Enhanced broadband NIR luminescence of novel garnet-type Lu3Mg2GaSi2O12:Cr3+ phosphors with different fluxes

Yixin Sun,Yining Wang,Minliang Deng,Xiaole Xing,Yiying Zhu,Mengmeng Shang

The swift progress in portable spectrometer technology has fostered a widespread need for compact light sources. Concurrently, near-infrared phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (NIR pc-LEDs), characterized by their low cost and compact structure, emerge as an optimal choice. Inspired by phase optimization through fluxes, we successfully synthesized pure phase Lu 3 Mg 2 GaSi 2 O 12 (LMGS):Cr 3+ , 3 wt%MgF 2 luminescent materials by incorporating various fluxes including LiF, NaF, MgF 2 , CaF 2 , SrF 2 and BaF 2 . These materials emit broadband NIR light ranging from 620 nm to 1150 nm, with full width at half-maximums (FWHMs) exceeding 125 nm. By employing a dual-fluxes strategy to further enhance the luminescence intensity of Cr 3+ , the LMGS:3%Cr 3+ , 1 wt%NaF, 2 wt%MgF 2 sample exhibits a 2.45 times increase in emission intensity compared to the LMGS:3%Cr 3+ , 3 wt%MgF 2 sample. Concurrently, the quantum efficiency rises from 24 % to 46 %. Moreover, the integrated emission intensity of LMGS:3%Cr 3+ , 1 wt%NaF, 2 wt%MgF 2 retains at 75 %@425 K of its value at RT. Upon coupled with a 430 nm LED chip, the luminescent material exhibits an NIR output power of 43.8 mW@300 mA, indicating promising applications in rapid night identification, night vision and non-destructive testing.

Erbium-based hydrothermal YOF with stark sublevels for in vivo NIR II luminescence nanothermometer

Zhenghao Liu,Ziyue Ju,Hanyu Liu,Zhan Wang,Ruichan Lv

Rare earth luminescent materials have attracted extensive attention in the biomedical field as noncontact temperature monitoring devices with microscopic resolution due to their properties in the visible and near-infrared regions. At the application level, it is required to have a certain temperature monitoring capability in the near-infrared region II window to enhance the tissue penetration depth. Here, two kinds of YOFs: Er 3 + , Yb 3 + were prepared by co-precipitation and hydrothermal method, and the luminescence was enhanced by ion doping. An Er 3 + -based ratiometric nanothermometer of 4 F 9 ∕ 2 → 4 I 1 5 ∕ 2 (672 nm, upconversion luminescence) to 4 I 1 3 ∕ 2 → 4 I 1 5 ∕ 2 (1580 nm/1566 nm, NIR II downshifting luminescence) were designed with the Stark energy level. When doped with 2% Zn 2 + , the relative temperature sensitivity of YOF prepared by co-precipitation method was improved from 0.30% ∘ C − 1 (30 ∘ C) to 0.59% ∘ C − 1 (30 ∘ C), expanding its use as a temperature monitoring device possibility. The temperature sensitivity of YOF prepared by hydrothermal method was 1.01% ∘ C − 1 (30 ∘ C). Finally, the NIR II luminescence of the prepared nanothermometer was used as a control for temperature monitoring of heating sites in mice. The results showed that it can distinguish heating site from control site and no significant cytotoxicity or damage to the tissues was revealed, indicating its broad prospects in the biomedical field and other temperature monitoring scenarios in the future.

One-step construction of bifunctional nanoprobes for NIR afterglow and T2-weighted MR imaging

Yaqi Zhu,Jian Yang,Mingwei Wang,Yangqi Meng,Rongyun Jiang,Hancheng Zhu,Duanting Yan,Chunguang Liu,Changshan Xu,Yuxue Liu

In this study, spinel-phase Zn 2 Ga 3- x Fe 3+ x Ge 0.75 O 8 ( x  = 0, 0.002, 0.004, 0.02, 0.04, 0.08, 0.2) and Zn 2 Ga 2.98- x Fe 3+ x Cr 0.02 Ge 0.75 O 8 ( x  = 0, 0.0004, 0.001, 0.002 0.003, 0.004) nanoparticles were prepared by one-step hydrothermal method in combination with vacuum annealing. For ZGGO: Fe 3+ nanoparticles , the near infrared (NIR) emissions (∼725 nm) originate from the 4 T 1 ( 4 G)→ 6 A 1 ( 6 S) transition of Fe 3+ occupying octahedral and tetrahedral sites of Ga 3+ . Furthermore, their afterglow time is more than 15 min and Fe 3+ doping will influence the generation of antisite defects pair ( Ga Zn 0 − Zn Ga ′ GaZn0−ZnGa′ ). For Cr 3+ and Fe 3+ co-doped ZGGO nanoparticles with average size of ∼46 nm, the NIR persistent luminescence around ∼700 nm, originating from the 2 E→ 4 A 2 and 4 T 2 → 4 A 2 transitions of Cr 3+ , can be observed and the afterglow time exceeds 850 min. With the increase of Fe 3+ concentration, the afterglow intensity decreases due to the decreased number of ( Ga Zn 0 − Zn Ga ′ GaZn0−ZnGa′ ) defects and deeper traps. In particular, autofluorescence-free imaging and MR imaging were successfully realized by using ZGGO: Cr 3+ , Fe 3+ 0.002 nanoparticles dispersed in the simulated biological fluid environments (H 2 O, SLS and HSA). Their clear afterglow images can be acquired within 3 min after the stoppage of the UV irradiation and their transversal relaxivity (r 2 ) is in the range of 227–140 mM −1 s −1 , which is close to the conventional Feridex T 2 agent (108 mM −1 s −1 ). Our results suggest that ZGGO: Cr 3+ , Fe 3+ nanoprobes have potential applications in the diagnosis and therapy of disease.

An Intrinsic Photothermal Supramolecular Hydrogel with Robust Mechanical Strength and NIR-Responsive Shape Memory

Ruyue Wang,Xingxing Chen,Yilong Cheng,Zicheng Ding,Xiaoqing Ming,Yanfeng Zhang

Near-infrared (NIR)-triggered shape memory hydrogels with promising mechanical strength hold immense potential in the field of biomedical applications and soft actuators. However, the optical and mechanical properties of currently reported hydrogels usually suffer from limited solubility and dispersion of commonly used photothermal additives in hydrogels, thus restricting their practical implementations. Here,, a set of NIR-responsive shape memory hydrogels synthesized by polyaddition of diisocyanate-terminated poly(ethylene glycol), imidazolidinyl urea (IU), and p -benzoquinone dioxime (BQDO) is reported. The introduction of IU, a hydrogen bond reinforcing factor, significantly enhances the mechanical properties of the hydrogels, allowing for their tunable ranges of the ultimate tensile strength (0.4–2.5 MPa), elongation at break (210–450%), and Young's modulus (190–850 kPa). The unique hydrogels exhibit an intrinsic photothermal effect because of the covalently incorporated photothermal moiety (BQDO), and the photothermal supramolecular hydrogel shows controllable shape memory capabilities characterized by rapid recovery speed and high recovery ratio (>90%). This design provides new possibilities for applying shape memory hydrogels in the field of soft actuators.

NIR-responsive polydopamine nanosystem with on-demand release for dual antibacterial and catalytic performance

Guoyi Yan,Mengyu Li,Dongyan Yan,Kaibin Zhou,Jingbo Han,Jiaxin Yuan,Can Yang,Shuyi Yan,Yange Xing,Mengyao Luo,Ruoling Jia,Kaikai Wang,Mingyuan Wu

A NIR-responsive nanosystem enabled on-demand release of Ag + . • The synergistic PTT/Ag⁺ therapy enhanced antibacterial and antibiofilm performance. • The nanosystem demonstrated high catalytic performance toward organic pollutants. The bacterial resistance induced by antibiotic abuse and bacterial biofilm barriers has constituted a major challenge in the field of global public health. To address this issue, a near-infrared (NIR)-responsive polydopamine-functionalized silver nanoparticle (PDA@Ag) antibacterial system was developed to achieve dual-function antibacterial and catalytic performance. Under NIR irradiation, polydopamine exhibited excellent photothermal conversion performance, enabling direct antibacterial through a mild photothermal therapy (PTT) while simultaneously triggering the precisely controlled release of Ag⁺ via NIR-responsive, thus achieving synergistic PTT/Ag⁺ antibacterial activity. In vitro experimental results demonstrated that the system exhibited significant antibacterial efficacy against S. aureus (97.4%) and E. coli (98.6%), and effectively disrupted bacterial biofilms. Furthermore, the strong adhesion property of the polydopamine matrix effectively prevented the aggregation of Ag NPs, ensuring catalytic stability and endowing PDA@Ag with a high capability of reducing 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), with a reaction rate constant of 0.029 min⁻¹ . Given that the systemic in vivo safety requires further comprehensive evaluation, the current NIR-responsive intelligent on-demand release nanoplatform developed in this study is primarily suited for localized/superficial bacterial infection therapy. An Integrated dual-mode NIR Screening Device Forged by Spectrally Engineered Perovskite pc-LEDs

Li Qinghua,Gao Tianfu,Rao Xinhao,Ren Zhelei,Duan Haodi,Xie Xiaomin,Liao Jiaxin,Xue Shuwen,Xu Bin,Jin Xiao,Zhao Weifeng,Bai Jinke

Translating advanced luminescent materials into field-deployable screening tools remains a core challenge, demanding synergy between advanced optical materials and device engineering. Here, we demonstrate a portable dual-mode near-infrared semi-quantitative screening device. the luminescence performance of the core emitting materials, specifically lead-free Nd³⁺/Yb³⁺ co-doped Cs₂NaYCl₆ double perovskite phosphors, was first optimized through a machine-learning (ML) guided approach. Subsequently, these optimized phosphors were integrated to enable the device. Specifically, the Nd³⁺-doped emitter targets the 885 nm characteristic absorption band of alcohol while exhibiting anomalous thermal quenching, whereas the Nd³⁺/Yb³⁺ variant leverages 78.66% energy transfer efficiency to yield stable 985 nm emission (70% retention at 500 K) matching the characteristic absorption band of water. These optimized phosphor-converted LEDs were integrated into a compact detector featuring a coaxial dual-disc stepper mechanism and a customized three-stage circuit that amplifies faint optical signals into a five-level visual indicator. This configuration enables rapid screening of alcohol (30–60%) and water content (45–100%). Validated on commercial samples, this work establishes a holistic platform bridging high-precision instrumentation and real-world portability.

NIR-II Photoacoustic-Cavitation Boosted Metabolic Reprogramming Regulation Toward the Localized TNBC Growth Inhibition

Leilei Zhang,Haoheng Bai,Weiqi Sun,Luqi Wang,Minyan Duan,Qianying Liu,Chao Zhou,Xueyang Fang,Tao Zhang

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) treatment with traditional phototherapeutics generally suffers from short light penetration depth and limitations of the hypoxic tumor microenvironment. Developing effective therapeutic modalities tailored to TNBC’s features remains highly desirable yet challenging. Herein, we propose a near-infrared dual windows (NIR-II) photoacoustic (PA) cavitation-based strategy to amplify oxidative stress and induce metabolic disruption in TNBC cells, achieving effective tumor suppression. With a fabricated nanoagent (DTG), we integrated the oxygen-independent therapeutic effects of photomechanical damage, cavitation-promoted oxidative damage and glucose oxidase (GOx)-mediated glucose depletion. Specifically, under NIR-II pulsed laser (PL) irradiation, PA cavitation generates collapsing bubbles and shock waves, causing mechanical injury to tumor cells. Meanwhile, GOx depletes intratumoral glucose, blocking glycolysis, reducing adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production, and generating hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) that would be further converted into more toxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH) by the photocavitation to suppress the tumors effectively. In addition, the strong NIR-II PA signal produced from the DTG facilitates high-resolution deep-tissue imaging to provide precise therapeutic guidance. Thus, these findings establish the multimodal strategy as a potent candidate for TNBC management.

Decoding Balanced High-Performance in Fe3+ NIR Phosphors via Site-Selectivity for Versatile Applications

Peng Wang,Anfei Chen,Mekhrdod S. Kurboniyon,Dilshod Nematov,Bibo Lou,Rongxin Tang,Qi Wang,Dan Zhang,Qiaoling Chen,Chong-Geng Ma

The development of efficient and stable near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted LEDs has significantly advanced NIR photonics. However, widely reported Cr3+-activated NIR luminescent materials remain limited in performance and fail to satisfy the increasing demands of diverse applications. Herein, a Cr-free alternative utilizing a rigid garnet host is proposed. Through the design and synthesis of a novel Fe3+-activated phosphor, Ca3Sn2Ga2SiO12:Fe3+ (CSGS: Fe3+), efficient broadband NIR emission centered at 770 nm and spanning 600–1100 nm is successfully realized. This material achieves an internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 62.38% and an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 46.56%, while maintaining 62% of its emission intensity at 423 K. Its overall balanced performance exceeds that of most reported Fe3+-based systems. Supported by first-principles calculations, this study systematically clarifies the electronic structure, mechanical properties, site preference, and valence stability of Fe3+, elucidates the excited-state transition behavior, and proposes a crystal-field-induced site-selective luminescence mechanism. This work not only presents a high-performance Fe3+-activated NIR phosphor, but also provides theoretical insights and practical guidance for material design and optimization in solid-state lighting, nondestructive testing, and spectral analysis.

Boosting Hydrogenation via NIR-Light-Controlled Metal-Support Interactions over Structurally Modulated Ru/TiO2

Jingyao Fan,Xiaoyan Yin,Yujie Hao,Bo Cai,Yang Lv,Zechang Wei,Dalei Wang,Hong Lei,Jianchun Jiang,Kui Wang

Abstract The modulation of metal–support interaction (MSI) could provide exciting catalytic performance for the heterogeneous catalyst. Herein, we report a novel and fast strategy to controllably modulate the physicochemical structure of supports through NIR laser irradiation and then reconstruct the interface between the metal site and support. The abundant oxygen vacancies, tunable anatase-rutile phases, and unique surface properties of TiO2 supports can be formed by laser irradiation in 3 s. It is worth mentioning that the structure and properties of TiO2 supports can be controllably modulated by controlling the intensity of laser irradiation, thereby tuning the MSI between active Ru sites and TiO2 supports to promote the catalytic performance of Ru/TiO2 catalysts. Specifically, the optimized interfacial activity of the Ru/TiO2 catalyst would exhibit excellent electron/mass transfer, which facilitates the adsorption and activation of H-donor (alcohols) and ethyl levulinate (EL), thereby improving the EL catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) to γ-valerolactone (GVL), achieving 95% GVL yield, 96% EL conversion, and 99.0% GVL selectivity under mild conditions (150 °C, 12 h, 2-PrOH as H-donor). This research provides an innovative approach for fast modulation of support to tune the MSI, thus enhancing the catalytic activity of catalysts.

Active and Remote Visual-Tactile Human-Machine Interface Based on Self-Recoverable NIR Mechanoluminescence

Xiaohui Zhao,Zhenwei Jia,Pinshu Lv,Jianpeng Li,Shiwei Lu,Tianyu Dai,Yuchen Zhang,Xu Wu,Yi Zhang,Li Wu,Jingjun Xu

Visual-tactile sensing offers a powerful strategy for high-resolution force detection in human-machine interfaces (HMIs), yet its deployment in space-constrained environments is often hindered by requirements for auxiliary illumination and complex electronics. The active and remote sensing modalities using mechanoluminescence (ML) materials offer an effective solution, though the realization of a self-recoverable, deep-tissue-penetrating system remains a challenge. Here, we report an active and remote visual-tactile HMI based on Ca 5 Ga 6 O 14 :Nd 3+ , a self-recoverable near-infrared (NIR) ML material. We identify piezoelectricity as the key factor driving the self-recovery process, which, combined with the intense NIR emission, enables the operation without external power or pre-irradiation. These intrinsic properties facilitate exceptional performance, including centimeter-scale deep-tissue penetration, high cyclic stability, and long-term durability. We further demonstrate an HMI-driven control system that effectively transduces biomechanical forces into real-time, multi-directional vehicle driving commands. By bridging the gap between material fabrication and system design, this work establishes a versatile paradigm for non-invasive, active visual-tactile perception in next-generation HMIs and assistive technologies.

Efficient radical generator with NIR emission by donor modulation for mitochondria-targeted photodynamic therapy

Lixin Ma,Yingcui Bu,Mingdi Yang,Yuxin Yang,Guiyan Xu,Ting Wang,Jing Huang,Hongping Zhou

Development of NIR type I photosensitizers (PSs) that can specifically target subcellular organelles remains a significant challenge in photodynamic therapy (PDT). In this work, two D–π–A PSs named TPE-IN and TPA-IN were constructed via the strategy of changing donors. In detail, replacing donor group tetraphenylethylene ( TPE-IN ) with triphenylamine ( TPA-IN ) could extend the emission wavelength of PSs into the NIR-I region. Meanwhile, the singlet-triplet energy gap (Δ E ST  = 0.53 eV) of PSs was also narrowed, which efficiently promoted the production of superoxide anion radical (O 2 − ) and hydroxyl radical ( OH), especially for TPA-IN . Further mechanistic studies demonstrated that the generation of OH mainly relied on the cascaded electron-transfer process mediated by the Haber-Weiss reaction (O 2 −  → H 2 O 2  →  OH). More importantly, TPA-IN could specifically accumulate in mitochondria through electrostatic interactions ( Pr  = 0.81), which could decrease mitochondrial membrane potential, inducing cell late apoptosis (95.8 %) upon light exposure. This study established innovative theoretical and technological groundwork for designing high-efficiency, precision-targeted optical theranostic agents aimed at eliminating cancer cells.

NIR-responsive cisplatin nanoparticles for synergistic chemo-photothermal therapy of oral squamous cell carcinoma

Danrui Liu,Wenquan Wang,Yongjun Li,Suai Lin,Qingkun Jiang,Ruiyang Zou,Jiaxuan Qiu

The typically occurring malignant tumor in the head and neck is oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), which is highly aggressive and invasive. Despite surgical advancements, radiation, and chemotherapy, the prognosis for OSCC is still poor. Chemotherapy's effectiveness is frequently restricted by its serious side effects and the development of resistance. In this study, a cisplatin (CDDP)-loaded magnetic targeting nanoplatform (CDDP@PPy@Fe3O4) has been designed for synergistic chemo-photothermal therapy. PPy with carboxyl groups was first prepared by chemical oxidative polymerization. Then, Fe3O4 nanoparticles were synthesized in situ on its surface and loaded with CDDP through a reaction with the carboxyl groups. The CDDP@PPy@Fe3O4 nanocomposite serves not only as a nanocarrier for the targeted delivery of CDDP to alleviate the systemic toxicity of chemotherapy but also possesses excellent photothermal conversion properties, generating localized heat upon near-infrared laser irradiation that enables photothermal therapy. Contrary to using only chemotherapy or photothermal therapy, CDDP@PPy@Fe3O4 nanoparticles combined with NIR exposure exert superior anticancer effects against OSCC both in vivo and in vitro while exhibiting minimal side effects. Therefore, CDDP@PPy@Fe3O4 nanoparticles could be a promising candidate for nanomedicine in OSCC combination therapy.
