Constructing S-Scheme Charge Migration in a Self-Assembled In2O3/WO3 Heterojunction for Photothermal-Driven Dual-Gas Detection

Jianyu Ling,Tao Zhang,Dongchang Li,Hongpeng Zhang,Yu Tong,Linhu Jin,Xiaoyu Ji,Kewei Zhang,Mingzhe Zhang

Increased safe and environmental awareness in production processes necessitates an ever-growing demand for efficient detection of ethanol/n-butanol/diesel fuel blends (clean energy) in rapid, real time. However, the forces between multiplexed organic molecules in complex environments induce a decrease in the flash point, thus requiring sensors with high selectivity and low-temperature detection capabilities. In this study, an In2O3/WO3 multilevel heterojunction is assembled by utilizing the electrostatic interaction between the hydroxyl group of In(OH)3 and WS2. The material achieves dual detection of ethanol and n-butanol under the excitation of light and temperature fields. It also possesses fast response/recovery times, excellent selectivity, and good long-term stability. The WO3 has a defect-rich (002) exposed surface in the In2O3/WO3 heterojunction, and the special electronic structure of the heterojunction induces carrier migration at the S-scheme heterointerface under photothermal activation, which promotes the generation of more reactive oxygen species (O2–, O–) from the sensing material. The special chemical reaction of the sensor between oxygen anions and the target gas at room temperature (RT) and 120 °C is the basis for the realization of dual-selective detection of ethanol and n-butanol. The sensing mechanism of the WO3/In2O3 heterojunction for ethanol/n-butanol has been systematically investigated based on energy band structure analysis and in situ Raman spectroscopic characterization. This work focuses on the potential of metal oxide-based S-scheme heterojunctions for high-performance gas sensor applications.

Efficient light harvesting over a CdS/In2O3 photonic crystal photocatalyst for hydrogenation of 4-nitroaniline to p-phenylenediamine

Xiaofang Li,Changqian Wang,Bo Li,Yu Shao,Danzhen Li

Efficient light harvesting was observed over CdS photodeposited on In2O3 photonic crystals during the photocatalytic hydrogenation of 4-nitroaniline to p-phenylenediamine. The highest conversion of 4-nitroaniline and selectivity of p-phenylenediamine over the In2O3 photonic crystal supported CdS were ∼93% and ∼99%, respectively, which were better than that achieved for commercial hexagonal CdS. The existence of the photonic crystal structure was responsible for the higher efficiency of In2O3 photonic crystal supported CdS. The ordered structure facilitated the mass transport. The elaborate tuning of the photonic band gap activated the slow photon enhancement effect on the blue edge for intensifying the light harvesting efficiency of CdS. Moreover, CdS supported on In2O3 photonic crystals exhibited higher photocatalytic stability than that on the In2O3 nanocrystals. The mechanism of photocatalytic hydrogenation over In2O3 photonic crystal supported CdS was discussed. Our results provided guidance for efficiently utilizing light for photocatalysis by applying photonic crystals as support.

Boosted Photoelectrochemical Seawater Splitting by CoOOH-Modified Ti-Fe2O3/In2O3 by Synergy of Electronic Modulation and Heterojunction Construction

Songbo Wang,Yidan Wang,Jia Li,Shuang Guo,Chengzhen Meng,Lun Pan,Ji-Jun Zou,Yawei Shi,Lei Zhang,Zhen Yin,Na Tang

In order to address the current energy and environmental challenges, photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has been widely studied, and the key point about the efficient PEC process is how to develop highly active photoanode catalysts. In this article, we report a two-step hydrothermal and electrodeposition approach to prepare a cobalt (oxy)hydroxide (CoOOH)-modified Ti-Fe2O3-In2O3 electrode by synergy of electron modulation and a heterojunction structure for promoting PEC water splitting. Under a bias of 1.23 V vs RHE, the optimized Ti-Fe2O3-In2O3/CoOOH photoanode demonstrated remarkable photocurrent density and hydrogen evolution rate as high as 1.33 mA cm–2 and 22.8 μmol cm–2 h–1, which was 5.11-fold and 5.14-fold that of bare α-Fe2O3, respectively. Characterization results indicate that Ti-doping will alter the electronic structure and improve the charge carrier density, whereas the construction of a heterojunction can realize the spatial separation of charge carriers. Meanwhile, the outer CoOOH ultrathin layer can provide a large amount of oxygen evolution reaction sites and promote the surface reaction. This work suggests that the PEC performance of Fe2O3-based photoanodes can be improved effectively by the synergy of electronic modulation and heterojunction construction.

Atomic layer deposition of SnO2 on In2O3 enables ultrasensitive NO2 detection at room temperature and DFT mechanism research

Qiumei Wang,Lihao Zhou,Shaobo Li,Xiao Chang,Xianghong Liu,Jun Zhang

The unique electronic and chemical properties of metal oxide heterostructures are critical to the development of room temperature (RT) sensors. In this work, we report the design of In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 heterostructures based on atomic layer deposition (ALD), which regulates the energy band structure of the material and promotes the electron transfer, thus enhancing the adsorption of target gases. The sensor based on In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 demonstrates outstanding sensing performance at RT with an extreme response of 2900 to 10 ppm NO 2 , which to our knowledge outperforms the reported metal oxide sensors, as well as a detection limit of 61 ppb. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the charge transfer (0.494 e) and interaction energy (2.19 eV) between In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 and NO 2 are significantly enhanced. This work highlights the critical function of heterostructured materials in enhancing the sensing capabilities of semiconductors, providing some hints for the design of ultrasensitive NO 2 sensors.

Interfacial Electronic Interaction in In2O3/Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-Modified Carbon Heterostructures for Enhanced Electroreduction of CO2 to Formate

Ying Zhu,Shaosong Ding,Xingpu Wang,Rong Zhang,Xiaochen Feng,Xiang Sun,Guozheng Xiao,Ying Zhu

Formate, as an important chemical raw material, is considered to be one of the most promising products for industrialization among CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2RR) products, but it still suffers from poor selectivity and a low formation rate at a high current density on account of the competitory hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, the heterogeneous nanostructure was constructed by anchoring In2O3 nanoparticles on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-modified carbon black (In2O3/PC), in which the PEDOT polymer interface layer could immobilize In2O3 nanoparticles and obtain a notable reduction in electron transfer resistance among the In2O3 particles, showing a 27% increase in the total electron transfer rate. The optimized In2O3/PC with rich heterogeneous interfaces selectively reduced CO2 to formate with a high FE of 95.4% and a current density of 251.4 mA cm–2 under −1.18 V vs RHE. Also, the formate production rate for In2O3/PC was up to 7025.1 μmol h–1 cm–2, surpassing most previously reported CO2RR catalysts. The in situ XRD results revealed that In2O3 particles were reduced to metallic indium (In) as catalytic active sites during CO2RR. DFT calculations verified that a strong interface interaction between In sites and PC induced electron transfer from In sites to PC, which could optimize the charge distribution of active sites, accelerate electron transfer, and elevate the p-band center of In sites toward the Fermi level, thereby lowering the adsorption energy of *OCHO intermediates for CO2 conversion to formate.

Efficient Visible-Light Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution over the In2O3@Ni2P Heterojunction of an In-Based Metal–Organic Framework

Yi-Shan Ouyang,Yu Jiang,Shuang Ni,Run-Yuan Jiang,Jian Wang,Wen-Bin Wang,Wei Zhang,Qing-Yuan Yang

Although the engineering of visible-light-driven photocatalysts with appropriate bandgap structures is beneficial for generating hydrogen (H2), the construction of heterojunctions and energy band matching are extremely challenging. In this study, In2O3@Ni2P (IO@NP) heterojunctions are attained by annealing MIL-68(In) and combining the resulting material with NP via a simple hydrothermal method. Visible-light photocatalysis experiments validate that the optimized IO@NP heterojunction exhibits a dramatically improved H2 release rate of 2485.5 μmol g–1 h–1 of 92.4 times higher than that of IO. Optical characterization reveals that the doping of IO with an NP component promotes the rapid separation of photo-induced carriers and enables the capture of visible light. Moreover, the interfacial effects of the IO@NP heterojunction and synergistic interaction between IO and NP that arises through their close contact mean that plentiful active centers are available to reactants. Notably, eosin Y (EY) acts as a sacrificial photosensitizer and has a significant effect on the rate of H2 generation under visible light irradiation, which is an aspect that needs further improvement. Overall, this study describes a feasible approach for synthesizing promising IO-based heterojunctions for use in practical photocatalysis.

Multiple carrier-transfer pathways in a flower-like In2S3/CdIn2S4/In2O3 ternary heterostructure for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production

Dandan Ma,Jian-Wen Shi,Yajun Zou,Zhaoyang Fan,Jinwen Shi,Linhao Cheng,Diankun Sun,Zeyan Wang,Chunming Niu

A novel flower-like In2S3/CdIn2S4/In2O3 (ICS) ternary heterostructure (HS) is rationally constructed for the first time by a series of carefully designed procedures. In2O3 nanoflakes are the main constituent units which assemble into a flower-like skeleton structure, and CdIn2S4 nanoparticles are in situ generated on the surface of In2O3 nanoflakes through the transformation of CdS quantum dots (QDs) while In2S3 nanoparticles are in situ produced at the region between CdIn2S4 nanoparticles and In2O3 nanoflakes resulting from a synchronous sulfuration procedure. As expected, the rationally designed ICS ternary HSs display significantly enhanced photocatalytic H2 production, especially ICS5 (sulfurized for 5 h) with the highest H2 evolution rate of 20.04 μmol h−1 (10 mg catalyst is used for photocatalytic reaction), which is 26.7 times and 2.6 times higher than that of pure In2O3 (0.75 μmol h−1) and In2S3/In2O3 binary HS (7.88 μmol h−1), respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the multiple interfaces formed in the ICS HSs, including the CdIn2S4–In2O3 interface, the In2S3–In2O3 interface, and the CdIn2S4–In2O3–In2S3 interface, which construct multiple pathways for the transfer of photogenerated charge carriers, effectively promoting the photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Metal-organic framework-derived nitrogen-doped carbon-coated hollow tubular In2O3/CdZnS heterojunction for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Zhang Weijie,Zhao Shunshun,Qin Hongjie,Zheng Qiling,Zhang Penghui,Li Xiaojuan,Li ChuanLin,Wang TongKai,Li Na,Zhang Shouwei,Xu Xijin

Using photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) technology is a powerful way to solve the energy shortage. In this study, a hexagonal hollow tubular nitrogen-doped carbon (N−C)-coated In 2 O 3 /CdZnS heterojunction photocatalyst was in situ synthesized using a simple oil bath heating method. Results show that the PHE rate of N−C/In 2 O 3 /CdZnS (∼22.87 µmol h −1 ) is ∼2.4 times that of pristine CdZnS (∼9.49 µmol h −1 ) and ∼54.5 times that of pristine In 2 O 3 (∼0.42 µmol h −1 ). After four cycles, the PHE rate can still retain more than 90% of the original. Its excellent photocatalytic performance is mainly attributed to the following aspects: (1) the N−C layer acts as an electron transport bridge, which ensures the efficient electron transfer of the photocatalytic reaction; (2) the hollow tubular structure enhances the light reflection and absorption; (3) the N−C/In 2 O 3 /CdZnS heterostructure improves the carrier recombination and photocorrosion; (4) the large specific surface area and mesoporous structure provide a large number of reactive sites. This study provides a novel idea for designing visible-light-type heterojunction catalysts.

Co-Promoted In2O3/ZrO2 Integrated with Ultrathin Nanosheet HZSM-5 as Efficient Catalysts for CO2 Hydrogenation to Gasoline

Wenhui Li,Jiaxing Zhang,Xiao Jiang,Minchen Mu,Anfeng Zhang,Chunshan Song,Xinwen Guo

Carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrogenation to gasoline through the methanol-mediate route using the metal oxide/ZSM-5 tandem catalyst has attracted considerable attention to reduce the pernicious effect of CO2 on global climate change and to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. The C5+ molecules are preferred to pass through the straight channels of ZSM-5 zeolite, where side reactions may occur on the acid sites and the catalyst is deactivated due to pore blockage. Thus, the thickness of ZSM-5 along the straight channel, namely the b-axis direction, is crucial to manipulating the product distribution and catalyst lifetime. Here, HZSM-5 nanosheets with different thicknesses (2 nm to 2 μm) along the b-axis were synthesized controllably and composited with In2O3/ZrO2 as tandem catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to gasoline. In2O3–ZrO2/HZSM-5 with a thickness of 20 nm shows the highest selectivity toward C5+ hydrocarbons under isoconversional conditions and no deactivation after 150 h of reaction with less carbon deposition compared with the 2 μm one. Comparative activity tests and characterization results demonstrate that an appropriate length of straight channels can benefit the production of C5+ hydrocarbons through the polymerization of short-chain molecules while preventing the cracking of long-chain hydrocarbons on acid sites. Adding an appropriate loading of Co into tandem catalysts with optimal composition gives rise to further enhancement in CO2 conversion by 10%, and a slight increase in C5+ selectivity. This can be attributed to the Co-induced hydrogen spillover from metallic Co to support ZrO2, facilitating the formation of the key intermediate and its subsequent hydrogenation steps. This study provides insights into designing effective and anti-carbon deposition tandem catalysts for CO2-to-gasoline by manipulating the channel length–resident time–acidity relationship and the promoter effect.

Pd Supported on MIL-68(In)-Derived In2O3 Nanotubes as Superior Catalysts to Boost CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol

Zhongjie Cai,Jiajun Dai,Wen Li,Kok Bing Tan,Zhongliang Huang,Guowu Zhan,Jiale Huang,Qingbiao Li

Utilization of CO2 and its conversion to value-added chemicals are highly desirable to alleviate the environmental concerns caused by the massive anthropogenic CO2 emission. Although In2O3/Pd have been employed as efficient catalysts for hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol, the electronic effects by strong metal–support interaction (SMSI) between Pd and In2O3 are poorly understood, which is greatly affected by the morphology of In2O3. Herein, we use MIL-68(In) nanorod as a morphological template for the synthesis of hollow In2O3 nanotubes (h-In2O3) and the preparation of supported Pd catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Interestingly, loading Pd on h-In2O3 showed a much higher performance than In2O3 with other morphologies, which exhibited almost unchanged CO2 conversion of 10.5%, methanol selectively of 72.4%, and methanol space-time yield of 0.53 gMeOH h–1 gcat–1 over 100 h on stream at 3 MPa and 295 °C. After in-depth characterizations, we found that the different electronic properties of Pd species on In2O3 can be finely tuned by diverse synthetic conditions, which were responsible for high activity and stability. The molar fraction of Pd2+ species in the h-In2O3/Pd catalyst reached 67.6%, 3.2 times that of the In2O3@Pd catalyst (21.3%), due to the different surface chemistry of In2O3. Density function theory results indicated that the Pd donated more electrons to the curved In2O3 (222) surface than the pristine surface, and Pd2+ was critical to facilitate H2 adsorption and formation of the surface oxygen vacancy. This work demonstrates that controlling the morphology of In2O3 can modify both the Pd electronic property and SMSI between Pd and In2O3, which are the origins of the high catalytic performance.

Atomically dispersed Ptn+ species as highly active sites in Pt/In2O3 catalysts for methanol synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation

Zhe Han,Chizhou Tang,Jijie Wang,Landong Li,Can Li

Hydrogenation of CO 2 into methanol using the H 2 produced from renewable energy is a promising way for carbon capture and utilization. Therefore, the methanol synthesis catalysts with high methanol selectivity are highly desired. In this work, we found that the methanol selectivity of In 2 O 3 catalyst can be significantly enhanced by introducing a small amount of Pt. Methanol selectivity can be increased from 72.2% (In 2 O 3 ) to 91.1% (0.58 wt.% Pt/In 2 O 3 ) at 220 °C. The introduced Pt atoms are doped into the In 2 O 3 , forming atomically dispersed Pt n+ species, most of which are stable under working conditions. It is proposed that the atomically dispersed Pt n+ species are responsible for the enhanced methanol selectivity, while Pt nanoparticles on In 2 O 3 mainly boost the reverse water-gas shift reaction (CO 2  + H 2  → CO + H 2 O).

Integrating photocatalytic reduction of CO2 with selective oxidation of tetrahydroisoquinoline over InP–In2O3 Z-scheme p-n junction

Zhao Bohang,Huang Yi,Liu Dali,Yu Yifu,Zhang Bin

The development of a facile strategy to construct stable hierarchal porous heterogeneous photocatalysts remains a great challenge for efficient CO 2 reduction. Additionally, hole-trapping sacrificial agents (e.g., triethanolamine, triethylamine, and methanol) are mostly necessary, which produce useless chemicals, and thus cause costs/environmental concerns. Therefore, utilizing oxidation ability of holes to develop an alternative photooxidation reaction to produce value-added chemicals, especially coupled with CO 2 photoreduction, is highly desirable. Here, an in situ partial phosphating method of In 2 O 3 is reported for synthesizing InP–In 2 O 3 p-n junction. A highly selective photooxidation of tetrahydroisoquinoline (THIQ) into value-added dihydroisoquinoline (DHIQ) is to replace the hole driven oxidation of typical sacrificial agents. Meanwhile, the photoelectrons of InP–In 2 O 3 p-n junction can induce the efficient photoreduction of CO 2 to CO with high selectivity and stability. The evolution rates of DHIQ and CO are 2 and 3.8 times higher than those of the corresponding In 2 O 3 n-type precursor, respectively. In situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron spin resonance are utilized to confirm that the direct Z-scheme mechanism of InP–In 2 O 3 p-n junction accelerate the efficient separation of photocarriers.
