in Chemiluminescence Assay–Measured Angiotensin I, Angiotensin II, Aldosterone, and Renin

Xiaohua Xu,Yongzhi Xu,Shengqiang Liang

Background The interference can be a significant source of laboratory errors with the potential to cause immunoassay results to drift. Therefore, we evaluated the interference in various endogenous and exogenous substances on immunoassay for angiotensin I (Ang I), angiotensin II (Ang II), aldosterone, and renin in vitro. Methods Ten endogenous and eight exogenous substances were evaluated at supraphysiologic or supratherapeutic plasma levels using the screening study to identify potential interfering substances. Subsequently, potential interfering substances were further tested within maximum pathological or therapeutic plasma concentration ranges using the dose–response study to determine whether the interference has a significant bias. According to preset acceptance criteria, the interference in potential interfering substances for Ang I, Ang II, and renin and aldosterone assays was determined. Results Six potential interfering substances for Ang I immunoassays were identified, namely valsartan, nifedipine, spironolactone, cholesterol, hemoglobin, and triglyceride. Meanwhile, ethanol, nifedipine, spironolactone, heparin sodium, warfarin, hemoglobin, uric acid, cholesterol, and triglyceride appeared to have potential interference in the Ang II assay. Three identified as possible interferents for aldosterone immunoassays were glucose, valsartan, and spironolactone. Moreover, warfarin, valsartan, spironolactone, uric acid, cholesterol, bilirubin unconjugated, triglyceride, and hemoglobin were potential interfering substances for renin immunoassays. However, only spironolactone of these potential interfering substances exceeded preset mean bias limits (less than ±10.0%) in aldosterone immunoassays. Conclusion Exogenous spironolactone caused clinically significant interference in aldosterone immunoassays. Moreover, the interference in other substances was acceptable in Ang I, Ang II, and renin and aldosterone immunoassays.

Exonuclease I assisted fluorometric aptasensor for adenosine detection using 2-AP modified DNA

Haiyan Liu,Yunfeng Bai,Jun Qin,Haiyan Wang,Yuzhen Wang,Zezhong Chen,Feng Feng

A novel sensitive fluorescence method was developed for adenosine detection by using adenosine aptamer, Exo I and a 2-aminopurine-modified DNA (2-AP probe). 2-AP probe was completely complementary to adenosine aptamer. This strategy took advantage of the high binding affinity of adenosine aptamer and the susceptibility of 2-aminopurine (2-AP) to the local base stacking environment. In the absence of the adenosine, the formation of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) through the hybridization of the aptamer with the 2-AP probe prevented the digestion of 2-AP probe by Exo I. The fluorescence of 2-AP was significantly quenched due to the base-stacking interaction. In the presence of adenosine, the binding of adenosine with the aptamer prevented the hybridization between aptamer and 2-AP probe, leading to the digestion of 2-AP probe by Exo I and the release of 2-AP. The fluorescence was recovered. A limit of detection of 0.30   μM and a linear range from 10   μM to 600   μM ( R 2   =   0.9933) were achieved by this assay. Moreover, adenosine analogs did not produce any significant change in the fluorescence intensity response, indicating good selectivity of this sensor for adenosine detection. Finally, it was used for the diluted serum sample.

The enrichment of 7Li by extraction with a Sudan I-Ionic liquid system

Huangda Li,Jinhe Sun,Yongzhong Jia,Pengrui Zhang,Huiqun Ju,Lianjing Mao,Zhiyu Zhao,Xiao Li,Bo Li,Yan Jing,Fei Shao

Lithium isotopes with high abundances (6Li and 7Li) are crucial for the advancement of nuclear energy. In order to achieve the effective separation of 7Li, a Sudan I-[HMIm][BF4]-anisole extraction system was built employing Sudan I (1-benzeneazo-2-naphthol) as the extractant and hydrophobic ionic liquid [HMIm][BF4] as the co-extractant. By optimizing the organic and aqueous phase components, the extraction rate of the system could reach up to 26.30%, and the single-stage separation factor of the system could reach 1.015 ± 0.001. Meanwhile, the mechanism of the extraction process was investigated, and it was found that the ratio of Sudan I to lithium ions is 1 : 1, and the thermodynamic enthalpy change of the extraction process was less than zero (ΔH < 0), indicating that the extraction process of the system was an exothermic process. The construction of the Sudan-ionic liquid extraction separation system provides a new idea for the study of 7Li enrichment and separation and also provides a possibility for the industrialization of high-abundance 7Li enrichment.

Roles of copper(I) in water-promoted CO2 electrolysis to multi-carbon compounds

He Xiaoyang,Lin Li,Li Xiangying,Zhu Minzhi,Zhang Qinghong,Xie Shunji,Mei Bingbao,Sun Fanfei,Jiang Zheng,Cheng Jun,Wang Ye

The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) is promising for practical applications of the electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to multi-carbon (C 2+ ) compounds. Water management is crucial in the MEA electrolyser without catholyte, but few studies have clarified whether the co-feeding water in cathode can enhance C 2+ formation. Here, we report our discovery of pivotal roles of a suitable nanocomposite electrocatalyst with abundant Cu 2 O−Cu 0 interfaces in accomplishing water-promoting effect on C 2+ formation, achieving a current density of 1.0 A cm −2 and a 19% single-pass C 2+ yield at 80% C 2+ Faradaic efficiency in MEA. The operando characterizations confirm the co-existence of Cu + with Cu 0 during CO 2 RR at ampere-level current densities. Our studies reveal that Cu + works for water activation and aids C‒C coupling by enhancing formations of adsorbed CO and CHO species. This work offers a strategy to boost CO 2 RR to C 2+ compounds in industrial-relevant MEA by combining water management and electrocatalyst design.
