Ammonium dinitramide (ADN) is a high-energy green oxidizer with significant potential for use in solid propellants; however, its practical application is restricted by its strong hygroscopicity and low safety. In this study, morphology control and surface coating were simultaneously addressed by preparing ADN/PVA composite particles with different PVA contents by membrane emulsification. At a PVA content of 5%, the ADN/PVA composite microspheres exhibited favorable morphology and a high degree of sphericity, with no phase transition induced and the crystal structure well preserved. DSC results showed that the initial decomposition temperature of ADN/PVA increased by 21.88–26.50 °C compared to that of raw ADN, and the exothermic peak became narrower, indicating that the energy release of ADN was more concentrated and its thermal stability was significantly improved. Meanwhile, the impact sensitivity and friction sensitivity were reduced by 33.33% and 16.67%, respectively, relative to raw ADN, and the moisture absorption rate was reduced by 87.92%. Therefore, the ADN/PVA composite particles prepared by membrane emulsification exhibit excellent thermal stability and anti-hygroscopicity.

As a green technology with great development potential, solar-driven interfacial evaporation is considered to be an effective way to alleviate the freshwater crisis and achieve efficient water treatment. However, there are still great challenges in preparing evaporators with efficient evaporation, continuous water supply, and structural stability. In this paper, a low-cost CS/PVA@CNTs composite aerogel solar evaporator was prepared by freeze-drying method. CS and PVA form a stable three-dimensional hydrophilic porous backbone through hydrogen bond interactions, ensuring continuous and efficient water transport. At the same time, the introduction of photothermal CNTs realizes the excellent light absorption capacity and efficient photothermal conversion efficiency of the evaporator. Under the condition of 1 kW·m −2 light condition, the evaporation rate of CPAC-5 samples reached 1.73 kg·m −2 ·h −1 , and the evaporation efficiency was as high as 99.73%. Moreover, beyond its efficient evaporation performance, the CPAC-5 evaporator also exhibits excellent purification capabilities for various industrial pollutants. The experimental results show that the evaporator can effectively purify heavy metal ions (Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ and Co 2+ ), organic dyes (MO, MB) and strong acid and alkaline industrial sewage. It is worth noting that the purified condensate can be used for the germination and growth of soybean and mung bean seeds, which verifies its practical feasibility in agricultural irrigation. This research provides new technical ideas for sustainable water treatment and agricultural irrigation driven by solar energy.

Ionic thermoelectric (i-TE) materials have attracted increasing attention for low-grade heat harvesting owing to their high thermovoltage output under small temperature gradients. However, the development ofn-type i-TE materials remains challenging. Electrode-enabled polarity regulation provides a promising alternative to material-design strategies for developingn-type i-TE devices. In this work, a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based ionic hydrogel was prepared with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and potassium chloride (KCl) through a freeze–thaw process, and its thermoelectric behavior was regulated by electrodes. While the i-TE hydrogel device with typical Cu electrodes exhibitedp-type behavior, replacing the electrodes with graphite paper (GP) electrodes converted the device response fromp-type ton-type. Morphological and spectroscopic analyses suggest that the GP surface selectively adsorbed K+ions through cation–π interactions, suppressing cation thermodiffusion and enabling Cl−-dominated ion migration under a temperature gradient. As a result, the PVA-GP device achieved a maximumSiof −4.36 ± 0.26 mV K−1. In addition, the device exhibited favorable thermoelectric output, with a maximumPFiof 57.668 μW m−1K−2, a room-temperatureZTof 0.0864, and a peak transient power density of 2.33 mW m−2during short-time discharge. Owing to the large interfacial area of the GP electrodes, the device could also function as an ionic thermoelectric supercapacitor with appreciable energy-storage capability. This work demonstrates an effective electrode-engineering strategy for constructingn-type i-TE devices and provides a feasible route for simultaneous low-grade heat harvesting and transient energy storage.

The development of high-performance biodegradable active packaging materials is essential for reducing environmental impact while improving food preservation. In this study, a synergistic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based coating system was developed by incorporating structurally engineered antioxidant-loaded silica particles. Two types of functional carriers were synthesized through a surfactant-free self-assembly strategy: (i) BHT-loaded silica nanocapsules (BHT@SiO 2 -NC) with dense core–shell structures derived from Ph8-PEOS, and (ii) BHA-loaded silica aerogel microparticles (BHA@SiO 2 -AP) with porous spherical architectures derived from Ph8-PEG6-PEOS. The selection of organosilicon precursors was guided by the distinct melting points of BHT and BHA, enabling optimized encapsulation and controlled release behavior. The particles were incorporated into the PVA matrix at loadings of 25–75 wt% to form composite coatings. Structural characterization confirmed well-defined nanocapsules and highly porous aerogel networks. BET analysis revealed that aerogel particles possessed high surface area, which decreased after BHA loading due to pore occupation, whereas the dense-shell nanocapsules exhibited the lowest surface area. The BHA@SiO 2 -AP system significantly reinforced the PVA matrix, increasing fracture stress and elongation at break by 79.8% and 61.3% at 25 wt%, while also enabling tunable air permeability from 1.2 to 42.52 L·m −2 ·s −1 . In contrast, BHT@SiO 2 -NC primarily functioned as a controlled antioxidant carrier with limited influence on mechanical and barrier properties. Importantly, sustained antioxidant activity over 14 days was achieved through complementary mechanisms: release-adsorption synergy from porous BHA aerogels and diffusion-controlled release from BHT nanocapsules. This study demonstrates a versatile strategy for engineering multifunctional biodegradable coatings with tunable mechanical performance, gas permeability, and controlled antioxidant release for advanced food packaging applications. Highlights Architecturally distinct silica particles enable multifunctional PVA coatings. Aerogel microparticles enhance strength and toughness simultaneously. Particle architecture governs structure–property–function relationships. Dual release–adsorption mechanism improves antioxidant efficiency. Nanocapsules provide sustained, diffusion-controlled antioxidant release.

Multifunctional membranes capable of simultaneously separating oil–water emulsions and removing organic dyes from complex aqueous systems have garnered considerable attention in recent years. However, the facile fabrication of high-performance membranes that integrate both separation and adsorption functions remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report the fabrication of a polyacrylonitrile/polyvinyl alcohol–chitosan (PAN/PVA-CS) bilayer membrane with asymmetric wettability via electrospinning. The micro/nanostructures and surface wettability of the as-prepared membranes were precisely tailored by modulating the chitosan (CS) concentration. The resultant PAN/PVA-CS membrane exhibited an overall separation efficiency exceeding 97.5% for mechanically emulsified samples. Notably, the PVA-CS layer demonstrated superhydrophilicity and excellent underwater oleophobicity, enabling the gravity-driven simultaneous separation of oil-in-water emulsions and adsorption of water-soluble Congo red dye without requiring external pressure. The maximum adsorption capacity for Congo red reached 61.3 mg g−1, surpassing that of numerous reported membrane-based and adsorbent materials. Concurrently, the hydrophobic PAN layer in the bilayer structure enabled the separation of water-in-oil emulsions. Overall, this work provides a promising strategy for the rational design of asymmetrically wettable multifunctional membranes with great potential for practical application in the purification of complex industrial wastewater containing both emulsified oils and soluble organic dyes.

Cold−resistance CPEs were prepared with balsa wood skeleton and PVA/EG gel. • The CPEs showed a high ionic conductivity of 6.08 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at −30 °C. • Cold-resistant all−in−one SCs (ACS) have been prepared by remolding PVA gel. • Cold-resistant ACS showed specific capacitance of 284.8 mF cm −2 at −30 °C. All−in−one configuration and cold−resistance endow energy−storage devices with portability and the ability to work at low temperature but bring harsh electrolyte and electrode requirements. Compared to sandwich-like supercapacitors, all−in−one configured supercapacitors can significantly reduce electrode-electrolyte contact resistance, improve energy density, simplify the assembly process, effectively avoid multilayer structure slip under deformation, and lengthen service life. Herein, cold−resistance composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) were prepared with chemically treated balsa wood skeleton and polyvinyl alcohol/ethylene glycol (PVA/EG) gel. The synergistic effects of wood and gel provide the CPEs with outstanding mechanical properties with high tensile strengths of up to 340 kPa. The microporous structure in the wood provides abundant ion transport channels, resulting in a high ionic conductivity of 6.08 × 10 −3 S cm −1 even at −30 °C. A series of cold-resistant all−in−one supercapacitors (ASC) have been prepared by remolding PVA gel, which reduced the electrolyte/electrode interfacial resistance, improved the portability and maintained a low temperature performance. The cold-resistant ACS showed outstanding performance, maintaining a small R s (42.1 Ω) and R ct (18.5 Ω) and high area specific capacitance (284.8 mF cm −2 ) at −30 °C. It is anticipated that cold−resistant, all−in−one supercapacitors based on wood/polymer complex electrolytes offer broad applications as energy storage devices. Drilling fluid loss is a major challenge facing oil and gas drilling operations worldwide and often results in significant economic losses. Although traditional liquid-crystal materials (LCMs) offer key advantages such as self-adaptive crack plugging capabilities and adjustable gelation times. However, due to its limited pressure resistance, its range of applications remains limited. In this study, a simple freeze-thaw strategy was employed to innovatively develop a PVA-based plugging hydrogel. This method leverages physical cross-linking properties to reduce the need for chemical cross-linking agents and improve the material's rheological properties. The 15% PVA hydrogel achieved a tensile strength of 6.99 MPa. Its compressive strength was 4 MPa at 80% strain. Furthermore, it exhibited excellent fatigue resistance, with compressive strength decreasing by only 21% after 50 cycles. Simulated plugging tests demonstrated that the prepared hydrogel exhibits excellent sealing performance under a water pressure of 5 MPa. This study provides an economically viable and environmentally friendly solution for preventing drilling fluid loss, making it a highly promising candidate material for deep-sea drilling applications.

One-pot wet-spinning strategy for scalable fabrication of PVA eutectogel fibers with triple-network reinforcement. • Multiphysical networks synergistically integrate hydrogen bonds, ionic conduction, and crystalline domains for mechanical-electrical coupling. • Exceptional tensile strength (11 MPa) and elongation (1023%) overcoming strength-toughness trade-off. • Process-driven structure regulation paradigm shifting from composition optimization to forming control. Conductive hydrogels have been widely explored for intelligent wearable devices and flexible electronics; however, simultaneously achieving high mechanical robustness and wide-temperature stability remains challenging. Herein, a one-pot strategy is proposed to fabricate polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) eutectogel fibers using PVA as the polymer backbone, choline chloride and ethylene glycol as a green solvent system, and ionic liquids (ILs) as ion suppliers, thereby constructing a synergistically reinforced network composed of polymer network - ion-conducting network - crystalline reinforcing network. Assisted by uniaxial stretching and cyclic freezing–thawing treatments, the network structure becomes highly oriented and compact, leading to markedly enhanced mechanical properties and wide-temperature stability. The resulting PVA eutectogel fibers exhibit outstanding and tunable physical properties: specifically, the CEG/PVA₃ fibers possess a high tensile strength of 11 MPa and an ultrahigh elongation at break of 1023%, while the CEG/PVA₁ fibers achieve a peak electrical conductivity of 2.54 mS cm⁻¹ at 25 °C. Meanwhile, these fibers maintain stable strain-sensing performance over a broad temperature range from −40 to 60 °C with a rapid response time of approximately 0.2 s. This work presents a feasible strategy for developing mechanically robust, wide-temperature flexible sensors. Download: Download high-res image (198KB) Download: Download full-size image

Flexible dielectric materials with elevated dielectric constants and enhanced electrical breakdown resistance are critical for energy storage and wearable electronics. Herein, we developed a dual-strategy approach to enhance the dielectric performance of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) based composites: (1) surface modification of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene via H 2 O 2 oxidation to construct insulating TiO x coatings, and (2) structural engineering via a three-layer sandwich design. The MXene@TiO x /PVA interlayer was confined between pure PVA barrier layers using sequential solution casting. Systematic characterization confirmed the formation of amorphous TiO x coatings that effectively mitigates dielectric dissipation while improving voltage endurance. Furthermore, the sandwiched structure construction further improved these properties, leading to superior dielectric properties. The optimized composite with 2 wt.% Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene@TiO x in the interlayer demonstrated a dielectric constant of 12.62 (at 100 Hz) with ultralow loss tangent of 0.059, while achieving a breakdown strength of 194.2 kV/mm and an energy density of 2.25 J/cm 3 . This synergistic strategy of surface passivation and structural engineering provides a scalable pathway for designing eco-friendly dielectric composites with balanced electrical performance.

Blueberries are susceptible to microbial contamination and mechanical damage after harvesting, thereby accelerating their quality deterioration. Therefore, in the present work, thyme essential oil@halloysite nanotubes (TEO@HNTs)-loaded pullulan/gelatin/PVA (PGP) aerogels with antimicrobial activities and cushioning properties were developed to address these issues. The results showed that TEO achieved a 91.1 % encapsulation efficiency in HNTs and hydrogen bonding interactions were formed between TEO and HNTs. TEO@HNTs improved the crystallinity, thermal stability, compression properties, and surface hydrophobicity of the PGP aerogels. The TEO@HNTs-loaded aerogels exhibited a sustained release of TEO and antimicrobial activity against E. coli (inhibition zone of 13.92 mm), S. aureus (inhibition zone of 16.55 mm), and B. cinerea . Moreover, the aerogels offered good cushioning for blueberries when subjected to mechanical impact, thus maintaining their quality during storage. In addition, cell cytotoxicity analysis showed that cell viability exceeded 94 %, indicating the excellent biocompatibility of the TEO@HNTs-loaded aerogels. The above results suggested promising prospects for the development of a multifunctional aerogel to maintain the quality of food products, such as blueberries, which are susceptible to microbial contamination and mechanical damage.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel as a hydrogel electrolyte faces issues such as fracture, dehydration, and poor conductivity, limiting its application in flexible zinc-air batteries. To address these, we propose a triethanolamine (TEA)-modified PVA-based hydrogel material (TPVA). TEA promoted formation of a uniform mesoporous structure and enables TPVA hydrogel to exhibit excellent mechanical properties, with an elongation at break (425%) approximately twice that of PVA (230%). Additionally, TPVA material retains excellent hydration after 120 h, demonstrating a significant enhancement in water retention. TPVA-based ZABs achieved a power density of 46.1 mW cm −3 , which is 3.1 times enhancement than that of PVA-based (14.9 mW cm −3 ), and demonstrated significantly extended cycling stability, maintaining stable charge–discharge operation for 35.7 h, outperforming PVA system (11.5 h). Dynamic simulation revealed TEA-PVA interactions, with TPVA showing denser hydrogen bond networks and lower potential energy. This work proposes a promising approach to enhance PVA hydrogel electrolytes for flexible ZABs.
