Investigation on [OH−]-responsive systems for construction of one-dimensional hydroxyapatite via a solvothermal method

Yin-chuan Wang,Zi-chen Wang,Gui-yong Xiao,Wei-li Xu,Kai Wang,Yan Jiao,Mei-li Qi,Yu-peng Lu

An oleic acid-assisted solvothermal method has been utilized to prepare hydroxyapatite (HA) nanofibers with a high flexibility and aspect ratio. Understanding the role of oleic acid in the synthesis of HA may provide effective routes for the design of advanced biomaterials. The concentration of OH− ions ([OH−]) has a great impact on the reaction system, which in turn affects the nucleation and crystal growth of HA. In this work, the effect of oleic acid on the morphology and structure of the as-prepared products under different concentrations of NaOH was investigated by XRD, FTIR and FE-SEM. The formation process of HA was also explored to better explain the role of oleic acid based on structured characteristics and morphology evolution. These results showed that oleic acid molecules absorbed on the surface of HA would effectively induce a one-dimensional crystal growth, even if the crystal growth habit had been changed under different [OH−]. For [OH−] < 1.50 M, [OH−]-responsive oleic acid and its corresponding behavior as a pH buffer can regulate pH at a relatively constant value. Besides, the flexible ultralong HA nanofibers can be formed at [OH−] = 1.25–1.50 M, while the crystallite size and preferred growth along the c-axis were both improved with an increase in [OH−] added.

Highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution driven by adjustable bimetal CuNi derived hexagonal Ni(OH)2

Lingjiao Li,Jing Xu,Binyi Su

In the field of photocatalysis, most of the photocatalysts are semiconductors. Recent years, there have been many photocatalytic systems related to non-semiconductor catalysts. In this paper, a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution system of hexagonal Ni(OH) 2 derived from CuNi bimetal is obtained by classical hydrothermal method. The derived hexagonal Ni(OH) 2 can promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and greatly improve the effect of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The electron-hole pair comes from the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Cu from CuNi composite. It is worth noting that photoluminescence spectra and photoelectrochemical experiments have confirmed that the CuNi-5 complex can effectively improve space charge separation. The results of linear scanning voltammetry show that the material has high current response characteristics. This system gives a practical solution for planning and synthesizing non-semiconductor catalysts with high photocatalytic activity.

Morphology engineering of ZnO nanostructures for enhanced photocatalytic efficiency of In(OH)3/ZnO nanocomposite

Yinli Duan,Jing Ma,Jianan Dai,Liangsheng Qiang,Juanqin Xue

Very efficient and low-cost photocatalysts containing Indium hydroxide (In(OH) 3 ) anchored on zinc oxide (ZnO) with various morphologies (e.g., hexagonal, pyramids, elliptic, etc.) were synthesized using a hydrothermal approach. The strong interaction between In(OH) 3 and ZnO was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N 2 adsorption-desorption, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In(OH) 3 particles grew directly on the ZnO surface and strongly interacted with it, which contributed to the excellent photocatalytic performance of ZnO. A possible formation mechanism of the In(OH) 3 /ZnO nanostructures was proposed. Experiments on photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) showed that the photocatalytic activity of the In(OH) 3 /ZnO nanocomposites correlated with the material morphology. The highest MB removal efficiency by the In(OH) 3 /ZnO hybrid photocatalysts was 90.5% after 120 min exposure to the visible light. The significant improvement of photocatalytic activity of In(OH) 3 /ZnO hybrid can be attributed to their special structural features, which allowed for an extended spectral response as well as for enhanced separation of photogenerated charge carriers. The design principles of this hybrid material apply to other metal-oxide systems to widen variety of advanced material systems with multifunctional properties useful for sensing and other advanced applications.

Experimental study of MgO/Mg(OH)2 thermochemical heat storage with direct heat transfer mode

J. Yan,Z.H. Pan,C.Y. Zhao

Thermochemical heat storage uses a reversible chemical reaction to store thermal energy. This thermal energy storage method has high energy density and allows long-term thermal energy storage. MgO/Mg(OH) 2 is a promising reversible reaction for thermochemical heat storage systems. The performance of this reversible reaction inside a reactor plays a key role in its practical applications. The direct type heat transfer reactor is a novel design compared with an indirect powder bed reactor. It allows the gaseous heat transfer fluid to flow through the powder in order to break the heat transfer limitation from the heat exchanger between the MgO/Mg(OH) 2 powder and the heat transfer fluid. In this study, we evaluated the performance of a direct type MgO/Mg(OH) 2 reactor under various operating conditions. Parametric analyses indicated that the heat output is limited by the reaction rate rather than the heat transfer efficiency. Results also showed the best bed thickness in order to achieve the highest temperature output. Material characterization indicated that the MgO/Mg(OH) 2 particles did not agglomerate with each other after 15 heat charging and discharging cycles.

Min Jiang,Peng Sun,Jie Zhao,Lihua Huo,Guofeng Cui

Flexible physiological medical devices have gradually spread to the lives of people, especially the elderly. Here, a flexible integrated sensor based on Au nanoparticle modified copper hydroxide nanograss arrays on flexible carbon fiber cloth ([email protected](OH)2/CFC) is fabricated by a facile electrochemical method. The sensor possesses ultrahigh sensitivity of 7.35 mA mM−1cm−2in the linear concentration range of 0.10 to 3.30 mM and an ultralow detection limit down to 26.97 nM. The fantastic sensing properties can be ascribed to the collective effect of the superior electrochemical catalytic activity of nanograss arrays with dramatically enhanced electrochemically active surface area as well as mass transfer ability when modified with Au and intimate contact between the active material ([email protected](OH)2) and current collector (CFC), concurrently supplying good conductivity for electron/ion transport during glucose biosensing. Furthermore, the device also exhibits excellent anti-interference and stability for glucose detection. Owing to the distinguished performances, the novel sensor shows extreme reliability for practical glucose testing in human serum and juice samples. Significantly, these unique properties and the soft structure of silk fabric can provide a promising structure design for a flexible micro-device and a great potential material candidate of electrochemical glucose sensor.Keywords:Cu(OH)2nanograss;Au nanoparticles;glucose detection;flexible electrochemical biosensor

Ni(OH)2 Nanosheet Electrocatalyst toward Alkaline Urea Electrolysis for Energy-Saving Acidic Hydrogen Production

Jingting Chen,Suqin Ci,Genxiang Wang,Nangan Senthilkumar,Mengtian Zhang,Qiuhua Xu,Zhenhai Wen

Graphical In nanotechnology we trust : A high-performance acid-alkali asymmetric-electrolyte electrolyzer (AAAE) was set up to implement energy-saving H 2 generation thanks to nanotechnology advances that enable us to develop self-supported electrodes with Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets for high-activity catalysis of urea oxidation. It is highly attractive to develop efficient water electrolysis route to implement hydrogen generation in a low-cost way, which while requires excess energy to surmount the activation barriers majorly limited by oxygen evolution reaction at anode side. Herein, we report an acid-alkali asymmetric-electrolyte electrolyzer (AAAE) that can achieve substantial energy saving for electrolysis hydrogen generation, thanks to the assistance of electrochemical neutralization energy (ENE) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR). To this end, free-standing Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets on carbon cloth (Ni(OH) 2 −NSs/CC) is fabricated as catalytic anode for alkaline UOR, which manifests impressively high catalytic activity with delivering 10 mA cm −2 at 1.32 V and long-term durability. The as-developed AAAE only requires an applied voltage of 0.66 V to release the electrolysis current of 10 mA cm −2 , yielding the H 2 Faraday efficiency close to 100 % along with H 2 production rate of 183.8 μmol h −1 .

Hierarchical Structures Composed of Cu(OH)2 Nanograss within Directional Microporous Cu for Glucose Sensing

Yibo Ao,Jinqing Ao,Ling Zhao,Liwei Hu,Fengsheng Qu,Biao Guo,Xue Liu

Cu(OH)2 nanomaterials are widely investigated for non-enzymatic glucose sensors due to their low-cost and excellent performance. Cu(OH)2 nanomaterials usually grow on substrates to form sensor electrodes. Reported works mainly focus on structure adjusting of the Cu(OH)2 nanostructures, while the optimization of substrates is still lacking. In the present work, directional porous Cu (DPC) was applied as the substrate for the growth of Cu(OH)2 nanograss (NG), and hierarchical structures of Cu(OH)2@DPC were prepared by alkaline oxidation. The morphology and microstructure evolution of the prepared hierarchical structures was investigated, and the non-enzymatic glucose sensing performance was evaluated. Cu(OH)2@DPC exhibits enhanced comprehensive non-enzymatic glucose sensing performance compared to the reported ones, which may benefit from both the effective adsorption of the Cu(OH)2 NG with a relatively high surface area and the high solute exchange of the DPC by a channel effect. This work provides new insights into the further improvement of the non-enzymatic glucose sensing performance of Cu(OH)2 nanostructures by optimizing the substrate structure.

Direct Laser Printing of 3D Porous Ni(OH)2/NiO Microarchitectures via Confined Interfacial Nucleation

Wenxiang Hou,Yusheng Zhang,Xuefei Chen,Xun Wang,Dayu Li,Wendai Cheng,Xixi Gong,Qu Wang,Ruofan Huang,Guanyuan Su,Chunmei Zhang,Liang Yang

Abstract Transition-metal hydroxides and oxides are widely used in optoelectronic and electrochemical devices, yet precise control over their three-dimensional (3D) microarchitecture and morphology remains a major challenge for microscale device fabrication. Here, we report a laser-confined interfacial nucleation and hierarchical growth (LCING) strategy that enables direct laser printing of Ni(OH)2/NiO microarchitectures with high spatial resolution and programmable porous structures. The localized photothermal field drives interfacial nucleation and hierarchical growth, allowing conformal integration of hydroxide microstructures and flexible construction of complex 3D geometries. We further elucidate the coupled mechanisms of mass transport, heat transfer, and reaction kinetics governing the LCING process. By rationally tuning laser printing parameters, the morphology and porosity of the resulting microstructures can be precisely controlled. The printed Ni(OH)2/NiO microdevices enable high-resolution structural color patterning and enhanced sensing performance, with the 3D porous Ni(OH)2/NiO architectures showing improved gas-sensing responses compared with lower-dimensional and nonporous counterparts. This work presents a versatile and programmable approach for high-precision manufacturing of functional metal-oxide microdevices.

Preparation of Co-CNK-OH and Its Performance in Fenton-like Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline

Dongrui Hou,Jing Luo,Qinggong Sun,Mengyang Zhang,Jianfeng Wang

In this study, Co-modified alkalinized g-C3N4(named Co-CNK-OH) was prepared for the Fenton-like photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) via a simple yet effective calcination–impregnation method. In all samples of CNK-OH with different Co2+loadings, Co-CNK-OH catalyst with the optimal content (9%) exhibited the highest catalytic activity, with 87.1% tetracycline removal and 50% removal efficiency of the total organic carbon (TOC). Mechanism studies revealed that the 9%Co-CNK-OH catalyst had the lower electrical resistance after alkalization treatment and Co2+modification, leading to a significantly accelerated interfacial charge transfer to the electron acceptor as well as effectively separating electrons and holes. The intermediates generated during the TC degradation in the photo-Fenton process were detected by HPLC-MS, which proved that the holes, superoxide radicals, and singlet oxygen are the key reactive species in the Fenton-like photocatalysis. This study provides a new option for the treatment of TC in wastewater.Keywords:Fenton-like photocatalysis;Co-CNK-OH;tetracycline;reactive oxygen species

Cu@S-Co(OH)2 hybrid electrocatalysts with high performance for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Chunyan Fan,Zehao Zang,Xiang Li,Junfang Zhang,Ping Yang,Lanlan Li,Xiaofei Yu,Xiaojing Yang,Zunming Lu,Xinghua Zhang

Transition metal hydroxides have superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity but poor hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, which greatly limits the water splitting for hydrogen production. Herein, copper modification of sulfur doped Co(OH) 2 hybrid catalyst (Cu@S-Co(OH) 2 ) was prepared by one-step of electrodeposition method which can serve as efficient hydrogen evolution reaction catalyst. In the presence of sulfur and copper, Cu@S-Co(OH) 2 hybrid catalyst exhibits the best catalytic activity, showing ultralow overpotential of 42 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Compared with Co(OH) 2 , the overpotential is improved by nearly 100 mV as well as enhanced stability. In addition, the active site poison experiments proved that the active center is cobalt metal. Combined with the adsorption strength of the catalyst for OH and H species, it is considered that both S and Cu can enhance the adsorption of OH for Co(OH) 2 , while S is contributed to the adsorption of H, and Cu can promote the desorption of H. This work provides a facile method and new insight to enhance the HER activity for transitional metal hydroxides via metal and non-metallic elements co-modulation.

Alkylamine-Confined Thickness-Tunable Synthesis of Co(OH)2-CoO Nanosheets toward Oxygen Evolution Catalysis

Chuansheng He,Linlin Yang,Xiaohui Peng,Shangheng Liu,Jia Wang,Chengyuan Dong,Delin Du,Leigang Li,Lingzheng Bu,Xiaoqing Huang

Thickness regulation of transition metal hydroxides/oxides nanosheets with superior catalytic properties represents a promising strategy to enhance catalytic performance, but it remains an enormous challenge to achieve precise control, especially when it comes to the ultrathin limit (several atomic layers). In this work, a facile strategy of alkylamine-confined growth is proposed for the synthesis of thickness-tunable metal hydroxide/oxide nanosheets. Specifically, ultrathin cobalt hydroxide and cobaltous oxide hybrid (Co(OH)2-CoO) nanosheets (Co–O NSs) with a thickness in the range of 2–6 nm (5–13 atomic layers) are synthesized by using alkylamines with different carbon chain lengths as the ligand to modulate vertical coordination ability. Co–O NSs with a thickness of 2 nm (Co–O NSs-2 nm) exhibit excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance with an overpotential of 278 mV at 10 mA/cm2. The maximized number of active sites including oxygen vacancies, optimal adsorption strength, and the highest electrical conductivity are considered as the potential factors contributing to the excellent OER performance of Co–O NSs-2 nm. This work holds great significance for the precise thickness-tunable synthesis of transition metal layered hydroxide nanosheets with modulated and improved catalytic performance.

Efficient removal of methylene blue using Ca(OH)2 modified biochar derived from rice straw

Kaifeng Wang,Na Peng,Dongqing Zhang,Haijun Zhou,Jinfeng Gu,Jiahui Huang,Chen Liu,Yang Chen,Yang Liu,Jianteng Sun

This study investigated the adsorption performance of methylene blue using Ca(OH) 2 -modified biochar derived from agricultural and forestry wastes. The results showed that the modified rice straw biochar with 20% Ca(OH) 2 addition paralyzed at 500 °C exhibited the best adsorption performance for methylene blue. The adsorption data were fitted with four kinetic models and four isothermal adsorption models. Among which, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isothermal model were the best fit, with high correlation coefficient of more than 0.99. The adsorption capacity of Langmuir fitting was 333.3 mg g −1 , which was 12.5 times higher than that for pristine rice straw biochar. The high adsorption capacity was maintained in a wide range of initial pH value of 4–12. SEM-EDX, organic element, surface structure, FTIR and XRD analysis indicated that Ca(OH) 2 modification significantly increased the polarity (higher O/C value), Ca content and the number of oxygen-containing functional groups (C-O and CO 3 2 − 32− ) for pristine rice straw biochar, thereby substantially enhancing and improving the chemical adsorption of methylene blue. The adsorption mechanism involved for methylene blue included functional groups complexation, electrostatic interaction, ion exchange (mainly Ca 2+ ) and π π – π π stacking. This study demonstrated that the modified rice straw biochar, as green and environmentally friendly raw material with cost-effectiveness, exhibited a great potential for broad application prospective subject to remediating printing and dyeing-contaminated wastewater.
