The advancement of large-scale and environmentally-friendly solid-state synthesis methods is of paramount importance for the production of precipitated catalysts, notably Fe-based catalysts utilized in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). In this study, we present an innovative solvent-independent, wastewater-free solid-state approach for the synthesis of highly efficient Fe/ZrO 2 catalysts, elucidating the mechanisms of promotion within this specific methodology. The prepared catalysts underwent rigorous evaluation under industrially-relevant FTS conditions (230–270 °C, 20 bar, and WHSV = 5400 mL/(g cat ⋅h)). A comprehensive suite of characterization techniques was employed to establish the intricate interplay between catalytic activity and structural attributes. We meticulously examined the impact of Na as an alkali promoter and the role of transition metals (Cu and Mn) in enhancing FTS catalytic performance. The catalytic outcomes obtained clearly demonstrate the pivotal role of the synergistic interaction between Mn and Na within the Na-Mn-Fe/ZrO 2 catalyst system in driving the FTS reaction. This synergism significantly enhances FTS performance, yielding an impressive CO conversion rate (89.91 %) while maintaining low selectivity to CH 4 (7.75 %). The incorporation of Mn and Na into the catalyst matrix enhances the dispersion of Fe 2 O 3 , thereby improving the reducibility of Mn/Fe oxides and elevating the electron density on the catalyst surface. These factors facilitate the formation of active Hägg iron carbide (χ-Fe 5 C 2 ), stimulating chain propagation and ultimately leading to the generation of valuable C 5+ hydrocarbon products, which underscores its potential as an optimal candidate for future industrial applications in Fe-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.

Fluorophosphate Na3V2(PO4)2F3 (NVPF) is considered a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries, while its specific capacity is still insufficient compared to that of cathodes of lithium-ion batteries. Activating the third Na+ effectively increases the specific capacity of NVPF. However, the accompanied irreversible phase transition deteriorates the cycling stability. In this study, we synthesized sodium-rich Na3.5V1.5Mg0.5(PO4)2F3 (NVMPF) through doping low-valence Mg2+ with a high content, which introduces an extra 0.5 Na+ in the crystal lattice. The extra 0.5 Na+ remains in the lattice of NVMPF, acting as “pillars” to suppress the irreversible phase transition after the third Na+ is extracted by activating the V5+/4+ redox couple at a high voltage. Thus, NVMPF achieves a specific discharge capacity of 170 mAh g–1 between 1.0 and 4.7 V while maintaining the tetragonal structure of NVMPF. This work offers insightful guidelines to achieve the full utilization of three Na+ with enhanced cycling stability.

Niobium-based phosphates have the advantages of high stability and environmental protection and have good application prospects in sodium-ion batteries. The pure phase of Na(NbO 2 ) 2 PO 4 (NNP) powder was successfully synthesized by different methods in this work, and the materials were characterized via XRD, XPS, SEM, and electrochemical methods. At the current density of 100 mA g −1 , the discharge-specific capacity of NNP is 521.8 mAh g −1 in the first cycle and remains at 462.4 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles, indicating that it has good cycling stability. The kinetic results obtained from cyclic voltammetry (CV) show the pseudo-capacitance contribution accounts for a large percentage of the capacity. The charge transfer resistance of NNP is 260.3 Ω, which is significantly smaller than the others derived from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). These pointed to the advantages of NNP in anode material for SIBs.

The performance of lithium and sodium-ion batteries is partly determined by the microstructures of the active materials and anodes. Much attention has been paid to the construction of various nanostructured active materials, with emphasis on optimizing the electronic and ionic transport kinetics, and structural stability. However, less attention has been given to the functionalization of electrode microstructure to enhance performance. Therefore, it is significant to study the effect of optimized microstructures of both active materials and electrodes on the performance of batteries. In this work, porous MoS 2 /carbon spheres anchored on 3D interconnected multiwall carbon nanotube networks (MoS 2 /C-MWCNT) are built as sodium-ion battery anodes to synergistically facilitate the sodium-ion storage process. The optimized MoS 2 /C-MWCNT possesses favorable features, namely few-layered, defect-rich, and interlayer-expanded MoS 2 with abundant mesopores/macropores and carbon incorporation. Notably, the presence of 3D MWCNT network plays a critical role to further improve interparticle and intraparticle conductivity, sodium-ion diffusion, and structural stability on the electrode level. As a result, the electrochemical performance of optimized MoS 2 /C-MWCNT is significantly improved. This study suggests that rational design of microstructures on both active material and electrode levels simultaneously might be a useful strategy for designing high performance sodium-ion batteries.

Element doping has been demonstrated as a useful strategy to regulate the band gap and electronic structure of photocatalyst for improving photocatalytic activity. Herein, ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) nanosheets were doped with alkali metal ions (Li + , Na + or K + ) by a simple solution method. Experimental characterizations reveal that alkali metal ions doping reduce the band gap, raise the conduction band position, and improve surface hydrophilicity of ZIS. In addition, theoretical calculations show that Na doping increases the electron density at valence band maximum and surrounding S atom, which is conducive to produce more electrons and effective utilization of electrons, respectively. Benefited from above factors, Na-doped ZIS (Na-ZIS) shows the highest photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. Furthermore, CoSe 2 cocatalyst is loaded on the surface of Na-ZIS (CS/Na-ZIS), which further improve the charge separation and prolong the lifetime of charges. As a result, the optimized CS/Na-ZIS shows a H 2 evolution rate of 4525 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 with an apparent quantum efficiency of 27.5 % at 420 nm, which are much higher than that of pure ZIS. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the synergistic effect of Na doping and CoSe 2 cocatalyst in ameliorating photocatalytic activity.

Tin (Sn) has been recognized as a viable anode material for sodium-ion batteries due to its non-toxic nature, affordability, and high specific capacity. Nonetheless, Sn experiences substantial volume changes during charge–discharge processes, which results in accelerated capacity degradation. Herein, a novel solvothermal method is developed to synthesize a composite of tin nanoparticles covalently bonded to nitrogen-doped three-dimensional graphene (Sn/3DNG) through stable C-Sn bonds. The design of the Sn/3DNG composite effectively mitigates the volume changes of tin during sodium insertion/extraction process by using the robust framework of 3DNG to confine and support Sn nanoparticles. The presence of C-Sn bonds prevents the tin nanoparticles from clumping together, thereby enhancing the electrode’s durability. Owing to these improvements, the Sn/3DNG anode exhibits a cyclic retention of 87.7 % after 800 cycles and maintains a substantial specific capacity of 350 mAh g -1 at 5 A g -1 . This advancement underscores the potential of Sn-based nanocomposites in advancing the next generation of rechargeable batteries.

Employing appropriate single-atom (SA) catalysts in room-temperature sodium-sulfur (Na-S) batteries is propitious to promote the performance, whereas a universal designing strategy for the highly-efficient single-atom catalysts is absent. In this work, we adopt natural language processing techniques to screen the potential single-atom catalysts, then a binary descriptor is constructed to optimize the catalyst candidates. Atomically dispersed cobalt anchored to both nitrogen and sulfur atoms (SA Co-N/S) is selected as an ideal catalyst to significantly facilitate sulfur reduction reaction. The sulfur cathode catalyzed with SA Co-N/S almost realizes complete transformation, and the corresponding pouch cell exhibits satisfactory performance with high mass loading. In-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals the dynamical interactions between SA Co-N/S and sulfur species in the sulfur reduction reaction. Our work provides a method to select the preferable SA catalyst and to understand the interfacial catalysis dynamics in the sustainable Na-S systems.

The stable phase equilibrium of the reciprocal quaternary system of Na+, K+//VO3–, Cl––H2O at 298.15 K was investigated by an isothermal solution equilibrium method. The equilibrium liquid phase solubility data and physical property data [density (ρ), refractive index (nD), and pH] were determined, and the composition of the equilibrium solid phase was verified by X-ray diffraction. The phase diagram and physical property–composition diagrams were constructed based on the equilibrium solubility data and physical property data. The phase diagram contains three invariant points, seven isothermal univariant curves, and five crystalline phase regions. The study found that this quaternary system belongs to a complex system with the presence of the double salts. By comparing the experimental results with literature data, it was confirmed that at 298.15 K, the chemical formulas of the complex salt which formed by the quaternary system Na+, K+//VO3–, Cl––H2O were consistent with the complex salt chemical formula (Na2mKn(VO3)2m+n) proposed by the Druzynski group, thus verifying the reliability of this experiment. The results of this study will provide new experimental data for the thermodynamics of vanadium–water systems.

Hard carbon (HC) is the most promising anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), nevertheless, the understanding of sodium storage mechanism in HC is very limited. As an important aspect of storage mechanism, the steady state of sodium stored in HC has not been revealed clearly to date. Herein, the formation mechanism of quasi-metallic sodium and the quasi-ionic bond between sodium and carbon within the electrochemical reaction on the basis of theoretical calculations are disclosed. The presence of quasi-metallic sodium is further confirmed with the assistance of a specific reaction between the sodiated HC electrode and ethanol, by analyzing the reaction products with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, gas chromatography, and nuclear magnetic resonance. Moreover, based on the specific chemical reaction, the composition of fully sodiated HC is estimated to be NaC 6.7 , and the corresponding capacity of sucrose-derived HC is calculated to be 333.4 mAh g −1 in SIBs, matching well with the experimental result. This work helps to reveal the steady state of sodium and improve the understanding of sodium storage behavior in HC from the aspect of charge transfer. In addition, the proposed method is also expected to pave the way to investigate sodium storage mechanisms in other electrode systems.

Liquid metal batteries (LMBs) with Na anode exhibit the advantages of low-cost, high-safety, long-lifespan, and easy scale-up, making them promising for large-scale energy storage applications. However, the high solubility of Na and its sluggish kinetics in discharge products result in severe self-discharge and low cathode utilization, significantly hindering the development of Na-based LMBs. In this study, a stable Na-Li dual cation LMB with metal Sb cathode is designed based on the in-situ displacement reaction between Na and molten salts of lithium halides electrolyte. This design effectively suppresses the self-discharge of the battery, and the multistage discharge mechanism of the dual-cation system enhances cathode utilization. Moreover, the self-healing property of the Sb cathode protects the electrode against volume expansion and degradation, enhancing cycling performance. The Na-Li| LiCl-KCl-NaCl |Sb cell was constructed and operated at 485 °C. The battery retained 97.02 % of its capacity after 800 cycles at 0.6 C, with a decay rate of 0.00373 % per cycle. Furthermore, the battery achieves a cathode material utilization of 89 % at 0.6 C. These improvements effectively promote the development and application of LMBs.

According to the principle of polymer science, the gelation process of κ-carrageenan should start with polymer chains in a disordered coil conformation. However, the coil-helix model has been challenged by recent studies, which pointed out that in deionized water, κ-carrageenan exists in single-helix conformation rather than random coil. Here, we employ single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS) to investigate its conformation under different conditions at the single-chain level. Direct evidence for the existence of random coil state is obtained. In addition, it is found that coil-single helix transition can be induced by external Na + ions, which can screen the charges of the sulfated groups in κ-carrageenan. Thus, the mechanism of the first step of κ-carrageenan gelation is revealed, which lays a solid foundation for better understanding of the entire gelation process.

Na-ion batteries (NIBs) are emerging as a promising alternative to Li-ion batteries (LIBs). To align with sustainability principles, the design of electrode materials must incorporate considerations for abundant and environmentally friendly elements, such as redox-active Fe. Despite its appeal, the enduring challenge of Fe migration in layered cathodes remains inadequately addressed over decades. Here, we propose a “seat-squatting” strategy via Li-substitution to fundamentally suppress Fe migration. Li is strategically introduced to migrate first, occupying available migration sites without inducing structural damage and effectively raising the activation energy for Fe migration. Experimental and theoretical validation using O3-Na0.83Li0.17Fe0.33Mn0.5O2 (NaLFM) demonstrates a robust suppression of irreversible Fe migration. As a result, the NaLFM cathode delivers enhanced structural and electrochemical cycling stability. This work illustrates a compelling strategy to curb irreversible Fe migration in NIBs, offering a pathway for the development of stable and cost-effective layered oxides based on Fe redox centers.
