To investigate the influence of magnetic materials combined with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as fillers on the membrane properties, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) functionalized by mixed acids (V H2SO4 :V HNO3 =3:1) were loaded by Fe 3 O 4 through a hydrothermal method. The obtained MWCNTs/Fe 3 O 4 hybrids were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Infrared spectroscopy (IR) spectrum, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) and then blended with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to prepare ultrafiltration (UF) membranes through a phase inversion process. Simultaneously, two other UF membranes, PVC blended with acid-treated MWCNTs and PVC blended with nothing, were also prepared. The results showed that the membrane porosity and mean pore size increased slightly with the addition of fillers. Static contact angle showed that MWCNTs/Fe 3 O 4 hybrids improved the hydrophilicity of membrane surface better than the acid-treated MWCNTs. Pure water flux increased consistently with the hydrophilicity of the membrane surface. SEM and atomic force microscope (AFM) images showed that the MWCNTs/Fe 3 O 4 blended membrane formed a relatively complete pore structure throughout the cross-section and had a rougher top surface. However, the mechanical properties of membranes with fillers were reduced compared with the pristine PVC membrane. The rejections of membranes for Bovine serum albumin (BSA), Bisphenol A (BPA), and Norfloxacin (NOR) showed that MWCNTs/Fe 3 O 4 played an important role in trapping pollutants in membrane filtration. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graphene oxide (GO)-based membranes provide an encouraging opportunity to support high separation efficiency for wastewater treatment. However, due to the relatively weak interaction between GO nanosheets, it is difficult for bare GO-based membranes to survive in cross-flow filtration. In addition, the permeation flux of the bare GO membrane is not high sufficiently due to its narrow interlayer spacing. In this study, GO membranes interlinked with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) via covalent bonds were fabricated on modified polyacrylonitrile (PAN) supports by vacuum filtration. Due to the strong bonds between GO, MWCNTs and the PAN membrane, the membranes could be used for the treatment of simulated nuclear wastewater containing strontium via a cross-flow process. The result showed a high flux of 210.7 L/(m 2 h) at 0.4 MPa, which was approximately 4 times higher than that of commercial nanofiltration membranes. The improved water permeation was attributed to the nanochannels created by the interlinked MWCNTs in the GO layers. In addition, the hybrid membrane exhibited a high rejection of 93.4% for EDTA-chelated Sr 2+ in an alkaline solution, and could also be used to separate Na + /Sr 2+ mixtures. These results indicate that the MWCNTs-interlinked GO membrane has promising prospects for application in radioactive waste treatment.

Cobalt ferrite nanoparticles loaded on multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) magnetic hybrids have been demonstrated to be promising magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents and drug carriers. However, the hydrophobic, less biocompatible characteristics and low loading capacity for the drug hamper their wide biological applications. To solve the above problem, an alternative strategy is to coat the MWCNTs@CoFe2O4 nanoparticles with a mesoporous silica (mSiO2) shell. Herein, the reasonable fabrication process results in successful coating mSiO2 on the as-obtained MWCNTs@CoFe2O4 nanoparticles, forming well-defined core–shell-structured MWCNTs@CoFe2O4@mSiO2 nanocomposites. The as-synthesized mesoporous nanocarrier possesses a high surface area and large pore volume for the loading of the drug, and has a superparamagnetic feature for drug targeting. Moreover, the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded MWCNTs@CoFe2O4@mSiO2 nanoplatforms show an excellent pH-responsive drug release character within 48 h. Therefore, a novel nanocarrier based on MWCNTs@CoFe2O4@mSiO2 was proposed, and its potential application for targeted cancer therapy was highlighted.

The combination of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) can significantly improve their electrochemical performance. However, in most cases, chemical pre-treatment of MWCNTs is inevitable, which may compromise the ideal performance of the final composites. Herein, via a noncovalent functionalization method, PMo 12 @ZIF-67 was in situ grown on the surfaces of MWCNTs with the assistance of a new dispersant containing two triethylenetetramine (TETA) segments. In order to enhance the coordination of Co metal ions with the surface of MWCNTs, phenolic hydroxyl groups were incorporated into the dispersant through reaction with gallic acid (GA). After annealing, homogeneous CNT/Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 /Co composites were obtained, and they showed excellent performance on oxygen evolution reaction (OER). At a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , the lowest overpotential is 263 mV, of which the performance is superior to that achieved by other in situ growth methods. The uniform distribution of coordination sites and subsequent in situ growth of MOFs on MWCNTs improved the electrical conductivity of the derivatives, thereby enhanced the utilization of catalytic active sites. This study presents a novel approach for synthesizing carbon-doped electrocatalytic materials, which demonstrates significant potential in various electrochemical applications.

Carbendazim (CBZ) is widely used for crop protection and its residues threaten human health and the environment. Therefore, developing an effective electrocatalyst is important for the extremely sensitive detection of CBZ. Lattice-strain engineering is an effective strategy to change its electronic structure and ultimately optimize the catalytic performance of materials, which can be used as a modification method to improve the detection performance of electrochemical sensors. Herein, a NiFeLDH@HsGY-NH2/MWCNTs heterojunction with strain effect is prepared by the electrostatic self-assembly method. The structure, morphology, composition, crystallinity and electrochemical performance of NiFeLDH@HsGY-NH2/MWCNTs are analyzed using various instrumental techniques, in which geometric phase analysis (GPA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) images confirm the lattice-strain generated in NiFeLDH@HsGY-NH2/MWCNTs. The results indicate that the prepared electrochemical sensor exhibited an excellent response for carbendazim (CBZ) in the linear range of 0.05–50.00 μM with a detection limit of 10.00 nM (S/N = 3) under the optimal detection conditions. By analyzing the reasons for the improvement of the catalytic performance of the composite material, it is found that the composite of MWCNTs not only improves the conductivity of NiFeLDH but also regulates the electronic structure of metal atoms through double effects. This study provides new insights into the design of efficient and low-cost catalysts to facilitate electrochemical sensor applications.

A novel and facile electrochemical determination of Sertraline at nanomolar concentration using bimetallic MXene NbTiCT x and MWCNTs hybridized electrodes as sensing platforms is demonstrated. NbTiCT x /MWCNTs composites were produced by etching NbTiAlC to obtain NbTiCT x , and ultrasonically mixing this with MWCNTs. An electrochemical sensor based on NbTiCT x /MWCNTs nanocomposite modified (NbTiCT x /MWCNTs/GCE) was constructed, for use in the sensitive detection of Sertraline (SER). The successful preparation of NbTiCT x /MWCNTs and the electrochemical performance of the electrodes were verified by Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance characterization methods. The experimental results show that NbTiCT x /MWCNTs/GCE can increase the SER oxidation peak current, with two good linear relationships (R 2 = 0.9910 and 0.9967) between the current and the concentration of SER (5.0–10.0 μM and 10.0–100.0 μM), with a detection limit of 0.16 μM (S/N = 3). The sensor has good selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility and stability, and enables the sensitive determination of SER in human serum and urine samples of clinical biological fluids. It is believed that this work is significant and is of broad interest for work in innovative material development and biomedical applications.

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is an important reactive oxygen species, and its abnormal concentration can cause cell distortion and apoptosis, leading to occurrence of various diseases. Therefore, real-time and sensitive monitoring of H 2 O 2 is essential for early disease diagnosis and pathological research. Herein, a novel nanocomposite of Fe-porphyrin covalent organic frameworks decorated with molybdenum disulfide and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Fe-pCOFs/MoS 2 -MWCNTs), which had glorious enzyme-like activity, was reported for efficient electrochemical detection of H 2 O 2 . The prepared Fe-pCOFs nanosheets with a large specific surface area and fully dispersed Fe 2+ active sites, could enhance mass transfer and atomic utilization, thereby contributing to excellent catalytic efficiency toward H 2 O 2 . The flower-like MoS 2 nanoflakes not only could catalyze the reduction reaction of H 2 O 2 , but also could serve as co-catalyst and form a catalytic cycle with Fe 2+ of Fe-pCOFs, contributing the continuous emergence of catalytic active sites. The highly conductive MWCNTs was employed to promote electron transfer rate. Ultimately, the obtained Fe-pCOFs/MoS 2 -MWCNTs exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity and conductivity, significantly amplifying the H 2 O 2 response signal. Under the optimal conditions, the sensor had a wide detection range from 20 to 2650 μΜ for H 2 O 2 with a detection limit as low as 2.2 μΜ. Moreover, the sensor successfully recorded trace amounts of H 2 O 2 released from RAW264.7 cells, showing promising application for real-time and sensitive monitoring of H 2 O 2 in clinic or pathological research.

Accurate detection of benzimidazole pesticide thiophanate-methyl (TM) is of vital importance due to its harm to environmental safety and human health. Herein, for the first time, we developed a sensitive nonenzymatic electrochemical sensor for TM detection based on multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) functionalized bimetallic iron−copper organic frameworks (Fe/Cu MOF). The synthesized nanocomposites showed excellent electro-oxidation ability to TM owing to the synergistic effect between MWCNTs and Fe/Cu MOF. Fe/Cu MOF enhanced the specific surface area for MWCNTs and MWCNTs improved the conductivity for Fe/Cu MOF, which resulted in a nanocomposite with abundant catalytical active sites and superior conductivity, greatly amplifying the detection signal for TM. Under optimized conditions, the proposed sensor based on the composite presented a wide linearity from 0.3 nM to 200 nM which is wider than that of currently reported methods and a very low detection limit (LOD) of 0.1 nM far lower than the maximum residue levels (MRLs) enacted worldwide. Furthermore, the sensor showed good reproducibility, long-term stability and high anti-interference. Moreover, the sensor can be successfully employed for the determination of TM in apple and cucumber with good recoveries (80.96 %–105. 5 %), highlighting its excellent potential as an alternative to traditional techniques.

Wearable pressure sensors with exceptional performance are playing a crucial role in various fields such as electronic skin, human motion monitoring, medical diagnosis, and human-computer interaction. However, achieving both high sensitivity and a wide sensing range with simple fabrication and low cost has proven to be a significant challenge for sensors. In this study, a simple capacitive pressure sensor is proposed that multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are introduced into MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T X ) as a ‘bridge’. Then the electrode which has excellent conductivity is obtained by filtration of MXene solution and MXene/MWCNTs solution at intervals. Additionally, green and degradable cellulose paper is used as the dielectric layer. The fabricated pressure sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of 4.7 kPa −1 for low pressure from 0 to 1 kPa, a wide detection range of 0–700 kPa, ultra-fast response and recovery times of 46 ms and 62 ms, respectively, and an extremely low detection limit of 0.32 Pa. The sensor remains stable even after 4500 cycles and can accurately monitor the movement of the human joints. Furthermore, it can track human physiological signals, which is beneficial for medical diagnosis and disease prevention, and has significant potential for application in the wearable technology field.

This paper presents a new electrochemical DNA biosensor constructed using a substrate electrode composed of a novel nanocomposite material prepared using gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and further modified with an Au electrode (AuE), which was used as the substrate electrode. A single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) probe was immobilized on the Au-NPs/CS–MWCNTs/AuE electrode by means of facile gold–thiol affinity, which resulted in hybridization with the target ssDNA sequence. Hybridization reactions were assessed by using the reduction peak current of methylene blue (MB) as an electrochemical indicator. The advantages of the nanomaterials were found to include high surface area, favorable electronic properties, and strong electrocatalytic activity . The amount of ssDNA adsorbed on the electrode surface was increased and the electrochemical response of MB accelerated. The differential pulse voltammetric responses of MB were in line with the specific target ssDNA sequence within the concentration range 1.0×10 −15 –1.0×10 −8 M with the detection limit 3.3×10 −16 M (3 σ ). In the colony forming unit (CFU) we were able to detect 10 CFU mL −1 of Staphylococcus aureus in the tap water, achieving good discrimination ability between one- and three-base mismatched ssDNA sequences. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification products of S. aureus nuc gene sequence were also detected with satisfactory results.

Rhodamine B (RhB) is a synthetic organic xanthene dye that is harmful to human health. RhB can easily be illegally added to food as a colorant due to its cheap and abundant. This work presents a molecularly imprinted (MIP) electrochemical sensor for the determination of RhB by modifying ZIF-67-derived N-doped carbon composite interconnected by MWCNTs (NC@MWCNT) and MIP on the surface of glassy carbon electrode. The sensor exhibited excellent performance for RhB detection due to the outstanding conductivity of NC@MWCNT and the specific adsorption of MIP. Under optimized conditions, the sensor had a wide linear response range (0.001–1000 nM) and a low detection limit of 1 pM. The sensor exhibits remarkable selectivity and can distinguish RhB molecules from dye molecules with similar structures and common metal ions. This work introduces a simple, economical, sensitive, and selective electrochemical detection method for RhB trace detection.

Developing electrochemical biosensors to detect trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and nitrite (NaNO 2 ) helps address serious health risks by improving electron transfer in the enzyme’s active center, enabling accurate monitoring of these harmful substances in environmental and food safety applications. Herein, a novel electrochemical horseradish peroxidase (HRP) biosensor was fabricated by immobilizing on a multi-walled carbon nanotubes-black phosphorene (MWCNTs-BP) nanocomposite modified carbon ionic liquid electrode. The structure and enzyme interaction were characterized using SEM, TEM, FT-IR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The MWCNTs-BP composite enhances electron transfer and interfacial conductivity, enabling efficient direct communication between HRP and the electrode. Under optimal conditions, the biosensor exhibited excellent sensitivity for TCA and NaNO 2 detection with linear ranges of 3.0–558.0 mmol/L (LOD as 1.0 mmol/L) and 0.1–13.6 mmol/L (LOD as 0.03 mmol/L), respectively. It was successfully applied to detect TCA and NaNO 2 in medical facial peel solutions and pickled vegetable soaking water samples, respectively, demonstrating strong practical applicability.
