The fabrication of high-performance gas-sensitive materials with enhanced moisture resistance is an important research topic. In this work, monodisperse Y-type CoO hierarchical nanostructures with a branch length of about 16 nm have been prepared, and then uniformly dispersed on the surface of reduced oxide graphene (rGO) by hot injection method. The composite exhibited a rapid response to NO 2 at room temperature. The optimal response was about 40–100 ppm NO 2 , the response time was 620 s to 10 ppm NO 2 and the detection limit was 0.01 ppm. It was due to the combination of more NO 2 adsorption active sites of Y-type CoO and faster carrier transfer of rGO. Even at high relative humidity (RH) conditions of 80%, the sensor still retained a high response value of about 90% of that measured at the normal RH (25%). The effective wrapping of stearate ligands inhibited the entrance of water vapor molecules, which could effectively improve the hydrophobic properties of the composite and resulted in enhanced moisture resistance. It may provide a new path for improved NO 2 detection with enhanced moisture resistance at room temperature.

Two-dimensional tin sulfide (SnS 2 ) shows great promise as a NO 2 gas-sensing material due to its large specific surface area and suitable band structure, yet its selectivity and detection limit remain inadequate. Herein, PdS/SnS 2 composite with PdS nanoparticle inlaid in lettuce-like structure SnS 2 was synthesized via a facile microwave-assisted method for room-temperature NO 2 detection. The optimized PdS/SnS 2 composite exhibits that the response value to 5 ppm NO 2 reached 2560% at room temperature under 50% relative humidity, which is approximately 10.7 times that of pristine SnS 2 (238%). Importantly, its experimental limit of detection (LOD) for NO 2 is as low as 800 ppt, while the theoretical LOD is below 164 ppt. Furthermore, it also shows outstanding reversibility and repeatability (RSD < 5%), and high selectivity (response ratio > 40) against interfering gases. The enhanced sensing performance is attributed to the synergistic effect of the PdS/SnS 2 heterojunction and sulfur vacancies, which promotes NO 2 gas adsorption on the material surface and electron transport inside the material. This study provides a feasible strategy for designing high-precision and ultra-trace NO 2 sensors with ppt-level detection capabilities at room temperature.

The limited stability and insufficient reactivity of small molecules toward NO 2 limit their ability to suppress the autocatalytic degradation of nitrocellulose (NC) under harsh conditions. The integration of rigid planar with twisted Tröger's base (TB) yields a thermally stable polymer designed for dual function: inherent microporosity enables rapid NO 2 physisorption, while abundant N-sites facilitate stable in-situ chemisorption at elevated temperatures. Among them, the biphenyl-based Tröger's base (BTA-TB) exhibits excellent NO 2 uptake (BTA-TB, 909.81 m 2 g −1 , 3.06 mmol g −1 ). With 3% BTA-TB, it reduces NO 2 release by 63.4 % in titration tests and extends the methyl violet color-change time by a factor of 2.35, outperforming pyrene-based TB (PTA-TB, 1120.51 m 2 g −1 , 2.99 mmol g −1 ) and Tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)-1,4-benzenediamine TB (TABA-TB, 28.25 m 2 g −1 , 2.74 mmol g −1 ). Characterization and calculations revealed that NO 2 preferentially fixes adjacent to the aromatic ring's tertiary amine. BTA-TB's high performance is attributed to its microporous structure, large surface area, reduced π-conjugation, and lower activation energy. These findings establish a design strategy for materials that simultaneously achieve physical adsorption and stable chemical immobilization of NO 2 and other gases.

A sulfur vacancy-rich PdS/MoS 2 hierarchical heterostructures were synthesized via in-situ microwave-assisted method. • A dual-sensitization mechanism of synergistic enhancement of sulfur vacancy and heterojunction was proposed. • A mobile monitoring system is developed for on-site NO 2 tracking, enabling excessive NO 2 concentration warning. Developing high-selectivity and high-sensitivity nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) gas sensors, and explaining the complex underlying sensitization mechanisms remain critical challenges. Herein, we propose a dual-sensitization mechanism of synergistic enhancement of sulfur vacancy and heterojunction at composite interface to develop a high-performance NO 2 gas sensor at room temperature. A novel sulfur vacancy-rich palladium sulfide (PdS) nanocluster is synthesized via a microwave-assisted method, and it is further in situ decorated on molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanoflowers to construct hierarchical heterostructure. The high selectivity of PdS/MoS 2 gas sensor is verified via experiment and density functional theory calculation. The PdS/MoS 2 composite system shows the highest adsorption energy (−1.89 eV) to NO 2 among various interfering gases, which further decreases to −2.11 eV after introducing sulfur vacancies. Meanwhile, the proposed dual-sensitization mechanism is based on “targeted electron-reflux” effect resulting from the synergistic action of sulfur vacancies and the p-p heterojunction, which modulates the interfacial carrier migration behaviors. Furthermore, a mobile NO 2 monitoring system is developed for on-site NO 2 tracking, which is equipped with the PdS/MoS 2 gas sensor, universal serial bus module, and smart phone, enabling real-time monitoring and excessive NO 2 concentration warning. This work proposes a research approach for complicated gas sensing mechanism, and provides an avenue for portable and intelligent gas detection. In complex practical environments, gas sensors with exceptional anti-interference capabilities are highly desirable. Nevertheless, developing metal oxide-based NO 2 gas sensors that maintain excellent humidity resistance at relatively low temperatures remains a significant challenge. In this work, Metal-organic framework-derived In 2 O 3 @MoS 2 heterojunctions were successfully fabricated, which demonstrate remarkable NO 2 sensing performance characterized by low operating temperature, high selectivity, and outstanding humidity tolerance. Significantly, at near room temperature, the sensor demonstrates negligible response fluctuation of only 1.03 % to 10 ppm NO 2 across a wide relative humidity (RH) range of 15 %-85 %. Even at 65 % RH conditions, it still achieves a low detection limitation of 50 ppb. Further analysis reveals that edge-terminated unsaturated sulfur (S) atoms are the key factor for the enhanced sensing performance. Both porous strueture and enhanced charge transfer are also conducive to the enhancement. These findings highlight the potential of In 2 O 3 @MoS 2 -based gas sensor as promising candidates for reliable NO 2 detection in high-humidity environments.

Ever-increasing concerns over air quality and the newly emerged internet of things (IoT) for future environmental monitoring are stimulating the development of ultrasensitive room-temperature gas sensors, especially for nitrogen dioxide (NO2), one of the most harmful air pollution species released round-the-clock from power plants and vehicle exhausts. Herein, tin dioxide nanorods/ethylenediamine-modified reduced graphene oxide (SnO2/EDA-rGO) heterojunctions with selective adsorption and electronic structure modulation were engineered for highly sensitive and selective detection of NO2 at room temperature. The modified EDA groups not only enable selective adsorption to significantly enrich NO2 molecules around the interface but also realize a favorable modulation of SnO2/EDA-rGO electronic structure by increasing the Fermi level of rGO, through which the sensing performance of NO2 is synergistically enhanced. The response of the SnO2/EDA-rGO sensor toward 1 ppm NO2 reaches 282%, which exceeds the corresponding SnO2/rGO sensor by a factor of 2.8. It also exhibits a low detection limit down to 100 ppb, enhanced selectivity, and rapid response/recovery kinetics. This approach to designing a novel heterojunction with significantly enhanced chemical and electric effects may shed light on the future engineering of gas-sensing materials.

The substantial presence of nitrogen oxides (NO and NO 2 ) in outdoor environments detrimentally impacts natural ecosystems and exerts significant influence on urban climates. Conventional NO x treatment methods frequently suffer from challenges such as harsh reaction conditions and high energy consumption. Consequently, the development of advanced photocatalytic systems to efficiently degrade NO x while minimizing the formation of toxic byproducts represents a critical challenge in environmental catalysis. In this study, a novel ternary composite material (5% Mo-CN/InP-NBOC) was constructed via hydrothermal synthesis and surface modification strategies, achieving 42% NO oxidation efficiency under visible light irradiation with a mere 0.9% NO 2 generation rate. This performance demonstrates efficient photocatalytic NO oxidation while effectively suppressing NO 2 production. Systematic characterization techniques, including XRD, TEM, and XPS, confirmed the successful integration of InP quantum dots (5–10 nm) and amorphous Mo-CN onto NBOC nanosheets, forming an intimate heterojunction structure. PL and ESR analyses revealed that Mo-CN enhances charge carrier separation and governs the NO oxidation process through the activation of dual free radical pathways (⋅O 2 − and ⋅OH). This work establishes a “quantum dot-primary catalyst-cocatalyst” ternary collaborative design paradigm, providing experimental evidence and theoretical models to address the challenges of synergistic optimization among activity, selectivity, and stability in photocatalytic NO x treatment.

The use of NO 2 sensors is a significant measure for reducing NO 2 emissions from industrial plants and vehicles. The performance of these devices considerably depends on the morphology of sensing electrodes, which in turn is directly influenced by the particle size of the raw powder used for gas detection. In this study, the particle size distribution (PSD) of LaCrO 3 powder was optimized through adjustments to calcination temperature, and the influence of such optimization on the morphology of sensing electrodes was considered in the examination of sensing performance. The results indicated that the sensor (S300) fabricated with the optimally calcined powder exhibited the best performance, achieving a high sensitivity of 52.52 mV/decade and a low limit of detection of 16.5 ppb—advantages stemming from the optimized gas diffusion pathways and triple phase boundaries (TPBs) in the sensing electrodes. The sensor also exhibits excellent selectivity, repeatability, and long-term stability. Overall, the PSD-oriented method developed in this research serves as an effective strategy for designing mixed-potential sensors, showing promising applications in high-temperature exhaust gas monitoring.

In this work, a magnetic covalent organic framework (COF) named Fe 3 O 4 @TpPa-NO 2 was designed and synthesized by a solvothermal method employing 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and 2-nitro-p-phenylenediamine (Pa-NO 2 ) as the organic units. Fe 3 O 4 @TpPa-NO 2 was explored as an adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of four pyrethroid insecticides. Fe 3 O 4 @TpPa-NO 2 displayed excellent adsorption capacity in the adsorption test of pyrethroid insecticides. Taking bifenthrin as an example, the adsorption capacity reached 885 mg·g −1 . A sensitive method for the determination of pyrethroid pesticide residues was developed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with MSPE. The linearity of the proposed method has a correlation coefficient ( R 2 ) of 0.9992–0.9999 in the range of 15–1000 ng·mL −1 . Under optimal conditions, the limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) were 3.98–6.21 and 13.28–22.05 ng·mL −1 , respectively. Furthermore, satisfactory precision and accuracy were obtained with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 2.58–3.42% and recoveries of 85.7–109.8%. The adsorption mechanism inferred that π-π interactions, hydrophobic interactions, and hydrogen bonding could promote the adsorption of pyrethroids. The developed MSPE-HPLC method has the advantages of rapidity, accuracy, sensitivity, recyclability, and good practical applicability.

Very diverse two-dimensional (2D) materials have bloomed in NO2 gas sensing applications, which provides new opportunities and challenges in function oriented gas sensors. In this work, a 2D/2D/2D structure of the Ti3C2Tx@TiO2@MoS2 composite was well designed via a facile one-step hydrothermal route, in which TiO2 nanosheets are in situ grown on ultrathin and highly conductive Ti3C2Tx MXene. Simultaneously, the few-layer and vertically oriented MoS2 nanoflakes rich in active edge-sites were uniformly distributed in the composite. Ti3C2Tx MXene and MoS2 act respectively as the electron reservoir and main sensitive material. The strong interfacial contact in different components facilitated the transfer of charge carriers and their spatial separation. Integrating the unique structural and electronic properties, the as-prepared Ti3C2Tx@TiO2@MoS2 sensor exhibited a remarkable gas sensing performance at room temperature (Ra/Rg = 55.16, 50 ppm NO2), which is 7.3, 3.8 and 2.1 times higher than that of pristine MoS2, TiO2@MoS2 and Ti3C2Tx@MoS2 composites, respectively. It also achieved ultrafast response time (1.8 s), more than 90% recoverability, low detection limit (23 ppb), dedicated selectivity and as long as eight-week stability.

Considering the harmfulness of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), it is important to develop NO2 sensors with high responses and low limits of detection. In this study, we synthesize a novel SnO–Sn3O4 heterostructure through a one-step solvothermal method, which is used for the first time as an NO2 sensor. The material exhibits three-dimensional flower-like microparticles assembled by two-dimensional nanosheets, in situ-formed SnO–Sn3O4 heterostructures, and large specific surface area. Gas sensing measurements show that the responses of the SnO–Sn3O4 heterostructure to 500 ppb NO2 are as high as 657.4 and 63.4 while its limits of detection are as low as 2.5 and 10 parts per billion at 75 °C and ambient temperature, respectively. In addition, the SnO–Sn3O4 heterostructure has an excellent selectivity to NO2, even if exposed to mixture gases containing interferential part with high concentration. The superior sensing properties can be attributed to the in situ formation of SnO–Sn3O4 p–n heterojunctions and large specific surface area. Therefore, the SnO–Sn3O4 heterostructure having excellent NO2 sensing performances is very promising for applications as an NO2 sensor or alarm operated at a low operating temperature.

As an n-type metal oxide semiconductor (MOS), vanadium pentoxide (V 2 O 5 ) has shown great potential in gas sensing, especially for the detection of NO 2 . Herein, a highly sensitive NO 2 sensor based on 3D porous V 2 O 5 microrods (MRs) derived from metal organic frameworks (MOFs) was reported. The porous structure of vanadium-based MOF-derivatives (MIL-47) was tuned by the control of annealing temperature (300 °C–600 °C) in the pyrolysis process . The gas sensors with the MOF-derivatives are exposed to NO 2 at 150 ℃ for gas sensing tests. The sensor with MOF-derivatives annealed at 500 °C (MIL-47–500) showed the highest response (527 %) to 50 ppm NO 2 . It also showed excellent selectivity, low limit of detection, and good repeatability. The NO 2 -sensing behaviors of the MIL-47–500 sensor under ultraviolet (UV) illumination have also been investigated. Under UV illumination, the response of the MIL-47–500 sensor increased to 706 %. At 75 °C, the response of the MIL-47–500 sensor toward 50 ppm NO 2 was significantly improved from 57 % to 538 % under UV illumination. The response/recovery times were reduced from 102 s/300–48 s/178 s. The excellent performance was attributed to the unique porous structure of MIL-47–500 and the UV light excited charge carriers.
