In-situ carbon encapsulated Pb/PbO nanoparticles derived from spent lead paste for lead-carbon battery

Puqiang He,Yapeng He,Yi Yang,Hui Huang,Zhongcheng Guo

The sulfation and serious hydrogen evolution reaction render a substantial obstacle for the further development of lead-carbon batteries (LCBs). Herein, lead tartrate precursors derived from spent lead paste are pyrolyzed to in-situ synthesize a carbon encapsulated Pb/PbO nanoparticles , which are introduced as additives into the negative electrodes of LCBs. The in-situ formed carbon encapsulation Pb/PbO nanoparticles ensure the long-lasting inhibition of the hydrogen evolution reaction in the negative electrodes. The discharge capacity after the introduction of the composites is improved by 24 % compared with the control at 0.1C, and the cycle life is almost twice as long as the control. The remarkable hydrophilicity of the composites as 3D electro-osmotic pumps facilitates the absorption and transportation of electrolyte to the negative active materials. Additionally, the carbon encapsulated Pb/PbO nanoparticles could provide abundant nucleation sites for Pb/PbSO 4 conversion and reinforce the reversibility of the transformation between the substances. Benefiting the cooperative interaction between the multiple mechanisms in the composites, the sulfation and serious hydrogen evolution on the negative electrode are dramatically inhibited, consequently thus contributing to the admirable promotion of the overall performances of LCBs.

Dual-anchored configuration involving Pb(NO3)2 for effective and stable FAPbI3 quantum dot solar cells

Meidan Que,Shenghui He,Lili Gao,Boyue Zhang,Yabo Wang,Jin Chen,Bo Li,Wei Huang,Peng Zhong

The dynamic nature of formamidine lead iodide quantum dots (FAPbI3 QDs) limits their practical application by causing the appearance of ionic vacancy defects on the surface of QDs, which would then allow for significant trap-assisted non-radiative recombination of charge carriers. Herein, we explore a feasible surface modification strategy for passivating vacancy defects. Different lead salts are employed in the post-treatment procedure of quantum dot films. Based on both experimental and theoretical findings, Pb(NO3)2 passivation comprises Pb2+ and FA+. On the quantum dot surface, the O atoms from NO−3 form strong chemical bonds with FA+, and the O–C⋯O–N structure, defined by a dual-anchored configuration, contributes to the establishment of a stable crystal structure by exhibiting optimal bond lengths (3.486 Å and 3.775 Å, respectively) and a higher binding energy (10.51 eV). Finally, FAPbI3 quantum dot solar cells simultaneously achieve both exceptional environmental stability and a champion photoelectric conversion efficiency of 12.11%. This work provides valuable insights into surface chemical engineering of quantum dots, paving the way for high-performing photovoltaic devices.

Adsorption of Pb(II) by UV-aged microplastics and cotransport in homogeneous and heterogeneous porous media

Bokun Chang,Zixuan Huang,Xiaodong Yang,Tianhuan Yang,Xianhui Fang,Xianbao Zhong,Wei Ding,Gang Cao,Yajun Yang,Feinan Hu,Chenyang Xu,Ling Qiu,Jialong Lv,Wei Du

To investigate the adsorption effects of aged microplastics (MPs) on Pb(II) and their co-transport properties in homogeneous (quartz sand) and heterogeneous (quartz sand with apple branches biochar) porous media, we explored the co-transport of UV-irradiated aged MPs and coexisting Pb(II) along with their interaction mechanisms. The UV aging process increased the binding sites and electronegativity of the aged MPs' surface, enhancing its adsorption capacity for Pb(II). Aged MPs significantly improved Pb(II) transport through homogeneous media , while Pb(II) hindered the transport of aged MPs by reducing electrostatic repulsion between these particles and the quartz sand. When biochar, with its loose and porous structure, was used as a porous medium, it effectively inhibited the transport capacity of both contaminants. In addition, since the aged MPs cannot penetrate the column, a portion of Pb(II) adsorbed by the aged MPs will be co-deposited with the aged MPs, hindering Pb(II) transport to a greater extent. The transport experiments were simulated and interpreted using two-point kinetic modeling and the DLVO theory. The study results elucidate disparities in the capacity of MPs and aged MPs to transport Pb(II), underscoring the potential of biochar application as an effective strategy to impede the dispersion of composite environmental pollutants.

Pb-N Chemically Anchors CsPbBr3 on 1D Porous Tubular g-C3N4 for Enhanced Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Dong Li,Kaixuan Wang,Ying Chen,Renyi Li,Jiahong Tang,Yizhou Zhao,Wei Guo,Qi Chen,Yujing Li

Graphical A 0D/1D CPB@TCN heterojunction photocatalyst for CO 2 reduction is synthesized by immobilizing CsPbBr 3 (CPB) quantum dots on one-dimensional porous tubular g-C 3 N 4 (TCN). The strong Pb−N chemical bonding between CPB quantum dots and TCN provides a fast charge transfer channel for the CPB@TCN, which promotes the efficient separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers, resulting in excellent photocatalytic activity. Halide perovskite CsPbBr 3 (CPB) quantum dots (QDs) are considered as a promising candidate for solar-driven CO 2 conversion for their unique optoelectronic properties and suitable band structures. However, the CO 2 conversion efficiency of pristine CsPbBr 3 quantum dots is severely limited due to their rapid electron-hole pair recombination and insufficient active sites. In this study, by immobilizing CPB QDs onto one-dimensional (1D) porous tubular g-C 3 N 4 (TCN), an effective 0D/1D CPB@TCN heterojunction photocatalyst for CO 2 reduction is fabricated. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with experimental studies demonstrate that CPB QDs are uniformly anchored on the surface of TCN through Pb−N chemical bonding, resulting in efficient separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers in CPB@TCN photocatalysts. The resultant CPB@TCN photocatalysts exhibit significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for CO 2 reduction with the highest conversion rate of 22.62 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 5.33-times higher than that of pristine CPB QDs. This work unveils the interfacial bonding mechanism of CPB@TCN heterojunction through Pb−N chemical bond, which provides new insights for the development perovskite-based heterojunction photocatalysts.

Understanding and manipulating the crystallization of Sn–Pb perovskites for efficient all-perovskite tandem solar cells

Yang Xuke,Ma Tianjun,Hu Haojun,Ye Wenjiang,Li Xin,Li Mingyu,Zhang Afei,Ge Ciyu,Sun Xianglang,Zhu Yongxin,Yan Shuyu,Yan Jun,Zhou Ying,Li Zhong’an,Chen Chao,Song Haisheng,Tang Jiang

All-perovskite tandem solar cells are promising as next-generation high-efficiency photovoltaic devices. However, further progress in tin-lead (Sn–Pb) mixed perovskites, which are essential as the narrow-bandgap bottom sub-cell, is hampered by unbalanced crystallization processes, leading to inhomogeneous films and reduced power conversion efficiency (PCE). Here we provide a complete understanding of the formation of Sn–Pb films, from the precursor solution to the final film. We find that the total crystallization barrier for Sn-based perovskites is limited by the desorption of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), while Pb-based perovskites experience a smaller DMSO desorption barrier. By engineering the reaction barrier in mixed films via tailoring the DMSO content, we obtain synchronous Sn–Pb perovskite crystallization and high-quality homogeneous films. On the basis of this understanding, we demonstrate single-junction Sn–Pb perovskite solar cells with a PCE of 22.88% and all-perovskite tandem devices with a certified PCE of 28.87%, fabricated by antisolvent-free methods. The unencapsulated tandem devices retain 87% of their initial PCE after about 450 h with maximum power point tracking under 1 sun illumination.

Ultra-high strain in Bi0.5(Na0.41K0.09)TiO3 Pb-free piezoelectric ceramics modified by Sr(Hf0.5Sb0.4)O3

Xinyu Liu,Taotao Ai,Yazhong Zheng,Xinyu Chen,Qin Li,Qian Qiu,Ying Zheng,Yuan Zhou,Haikui Song,Kun Yu,Chunlin Song,Haibo Zhang,Yan Yan,Gang Liu

The lead-free piezoelectric ceramics used in piezoelectric actuators have attracted extensive attention owing to their substantial electric-field-induced strain. In this study, The (1- x )Bi 0.5 (Na 0.41 K 0.09 )TiO 3 - x Sr(Hf 0.5 Sb 0.4 )O 3 (BNKT- x SHS) piezoelectric ceramics were synthesized using the conventional solid-state reaction method. The impact of SHS substitution on the microstructure and electrical properties was systematically explored. Among them, the BNKT-0.015SHS sample, featuring ergodic relaxor states, demonstrates a high piezoelectric strain coefficient ( d 33 *) of 785 p.m./V under a low electric field of 50 kV/cm(Strain = 0.392 %). It exhibits a repeatable strain value of 0.47 % under an 80 kV/cm electric field( d 33 * = 590 p.m./V). Moreover, the strain values remain around 0.4 % between room temperature and 100 °C, with variations within 90 %. The heightened repeatable strain response is considered to be linked to the electric field-induced reversible phase transition occurring within the ergodic relaxor state. The higher strain temperature stability is ascribed to the coexistence of quadrilateral polar nanoregions and rhombic polydomain nanoregions. This study provides an effective example for achieving significant strain responses, presenting a feasible candidate material for applications in piezoelectric actuators.

A novel photoelectrochemical strategy for lead ion detection based on CdSe quantum dots co-sensitized ZnO-CdS nanostructure

Jun-Tao Cao,Xiao-Jing Liao,Yu-Ling Wang,Yan-Ming Liu

A novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor for lead ion (Pb 2+ ) detection was proposed on the basis of the CdSe quantum dots (QDs) co-sensitized ZnO-CdS nanostructure and the specificity of aptamer. The CdSe QDs-capped cDNA, as a signal enhancement element, could hybridize with the aptamer on the sensing platform to generate a CdSe/CdS/ZnO dual co-sensitized structure, realizing a great enhancement in photocurrent response. In the presence of Pb 2+ , the aptamer on the sensing interface specifically bound with the Pb 2+ to form G-quadruplex structures, which greatly inhibit the hybridization between aptamer and CdSe QDs-cDNA, leading to a decrement of the photocurrent signal. As the concentration of Pb 2+ increased, the photocurrent response showed a diminishing tendency. Under the optimized conditions, the fabricated PEC aptasensor exhibited a linear response between photocurrent variation and the logarithm of Pb 2+ concentration in the scope of 1.0 × 10 −9  M to 1.0 × 10 −5  M with a detection limit of 3.4 × 10 −10  M. Moreover, the aptasensor has been applied in the determination of Pb 2+ in environmental water samples with the good selectivity .

Zizhan Guo,Jingru Zhang,Ming Jiang,Guoqiang Peng,Li Hua,Jiayue Dong,Fengfeng Jia,Zhigang Xia,Zhiwen Jin,Zhaoqing Lu

X-ray equipment often needs to be used in complex and variable environments. Combining X-ray shielding materials with pressure sensing capabilities can ensure that the equipment effectively shields X-rays while under pressure, safeguarding operational safety. In this study, the Janus structure was designed to be equipped with high shielding performances and intelligence for Cs-Pb-Br systems perovskite (Cs-Pb-Br)/MXene/aramid nanofiber (ANF) composites. In Cs-Pb-Br/MXene/ANF Janus film, the rational longitudinal distribution of Cs-Pb-Br originated from Janus structure and the internal reflection originated from layered MXene significantly enhance the X-ray shielding performances. Kill two birds with one stone, the layered MXene in Janus structure endows film with sensitive mechanical sensing properties. The attenuation efficiency and mass attenuation coefficient of Cs-Pb-Br/MXene/ANF Janus film were 70.5–83.2 % and 83.2–121.5 cm 2 /g under a continuous X-ray generated from a tungsten target with applied voltage ranging from 20 kV to 70 kV. The Janus film demonstrated ideal strain sensing performance, lightweight (0.96 cm 2 /g), robust tensile stress (25.5 MPa), and excellent flexibility, laying a foundation for producing next generation of X-ray shielding materials, which are light, flexible and intelligent.

Unlocking bimetallic active sites via a desalination strategy for photocatalytic reduction of atmospheric carbon dioxide

Feng Xuezhen,Zheng Renji,Gao Caiyan,Wei Wenfei,Peng Jiangguli,Wang Ranhao,Yang Songhe,Zou Wensong,Wu Xiaoyong,Ji Yongfei,Chen Hong

Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) metal oxyhalides exhibit outstanding photocatalytic properties with unique electronic and interfacial structures. Compared with monometallic oxyhalides, bimetallic oxyhalides are less explored. In this work, we have developed a novel top-down wet-chemistry desalination approach to remove the alkali-halide salt layer within the complicated precursor bulk structural matrix Pb 0.6 Bi 1.4 Cs 0.6 O 2 Cl 2 , and successfully fabricate a new 2D ultrathin bimetallic oxyhalide Pb 0.6 Bi 1.4 O 2 Cl 1.4 . The unlocked larger surface area, rich bimetallic active sites, and faster carrier dynamics within Pb 0.6 Bi 1.4 O 2 Cl 1.4 layers significantly enhance the photocatalytic efficiency for atmospheric CO 2 reduction. It outperforms the corresponding parental matrix phase and other state-of-the-art bismuth-based monometallic oxyhalides photocatalysts. This work reports a top-down desalination strategy to engineering ultrathin bimetallic 2D material for photocatalytic atmospheric CO 2 reduction, which sheds light on further constructing other ultrathin 2D catalysts for environmental and energy applications from similar complicate structure matrixes.

High-sensitivity cholesterol biosensor based on ChOx-decorated Au-Ag@Au/PB-PEDOT: Exploring serum-saliva relationship

Yuteng Hang,Rusha Gopali,Xiaorong Mao,Ling Zhu,Mengyang Tao,Guangjie Gu,Feng Li,Zhangxuan Liu,Xinnan Li,Ruyu Jiang,Xinxin Xu,Ning Bao,Yang Liu

Elevated cholesterol is a major cardiovascular risk factor, but current detection methods are resource-intensive. Non-invasive point-of-care testing is promising yet limited by sensitivity, and the blood-saliva cholesterol correlation requires further investigation. We developed an electrochemical biosensor featuring cholesterol oxidase immobilized on screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) modified with conductive Au-Ag@Au core-shell nanoparticles and Prussian blue/poly-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (PB-PEDOT) nanocomposites. Morphological, spectroscopic, and electrochemical analyses (including impedance spectroscopy, heterogeneous electron transfer kinetics, and active surface area quantification) confirmed the biosensor superior conductivity. The biosensor achieved exceptional performance: a broad linear range (0.01–1.0 mM), low detection limit (3.3 μM amperometric LOD; 2.8 μM via EIS), and high sensitivity (57.3 μA/mM·cm 2 amperometric; 781 Ω/mM·cm 2 impedimetric). Clinical validation demonstrated excellent agreement with standard colorimetric methods in human serum and saliva for cholesterol tested in biological compounds and robust stability. A strong serum-saliva correlation (Pearson's correlation coefficient as 0.928) supports noninvasive monitoring feasibility. The anti-interference capability of the proposed biosensor was evaluated against common interferents, including glucose, lactic acid, uric acid, ascorbic acid, bovine serum albumin, cysteine, and their mixture. The results confirmed its high specificity against these typical biological matrix components. Particularly significant is its non-invasive detection capability, which eliminates the need for painful blood draws or invasive sample collection procedures. A key innovation lies in the synergistic integration of conductive Au-Ag@Au core-shell nanoparticles with PB-PEDOT nanocomposites on SPCEs, which significantly enhances electron transfer and catalytic activity, yielding an exceptionally sensitive and stable sensing platform. The biosensor sets itself apart by achieving superior analytical performance concurrently with robust clinical validation in both serum and saliva, firmly establishing its potential for reliable non-invasive cholesterol monitoring.

Biohybrid system EcN@PB for reshaping tumor immunosuppressive microenvironment to improve photothermal therapy induced antitumor immune response

Qiang Feng,Hui Zhang,Guixian Ye,Jialiang Zhang,Jianbin Xiao,Zhiyu Wang,Jinyu Zhang,Meiqi Pan,Jukai Feng,Yang Zhong,Zhongying Shi,Jianmin Wang,Jingfeng Liu

Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a promising tumor treatment with high selectivity, precise targeting, and low side effects. It induces photothermal ablation of tumors, and activates anti-tumor immune response by promoting immunogenic cell death (ICD) of tumor cells. Prussian Blue (PB) mediated PTT has made great progress, but high interstitial fluid pressure and solid stress in tumors significantly inhibited PB accumulation and diffusion, seriously affecting its PTT effect. Herein, we constructed a novel biohybrid system EcN@PB to enhance the PB-mediated photothermal immunotherapy. EcN@PB utilized the inherent tumor targeting ability of EcN to achieve precise delivery of PB to the tumor. On tumor-bearing mouse model, we demonstrated that EcN@PB selectively accumulated in tumors and achieved efficient photothermal ablation upon near-infrared laser irradiation, effectively inhibited the growth of primary tumor. Moreover, EcN@PB-mediated PTT induced ICD in tumor cells, promoted the maturation of dendritic cells, enhanced the infiltration of cytotoxic T lymphocytes and inhibited the recruitment of regulatory T cells in tumor tissues. Notably, EcN, as an immune adjuvant, effectively induced the polarization of tumor-associated macrophages towards the anti-tumor M1 phenotype, further reshaped the tumor immune microenvironment and activated systemic anti-tumor immune response. Therefore, EcN@PB-mediated photothermal-immunotherapy significantly inhibited the growth of distant tumors and prevented recurrence. Overall, EcN@PB significantly enhanced the targeted delivery of PB to tumor tissues and offered a promising strategy for photothermal-immunotherapy by leveraging the pathogen-associated molecular patterns carried by EcN to activate anti-tumor immune response.

Self-sacrificing/transitioning construction of defect-enriched coral-like magnesium oxide for highly efficient Pb(II) removal

Xinzhong Deng,Wanting Wang,Ying Jiang,Junping Li,Hai Liang

Defect-enriched magnesium oxide with a specific structure exhibits great potential for the effective removal of heavy metals from wastewater. However, its practical application is significantly hindered by the high cost and tedious manufacturing process due to the reliance on templates and auxiliary agents. Herein, defect-enriched coral-like magnesium oxide (DFC-MgO) was synthesized via a self-sacrificing/transitioning strategy without using templates or auxiliary agents. The defects and coral-like structure endow DFC-MgO with abundant active sites and high porosity. Benefiting from these structural advantages, the DFC-MgO achieves an ultra-high adsorption capacity of 2955.07 mg/g for Pb ions in wastewater. Notably, lead contaminants can be completely removed with an extremely low dosage of 0.1 g/L at a typical concentration of 50 mg/L. In addition, DFC-MgO maintained high Pb 2+ removal efficiency in real water samples and effectively adsorbed multiple divalent metal ions. Dynamic adsorption tests further demonstrated that the effluent Pb 2+ concentration remained below the national standard limit of 1 mg/L for a treated volume of 1600 mL. Kinetic analysis indicated that adsorption occurs via a combination of chemisorption on heterogeneous sites and physisorption, while equilibrium behavior was best described by a combined Sips and Toth model, reflecting complex adsorption mechanisms. Several possible mechanisms, including ion exchange, precipitation, and oxygen vacancies, are involved in the Pb 2+ adsorption process. A preliminary cost evaluation further indicates that DFC-MgO can be prepared at a relatively low material cost. This study provides a facile approach for designing MgO with special structures and defect features for efficient wastewater treatment.
