Developing bone scaffolds with biomimetic architecture and bioactive signaling is essential for effective orthopedic repair. In this study, 16.6 wt% MgO incorporated hydroxyapatite (MgO/HA) scaffolds with a Gyroid Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) architecture were fabricated using a multi-stage route combining Digital Light Processing (DLP) 3D printing and Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). The resulting scaffolds maintained ∼60% porosity and exhibited an increase in compressive strength (7.27 MPa) compared to HA (4.24 MPa). The incorporation of MgO led to an increase in the degradation rate, facilitating the sustained release of bioactive Mg²⁺ ions. In vitro biological evaluations demonstrated a potent multi-lineage cellular response: the scaffolds enhanced rat mesenchymal stem cell (rMSC) proliferation and upregulated key osteogenic markers (RUNX2, ALP, and OCN), while simultaneously stimulating human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) by significantly upregulating angiogenic gene expressions (VEGF and Ang-1). These results indicate that the combination of MgO doping and TPMS architecture successfully establishes a robust osteogenesis-angiogenesis coupling effect alongside optimized mechanical performance, providing a highly promising candidate platform for patient-specific bone tissue engineering.

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol is considered to be a very important industrial process. In this work, non-noble Cu supported on MgO-Al 2 O 3 catalysts have been prepared by co-precipitation and have shown excellent catalytic performance for conversion of furfural to furfuryl alcohol in near-critical iso-propanol. The effects of the Cu state (reduction degree and dispersion) and loading in Cu/MgO-Al 2 O 3 , acidity of catalysts have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), N 2 adsorption and desorption (N 2 -BET) and temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH 3 -TPD), which have led to high activity for producing furfuryl alcohol. The results have shown that the selectivity of furfuryl alcohol has been influenced by the Cu state, Lewis acidity, reaction temperature and reaction time. The mechanisms, Lewis acid- and metal mediated hydrogenation, have shown that a desirable balance of Cu loading and Lewis acidity of catalyst has influenced the activity significantly. Almost 100% furfural conversion, with 89.3% furfuryl alcohol yield has been obtained. Cycling tests have shown that the prepared catalysts have been stable, where recycling the catalysts at least four times has not shown any reduction in activity.

The aim of our research reported in this paper was to develop electrospun (Sc2O3-MgO)/alizarin/polycaprolactone/polyvinylpyrrolidone nanofiber membranes with pH-responsive and antibacterial properties. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that alizarin (ALI) was uniformly distributed in the polycaprolactone/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PCL/PVP) matrix, forming pH-responsive membranes. The X-ray diffractometer (XRD), attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and thermal analysis results demonstrated that both ALI and Sc2O3-MgO loadings were effective. Moreover, the addition of 0.16 wt% ALI induced distinct color changes (from pale yellow to purple, pH = 2-12) in the ALI/PCL/PVP nanofiber membranes. This behavior stemmed from the hydroxyl group in ALI forming an intramolecular hydrogen bond with the carbonyl oxygen, enabling proton transfer. Furthermore, the ALI/PCL/PVP membranes containing 2.00 wt% Sc2O3-MgO showed good antibacterial effect against Escherichia coli (E. coli) within 24 h, of what indicating its strong antibacterial activity. In addition, a comprehensive 8-day analysis was conducted on the pH, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) and total number of live bacteria colonies of the shrimp, as well as the color changes in the film. The experiment proved that the shrimp not covered by the film became highly spoiled on the 4th day, while the shrimp covered with the SAPP-2-3 nanofiber membranes only reached a state of high spoilage on the 6th day. Therefore, the SAPP-2-3 nanofiber membranes can effectively extend the shelf life of the shrimp by 2 days. We believe this study provides a new strategy for the research of multifunctional smart food packaging films.

This study investigated the effect of laser texturing parameters on the shear strength and microstructure of SiC ceramic joints, which were joined using CaO-Al 2 O 3 -MgO-Y 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (CAMYS) glass filler. It was demonstrated that laser texturing promotes the formation of SiO 2 on the surface and subsequent filler adhesion. Groove depth and spacing were identified as critical factors for joint performance. Excessive groove depth (∼60 μm) caused incomplete groove filling and reduced joint strength, due to void formation. Similarly, decreased texturing spacing (∼200 μm) induced excessive thermal damage and compromised joint robustness, as observed in laser-treated ceramic surfaces. Among the five evaluated texturing configurations, the optimal condition, defined by a groove depth of ∼30 μm and spacing of ∼500 μm, yielded a maximum shear strength of 80 ± 12 MPa, representing a 77.8 % improvement over untextured joints (45 ± 10 MPa).

There has been increasing attention devoted to the treatment of wastewater to eliminate organic dyes. Here, a composite material was developed using SiO 2 matrix material obtained from yellow phosphorus slag and loaded with MgO , then examined for its ability to absorb the malachite green dye. The influence of a variety of variables, such as time, temperature, pH, and initial simulated effluent concentration, was investigated. These investigations demonstrated that when using this SiO 2 -MgO adsorbent, a maximum malachite green adsorption rate of 97.72 % was obtained, with precisely 115.64 mg g −1 of dye absorbed. Interestingly, the prepared SiO 2 -MgO was stable and regenerated successfully, exhibiting good performance throughout the four cycles. The specific surface area and pore size of the developed adsorbent composite material were found to be 352.76 m 2 g −1 and 2–10 nm, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry , X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analyses revealed that electrostatic adsorption, dipole-dipole H-bonding, ion exchange, and Yoshida H-bonding interactions were among the mechanisms used by this SiO 2 -MgO composite to adsorb malachite green. Importantly, this adsorbent can be simply and efficiently produced, making it well-suited to lowering MgO utilization and raising SiO 2 adsorption efficacy while allowing for greater yellow phosphorus slag utilization and the establishment of a novel solid waste treatment approach.

This work examines the impact of sintering thermal history on kinetics of grain growth for 1264 ppm (0.1 wt%) MgO-doped alumina. Results suggest that sintering with a high heating rate in the order of ∼10 3 °C min −1 retards grain growth rate. By contrast, a slow heating rate of 5°C min −1 resulted in an increase in grain growth constant by a factor of ∼4. The segregation of Mg to grain boundaries, favored by short sintering duration, is considered to be one of the possible factors contributing to the retarded grain growth rate for the rapidly heated compacts. Furthermore, it is proposed that the simultaneous combination of retarded grain boundary migration rate and limited surface-diffusion-driven grain coarsening, promoted by rapid heating, enables pressure-less fabrication of translucent alumina without a need for vacuum or hydrogen atmosphere. In fact, it is demonstrated that weakly translucent alumina can be produced at relatively low temperatures of 1475–1550°C by sintering with a high heating rate (herein, ∼10 3 °C min −1 ) in ambient atmosphere.

Mesoporous silica cocoon materials (MSNCs) and MgO doped mesoporous silica cocoons (MgO-MSNCs) with the cocoon-like hierarchical morphology and different alkalinities were synthesized as carriers for acidic drugs. Indomethacin (IMC) was selected as a model drug and loaded into carriers. All materials and the drug-loaded samples were characterized by nitrogen adsorption, FTIR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The effect of the Mg/Si molar ratio on the kinetics and equilibrium of IMC adsorption on MgO-MSNCs was thoroughly examined, and it was found that the increase in the Mg/Si molar ratio resulted in an increasing IMC adsorption rate due to the increased affinity between alkaline MgO-MSNCs and weak acid IMC. The adsorption kinetics fitted a pseudo second-order model well. The Freundlich isotherm showed a better fit, indicating that the coverage of IMC on the surface of MgO-MSNCs was heterogeneous. The maximum adsorption capacity of adsorbent was calculated by the Langmuir isotherm equation. The Temkin equation provided further support that the IMC adsorption on MgO-MSNCs was dominated by a chemisorption process. MgO-MSNCs also have the advantage of allowing an adjustment of the drug release rate of weak acid drug. The cytotoxicity assay indicated good biocompatibility of MgO-MSNCs. Our research on MgO-MSNCs carriers demonstrated their potential therapeutic benefit for safe and effective management of IMC adsorption and in vitro release.

Polymer dielectric materials are attracting wide focus in electronics, but their low energy density limits miniaturization and intelligent application. In recent years, the sandwich-structured has offered an ideal way to enhance the energy storage performance of polymer materials. In this work, the symmetrically sandwich composite dielectrics were prepared, containing an outer layer of poly (vinylidene fluoride-trifluoro ethylene chlorofluoride)@titanium dioxide (P (VDF-TrFE-CFE)@TiO 2 ) and an inner layer of poly (methyl methacrylate)@magnesium oxide (PMMA@MgO). The sandwich structure can combine the advantages of the excellent breakdown strength of PMMA and the superior polarization strength of P (VDF-TrFE-CFE). Moreover, TiO 2 with a high dielectric constant further improves the polarization strength, and the insulation performance enhances by MgO with a large band gap. The experimental results show that 0.5–1–0.5 sandwich composite dielectric has the most excellent breakdown strength of 633.8 kV/mm, and a discharge energy density of 17.16 J/cm 3 with an efficiency of 70.1%. This work offers experimental guidance for the development of outstanding energy storage performance of polymer dielectric capacitors.

The purpose of this research was to obtain the composite nanofiber membranes with efficient antibacterial property using synthetic magnesium-based antibacterial agents. Based on the antibacterial mechanism of MgO nanoparticles (MgONPs), the MgO nanorods (MgONRs) with surface nano textures (M-SNT) were designed to increase the effective contact area of MgONRs and bacteria, which achieved an excellent antibacterial property. The effect of the calcination temperature on the surface nano textures morphological and the antibacterial property of the M-SNT were systematically researched. When the calcination temperature reached 600 °C (M-SNT6), the surface nano textures of M-SNT6 was uniform and the antibacterial property was the most excellent, and the antibacterial rate was better than that of the commercial MgONPs (C-M). The highly-effective antibacterial nanofiber membranes were fabricated by loading 2.5 wt% M-SNT6 on polycaprolactone/polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PCL/PVP) substrates through electrospinning technology, which presented excellent antibacterial rate of 100% against E. coli .

Alkali metal molten salts (AMS) have shown exceptional potential in enhancing the CO 2 adsorption capacity of MgO-based sorbents at moderate temperatures. However, significant challenges still persist in terms of their thermal stability and recyclability due to sintering issues. In this study, a MgO-SrO composite sorbent was prepared using modified methanol evaporation-induced surface precipitation and promoted by molten nitrate to facilitate CO 2 adsorption at moderate temperatures. Adsorption kinetics revealed that the chemisorption process dominated the CO 2 adsorption on the surface of the MgO-SrO sorbent, with intraparticle diffusion being the main limiting step. Further investigation into the thermal stability and recyclability showed that the MgO-SrO sorbent retained good adsorption performance after 15 cycles of adsorption–desorption. By exploring the adsorption mechanism through Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the participation mechanism of SrO during CO 2 adsorption was elucidated by examining the charge transfer and bonding strength of surface O atoms on the MgO. This study provides new insights for enhancing the thermal stability and recyclability of MgO-based sorbents under moderate temperature conditions.

Due to their high porosity, large specific surface area, and structural similarity with the extracellular matrix (ECM), electrospun nanofiber membranes are often endowed with the antibacterial properties for biomedical applications. The purpose of this study was to synthesize nano-structured Sc2O3-MgO by doping Sc3+, calcining at 600 °C, and then loading it onto the PCL/PVP substrates with electrospinning technology with the aim of developing new efficient antibacterial nanofiber membranes for tissue engineering. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) were used to study the morphology of all formulations and analyze the types and contents of the elements, and an X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier transform attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) were used for further analysis. The experimental results showed that the PCL/PVP (SMCV-2.0) nanofibers loaded with 2.0 wt% Sc2O3-MgO were smooth and homogeneous with an average diameter of 252.6 nm; the antibacterial test indicated that a low load concentration of 2.0 wt% Sc2O3-MgO in PCL/PVP (SMCV-2.0) showed a 100% antibacterial rate againstEscherichia coli(E. coli).Keywords:nano-textured;Sc2O3-MgO;antibacterial;electrospinning

Mesoporous MgO has been used as an adsorbent for the removal of contaminants in water and exhibited outstanding performances. However, the agglomeration phenomena of nanoscale MgO adsorbents suppressed the adsorption capabilities. Herein, compound citrate and propionate ligands were selected as template-free precursors to fabricate the electrospun mesoporous MgO ceramic fibers . The MgO ceramic fibers possessed mesoporous structure with high surface area of 232.34 m 2 /g and high total pore volume of 0.560 cm 3 /g. Structure and composition of fibers heat-treated in air and water vapor were investigated systematically. And the MgO ceramic fiber showed high adsorption capacities of 2983.4 mg/g and 1824.0 mg/g for Pb(II) and Cd(II), respectively. The interaction mechanism between MgO fibers and heavy metal ions were thoroughly discussed. The high capacity of mesoporous MgO ceramic fiber was benefited from the hydroxyl-rich surface to release sufficient OH - and the good movability in water. Mesoporous MgO ceramic fibers prepared in the present method with fine quality might become an effective prescription for heavy metal pollution.
