Commercial wearable piezoelectric sensors possess excellent anti-interference stability due to their electronic packaging. However, this packaging renders them barely breathable and compromises human comfort. To address this issue, we develop a PVDF piezoelectric nanoyarns with an ultrahigh strength of 313.3 MPa, weaving them with different yarns to form three-dimensional piezoelectric fabric (3DPF) sensor using the advanced 3D textile technology. The tensile strength (46.0 MPa) of 3DPF exhibits the highest among the reported flexible piezoelectric sensors. The 3DPF features anti-gravity unidirectional liquid transport that allows sweat to move from the inner layer near to the skin to the outer layer in 4 s, resulting in a comfortable and dry environment for the user. It should be noted that sweating does not weaken the piezoelectric properties of 3DPF, but rather enhances. Additionally, the durability and comfortability of 3DPF are similar to those of the commercial cotton T-shirts. This work provides a strategy for developing comfortable flexible wearable electronic devices.

Municipal sewage purification is an important means to alleviate water shortage. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a kind of ultrafiltration membrane widely used in water treatment but easy to incur biological contamination in the membrane separation process. Herein, a sequence of PVDF-based ultrafiltration membranes grafted with varying quaternary amines were designed to obtain fabulous antibacterial performance. Firstly, the antibacterial block copolymer composed of PVDF and quaternary ammonium salts is synthesized using the atom transfer radical polymerization technique. Subsequently, the copolymer is integrated into the matrix membrane through a phase inversion method. With a gradient change of alkyl chain lengths, we further explore the relationship between substituent structure and antibacterial properties. All functionalized membranes showed exceptional antibacterial activity with the highest efficiency of 83.3 % to E. coli and 69.1 % to E. faecalis. The as-anticipated properties were ascribed to the puncture effect shared by alkyl group and protective effect imparted by hydrophilic layer. During a series of cross-flow filtration experiment lasting for 10 h, the normalized flux retention was increased by a maximum of 1.52 times compared to pristine PVDF membrane. These results further highlight that the PVDF-based membrane functionalized by quaternary ammonium salt grafting is capacity of praiseworthy antibiofouling ability. Overall, our research provides a promising strategy to fabricate fouling-resistant ultrafiltration membranes and substantiates their potential utility in the realm of wastewater treatment.

The solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) are considered as a decent solution to rationally supersede the liquid one for the sake of dependable operation security and higher energy density when it comes to the next-generation lithium (Li) metal batteries . Herein, a sort of composite solid electrolyte with in-built ion-conductive 3D framework is designed to enable the stable performances of Li-metal batteries . The framework comprised of the Li + -conducting garnet components (Li 6.75 La 3 Zr 1.75 Nb 0.25 O 12 , LLZN) and polyvinylidene fluoride- co -hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) provides the vulnerable part with mechanical support and well-behaved electrochemical stability. Stemmed from this embedded framework, the whole electrolyte exhibits high Li + conductivity (4.6×10 −4 S cm −1 ), improved high-voltage endurance (4.4 V versus Li/Li + ), better Li-anode compatibility and high-temperature feasibility. Additionally, the synergistic enhancements between LLZN and PVDF-HFP potentially facilitate the homogeneous ionic flux, thereby resulting in the persistence of a sound solid-electrolyte interphase. The solid-state batteries assembling composite solid electrolyte also deliver the preferable battery performance, featuring high-capacity output with stable cyclability. Application of this electrolyte in a pouch cell further demonstrates its feasibility and flexibility. This design concept is anticipated to give the way of exploring brand new solid electrolytes and boosting their overall electrochemical performances toward practicality.

PVDF-based polymers have garnered significant attention in the field of high-power density electrostatic capacitors due to their exceptional dielectric strength . However, their practical applications are constrained by low charge-discharge efficiency ( η ) and energy storage density ( U e ), which stem from high ferroelectric relaxation and low breakdown strength ( E b ). Here, a hydrogenated glassy polymer poly(styrene-methyl methacrylate-methylallyl alcohol) (PSMA) is designed and synthesized to be homogeneously distributed in PVDF through voltage-assisted 3D printing-hot pressing, resulting in a flexible composite film . The findings demonstrate that PSMA, rich in hydrogen bonds and high modulus strength, effectively mitigates the ferroelectric phase transition of PVDF to enhance η . Additionally, the voltage-assisted 3D printing process induces an entropy gain mechanism, facilitating the uniform distribution of the two phases and enhancing the interfacial properties for enhancing E b . Remarkably, the study achieves prominent growth in energy storage performance, with U e and η reaching 18.1 J/cm 3 and 80 % at 525 MV/m, respectively. These remarkable results highlight the potential of 3D printing technology in enhancing the energy storage performance of PVDF-based dielectrics.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based piezoelectric materials are promising candidates for sensors, transducers, and actuators, due to several distinctive characteristics such as good flexibility, easy processability, and high mechanical resistance. In the present work, PVDF-based nanocomposites loaded with BaTiO3 nanoparticles (NPs) of various weight fractions were prepared by the electrospinning technique and used for the fabrication of a flexible piezoelectric pressure tactile sensor (PPTS). The addition (5, 10, and 20 wt %) of piezoelectric BaTiO3 NPs improves the piezoelectric performance, especially the β phase crystals of PVDF/BaTiO3 (10 wt %) nanocomposites that can reach 91.0%. In addition, the mechanical strength of PVDF/BaTiO3 nanocomposites is up to 26.7 MPa, which is an increase of 66% compared to neat PVDF. It should be emphasized that the elongation at break continuously increases from 71% to 153% with increasing BaTiO3 NPs. More importantly, the PPTS (piezoelectric pressure tactile sensor) with the combination of electrospun PVDF/BaTiO3 nanocomposite membranes and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) displays excellent flexibility and linear response to external mechanical force. The flexible PPTS devices capable of detecting different music sounds have potential uses in wide fields, such as voice recognition, speech therapy, and ultrasound imaging.

Flexible electronics components, including wearable sensors , miniature energy supply devices, and energy harvesting systems based on polymer piezoelectric materials , have garnered extensive attention. This study focuses on the preparation of PZT nanofibers (PZT NFs) via electrospinning and their modification with polydopamine, the fabrication of PVDF/PZT NFs nanocomposite films through casting, and the production of tri-layer nanocomposite films using hot pressing. The alignment of the PZT NFs perpendicular to the electric field direction enhances the breakdown strength ( E b ) and facilitates the polarization of the nanocomposite films. At the interlayer interfaces within the tri-layer structure, electron traps extend the breakdown path, attenuating charge concentration and mitigating the electric field concentration effect. Consequently, the tri-layer films exhibit excellent electrical properties. Notably, the P4P tri-layer nanocomposite films have a high E b of 290.47 kV/mm and a piezoelectric coefficient of -24 pC/N. This paper presents a promising strategy for enhancing the piezoelectric properties of polymer piezoelectric materials applied in sensors and energy harvesting systems.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based polymer electrolytes (PEs) with good electrochemical performance and processability as well as low-cost advantage, have great potential applications in solid-state lithium (Li) metal batteries (SSLMBs). PVDF-based PEs are generally produced by employing a solution-casting approach with N , N -dimethylformamide (DMF) as the solvent, accompanied by the formation of [DMF-Li + ] complex, which facilitates the Li-ion transport. However, the residual DMF can react continuously with lithium (Li) metal, thereby deteriorating the interface layer in the middle of the PVDF-based PEs and Li anodes. Herein, we introduce propylene carbonate (PC) into the PVDF-based PEs to regulate the solvation structure and stabilize the interface layer between the PEs and Li anodes. PC accelerates the dissociation of lithium oxalyldifluoroborate (LiODFB). Consequently, “lithium propylene dicarbonate (LPDC)‒B-O″ oligomer forms as the interfacial layer with high tenacity, homogeneity, and densification, which improves the interfacial contact and suppresses the continuous reaction between the residual DMF and Li anode. We further demonstrate that the PVDF-based PE prepared with DMF-PC mix-solvents shows improved room-temperature ionic conductivity (1.18 × 10 −3 S/cm), enhanced stability against electrodes, and superior cycling performance in LiCoO 2 -based SSLMBs (maintaining 84 % of the initial discharge capacity after 300 cycles).

Abstract To develop high performance mixed matrix gel polymer electrolyte, the synergistic effect of blending PVDF (PEO/PVDF weigh ratio of 85:15) and adding nano-TiO 2 (0.5–2 wt.%) to traditional monomer poly (ethylene oxide) was investigated. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that poly (ethylene oxide)/poly (vinylidene fluoride) blend had an excellent thermal performance. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that poly (ethylene oxide)/poly (vinylidene fluoride) blend leads to lower crystallinity and the amorphicity of corresponding gel polymer electrolyte increases with increasing nano-TiO 2 concentration. The maximum ionic conductivity (2.12 × 10 −6 and 6.37 × 10 −6 S/cm) of poly (ethylene oxide)/-(TiO 2 ) 0.5 and poly (ethylene oxide)/poly (vinylidene fluoride)/-(TiO 2 ) 0.5 gel polymer electrolyte at room temperature (25 °C) were obtained, respectively. The prepared poly (ethylene oxide)/poly (vinylidene fluoride)-TiO 2 gel polymer electrolyte demonstrated about 2.6 and 1.8-fold increment in the fracture strength as compared to that of poly (ethylene oxide) gel polymer electrolyte and poly (ethylene oxide)-TiO 2 gel polymer electrolyte. The average transmittance of poly (ethylene oxide)/poly (vinylidene fluoride)-TiO 2 gel polymer electrolyte was about 90 % in the visible region. With good electrical, mechanical and optical performance, it is very suitable for being applied in electrochromic glass. Graphical Abstract

The efficient conversion of ambient acoustic energy into electrical power has attracted considerable research interest for its potential to sustainably power microelectronics and self-powered sensors. Nevertheless, the development of an acoustoelectric transducer that simultaneously delivers broadband response, high conversion efficiency, and substantial power output remains a pressing challenge. Herein, we report a broadband high-output acoustoelectric transducer. The device architecture features an electrospun barium titanate (BTO)/poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) nanofiber membrane, sandwiched between two gold-coated poly(ethylene terephthalate) electrodes with a precisely engineered air spacer. Upon acoustic wave excitation, the membrane and electrode exhibit contact-separation motion, simultaneously exciting both piezoelectric and triboelectric effects. The optimized device, comprising a 0.5 mm air spacer and a 3% BTO-doped PVDF-HFP nanofiber membrane, achieves a peak output of 410.28 V and 50.24 μA under 115 dB acoustic excitation at 170 Hz. The instantaneous maximum power density reaches 11576.12 μW/cm3 (the peak surface power density is 845.06 μW/cm2). The electrical energy generated can directly power miniature electronic devices without additional energy supplying equipment. This structure effectively converts acoustic waves into an electric signal from 1 to 5000 Hz (including infrasound). Therefore, the device holds potential for detecting and warning against natural disasters associated with infrasound emissions. This acoustoelectric transducer thus exhibits promising application prospects in noise energy recovery, environmental monitoring, self-powered systems, speech recognition, and human-computer interaction.

With the continuous advancement of modern electronics and power equipment, there is a growing demand for film capacitors with higher dielectric constants and discharge energy densities. In this study, we fabricated a sandwich-structured thin film using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-bismuth sodium titanate (NBT) as the outer layers and boron nitride (BN) nanosheets as the intermediate layer. The PVDF-NBT layers enhance the material's polarization strength and dielectric constant, while the BN layer ensures its breakdown strength and insulation properties. With an optimal composition of 6 wt % BN and 3 wt % NBT, the composite film achieves an energy storage density of 13.2 J cm−3 and a breakdown strength of 5000 kV/cm while maintaining a low dielectric loss of approximately 0.02 at 1000 Hz. These results indicate that the proposed composite structure holds great promise for applications in dielectric energy storage.

Currently, electrospun nanofiber membranes are widely used in sensor and photocatalysis research fields. In this study, polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) flexible nanofiber membranes were successfully prepared by electrospinning technology. The narrow band gap semiconductor tin selenide (SnSe) was innovatively introduced as a functional filler, and a SnSe/PVDF-HFP composite fibrous membrane with excellent piezoelectric and photocatalytic dual properties was developed. By systematically optimizing the load process parameters of SnSe, including loading methods, hydrothermal duration for crystal size control, and ultrasonic time for loading amount regulation, the piezoelectric properties of the material were significantly improved. Experimental results demonstrate that the composite fibrous membrane exhibits outstanding dual functionality: On one hand, the flexible sensor based on its piezoelectric properties achieves an output voltage of 23.1 V and a sensitivity of 440 mV–1, enabling precise monitoring of human motion. On the other hand, the piezo-photocatalytic synergistic enhancement mechanism is proposed based on kinetic studies. Under the combined action of light irradiation and ultrasonic vibration, the composite fibrous membrane as a catalyst achieves 99.0% degradation rate of methylene blue within 120 min while maintaining excellent stability and recyclability, effectively addressing the recovery challenges of traditional powder catalysts. This work not only provides a novel material design strategy for integrating piezoelectric sensing and photocatalytic dual functions but also opens innovative pathways for developing wearable flexible electronic devices and easily recoverable catalysts.

Lithium-ion batteries are pivotal in the development of advanced compact energy storage systems. In this study, the network-structured lithium iron phosphate-polyethylene oxide-polyvinylidene fluoride (LFP–PEO–PVDF) electrodes, the PEO electrolyte and PEO/LFP–PEO–PVDF composite electrodes were prepared by 3D gel printing (3DGP). The binder of the LFP–PEO–PVDF electrode is a PEO–PVDF composite binder, and the different PEO–PVDF ratios in the binder were varied with pure PEO (no PVDF), 9:1, 7:3 and 5:5, which corresponded to four electrode slurries. The results show that the electrodes printed with a PEO–PVDF ratio of 7:3 exhibited good shape retention capability and electrochemical performance. The printing slurry of 7:3-electrode had the apparent viscosity of 1.20 Pa s at a shear rate of 358.2 s −1 , which was suitable for printing. The electrochemical measurement results show that the capacity retention rates of the network-structured electrodes with 7:3-electrode was 85.5% after 300 cycles at 0.5 C. The incorporation of PVDF into the binder improved the structural retention capability and capacity retention rate of the electrode during cycling. The printed PEO electrolyte shows good shape retention and uniform thickness, with an ionic conductivity of 1.32 mS cm −1 at 60 °C. The PEO/LFP–PEO–PVDF composite electrodes demonstrate good interfacial contact between the electrode and electrolyte layers, and the composite electrodes delivered a specific capacity of 97.2 mAh g −1 and a capacity retention rate of 71.7% after 50 cycles at 0.1 C.
