Flexible plasmonic Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates were fabricated using cellulose textile fibers, in which the textile fibers were recycled from waste paper in an eco-friendly way. The Glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride (GTAC) with positive charges was grafted onto the surface of the cellulose textile fibers through cationization. Plasmonic silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) with negative charges were decorated onto the cellulose textile fibers via electrostatic interactions . After cationization, the variation range of the diameter of the cellulose textile fibers was significantly increased because part of the cellulose was dissolved under alkaline condition, leading to more ‘hot spots’ for SERS during the shrinking process. The cellulose textile fiber-Ag NPs nanocomposite was employed for monitoring bisphenol A (BPA) in water and soft drink by SERS and the sensitivity of BPA detection achieved 50 ppb. The recovery values of BPA in soda water samples were from 96% to 105%. These results illustrate that the cellulose textile fiber-Ag NPs nanocomposite can be used as flexible, high sensitivity SERS substrates for detecting harmful ingredients in food or environment.

The fabrication of a coffee ring was studied in this work to improve its sensitivity in detecting trace analytes based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Gold nanoparticles were synthesized with diameters of ~40 nm through the sodium citrate reduction method, and rhodamine 6G (R6G) was employed as a probe to evaluate the performance of the fabricated coffee rings. The results showed that the coffee ring formed from the water-washed gold nanoparticles presented more orderly and regular morphology as well as better SERS properties than the unwashed ones. Furthermore, both the concentration and the amount of gold nanoparticles were found to affect its SERS performance. Using the optimized coffee ring as a SERS substrate, trace R6G with a concentration of 5 × 10−8M was detected. This sensing platform could realize aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) detection down to 5 × 10−7M and was demonstrated to function well in real-sample testing. Keywords:coffee ring effect;surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS);aflatoxin B1 detection

In surface enhancement of Raman scattering (SERS) experiments, the absorption of excitation light effectively enhances the electromagnetic field, creating a strong focusing field that amplifies the Raman scattering signal of the target molecules. A hexagonal arrangement of gold nanopore arrays loaded with silver nanoparticles was prepared using nanosphere lithography (NSL), template-stripping, magnetron sputtering deposition, and heating processes. Such substrate demonstrates excellent uniformity and stability. Moreover, by optimizing the gold nanoholes and silver nanoparticles, we adjusted the position of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) on demand and elucidated its underlying mechanism, enabling it to exhibit strong optical absorption properties for the excitation light at 785 nm. We have tested the SERS spectra of various target molecules, and all of them show good performance, and the enhancement factor (EF) can reach 3.05 × 10 7 . This work studied the effect of optical absorption properties of gold nanopore on SERS property and provided vital support for a comprehensive understanding of the SERS mechanism and significantly expands the structural design of SERS substrates. This technology is expected to play an important role in many fields such as industrial monitoring, environmental monitoring and biomedical diagnosis.

In surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection research, the shape, structure, surface modification, and material selection of nanoparticles can significantly impact the SERS intensity. Petal-like gap-enhanced Raman tags (P-GERTs) possess numerous sharp tips and edges, which generate localized electric field enhancements, further amplifying the electric field enhancement effect on neighboring molecules and enhancing the SERS signal. Additionally, the surface of P-GERTs can be modified with functional molecules, enabling their application in the detection of disease biomarkers. Using COVID-19 as an example, the performance of P-GERTs in disease biomarker detection was validated, demonstrating that the signal intensity of this probe can reach 55 times that of regular gold nanoparticles and 36.7 times that of smooth shell gap-enhanced Raman tags (S-GERTs). Furthermore, in combination with magnetically retrievable magnetic bead substrates, the N-protein antigen was specifically detected in a one-step process. N-protein was detected within 15 min using a portable Raman spectrometer. The limit of detection (LOD) for the standard sample was 4.28 pg/mL, and the LOD for the actual throat swab sample system was 25.4 pg/mL. This workflow can be extended to the detection of other biomarkers, making it widely applicable.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has attracted a great deal of interest during the past four decades and emerged as an ultrasensitive optical technique for chemical and biomedical analysis. It is widely accepted that the facile fabrication of SERS substrates with high activity and good reproducibility is of crucial importance for their applications. Herein, we report on a fast and robust method for the synthesis and immobilization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate) (POEGMA) brushes under mild conditions without using any reducing agents. POEGMA brushes of different chain lengths were synthesized directly on silicon wafers by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization with various reaction time. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscope measurements indicated that the AgNPs were firmly and homogeneously embedded into POEGMA brushes. The resulting POEGMA–AgNP hybrid films were employed as SERS substrates for the detection of 4-aminothiophenol, giving rise to an enhancement factor of up to 1.9 × 10 6 . The influence of the POEGMA's chain length on SERS performance was also investigated. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The polarization dependence plays a great impact on the SERS intensities for the surface plasmon coupling between nanoparticle aggregating. In this work, the SERS intensities collected from nanorice heterogeneous dimer or homogeneous dimer on Au, ITO and glass substrates exhibit strong polarization dependence. This result is further analyzed by the simulated surface charge distribution and electromagnetic enhancement distribution. Our data illustrate that SERS polarization dependence exhibits in all gaps in whole system, not only the gaps between nanorices but also gaps between nanorices and film, which could be important for the application of SERS as an ultrasensitive sensing technique.

This paper reports a strategy to get self-assembly of Cu7Te5 nanorods into hierarchical superstructures: the side-by-side self-assembly of nanorods into microscale one-dimensional (1D) nanowires (primary structure), the side-by-side alignments of the 1D nanowires into two-dimensional (2D) nanowire bundles (secondary structure), and the further rolling up of the 2D bundles into three-dimensional (3D) microtubes (tertiary structure). It was found that the oleylamine (OLA)/n-dodecanethiol (DDT) mixture as a binary capping agent was key to produce Cu7Te5 nanorods in the quantum size regime with high monodispersity, and this was a prerequisite for their hierarchical self-assembly based on elaborate control of the solvent evaporation process. The obtained Cu7Te5 microtube superstructures were used as SERS substrate and showed much stronger SERS enhancement than the as-prepared Cu7Te5 nanorods before assembly. This was probably ascribed to the remarkably enhanced local electromagnetic field arising from the plasmon coupling of Cu7Te5 nanorods in the well-assembled superstructures.

Fluorescent-surface enhanced Raman scattering (F-SERS) dual mode tags showed great potential for bioimaging due to the combined advantages of intuitive, fast imaging of fluorescence and multiplex capability of SERS technique. In previously reported F-SERS tags, organic fluorescent dyes or quantum dots were generally selected to generate fluorescence signal. Herein, we reported the first proof-of-concept upconversion fluorescence (UCF)-SERS dual mode tags based on near infrared (NIR) laser (980 nm) excited upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) for live-cell and in vivo imaging. Three components involved in this tag: NaYF4:Yb,Er UCNPs@SiO2 serving as the fluorescent core of the tag; silver nanoparticles in situ grown on the surface of UCNPs@SiO2 for generating characteristic Raman signal; and denatured BSA coating rendering the tag’s stability and biocompatibility. The UCF-SERS tags integrated the NIR imaging capability of both fluorescent UCNPs and plasmonic SERS nanoprobe, which facilitated dual mode bioimaging investigation, especially for living animals. Ex vivo experiments revealed that with 980 nm and 785 nm NIR laser irradiations, the UCF and SERS signals of the tags could be detected from 3 and 7 mm deep pork tissues, respectively. Furthermore, the in vivo imaging capabilities of UCF-SERS tags were successfully demonstrated on living mice. The developed dual modality tags held great potential for medical diagnostics and therapy.

A photoresponsive amphiphilic gold nanoparticle (AuNP) is achieved through the decoration of AuNP with hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and hydrophobic photoresponsive polymethacrylate containing spiropyran units (PSPMA). Owing to the photoresponsive property of spiropyran units, the amphiphilic AuNPs can easily achieve the controllable assembly/disassembly behaviors under the trigger by light. Under visible light, spiropyran units provide weak intermolecular interactions between neighbored AuNPs, leading to isolated AuNPs in the solution. While under UV light irradiation, spiropyran units in the polymer brushes transform into merocyanine isomer with conjugated structure and zwitterionic state, promoting the integration of adjacent AuNPs through π–π stacking and electrostatic attractions, further leading to the formation of Au oligomers. The smart reversible AuNP oligomers exhibited switchable plasmonic coupling for tuning surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity, which is promising for the application of SERS based sensors and optical imaging.

It is important to control drug release and detect the distribution of drug molecules before and after release. In this work, liposome@AgAu nanocomposite is prepared for drug delivery, which not only can control drug release by near infrared laser irradiation but also can monitor drug molecules by surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and fluorescence signal during the release process. The liposome@AgAu core/shell nanocomposite prepared by the galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) shows tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption peaks from visible to near-infrared region and good biocompatibility. Comparing to pure doxorubicin (DOX) molecules, liposome@AgAu nanocomposite loading DOX exhibit lower cytotoxicity by MTT assay. After loading into liposome@AgAu, the fluorescence signal of DOX disappear due to the fluorescence resonance energy transfer from DOX to metals shell. On the contrary, the SERS signal of DOX in liposome@AgAu is obviously increased. Furthermore, the liposome@AgAu nanocomposite shows photothermal conversion ability under resonance laser irradiation. Under 633 nm laser irradiation, the liposome@AgAu nanocomposite loading DOX can release drug molecules for killing cancer cell. Meanwhile, the fluorescence signal from DOX appears after drug release from liposome@AgAu, but the SERS signal is not obvious. Therefore, this nanocomposite can provide a platform for photothermal controllable drug release and optical signal targeting for drug molecules.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are significant environmental contaminants with considerable health risks, emphasizing the need for effective monitoring and identification. On-site detection of PAHs using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) remains challenging due to their weak adsorption on substrates and potential interference from the substrates themselves. To address these challenges, we developed hollow raspberry-like plasmonic nanoaggregates made of functionalized-polystyrene hollow microspheres (HM) decorated with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). These nanoaggregates feature a hydrophobic inner cavity that effectively enriches PAHs, improving detection sensitivity. Through enhanced plasmonic coupling by carefully controlling Au NPs coverage on polystyrene (PS) surfaces, functionalizing the amino groups on the microsphere surface, and fine-tuning the Au NP to PS ratio, our method achieved detection limits of 4 × 10 −8 M for pyrene, 6 × 10 −7 M for fluorene, and 4 × 10 −7 M for benzo[a]anthracene. Moreover, this approach was effectively utilized for detecting PAHs in both Yellow River water and tap water. This study highlights the capabilities of hollow raspberry-like plasmonic nanoaggregates for qualitative and quantitative analysis of PAHs, thereby broadening the use of advanced nanomaterials in monitoring environmental water quality.

The rapid and precise monitoring of peripheral blood miRNA levels holds paramount importance for disease diagnosis and treatment monitoring. In this study, we propose an innovative research strategy that combines the catalytic hairpin assembly reaction with SERS signal congregation and enhancement. This combination can significantly enhance the stability of SERS detection, enabling stable and efficient detection of miRNA. Specifically, our paper-based SERS detection platform incorporates a streptavidin-modified substrate, biotin-labeled catalytic hairpin assembly reaction probes, 4-ATP, and primer-co-modified gold nanoparticles. In the presence of miRNA, the 4-ATP and primer-co-modified gold nanoparticles can specifically recognize the miRNA and interact with the biotin-labeled CHA probes to initiate an interfacial catalytic hairpin assembly reaction. This enzyme-free high-efficiency catalytic process can accumulate a large amount of biotin on the gold nanoparticles, which then bind to the streptavidin on the substrate with the assistance of the driving liquid, forming red gold nanoparticle stripes. These provide a multitude of hotspots for SERS, enabling enhanced signal detection. This innovative design achieves a low detection limit of 3.47 fM while maintaining excellent stability and repeatability. This conceptually innovative detection platform offers new technological possibilities and solutions for clinical miRNA detection. Graphical abstract
