Janus particles exhibit immense potential for applications in the food industry, such as in interfacial stabilization and targeted delivery. However, their practical application is limited by the prevalent issues in existing fabrication methods, including low throughput, poor controllability, and the use of non-food-grade materials. To address the issues, this study developed a sequential solidification strategy based on the confined templates of zein/sodium alginate Janus droplets for the controllable preparation of food-grade Janus particles. The core of this strategy lied in the sequential in-situ solidification of the two independent compartments within the Janus droplet, without disrupting their anisotropic structure. First, the zein compartment within Janus droplets was solidified through riboflavin/hydrogen peroxide/UV-induced tyrosine cross-linking. Subsequently, the sodium alginate compartment within Janus droplets was cross-linked via an external gelation method mediated by calcium chloride droplets. This sequential solidification process successfully replicated the intricate structure of the Janus droplets into solid particles. Furthermore, a gradient energy input method was employed to reduce the Janus droplets to the nanoscale, thus providing ideal nanoconfined templates for the formation of Janus nanoparticles. Therefore, the size of food-grade Janus particles can be directly controlled by the size of confined templates. This work not only develops an efficient and controllable method to fabricate food-grade Janus particles, but also paves the way for their application in food systems.

Fresh walnuts are highly susceptible to microbial spoilage and oxidative browning, primarily due to their elevated moisture and fat content. To address this, an active Janus film (C film), fabricated from gelatin-sodium alginate and zein, was developed. This film provides a sustainable unidirectional moisture barrier and bacteriostatic properties. The active ingredient in C film is cinnamaldehyde (CIN). CIN showed 94.8% encapsulation efficiency in tannic acid nanoemulsions (CIN-Tas). Morphological analysis revealed hydrogen bonding between CIN-Tas and gelatin without significantly altering the film structure. The developed Janus film incorporating CIN-Tas exhibited enhanced thermal stability, antioxidant capacity, and mechanical properties. Water vapor permeability (WVP) values were 4.23×10 -7 and 1.49×10 -7 gPa -1 s -1 m -1 on either side, enabling external moisture barrier and internal moisture absorption. The CIN loaded films exhibited antimicrobial activity (inhibition zones: 3.19 cm against Penicillium cynodontis , 4.77 cm against Penicillium citrinum ). CIN release followed the Korsmeyer-Peppas model, sustaining release for 180 hours. A significant preservation effect was observed in fresh walnut storage experiments using C film coating. The decay rate was decreased by 20.34%. A decrease of 9.68% in malondialdehyde (MDA) content accumulation was recorded. Additionally, the rise in acid value (AV) and peroxide value (POV) was decreased by 25.21% and 7.99%, respectively. These results indicated that this packaging technology effectively inhibits microbial growth and maintains storage humidity, prolonging walnut freshness. It offers promising potential for extending food shelf life.

Urea is widely used in agriculture because of its high nitrogen content and low cost, but its utilization efficiency is often limited by volatilization, leaching, and nitrification-denitrification losses. In this study, sodium alginate (SA) was hydrophobically modified by free-radical grafting with methyl methacrylate (MMA) to obtain SA-PMMA, which was subsequently ionically cross-linked with chitosan (CS) to construct hydrogel carriers for controlled-release urea fertilizers. The resulting materials were characterized by FTIR, XRD, TG-DTG, XPS, and SEM-EDS, confirming successful grafting and indicating interactions between urea and the SA-PMMA/CS matrix. The effects of grafting ratio on water absorption, urea loading, nitrogen release, degradation, and fertilizer performance were systematically investigated. Among the five formulations, sample Z3 exhibited the best overall release behavior, with a cumulative nitrogen release of 77.33% over 56 days, meeting the national standard for slow-release fertilizers. Release-kinetic analysis showed that nitrogen release was best described by the first-order model and was governed by Fickian diffusion. In spinach pot experiments conducted at the same nitrogen input, the hydrogel fertilizers, especially Z3, promoted root development, leaf expansion, chlorophyll a ccumulation, dry matter production, and plant nitrogen uptake compared with conventional urea. These results demonstrate that hydrophobically modified SA/CS hydrogels are promising carriers for improving urea retention, regulating nitrogen release, and enhancing agricultural nitrogen-use efficiency.

The main cause of implant-associated infection (IAI) formation is biofilm formation. Bacterial adhesion serves as the first stage of biofilm formation, and the construction of antibacterial adhesion coatings is an important method to prevent biofilm formation. However, materials that resist bacterial adhesion do not themselves have antimicrobial properties. Meanwhile, the photothermal effect induced by near-infrared (NIR) has a very wide range of application scenarios in the antibacterial field. The high temperature of the coating causes the bacterial membrane to rupture and eventually die, without leading to bacterial drug resistance. It can be used as one of the treatment methods for IAI. Here, we successfully prepared a dual-functional coating on titanium sheets (Ti-CuS@SA) with sodium alginate (SA) as an antibacterial adhesion material and copper sulfide to provide a photothermal effect. First, the introduction of SA greatly reduced the number of E. coli and S. aureus adhesions. Under near-infrared light (NIR-II) irradiation, a small number of bacteria adhering to Ti-CuS@SA were killed, and further bacterial reproduction to form biofilm was effectively inhibited. Therefore, a dual-functional coating with polysaccharides as an anti-adhesion defense for implants coupled with a photothermal agent is an important strategy for the treatment of IAI.

Effective skin moisturization is essential for combating age-related skin deterioration and maintaining overall skin health. This study investigates the development and characterization of DL-α-tocopherol-loaded sodium alginate (SA)-based hydrogel microneedles (MNs) using a polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (PEGDE) crosslinking strategy for sustained, non-invasive antioxidant delivery and enhanced skin hydration. Three hydrogel formulations, SAP1, SAP2 and SAP3, were prepared with varying PEGDE to SA molar ratios, resulting in distinct swelling behaviors and crosslinking densities. SAP1 exhibited the highest swelling ratio, while SAP3 showed the lowest, which influenced the drug release profiles. SAP1α provided the fastest drug release, while SAP3α demonstrated a slowest release. SAP2α was selected for in vivo evaluation based on their balanced DL-α-tocopherol release along with favorable mechanical strength and swelling properties. SAP2α MNs significantly increased skin moisture from 13% to 37% within 8 days, outperforming the control and blank groups. These results show the potential of SA-based hydrogel MNs for transdermal drug delivery for skin rejuvenation and anti-aging. The moisturizing effectiveness of SAP2α MNs suggests their strong clinical potential in dermatology and cosmetic treatments for combating skin aging and dryness.

A biobased hydrogel film was fabricated using sodium alginate and anthocyanin. • The film exhibits sensitive color changes for visual wound infection monitoring. • Antibacterial activity is achieved without additional drugs. • On-demand dissolution triggered by EDTA enables pain-free removal and recycling. Wound status monitoring has emerged as a promising strategy to enable timely intervention for effective wound infection management and promote wound healing. Herein, a recyclable alginate hydrogel film with pH-sensing and antibacterial functions was developed as a smart wound dressing. The hydrogel film (SA-Anth) was fabricated via a two-step process, i.e., an evaporation-induced self-assembly of sodium alginate solution doped with anthocyanin and glycerin, followed by Ca 2+ -mediated ionic cross-linking using CaCl 2 . Taking advantage of the pH-responsiveness of anthocyanin, the hydrogel film exhibited distinct color changes from red-purple at pH 5.0 to violet-blue at pH 7.3 and further to green at pH 9.0, suggesting its potential for visual monitoring of wound pH variations associated with infection. The incorporation of anthocyanin endowed the film with antibacterial activity, achieving bacterial reduction rates of 90.48% against E. coli and 98.10% against S. aureus . The hydrogel film also exhibited wound-dressing-relevant properties, including appropriate physicochemical performance, a low hemolysis ratio, and good in vitro cytocompatibility. In an S. aureus -infected rat full-thickness wound model, SA-Anth treatment enhanced wound closure and improved histological features of tissue repair compared with the control treatments. Furthermore, the de-crosslinking of the ionically crosslinked network was triggered by the addition of EDTA, enabling the recovery of the alginate component. The SA-Anth hydrogel film integrates pH-responsive visual indication, antibacterial activity, favorable biocompatibility, infected-wound repair performance, and EDTA-assisted material recovery, providing a promising platform for intelligent wound-dressing applications.

The aggregation and separation of magnetic biochar (MBC) are the bottlenecks in its application for the removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from aquatic media. To solve this problem, MBC and Fe(II)–sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel were combined to form SA–Fe(II)–MBC beads (SA–Fe–C), which were used for Cr(VI) removal and immobilization from aqueous solutions. SEM and XPS revealed that the 3D network structure of SA–Fe(II) hydrogel effectively prevented the aggregation of MBC. The experimental maximum Cr(VI) removal capacity of SA–Fe–C beads was 30.03 mg/g at pH 4. The spontaneous process of Cr(VI) removal by SA–Fe–C beads was best described by a pseudo-second-order model and dominated by chemical adsorption. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure extraction showed that SA–Fe–C beads exhibited excellent immobilization capacity for Cr. The mechanism whereby SA–Fe–C beads removed and immobilized Cr(VI) from solution was found to involve: (1) adsorption, (2) reduction of Cr(VI) to trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) by Fe(II) and hydroxyl groups, and (3) co-precipitation of Cr(III) with Fe(II) to form chromite. In addition, the beads demonstrated excellent regeneration capability and reusability, showing promising potential for heavy metal removal from contaminated water.

s Insecticides play a crucial role in promoting crop growth and boosting crop yields. However, they also contribute to environmental pollution and pose risk to human health. To increase the utilization rate of insecticides and minimize their pollution of the soil and water environment, it is imperative to develop a green material or carrier for the controlled-release of agrochemicals including insecticides. In this study, composite hydrogel beads were successfully prepared using dialdehyde starch and sodium alginate as green-based raw materials, cystamine dihydrochloride as a cross-linking agent, and meanwhile sodium alginate was ionic cross-linked with calcium ions. As-prepared composite hydrogel beads possess pH/redox dual-responsive properties, enabling the controlled release of the insecticide dinotefuran (DIN). The properties, structure and morphology of the hydrogel beads were comprehensively characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Additionally, the release behavior of DIN from the composite hydrogel beads under various conditions was extensively investigated. The results showed that the incorporation of dialdehyde starch significantly enhanced the encapsulation efficiency of DIN within the hydrogel bead. Moreover, the cumulative release of DIN can be precisely modulated by adjusting the release conditions or environmental stimuli; the release kinetics align with the Korsmeyer-Peppas model well. Specially, DIN release is accelerated under neutral conditions and in the presence of the reducing agent glutathione (GSH). The findings of this work are anticipated to exert a positive influence on agricultural production while also contributing to the alleviation of insecticide-related adverse environmental impacts.

In this work, a novel sodium alginate (SA)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/graphene oxide (GO) hydrogel microspheres were prepared by a simple method. Sodium alginate was physically crosslinked by Ca 2+ ; GO was encapsulated into the composite to strengthen the hydrogels; PVA played a significant role in well dispersing of GO in SA. The SA/PVA/GO (SPG) hydrogels were employed as an efficient adsorbent for removal of Cu (II) and U (VI) from aqueous solution. Batch experiments with the subject of the pH, initial metal ion concentration , competing ions and contact time were investigated. Structure characterization was successfully conducted by FTIR, SEM, EDX, BET and XPS. Furthermore, the sorption kinetics of Cu 2+ and UO 2 2+ followed pseudo-second order model and exhibited 3-stage intraparticle diffusion model. Equilibrium data were best described by Langmuir model and the obtained maximum adsorption capacities of SPG hydrogel microspheres for Cu 2+ and UO 2 2+ were 247.16 and 403.78 mg/g, respectively. The difference in adsorption capacity can be confirmed by the percentage of elements in EDX spectra and the intension of peak of elements in XPS spectra. The SPG sorbent exhibited excellent reusability after 5 adsorption-desorption cycles. All results suggested that the prepared adsorbents could be considered as effective and promising materials for removal of Cu (II) and U (VI) in wastewater.

The use of nanomaterials in seed coating offers great advantages, such as increasing the resistance of seeds to physical damage, promoting seed growth, and delivering essential nutrients to seeds. Herein, a functional seed coating material is obtained by anchoring selenium (Se) nanoparticles on the surface of polydopamine (PDA)-modified halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) using an in-situ synthesis method. The SA/HNTs-PDA@Se (SHPS) coating is obtained by mixing HNTs-PDA@Se with sodium alginate (SA) solution as the film-forming agent. HNTs act as supporter for Se nanoparticles to prohibit their aggregation as well as a controlled release for the Se elements. Wheat seeds are selected as a plant model to be coated, and the coating can be formed using Ca 2+ as interfacial crosslinker. HNTs improve the affinity of the composite coating solution on the smooth surface for seeds, as well as improving the hydrophilicity and mechanical property of the coating film. The composite coating improves the resistance of the seeds to physical damage, and the water absorption and water retention capacity. The SHPS coating does not affect seed germination, but rather improves the development of root systems in coated seeds. Seed coating with a nano-Se increases Se content in wheat leaves to 277.8 μg/kg, and the crop become a Se-enriched crop, which improves the quality of the crop. This work extends the application of natural HNTs in functional seed coating technique, which contributes to the research and development of controlled micronutrient delivery system using nanomaterials and nanotechnology.

Developing sustainable and molecularly selective adsorbents for heavy-metal removal remains a critical challenge in water purification. Herein, we report a green molecular-engineering approach for fabricating aza-crown ether functionalized sodium alginate aerogels (ACSA) capable of highly selective Cu 2+ capture. The aerogels were synthesized via saccharide-ring oxidation, Cu 2+ -templated self-assembly, and reductive amination, enabling the covalent integration of aza-crown ether motifs within a hierarchically porous biopolymer matrix. Structural analyses (FTIR, 13 C NMR, XPS, SEM, TGA) confirmed the in situ formation of macrocyclic N/O coordination sites. Owing to their interconnected porosity and chemically stable framework, ACSA exhibited rapid sorption kinetics following a pseudo-second-order model (R 2 = 0.999) and a Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity of 150.82 mg·g −1 . The material displayed remarkable Cu 2+ selectivity over Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ , and Ni 2+ , arising from the precise alignment between Cu 2+ ionic radius (0.73 Å) and crown-cavity dimensions, synergistic N/O chelation, and Jahn-Teller stabilization. Over four regeneration cycles, ACSA retained more than 80% of its original adsorption capacity, confirming excellent durability and reusability. This saccharide-ring modification strategy eliminates crown-ether leaching and weak anchoring, offering a scalable and environmentally benign route to bio-based adsorbents that combine molecular recognition with structural stability for efficient Cu 2+ remediation and beyond.

High carbohydrate (HC) diets have become a conventional approach in modern aquaculture. However, this feeding strategy frequently compromises the health of high-value economic fish species, which might ultimately impair the farmers’ final profits. Our prior research indicated that Saccharina japonica efficiently reduces harm from HC diets, likely due to its sodium alginate (SA) content. In this study, Monopterus albus were randomly grouped into treatments: a normal diet (20 % carbohydrate, NC), a high carbohydrate diet (32 % carbohydrate, HC), and high carbohydrate diets supplemented with 0.5 % SA (LA). Then our outcomes evinced that LA improves various health-related parameters, including reduction of hepatosomatic index (HSI), serum glucose, triglycerides, and aminotransferase levels, as well as the decrease in hepatic lipid droplets, glycogen, and collagen fiber content. Our transcriptomic analysis on liver tissue showed that detoxification-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were less active in HC group than in NC group. In contrast, DEGs linked to fatty acid synthesis increased in LA group versus HC group. A combined analysis of metagenomics and the short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) profile in the posterior intestinal digesta indicated that LA diets greatly increased concentration of acetic acid. This effect was accompanied by a concurrent reduction in the abundance of the species Marinobacter guineae relative to HC diets. Overall, sodium alginate has demonstrated a substantial enhancement in Monopterus albus’ health by mitigating liver injury and ameliorating intestinal microbiota dysbiosis.
