The development of nanogold catalysts with high activity and high stability is of great significance for their industrial applications. In this paper, Au-PDA@Fe 3 O 4 catalysts were prepared through the gold sol adsorption method. First, micron-sized magnetic Fe 3 O 4 spheres were synthesized via a solvothermal method, serving as the core to endow the catalyst with excellent recyclability. Subsequently, a layer of polydopamine (PDA) shell was polymerized on the magnetic core surface. By controlling the timing of introducing the gold sol containing Au nanoparticles (NPs), the spatial position of Au NPs within the PDA layer was regulated, leading to a series of magnetic core-shell nano gold catalysts with varying spatial positions of Au. Using the 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) hydrogenation as the probe, the influence of Au spatial position, Au size, and other conditions on the catalytic performance was investigated. Results showed that, in the prepared Au-PDA@Fe 3 O 4 -16 catalyst, the Au NPs are encapsulated within the PDA shell and positioned close to the outer layer. This not only provides remarkable stability to the Au NPs but also maintains their proximity to the surface of the PDA shell, allowing easier access of the substrate 4-NP to the Au NPs and conferring good reactivity upon the catalyst. The strong electron metal-support interaction between PDA and Au enables PDA to effectively stabilize Au NPs. The prepared Au-PDA@Fe 3 O 4 -16 catalyst exhibits excellent stability, maintaining a high conversion rate of 91 % even after 14 cycles of use. Our findings not only deepen the understanding of the catalytic mechanisms involved but also pave the path towards the creation of highly efficient and robust gold-based catalysts, facilitating their widespread utilization in industrial applications.

Membrane separation technology is a promising alternative for oily wastewater purification. However, developing membrane for the purification of biochemical oily wastewater is still challengeable. To this aim, a novel multifunctional photocatalytic membrane of PTPB-8 is fabricated by sequentially loading of TiO 2 , polydopamine (PDA), and BiOBr onto polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers in situ . PTPB-8 is of water contact angle (WCA) ∼ 0° and underwater oil contact angle (UOCA) 154.7 ± 2.5°, allowing it with outstanding separation and anti-fouling capability, and good reusability for emulsion separation under gravity (i.e., separation efficiency >90 %, permeation flux >300 L m -2 h −1 , and flux recovery rate >82 % for n-hexane-in-water emulsion after 15 cycles). Under simulated solar light, the ternary heterojunction TiO 2 @PDA@BiOBr is catalytically active with generating active species and the charge transfer pathway follows the mechanism of Z-type heterojunction. Consequently, PTPB-8 can kill E. coli and S. aureus by ∼ 100 % and degrade tetracycline by >90 %. The application trial results have demonstrated the great potential of PTPB-8 in the purification of biochemical oily wastewater containing bacteria and antibiotics. This study will also give a new idea for enhancing the photocatalytic activity of heterojunctions by PDA decoration.

PLLA based shape-memory polymer composites with multifunctions have attracted growing attention in biomedical applications. Generally, a single nanofiller has the problem of insufficient functionalization and easy aggregation. Therefore, we design and fabricate polydopamine (PDA) surface modified MWCNTs-ZnO hybrid nanostructure ((MWCNTs-ZnO)@PDA). The dispersion of (MWCNTs-ZnO)@PDA in PLLA is improved in comparison with the pristine MWCNTs or ZnO. The results indicate that the (MWCNTs-ZnO)@PDA nanosystem shows a synergistic effect on the mechanical properties and photothermal properties of the composites. Comparative analysis with neat PLLA demonstrates a remarkable 17% increase in tensile strength and a 19% increase in elongation at break for PLLA/(MWCNTs-ZnO)@PDA composite. Additionally, the composites exhibit excellent NIR light-induced shape memory effects with a shape recovery ratio reaching 100%. Moreover, PLLA/(MWCNTs-ZnO)@PDA composites show favorable antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). Furthermore, the polymer composites display good 3D printability, and the 3D-printed porous scaffold possesses high compressive strength and modulus. Also, the PLLA/(MCNTs-ZnO)@PDA scaffold can be compressed into a compact size and recover its original shape under NIR light irradiation. This work provides an approach to prepare novel shape-memory polymer composites with multifunctions including high strength, light-induced shape-recovery, antibacterial properties and printability.

Flexible piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) are emerging as sustainable power sources for self-charging wearable electronic devices due to their capability to harvest mechanical energy from the environment. Here, we have developed a high-output flexible PENGs based on electrospun composite nanofibers involving poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), barium titanate modified by dopamine hydrochloride (PDA@BTO) with an enhanced electroactive phase. On addition of 3 wt % PDA@BTO nanoparticles, the electroactive β-phase of the PVDF is found to be intensified to ∼88.05% as account of the synergistic interfacial interaction between the PDA@BTO nanoparticles and the ferroelectric host polymer substrate on electrospinning. The introduction of carbon black (CB) promotes piezoelectric charge transfer and increases output power. The PBTO/CB/PVDF composite nanofibers delivered the highest V OC of 55 V and the optimal I SC 3.1 μA with 3% PBTO and 1% CB. The fabricated PENG based PBTO/CB/PVDF composite nanofibers successfully charged capacitors with capacities of 0.1 μF, 0.33 μF, and 1 μF to voltages of 1.9 V, 3.2 V, and 10 V within 400 s, respectively. The device has response time of 0.1 s and the d 33 piezoelectric constant of 1.7 pC/N. The piezoelectric devices exhibited minimal variation in voltage and excellent stability over 900 cycles and the prepared piezoelectric device can light up to 20 LEDs. The potential of the piezoelectric composite nanofiber membranes for assembling mechanical energy collectors and piezoelectric sensors was demonstrated.

Development of a highly performing heterojunction photoanode is significantly important for photoelectrochemical cells. Herein, a novel strategy is proposed to construct a protonated g-C3N4 nanosheets/nitrogen-doped TiO2 photoanode inspired by polydopamine microspheres. The polydopamine microspheres can enhance the adsorption of protonated g-C3N4 nanosheets via electrostatic interaction, facilitating heterojunction formation. Moreover, the addition of the polydopamine microspheres into the preparation process can not only dope a nitrogen element into TiO2, improving solar energy utilization, but also create a vigorous pore structure in the photoanode, promoting mass transport and light scattering. Besides, the specific surface area can also be increased. Owing to these merits, the photoelectrochemical activity of this newly developed photoanode is greatly improved. Furthermore, the superiority of this photoanode is evaluated by integrating it into a photoelectrochemical cell for simultaneous wastewater treatment and power generation. The maximum power density generated by the newly developed protonated g-C3N4 nanosheets/nitrogen-doped TiO2 photoanode is about 138.5% and 40.9% higher than the TiO2 photoanode and the protonated g-C3N4 nanosheets/TiO2 photoanode prepared without using the polydopamine microspheres, respectively. The present study provides a novel strategy for developing a highly performing heterojunction photoanode.

Magnesium (Mg)-based scaffolds are garnering increasing attention as bone repair materials owing to their biodegradability and mechanical resemblance to natural bone. Their effectiveness can be augmented by incorporating surface coatings to meet clinical needs. However, the limited bonding strength and unclear mechanisms of these coatings have impeded the clinical utility of scaffolds. To address these issues, this study introduces a composite coating of high-bonding-strength polydopamine-microarc oxidation (PDA-MHA) on Mg-based scaffolds. The results showed that the PDA-MHA coating achieved a bonding strength of 40.56 ± 1.426 MPa with the Mg scaffold surface, effectively enhancing hydrophilicity and controlling degradation rates. Furthermore, the scaffold facilitated bone regeneration by influencing osteogenic markers such as RUNX-2, OPN, OCN, and VEGF. Transcriptomic analyses further demonstrated that the PDA-MHA/Mg scaffold upregulated carboxypeptidase Z expression and activated the Wnt-4/β-catenin signaling pathway, thereby promoting bone regeneration. Overall, this study demonstrated that PDA can synergistically enhance bone repair with Mg scaffold, broadening the application scenarios of Mg and PDA in the field of biomaterials. Moreover, this study provides a theoretical underpinning for the application and clinical translation of Mg-based scaffolds in bone tissue engineering endeavors.

Solar steam generation has become the most promising solar-thermal applications in recent years. Scientists often focus on the search for superior materials, efficient structures, while ignoring the use of residual heat from the water at the bottom. In this paper, a membrane distillation system that utilizes residual heat was added in a new solar house of a domestic hot water and drinking water supply system in the first place. The pDA-rGO-PTFE membrane as an excellent evaporator was characterized in solar steam generation system, which possesses good hydrophilicity capacity and high intrinsic absorption properties . And at the optimal concentration of 20 mg/mL, the evaporation rate and efficiency of pDA-rGO-PTFE membrane could reach up 1.45 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and 93.8% respectively in one sun (one sun = 1kw·m −2 ). The PTFE membrane as a separator was applied in a membrane distillation system. Under average 0.66 sun in the natural environment, the average evaporation rate of a new solar house could reach about 1.10 kg·m −2 ·h −1 , and there is an additional 0.71 kg·m −2 ·h −1 membrane permeation flux by the residual heat. In addition, the new solar house showed an excellent durability and desalination ability, the ions rejection rations of the collected condensate water were close to 99.8%. Hence, we conclude that further ideas of a new solar house were provided for solving water scarcity, domestic water consumption and the application of solar steam generation in the future.

Background Nanozymes , a new class of nanomaterials , have emerged as promising substitutes for enzymes in biosensor design due to their exceptional stability, affordability, and ready availability. While nanozymes address many limitations of natural enzymes, they still face challenges, particularly in achieving the catalytic activity levels of their natural counterparts. This indicates the need for enhancing the sensitivity of biosensors based on nanozymes. The catalytic activity of nanozyme can be significantly improved by regulating its size, morphology, and surface composition of nanomaterial. Results In this work, a kind of hollow core-shell structure was designed to enhance the catalytic activity of nanozymes. The hollow core-shell structure material consists of a nanozymes core layer, a hollow layer, and a MOF shell layer. Taking the classic peroxidase like Fe 3 O 4 as an example, the development of a novel nanozyme@MOF, specifically p-Fe 3 O 4 @PDA@ZIF-67, is detailed, showcasing its application in enhancing the sensitivity of sensors based on Fe 3 O 4 nanozymes. This innovative nanocomposite, featuring that MOF layer was designed to adsorb the signal molecules of the sensor to improve the utilization rate of reactive oxygen species generated by the nanozymes catalyzed reactions and the hollow layer was designed to prevent the active sites of nanozymes from being cover by the MOF layer. The manuscript emphasizes the nanocomposite's remarkable sensitivity in detecting hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), coupled with high specificity and reproducibility, even in complex environments like milk samples. Significance and novelty This work firstly proposed and proved that Fe 3 O 4 nanozyme@MOF with hollow layer structure was designed to improve the catalytic activity of the Fe 3 O 4 nanozyme and the sensitivity of the sensors based on Fe 3 O 4 nanozyme. This research marks a significant advancement in nanozyme technology, demonstrating the potential of structural innovation in creating high-performance, sensitive, and stable biosensors for various applications.

The synthesis of two-dimensional metal–organic frameworks (2D MOFs)/polymer core–shell composites is reported which were composed of polydopamine modified 2D Zr-1,3,5-(4-carboxylphenyl)-benzene (2D Zr-BTB) nanosheets and silica microspheres via a double-solvent approach. In this way, the composites were obtained under the condition of two solvents with different polarities to avoid agglomeration and uneven modification of most MOFs particles on the surface of the silica, existing inevitably in the one-pot method. Compared with the reported MOFs@silica composites adopting one-pot solvent method, the prepared composites exhibited significantly enhanced separation performance for sulfonamides, antibiotics, nucleosides, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons compounds. Furthermore, the retention mechanisms were demonstrated by studying the relationships of chromatographic retention factors of tested analytes versus a variety of parameters under RPLC and HILIC modes, respectively. The superior chromatographic repeatability and stability were validated through the relative standard deviations of the retention time and/or column efficiency, which were found to be less than 0.8% and 0.9%, respectively. The material showed efficient separation ability for several types of compounds and provided another selectivity for preparing composites based on 2D MOFs nanosheets and other functional molecules. Objective:This study aims to engineer a novel nanoparticle formulation for combined tumor therapy, designated as PDA@Mn-siSur-c-NPs, which comprises a polydopamine/manganese dioxide (PDA@MnO2) core alongside survivin-targeting siRNA and cyclo(RGD-DPhe-K)-targeting moiety. Methods: The PDA@Mn-siSur-c-NPs were constructed and subjected to detailed characterization. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) was employed to quantify manganese content. To assess siRNA stability within the system, samples were incubated with 50% fetal bovine serum (FBS) before agarose gel electrophoresis analysis. Additionally, cellular internalization by 4T1 cells and in vitro photothermal conversion efficiency of the formulation were evaluated. ICP-OES was further utilized to investigate the in vivo pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution of manganese. Animal model studies were conducted to assess the anti-breast cancer efficacy of PDA@Mn-siSur-c-NPs in combination with infrared irradiation. Results: The newly developed PDA@Mn-siSur-c-NPs demonstrated superior siRNA protection, reduced toxicity, and high photothermal conversion capacity. When combined with photothermal therapy (PTT), these nanoparticles exerted enhanced synergistic anti-tumor effects. Delivery of survivin siRNA resulted in a significant downregulation of survivin protein expression in tumor tissues. Moreover, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed that the nanoparticles possess favorable imaging properties. Conclusions: This research demonstrates that the integration of PDA@Mn-siSur-c-NPs with PTT holds considerable therapeutic promise for improved breast cancer treatment.

Core-shell-shell PPH nanospheres were designed for antibiotic-free wound therapy. • Cationic PHMB and released Cu 2+ cooperatively eliminate bacteria and biofilms. • PDA layer regulates pH-responsive Cu 2+ release with favorable hemocompatibility. • PPH promotes HUVEC migration in vitro and neovascularization in vivo . • Accelerated wound remodeling was achieved with enhanced collagen deposition. Bacterial infection and biofilm formation pose major obstacles to wound healing. To address these challenges, we designed a core-shell nanocomposite, Cu-PBG@PDA@PHMB (PPH), consisting of a copper-doped phosphate glass (Cu-PBG) core, a polydopamine (PDA) interlayer, and a polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) outer shell. The PPH nanospheres exert a complementary antibacterial effect via contact-killing and ion release: the cationic PHMB shell disrupts bacterial membranes through electrostatic interaction, whereas the PDA layer mediates pH-responsive Cu 2+ release. This combined effect is primarily driven by substantial contact-induced membrane damage, and the presence of released Cu 2 ⁺ ions further enhances this membrane-disruptive action, ultimately leading to efficient bacterial killing. In vitro evaluations demonstrated that PPH exhibited notable antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ), markedly reduced mature biofilm biomass, and substantially disrupted biofilm integrity. Furthermore, the nanocomposite exhibited favorable biocompatibility and significantly promoted endothelial cell migration. In vivo experiments in a S. aureus -infected murine wound model demonstrated that PPH treatment was associated with accelerated wound closure, reduced bacterial burden, and improved angiogenesis and collagen deposition. This nanoplatform represents a promising therapeutic strategy for the clinical management of infected wounds.

Long-term clinical translation of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) is severely hampered by thromboembolism and device-related infection, both originating from inadequate biocompatibility of the device-blood interface. Current titanium surface modifications fail to simultaneously deliver durable antithrombotic and antibacterial performance, while conventional polydopamine-copper (PDA-Cu) coatings suffer from inherent limitations. Herein, we report a one-step rapid co-polymerization strategy based on mussel-inspired polyphenol chemistry to fabricate a copper-integrated polydopamine/tannic acid nanocoating on titanium (Ti/PDT(Cu)). By incorporating tannic acid rich in catechol/pyrogallol moieties, we achieve synergistic acceleration of dopamine oxidative polymerization with copper ions, dramatically shortening the fabrication time to 8 h (vs. 24 h for traditional PDA coatings). This process simultaneously constructs a robust dual-crosslinked network through covalent/hydrogen bonds and metal-phenolic coordination, exhibiting a uniform nanoscale-roughened structure. Comprehensive physicochemical characterizations confirm homogeneous coating deposition, excellent hydrophilicity, uniform Cu distribution, and superior long-term structural stability (95.68% thickness retention after 7 days of physiological immersion). The optimized coating displays broad-spectrum and durable antibacterial activity, with 92.79% and 89.73% reduction ofE. coliandS. aureusat 24 h, respectively, and retains>>89% antibacterial efficacy after 7 days of continuous elution (n= 3, *p<<0.05). Moreover, the coating enables stable and sustained catalytic nitric oxide generation (43.85±±2.36 μM cumulative release over 14 days) that mimics endothelial function, resulting in 69.4% inhibition of platelet adhesion and an ultralow hemolysis ratio of 0.97% (n= 3). Critically, it maintains excellent cytocompatibility with L929 fibroblasts (>>90% cell viability after 72 h co-culture). This work addresses key limitations of conventional PDA-based functional coatings, realizes synergistic antithrombotic and antibacterial dual functions showing great potential for blood-contacting cardiovascular device applications, and provides a facile and robust surface engineering platform for long-term implantable cardiovascular devices.
