Dielectric thin film capacitors are expected to be a promising candidate for high-performance energy storage devices due to their high power density, fast charge/discharge speed, and excellent stability. Nevertheless, it remains a challenging endeavor to develop dielectrics with excellent energy storage density comparable to that of commercial batteries. In this work, lead-free 0.8SrTiO 3 -0.2BiFeO 3 (0.8STO-0.2BFO) thin films with coexisting amorphous and nanocrystalline structure were prepared by a sol-gel method. The heat-treatment temperature was adjusted to form polar-nano regions, thereby modulate the breakdown strength and dielectric polarization, and increase the energy storage density. The electric potential, electric field, and current density of the films with different amorphous/crystalline volume fractions were evaluated by the finite element simulation to further verify that the proper crystallization can result in the improved polarization performance and increased breakdown strength of the films, which are beneficial to the enhancement of energy storage performance. Through structural tailoring, the 0.8STO-0.2BFO film annealed at 550 °C demonstrates the optimal energy storage properties with a giant discharge energy storage density of 65 J/cm 3 and high efficiency of 75% at room temperature. Simultaneously, a broad temperature stability (20–160 °C), superb operating frequency stability (20 Hz-2 kHz), and excellent fatigue endurance (6.3 ×10 5 ) are observed without appreciable degradation of the energy storage performance. The excellent energy storage performance indicates a widespread potential of 0.8STO-0.2BFO films in pulse power applications, such as consumer electronics, microelectronics, and medical devices .

The charge transport between layers of layered double hydroxide (LDH) with structural stability is generally considered as a key factor in restricting electrochemical performances. Herein, we report the surface spatial confinement effect on Mn–Co LDH@carbon dots (CDs) to enhance charge transfer and the stable structure for high-performance supercapacitors. The surface confined effect should be characterized as the charge transfer and interaction between Mn–Co LDH and CDs using density functional theory calculations. CDs can improve the density of states near the Fermi level to achieve an enhanced conductivity. The geometric structure can remain stable at room temperature within 200 fs by using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The two-electrode device gained the energy density of 79 W h kg–1 and a power density of 666 W kg–1 at 1 A g–1. This design concept will help to design, prepare, and assemble the high-efficiency and long-lifetime electrochemical energy storage devices based on various layered materials.

The cobalt carbide (Co2C) innovatively prepared from Co–Mn layered double hydroxide (CoMn LDH) has been investigated and evaluated toward its alternative synthesis conditions and different catalytic performances. Along with various characterization techniques, the preparation basically contains four steps (synthesis of CoMn LDH, calcination, reduction, and crystallization) that transform CoMn LDH to CoMn spinel and then to Co2C. Catalyst evaluation toward toluene pyrolysis was conducted. The sample with Co2C exhibited almost 100% conversion rate of toluene, where the resulting hydrogen yield (∼1.8%) is 6 times more than that of the blank test by using silica sand (∼0.3%), realizing the full transfer of hydrogen element from toluene to hydrogen molecule. Furthermore, based on the textural analysis and density functional dispersion correction calculation, which theoretically explained the easy accessibility of toluene to the crystal surface of Co2C(001) with a relatively high adsorption energy (about −280 kJ mol–1), it suggested that Co2C may expand more extensive applications in the field of catalysis.

Mn-doped ZnSe nanocrystals (Mn:ZnSe d-dots) that emit white light were synthesized in aqueous media in microfluidic reactors. White light emission from Mn:ZnSe d-dots was a result of combined emission of blue light (emission from non-coordinated surface selenium sites) and yellow light (4T1 → 6A1 emission from Mn2+ ions). Emission from non-coordinated surface selenium sites was realized by adjusting the ratio of the flow volumes of [Zn]/[Mn] and the mass of stabilizer added. Photoluminescence from the Mn:ZnSe d-dots was easily tuned from 580 to 602 nm by regulating flow volume. Under the optimal experimental conditions, Mn:ZnSe d-dots that emit white light with a quantum yield of about 10.2% were fabricated.

Manganese and cerium (Mn-Ce) oxides were prepared under nitrogen and high-temperature oxidation via a bath precipitation method as materials for electrode assemblies in supercapacitors. The prepared Mn-Ce oxide composite was demonstrated to have a high specific capacitance of 163.7 F g −1 with 78.4% cyclic stability after 3000 cycles at a current density of 1 A g −1 . Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy confirms that MnO 2 improves the conductivity of CeO 2 . Results from XPS analysis suggest that the introduction of MnO 2 enhances the concentrations of oxygen vacancies. Finally, band structure, density of states and Mulliken population were calculated using density functional theory, and the findings are consistent with the experimental and characterization results. Because of their excellent performances, Mn-Ce bimetallic oxides are promising electrode materials for supercapacitors. Graphic Abstract

Layered transition metal oxides are the most important cathode materials for Li/Na/K ion batteries. Suppressing undesirable phase transformations during charge-discharge processes is a critical and fundamental challenge towards the rational design of high-performance layered oxide cathodes. Here we report a shale-like Na x MnO 2 (S-NMO) electrode that is derived from a simple but effective water-mediated strategy. This strategy expands the Na + layer spacings of P2-type Na 0.67 MnO 2 and transforms the particles into accordion-like morphology. Therefore, the S-NMO electrode exhibits improved Na + mobility and near-zero-strain property during charge-discharge processes, which leads to outstanding rate capability (100 mAh g −1 at the operation time of 6 min) and cycling stability (>3000 cycles). In addition, the water-mediated strategy is feasible to other layered sodium oxides and the obtained S-NMO electrode has an excellent tolerance to humidity. This work demonstrates that engineering the spacings of alkali-metal layer is an effective strategy to stabilize the structure of layered transition metal oxides.

The detection of H 2 S, a highly toxic and corrosive gas prevalent in industrial processes, is imperative for safety and environmental monitoring. This necessitates the development of sensors exhibiting excellent sensitivity, quick response/recovery time, and superior selectivity. In this work, hollow and porous nanowires were fabricated via an ultrasound-assisted electrospinning method. By synergistically combining A-site deficiency engineering and B-site doping, a sensing material with high specific surface area and increased surface-adsorbed oxygen was achieved at a Mn doping level of 0.2. Operating at 130 °C, the gas-sensing material displays a high response of 113.5 toward 100 ppm H 2 S, approximately 15 times greater than that of pure LaFeO 3 along with rapid response/recovery time, respectively. The sensor also exhibits outstanding repeatability, selectivity, long-term stability, and humidity resistance. Moreover, it maintains remarkable sensing performance even at temperatures as high as 500 °C, indicating its potential for applications across a broad temperature range. Combined with theoretical calculations and experimental studies, the superior gas-sensing properties originate primarily from the synergistic effect between the nonstoichiometric behavior induced by A-site defects and the lattice distortion along with the increased active sites resulting from B-site doping. These findings pave the way for developing high-performance H 2 S sensing materials.

We successfully engineered a cactus-like Co 2 P nanocatalyst for overall water splitting by incorporating manganese to modulate its electronic structure. Incorporating Mn into Co 2 P enhances both HER and OER through optimized surface adsorption, leading to faster kinetics and improved catalytic efficiency. The Mn-Co 2 P catalyst delivers outstanding alkaline HER performance, requiring just 51 mV to drive 10 mA cm −2 while showing no degradation during a 48-h stability test. Notably, the OER overpotential is just 283 mV at 50 mA cm −2 with remarkable durability. Remarkably, when utilized as dual-function electrodes in a complete water electrolysis system, the Mn-Co 2 P-based system delivers 10 mA cm −2 at a low cell voltage of 1.523 V, along with brilliant long-term stability.

The advancement of catalysts that are both platinum-group-metal (PGM)-free and iron-free is essential for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which is kinetically slow, particularly in anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). One of the primary obstacles lies in achieving adequate activity and stability within the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) under real-world hydrogen-air operating conditions. Herein, an effective MnN4 site encased within N-doped carbon nanofibers (denoted as MnN4@N-CNFs) is designed for efficient ORR electrocatalysis. Benefiting from the electronic structure modulation of MnN4 moieties through strong interfacial coupling with the carbon matrix, and structural advantages of the 3D hierarchical porosity synergizing with N-doped carbon-MnN4 coordination systems, the as-resultant MnN4@N-CNFs demonstrate a high half-wave potential of 0.89 V, outstanding durability, and impressive methanol tolerance under alkaline environments, outperforming commercial Pt/C and a diversity of reported counterparts. Notably, the engineered catalyst demonstrates remarkable fuel cell performance with a peak power density of 222.0 mW cm–2 during practical AEMFC operation, while maintaining stable operation for over 15 h, representing a 3-fold enhancement over conventional Pt/C-based counterparts. This study establishes fundamental design principles for high-efficiency AEMFCs through atomic-level engineering of precisely coordinated metal–N–C active sites, providing a robust framework for next-generation electrocatalyst development.

The high energy consumption of lead anodes in zinc production is caused by the slow oxygen evolution reaction (OER). We made a La-Mn co-doped β-PbO2anode using electrodeposition to solve this issue. The XRD and XPS results show that adding La shrinks the lattice and changes the electron structure. This helps Mn4+change into active Mn3+and creates more active oxygen on the surface, making the reaction easier. EIS tests show that the charge transfer resistance (Rct) decreased by 4.2 times, decreasing from 147.6 Ω to 34.72 Ω at 1.0 V. The Bode phase peak also moved to a lower frequency (from 122 Hz to 0.215 Hz), proving that the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) increased significantly. At the industrial current of 50 mA cm−2, the anode shows a low overpotential of 840 mV and a Tafel slope of 265 mV dec−1. This improved performance saves 187.10 kWh of energy per ton of zinc. Therefore, the LaMn-β-PbO2anode is a promising and energy-saving option for industrial zinc production.

Lattice strain is commonly acknowledged as an effective strategy for tuning the catalytic activity of transition metals, yet its direct impact on Fenton-like reactions remains not fully understood. Herein, we introduce compressive strain into CoMn 2 O 4 via thermal expansion effects in conjunction with a component regulation strategy to enhance peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based Fenton-like activation. Structural analysis reveals that the compressively strained features enhance metal-oxygen bond coupling and induces the formation of a substantial amount of oxygen vacancies, which promote PMS adsorption and interfacial charge transfer. The obtained CoMn 2 O 4 (2:1)/PMS system demonstrates efficient and stable removal of organic pollutants via dominant nonradical pathways ( 1 O 2 ), and the reaction kinetics was enhanced from 0.078 min −1 to 0.264 min −1 , and the removal rate for sulfadiazine (SD) was as high as 99.8% within 30 min after five cycles. Furthermore, the remarkable feasibility of the CoMn 2 O 4 (2:1)/PMS system for practical wastewater treatment in real river water and pharmaceutical effluents was demonstrated, particularly through the development of a catalytic membrane filtration system and an in-situ floating water treatment device. This study offers new insights into the design of high-performance PMS activation catalysts via lattice strain engineering.

Chlorine species represent a major challenge for the catalytic oxidation of chlorine-containing volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) such as chlorobenzene (CB) because they readily deactivate catalysts. However, the underlying deactivation pathway remains incompletely understood, leaving a clear knowledge gap. Elucidating this pathway is therefore crucial for the rational optimization of CVOCs oxidation technologies. In this work, the structure-activity relationships of fresh MnO 2 , chlorine-poisoned MnO 2 -Cl, and regenerated MnO 2 -Cl-R were systematically investigated by integrating catalytic performance tests and kinetic analysis with comprehensive physicochemical characterization. The results show that chlorine species deteriorate the structural integrity of MnO 2 and disrupt the uniformity of elemental distribution through physical aggregation and chemical interactions, thereby reducing the accessibility and exposure of active sites. Mechanistically, during CB oxidation, chlorine poisoning decreases Mn dispersion and the ordering of oxygen species and lowers the fraction of high-valence Mn, collectively weakening the intrinsic oxidative capability of the active sites and causing performance loss. Regeneration removes a portion of surface chlorine deposits, alleviates manganese aggregation, and partially restores lattice‑oxygen participation, leading to an activity level between those of the fresh and poisoned catalysts. Nevertheless, complete recovery is not achieved: the stability of Mn Cl bonding, coupled with limitations arising from side reactions during regeneration, prevents full removal of chemically bound chlorine and leaves residual poisoning. Overall, this study clarifies the chlorine-poisoning pathway on MnO 2 and provides guidance for designing chlorine-tolerant catalysts and optimizing CVOCs catalytic oxidation processes.
