A Facile Strategy for Low Young's Modulus PDMS Microbeads Enhanced Flexible Capacitive Pressure Sensors

Yupeng Sun,Huiling Tai,Zhen Yuan,Zaihua Duan,Qi Huang,Yadong Jiang

Flexible pressure sensors are widely demanded in human care systems. A simple and effective strategy for sensor fabrication can markedly promote its application. Herein, a facile strategy is employed to prepare a flexible capacitive pressure sensor with a polydimethylsiloxane microbeads-modified dielectric layer. Owing to the microbeads structure, the proposed sensor achieves a sensitivity of 0.048 kPa −1 in the range of 0–10 kPa with a wide dynamic range (up to 100 kPa). The sensitivity is nine times higher than that of the planar structure. Moreover, the microbeads structured sensor obtains a low limit of detection (0.2 kPa), fast response time (120 ms), and good stability (variation lower than 3.30% after 1000 loading/unloading cycles at 20 kPa). The finite-elemental analysis reveals that the microbeads structure is critical to enhance the performance of sensors. Finally, the pressure sensor is successfully applied to detect touch signal, joints movement, and breathing, exhibiting its promising prospects as smart wearable devices. Furthermore, the strategy may provide a new idea for the microstructural design of capacitive pressure sensors.

A flexible strain sensor with high adhesion and mechanical enhancement based on PDMS/MWCNTs

Wen Li,Xinxin Cai,Jinrong He,Hui Liu,Xuefeng Gui,Shudong Lin

With the rapid advancement of flexible electronic technology, flexible sensors have demonstrated significant application potential in the fields of electronic skin and wearable health monitoring. However, their widespread application is still limited by challenges including poor substrate adhesion, insufficient mechanical strength, and inadequate conductive layer stability. To address the weak interfacial adhesion and pronounced signal hysteresis of PDMS, this study modified it via the incorporation of PEG-PPG-PEG and ANF. This modification enhanced the elastomer’s adhesiveness and mechanical properties, while also reducing signal hysteresis. Hydroxylated MWCNTs were chosen as the conductive material, and a MWCNTs conductive layer was fabricated via vacuum filtration. Encapsulation with a double layer of A 1 -P 6 -PDMS result in a sandwich-structured conductive film A 1 -P 6 -PDMS/MWCNTs/A 1 -P 6 -PDMS, greatly improving the sensor's cyclic stability and durability. Experimental results indicate that the sensor exhibits high elongation at break (>140 %), strong adhesion (capable of stably holding a 20 g weight), high tensile strength (>2.5 MPa), fast response time (52 ms) and high sensitivity (GF = 27.63). It can accurately monitor physiological signals such as human joint movements, offering a promising method for the widespread application of electronic skin.

Immobilization of PDMS-SiO2-TiO2 composite for the photocatalytic degradation of dye AO-7

Xu Feigao,Tan Wencheng,Liu Heng,Li Dan,Li Yuexiang,Wang Min

Crack-free PDMS-SiO 2 -TiO 2 composite as photocatalyst was prepared for degrading dyes by using thin-film fixed bed reactor. The hydrophobic surface of the photocatalyst loaded with PDMS-SiO 2 -TiO 2 composite could be considered as an extractant for organic pollutants. The effect of different supports including pumice stone, medicinal stone, and fiberglass for photocatalytic efficiency were compared. Under the same condition, it was found that the photocatalytic degradation effect of dyes was best when PDMS-SiO 2 -TiO 2 composite was fixed on pumice stone rather than medicinal stone or fiberglass. Furthermore, when pumice stone was used as the support for PDMS-SiO 2 -TiO 2 composite, the photocatalytic degradation effect of dyes hardly decreased after five cycles.

Flame-retardant PDMS-coated nanocellulose aerogels via ambient-pressure drying for oil spill cleanup

Bingjie Hu,Wenchao Wu,Heng Chang,Wei Qi,Rongxin Su

Ambient-drying enables fabrication of superhydrophobic PDMS-PCNF aerogels. • The PDMS-PCNF aerogel exhibits a high oil absorption capacity (up to 66.83 g/g). • This facile approach exceptionally minimizes energy cost. • Inherent flame retardancy and rapid biodegradability ensure eco-friendly use. Superhydrophobic aerogels hold great promise for oil spill treatment, yet their practical use is often constrained by energy-intensive production, high costs, and limited biodegradability. We present a flame-retardant, superhydrophobic aerogel synthesized by phosphorylated cellulose nanofibers (PCNF) via energy-efficient ambient-pressure drying process. The nanofiber aerogel is dip-coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to achieve a robust porous network with high water contact angles (∼150°) and excellent compressive resilience (≥50% strain). The resulting PDMS-PCNF aerogel exhibits high oil absorption capacities (∼66 g/g for various oils) and maintains performance after repeated use. Additionally, the aerogel is inherently biodegradable and flame-resistant, enhancing its environmental compatibility. Crucially, this ambient-pressure drying strategy significantly reduces energy consumption and manufacturing costs compared to freeze-drying. This study offers a practical cost-effective strategy for eco-friendly oil spill cleanup and oil-water separation. Download: Download high-res image (171KB) Download: Download full-size image

Marangoni-driven assembly of HOF-PDMS composite membranes with enhanced CO2/O2 separation performance

Guowei Chen,Yang He,Shen Xiang,Yiping Zhao,Li Chen

Oxygenation membranes for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation systems require ultrathin, defect-free selective layers that simultaneously deliver high gas permeability, selectivity, and operational stability. Herein, we report a Janus composite membrane featuring a dense polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) selective layer integrated with a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF-TGU-307), designed to overcome filler aggregation and transport limitations commonly encountered in ultrathin mixed-matrix membranes. A Marangoni convection-driven assembly strategy induces strong in-plane flow at the gas–liquid-solid interface, enabling uniform dispersion and horizontal embedding of HOF crystallites within the PDMS matrix. Theoretical analysis and molecular dynamics simulations confirm that Marangoni flow suppresses capillary-driven aggregation, while a stable PDMS-HOF interfacial network forms polar gas-transport pathways and promotes interfacial CO 2 enrichment. As a result, the optimized M3-HOF membrane exhibits a high single-gas CO 2 permeance of 1883 GPU and an ideal CO 2 /O 2 selectivity of 5.2, measured at 0.1 MPa and 25 °C, together with an oxygen transfer rate of 219.8 mL·min −1 ·m −2 . The Janus architecture further provides excellent interfacial stability, effectively preventing liquid penetration (LEP > 0.6 MPa). Auxiliary evaluations demonstrate reduced protein adsorption and favorable blood-contacting compatibility, supporting its potential for membrane oxygenators. This computation-guided, Marangoni-driven fabrication strategy offers a scalable route for constructing high-performance oxygenation membrane with controlled ultrathin selective layers.

Robust and Degradable PDMS-Epoxy Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Surfaces for Sustainable Marine Antifouling

Xiaoyu Xu,Qianyun Tan,Yuesong Wang,Xu Zhang,Tao Zhang,Fa-Qian Liu

Marine biofouling is a significant issue affecting the long-term stable operation of ships, offshore platforms, and subsea equipment. To address the ecotoxicity and microplastic accumulation issues associated with traditional marine antifouling coatings, this study developed a biodegradable PDMS-epoxy crosslinked network-based Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Surfaces (SLIPS) marine antifouling coating. This system utilizes the low surface energy of Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) segments and excellent structural compatibility with dimethyl silicone oil to achieve stable lubricant retention. Simultaneously, the crosslinked epoxy network imparts good mechanical stability and durability to the coating, with the adhesion strength increasing by 197% compared with that of Sylgard PDMS184. Furthermore, by introducing hydrolyzable ester bonds into the network, the material maintains long-term service stability while possessing a certain degree of environmental degradation capability, thereby reducing the potential microplastic residue risk of traditional silicon-based antifouling materials. The coating demonstrated degradability in artificial seawater under high-speed stirring, exhibiting an average mass loss of approximately 9.28% after 30 days while maintaining good structural integrity. The results show that the prepared SLIPS coating exhibits excellent broad-spectrum antifouling properties, capable of preventing the attachment of more than 95% of typical marine fouling organisms, including bacteria, Chlorella , and conches, thereby effectively protecting the surface from marine biofouling. This work provides a promising strategy for developing environmentally friendly marine antifouling coatings with long-term stability and biodegradability. Agarose modification on PDMS/PES composite membrane for improved hemocompatibility and anti-fouling performance

Xinlu Zhang,Zelin Liao,Xiaokun Wang,Xuehua Ruan,Hao Gong,Gaohong He,Xiujuan Zhang

Agarose, the natural hydrophilic polysaccharide with good biocompatibility, low immunogenicity and low cost which has been widely used in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine but not in biomedical equipment, was employed to modify the potential oxygenation membrane, the core component for blood oxygenation ex vivo in the artificial lung machine. The oxidized agarose was successfully coated onto the hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface forming a hydrophilic layer via intermolecular chemical bonding as well as physical interactions based on characterization and analyses from SEM, HNMR, FTIR, XPS and water contact angle measurement. The agarose modification significantly improved the hemocompatibility, reducing protein adsorption by 50–60 % and hemolysis rate from ∼0.45 % to ∼0.2 %, elongating the plasma recalcification time and blood clotting time, as well as alleviating platelet adhesion, and the antibacterial performance of the membrane, which would reduce the contamination of the membrane thus prolonging the membrane service life as well as blood clotting, blood damage and blood fouling. Meanwhile, the CO 2 /O 2 gas selectivity was promoted to ∼9, an 64 % increase in comparison to that of unmodified membranes, which would significantly enhance the gas exchange efficiency of the oxygenation membrane. Moreover, the membrane modified with agarose exhibited long-term stability against platelet adhesion and blood leakage. This agarose modification strategy is simple yet effective, providing new ideas for oxygenation membrane synthesis and improvement.

Fabrication and morphological optimization of TPU/PDMS blend nanofibers via one-step blending electrospinning

Xuanjie Zong,Chengpeng Zhang,Xue Shang,Nianqiang Zhang,Jilai Wang

Blend nanofibers have attracted significant interest in biomedical, energy storage, and flexible electronics due to their outstanding synergistic properties. However, the coaxial electrospinning of thermoplastic polyurethane/polydimethylsiloxane (TPU/PDMS) nanofibers remains challenging due to complex processing procedures and high associated costs, which impede further material optimization. To address these limitations, a one-step blending electrospinning strategy was developed by formulating a TPU/PDMS blend system, achieving homogeneous nanoscale dispersion and integration. Using nanofiber diameter and morphology as metrics, we systematically explored the effects of solution concentration, feed rate, and voltage via single-factor experiments and response surface methodology. Results revealed that concentration and feed rate critically influenced nanofiber morphology. The constructed regression model exhibited strong predictive capability (coefficient of determination R2 = 0.9865, adjusted R2 = 0.9693). Scanning electron microscopy characterization confirmed the formation of uniform, adhesive overlapped structures, validating the effective co-forming behavior. Furthermore, energy dispersion spectroscopy mapping and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results confirm the nanoscale uniform distribution and physical blending of TPU and PDMS. This study presents an efficient strategy for producing uniform TPU/PDMS blend nanofibers and contributes to the rational design of multifunctional materials with tunable structure-property relationships. The findings enhance the practical potential of electrospinning in flexible electronics, biomedical and intelligent sensing.

Photothermal-lubrication synergistic low-interfacial-toughness PDMS coating for large-area de-icing applications

Yanhua Lei,Xiaohui Du,Yi'’an Zhao,Qing Chen,Yuan Yuan,Dmitry A. Vorontsov,Tao Liu

Large-scale ice removal in extreme environments faces critical challenges of excessive energy consumption and interfacial adhesion issues. A photothermal PDMS low interfacial toughness composited coating incorporating polypyrrole-coated silica nanoparticles (PPy@SiO₂) and phenylmethyl silicone oil (PMSO) was developed for energy-efficient de-icing in larger scale in subzero conditions. Optimizing component ratios (30 wt% PPy@SiO₂, 30 vol% PMSO) yielded a coating with ultralow ice adhesion (25 kPa) and interfacial toughness (0.19 J/m 2 ), achieving 68 % and 74 % reductions in de-icing force and ice adhesion compared to pure PDMS. The synergy between PMSO-enhanced chain mobility (42 % modulus reduction) and PPy@SiO₂-induced interfacial stress concentration enabled these improvements, while nanoparticle-induced surface roughness enhanced hydrophobicity (124.6° water contact angle). Under 1 sun illumination, the coating rapidly reached 78 °C (room temperature) and 3 °C (−20 °C ambient) within 5 min, demonstrating sustained frost resistance for 20 min in darkness. With 92 % de-icing efficiency retention after 30 freeze-thaw cycles and 2.1 kW·m −2 photothermal power density, this dual-functional coating combines photothermal ice prevention and low-adhesion ice removal, offering a practical solution for large-scale equipment in polar environments. The design strategy provides insights for developing interfacial-engineered materials with large-scale de-icing capacity under extreme conditions.

Flexible and reusable nanobowl-based Ag NPs@Ag-PDMS substrate for enhanced SERS detection

Yue Feng,Jin Xia,Huiliang Zhang,Longhao Han,Xiaoyan Du,Jinyang Wang,Mingyao Tian

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has gained widespread attention as an effective method for trace molecular detection. Herein, a bowl-structured Ag NPs@Ag-PDMS substrate was developed via a multi-step assembly strategy, where silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were partially embedded into the bowl-structured surface of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix while additional Ag NPs were incorporated into the interior. This synergistic architecture significantly amplified the local electromagnetic field, as confirmed by experiments and finite element simulations. Using rhodamine 6G (R6G) as a probe and a fiber Raman spectrometer, the optimized substrate enabled detection at 5 nM with an enhancement factor of 1.22 × 10 6 . The substrate also exhibited good signal uniformity with a relative standard deviation of 6.99 % and maintained performance after five rinsing–reuse cycles. Furthermore, it successfully detected thiram residues on apple peels, showing a linear response down to 3 ng/cm 2 . These findings highlight the high sensitivity, reproducibility, and reusability of the substrate, indicating strong potential for real-world SERS applications in food inspection, environmental analysis, and public health screening.

Efficient oil recovery from emulsions through PDMS decorated nanofibrous membranes via aggregation-release demulsification

Yue Zhu,Yajie Ding,Jianqiang Wang,Haibo Lin,Fu Liu,Chuyang Y. Tang

Efficient oil/water recovery from emulsions is a challenging task for membrane separation in terms of perm-selectivity and long-term stability. Oil fouling on membrane surface and intrapore disables the efficient recovery of water and oil, limited by size exclusion. Herein, this work proposes an aggregation-release demulsification mechanism to address the fouling issue and achieve efficient oil and water recovery, respectively. Specifically, an ultra-thin sub-10 nm polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) shell layer was constructed on a hydrophilic polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber core surface through the hydrolysis and condensation between vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) and dimethoxydimethylsilane (DMS). The aggregation-release demulsification process on the lipophilic and slippery PDMS surface could be proposed as, oil droplet adsorption, spread out, aggregation and slippery, which vacates the membrane pore space and makes way for water flow. Thus, both purified water and aggregated oil phase could be easily recovered from the permeates. The prepared membrane enabled continuous operation without cleaning. The membrane shows high water permeance (2800 L m -2 h −1 bar −1 ), high emulsion treatment capacity (8000 mL), and high oil (∼85 %) and water (nearly 100 %) recovery. The strategy reported in the current study might offer an opportunity for advancing practical applications of membrane separation for valuable oil products from emulsions.

A pump-free paper/PDMS hybrid microfluidic chip for bacteria enrichment and fast detection

Zhengshan Zhu,Zilan Lv,Li Wang,Haolan Tan,Yi Xu,Shunbo Li,Li Chen

Developing portable and sensitive biosensors for bacteria detection is highly demanded due to their association with environmental and food safety. Paper-based microfluidic chip is the suitable candidate for constructing pump-free biosensor since paper is hydrophilic, low-cost and easy to use. However, the contradiction between sensitivity and small sample volume seriously affects the application of paper-based chip for bacteria detection. Here, a new microfluidic biosensor, combining large PDMS reservoir for sample storage, hydrophilic paper substrate for pump-free water transport, coated microspheres for bacteria capture and super absorbent resin for water absorption, is designed for the detection of bacteria in aqueous samples. Once the sample solution is introduced in the reservoir, water will automatically flow through the gaps between microspheres and the target bacteria will be captured by the aptamer coated on the surface. To facilitate PDMS reservoir bonding and ensure water transport, the upper side of paper substrate is coated with Polyethylenimine modified PDMS and the bottom side is kept unchanged. After all the solution is filtrated, fluorescent dye strained bacteria are enriched on the microspheres. The fluorescent intensity representing the number of bacteria captured is then measured using a portable instrument. Through the designed microfluidic biosensor, the bacteria detection can be achieved with 2 mL sample solution in less than 15 min for water or 20 min for diluted milk. A linear range from 10 CFU/mL to 1000 CFU/mL is obtained. The paper-based 3D biosensor has the merits of low-cost, simple operation, pump-free and high sensitivity and it can be applied to the simultaneous detection of multiple bacteria via integrating different aptamers.
