Investigation on the effects of AlOOH nanoparticles on sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate stabilized o/w emulsion stability for EOR

Han Jia,Hongyan Wu,Xin Wei,Yugui Han,Qiuxia Wang,Jinyong Song,Jiajun Dai,Hui Yan,Dexin Liu

Emulisons stabilized by surfactants have been used in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) for effective profile control and displacement, whereas the lack of long-term stability especially under harsh reservoir conditions limited their wide application. In this study, Pickering emulsions stabilized by sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) and anisotropic slice-like AlOOH nanoparticles were systematically studied. The adsorption of SDBS on AlOOH nanoparticles was confirmed by the measurements of zeta potential and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra. The three-phase contact angle tests were conducted to explore the reason for the double phase inversion of the AlOOH/SDBS stabilized emulsions from o/w to w/o and back to o/w again. The optical microscopy images verified the adsorption mechanism of SDBS on AlOOH nanoparticles at the oil/water interface. It was found that the three-dimensional network structure formed by the micro-flocculated modified AlOOH nanoparticles could prevent coalescence and phase separation, resulting in the enhanced stability of the emulsion. The AlOOH/SDBS stabilized emulsion showed the super tolerances in a wide range of shear rates, temperature and electrolyte concentrations. The core flooding tests and microscopic visualization flooding experiments demonstrated that the AlOOH/SDBS stabilized emulsions significantly improved the tertiary oil recovery (33 % of IOIP) via the enhanced displacement and sweep efficiencies. The present study provides a typical Pickering emulsion with great stability under harsh reservoir conditions for EOR.

Facile synthesis, formation mechanism and thermochromic properties of W-doped VO2(M) nanoparticles for smart window applications

Liangmiao Zhang,Fang Xia,Jianing Yao,Tianli Zhu,Hui Xia,Guang Yang,Bin Liu,Yanfeng Gao

Monoclinic VO2(M) has been considered as one of the most promising materials for fabricating energy-saving smart windows, but its scalable synthesis is still a great challenge. In this work, pure and tungsten (W)-doped VO2(M) nanoparticles (20–50 nm) were prepared by a simple hydrothermal recrystallization method using an amorphous precursor obtained from coprecipitation in a mixed VOSO4 and NaOH solution (pH = 9). The phase transition temperature of the obtained W-doped VO2(M) nanoparticles decreases with increasing W-doping, by −28.4 °C per at% of W in the range of 0–1.1 at%. The mechanism of hydrothermal recrystallization was studied by using ex situ powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and in situ synchrotron radiation-based PXRD. It was found that the hydrothermal synthesis underwent two steps: (1) recrystallization of amorphous precursor to VO2(B) crystals, and (2) allotropic phase transformation from the metastable intermediate VO2(B) to VO2(M). In addition, the fabricated films using VO2(M) with 0.7 at% W-doping showed excellent thermochromic performance, with a suitable phase transition temperature of 42.7 °C, high average luminance transmittance of up to 61.7%, and good solar energy modulation ability of 11.7%, making them a suitable material for efficient and low-cost energy saving smart windows.

Carbon-coated W-doped NiMoN catalysts with enhanced antioxidant properties for robust water electrolysis under fluctuating electricity

Rufei Zhang,Hui Teng,Jinyuan Miao,Jianing Kang,Lili Zhou,Linting Cheng,Zhiqun Bai,Jianwen Zhang,Jia Liu,Yang Tang,Pingyu Wan

For renewable energy-driven water electrolysis, developing low cost, highly active and durable electrocatalysts is essential. Here, we prepared a W-doped NiMoN microcolumn coated with a nitrogen doped carbon layer (W-NiMoN@NC) as an excellent non-precious electrocatalyst. This material displays excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity with low overpotentials of 13 and 67 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm−2, outperforming commercial Pt/C. DFT calculations show that W doping optimizes the water dissociation and H* adsorption processes, improving HER activity. Additionally, W doping coupled with an ultrathin NC coating enhances the intrinsic anti-oxidation ability of NiMoN. After 100 cycles of harsh fluctuating electrolysis, the incremental overpotential of W-NiMoN@NC is only 8 mV at 1000 mA cm−2, significantly less than that of undoped NiMoN@NC (56 mV). The excellent anti-oxidation ability of W-NiMoN@NC resulting from its high reserves of Ni0 was proved by XPS analysis after fluctuating electrolysis. This inside-out strategy endows W-NiMoN@NC with an exceptional feature of long-term durability under harsh fluctuating conditions and a promising potential for application in renewable energy-powered electrolysis.

Effect of ionic liquids on stability of O/W miniemulsion for application of low emission coating products

Yiyang Kong,Binjie Hu,Yanqing Guo,Yifan Wu

Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are non-volatile organic salts. They may replace conventional coalescing agents in latex coating thus reducing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission as well as improving performance of latex coating products such as better thermal stability, conductivity, and antifouling property. The formation of latex coating containing RTILs can be achieved by encapsulation of RTILs inside particles via miniemulsion polymerization. In this study, the role of RTILs and its concentration on stability of miniemulsion during storage and polymerization were investigated. It has been found that, above a critical concentration (10   wt%), adding more RTILs to oil phase may weaken miniemulsion stability during storage as well as polymerization. Such observations were consistent with the zeta potential measurement for miniemulsions prepared at the similar conditions. The results obtained here would be a useful guideline for the development of new waterborne coating products with desirable functions and particle sizes.

Electrochemical Synthesis of a Ni–W–P/Mo Electrode for Highly Efficient and Stable Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Qingxiang Kong,Yulei Li,Hang Ma,Qin Zhao,Linjing Yang,Ruidong Xu,Hong Guo

Hydrogen energy as a new type of clean energy has been widely used. Electrolysis is a highly effective method of producing hydrogen from water. Catalysts with low development costs and high efficiency are the focus of current research. A novel Ni–W–P/Mo catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was synthesized by electrodeposition based on a molybdenum mesh. The experimental results show that when the current density is 10 mA/cm2, the best overpotential of Ni–W–P/Mo in alkaline medium is 75 mV. Not only that, the Tafel slope (77 mV/dec) also proves its excellent dynamic performance. In addition, the 60 h stability test at a current density of 10 mA/cm2 indicates an excellent long-term stability performance. Compared with the catalysts reported in recent years, the HER performance of Ni–W–P/Mo is much better than that of most nonprecious metal catalysts. The uniform and regular molybdenum network provides a large area of support for the catalyst, which is conducive to the synthesis and reaction of the catalyst. By doping W, the electronic structure of the catalyst is regulated, and the water decomposition is promoted. The stability of the morphology is also an important factor in improving the activity of the catalyst. The amorphous catalyst synthesized by the electrodeposition method in this work provides a new idea for the research of catalytic materials for hydrogen production by electrolysis of water and has important significance for promoting the development of a hydrogen energy economy.

Mechanical properties, thermophysical properties, and long-term ablation behaviours of C/C–ZrC– ZrB2– W–Cu composites

Junjie Xu,Wei Sun,Xiang Xiong,Hongbo Zhang,Lingkun Yang

Spacecraft thermal protection materials need to survive long-term exposure to oxygen-containing environments at 2400 °C. In this study, a high-density and low-porosity metal-ceramic-modified composite was prepared at a low temperature (1500 °C) in the presence of W and Cu using combined slurry brushing and reactive melt infiltration methods. An investigation of the composite formation mechanism and the effects of W and Cu indicated that W and ZrB 2 were formed via dissolution-precipitation and the external diffusion of C and B, respectively. The low reaction temperature and the metallic phases significantly improved the mechanical properties, thermophysical properties, and long-term ablation behaviours of C/C–ZrC–ZrB 2 –W–Cu. Compared to traditional C/C–ZrC, the flexural strength and fracture toughness of the composite increased by 71.56 % and 90.05 % to 345.95 MPa and 14.52 MPa m 1/2 , respectively, and the thermal conductivity increased by 174.93 % to 59.11 W/m·K. In addition, W and Cu effectively lowered the surface temperature by nearly 250 °C during 300 s ablation, and the mass and line ablation rates decreased to −0.272 mg/s and −0.247 μm/s, respectively.

Preparation of W-doped titanium lithium ion sieve by hydrothermal method and enhanced adsorption performance for Li+

Wu Mingdong,Wang Shengyu,Jiang Minghong,Lei Zhaoxing,Xiong Shanxin,Chu Jia

Titanium lithium ion sieve (Ti-LIS) has attracted much attention due to their excellent adsorption properties and easy preparation process. In this study, the Li 2 TiO 3 with different doping amounts of W (LTWO) was synthesized by the hydrothermal method. Then, the LTWO was washed with HCl to obtain the adsorbent of W-doped H 2 TiO 3 (HTWO). The structure and adsorption properties of HTWO-4 were tested and the results showed that the introduction of W into HTWO leads to lattice defects, which increase oxygen vacancies and promote Li + diffusion in the adsorbent. The effects of adsorption time, initial Li⁺ concentration, and pH on the adsorption properties of Li⁺ were systematically evaluated. The adsorption process of HTWO was confirmed as chemisorption and monolayer adsorption by simulating the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. Among them, HTWO-4 exhibits a higher adsorption capacity than others, with a value of 34.68 mg/g in a LiCl solution (Li +  = 210 mg/L). Additionally, the HTWO-4 exhibits superior adsorption selectivity of Li + over Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , K + , and Na + , maintaining a high Li + adsorption capacity after five regeneration cycles. This work provides an ideal candidate adsorbent in the field of lithium resource utilization.

The development of environmentally friendly Pr/W Co-doped Bi2MoO6 green pigment with high near-infrared reflectivity

Ruiying Zhai,Yijie Yang,Peilin Lei,Jiahao Lu,Sisi Chen,Xiaoqi Sun

In this article, a green pigment Bi 1.95-x Pr x W 0.05 MoO 6+δ (x = 0.1–0.5) co-doped with Pr and W was developed using high temperature solid-phase synthesis method. The microstructure, color performance, and optical characteristics of the novel pigment was analyzed using x-ray diffraction instrument (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), L∗ a∗ b∗ color date, and ultraviolet–visible–near infrared light spectrophotometer. The results indicate that all the samples possess a monoclinic structure, characterized by the space group P21/c(14). Compared to Bi 2-x Pr x MoO 6+δ doped solely with Pr 6 O 11 , the Pr/W co-doped Bi 2 MoO 6 pigment demonstrates superior green coloration. The solar reflectance in the near-infrared region of all pigment samples exceeds 80 %, highest value reaches 92.82 %. In thermal insulation tests, the temperature difference between the Bi 1.95-x Pr x W 0.05 MoO 6+δ pigment coating and a blank galvanized sheet reaches up to 10.3 °C after 60 min under infrared lamp irradiation. The color difference Δ E∗ of the pigment powder after immersion in acid and alkali solution and high-temperature calcination are less than 5, indicating good chemical stabilities in acidic, alkaline and high-temperature environments. To our knowledge, Bi 1.95-x Pr x W 0.05 MoO 6+δ has the highest reflectivity among green pigments without toxic metals.

Tuning the eg∗ band broadening of the in-situ NiOOH by W doping for efficient biomass electrooxidation

Jinlv Wei,Jianlong Zhang,Huan Wen,Zhixiang Zhai,Fangyuan Guan,Zelong Sun,Jia Wu,Shibin Yin

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural electrooxidation reaction (HMFOR) provides a promising route for producing high-value-added compounds. It is generally believed that NiOOH is the active species in HMFOR process, but its inherently poor electron transfer ability leads to limited catalytic activity. In this work, a W doping strategy is adopted to regulate the electron transfer between NiOOH and reaction molecules. Electrochemical results show that W-doped Ni 5 P 4 -R exhibits excellent electrochemical performance for the oxidation of HMF to FDCA with the conversion of HMF and yield of FDCA both close to ∼100%. Density functional theory and in-situ characterization reveal that the introduction of W causes the distortion of NiOOH lattice, resulting in the Jahn-Teller distortion and the elimination of orbital degeneracy, thereby broadening the e g ∗ band of NiOOH. This feature is beneficial for the electron transfer between W-doped NiOOH and HMF (1.31 e − ), thereby promoting the C–H bond activation of the aldehyde group in HMF and effectively reducing the energy barrier of rate-determining step (RDS).

Modulating band structure of MoO3 via W-doped for enhanced photo-induced charge transfer and SERS detection

Hongwen Cao,Yunpeng Cao,Jia He,Xin Xie,Zhijun Wang,Sen Sun,Rui Zhong,Lei Sun,Yihan Wang,Kun Zhang

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) of MoO 3 semiconductors leverages charge-transfer (CT) pathways to achieve highly sensitive detection of toxic molecules, demonstrating significant potential for multiple applications. However, insufficient CT pathways and efficiencies are key factors limiting the development. In this work, W-doped MoO 3 substrates with different doping ratio were prepared using double-target magnetron sputtering method to increase the CT pathway formation. UV–Vis and UPS analyses indicate that the enhancement of SERS activity was mainly due to the narrowing of the optical bandgap and the optimization of band edge positions, which promoted the formation of photo induced charge transfer pathways. The W-doped MoO 3 substrates significantly elevated the SERS response by several orders of magnitude compared to the original value, achieving an enhancement factor (EF) of CV up to 1.31 × 10 6 . Importantly, the W-doped MoO 3 substrates have proven capable of simultaneously detecting two types of pollutant molecules in river water affected by industrial emissions, highlighting their practical application potential in environmental monitoring.

Highly bioactive, bevacizumab-loaded, sustained-release PLGA/PCADK microspheres for intravitreal therapy in ocular diseases

Jiaxin Liu,Shuang Li,Ge Li,Xiang Li,Changhui Yu,Zhijiang Fu,Xiangyu Li,Lesheng Teng,Youxin Li,Fengying Sun

Bevacizumab, a vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-targeting drug, is widely used as an off-label therapeutic for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). To reduce the monthly administration frequency, this study investigated microspheres comprising a poly( d , l -lactide-co-glycolide)/poly(cyclohexane-1,4-diyl acetone dimethylene ketal) (PLGA/PCADK) blend that could be loaded with bevacizumab-dextran particles using solid-in-oil-in-water (S/O/W) emulsification. Control microspheres were also prepared through water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) emulsification. The structural stability of bevacizumab in the polymer monomers was analyzed using dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), size exclusion chromatography (SEC-HPLC), circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence spectroscopy. Subsequently, microspheres were prepared and evaluated in terms of their morphology, encapsulation efficiency and release behavior. PLGA/PCADK microspheres prepared by the S/O/W method with <20% PCADK showed a smooth spherical structure with a uniform distribution of bevacizumab. The microspheres exhibited a release behavior comprising a slight initial burst and an increasing total release over 50 days both in vitro and in vivo . Additionally, the microspheres were well tolerated by ocular tissue. Finally, a chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay revealed that the bioactivity of bevacizumab was retained by PCADK. In conclusion, these results suggest the potential for bevacizumab-loaded PLGA/PCADK microspheres prepared by the S/O/W method as a means of intravitreal therapy for ocular diseases.

Harnessing hydrogen activation capability and Lewis acidity in bimetallic Mo-W/H-Beta catalysts for enhanced lignin depolymerization

Ajibola T. Ogunbiyi,Wenzhi Li,Amir Hamza,Chenchen Gui,Liqun Wang

Despite significant advances in lignin depolymerization studies, the specific combination of Mo and W in bimetallic catalysts and their impact on hydrogen activation and Lewis acidity in lignin conversion remains poorly understood, particularly in terms of the synergistic effects that enhance efficiency and selectivity. A bimetallic Mo x W y /H-Beta catalyst was synthesized via incipient wetness impregnation with the catalyst characterized using XPS, H 2 -TPR, NH 3 -TPD, and other methods. The catalyst demonstrated high activity for selective kraft lignin depolymerization due to the synergy between Lewis acid sites, hydrogen activation sites, and the Mo-W interaction on the support. The proximity of metal and acid sites facilitated effective diffusion of intermediates, leading to enhanced synergy and the eventual cleavage of etheric C–O bonds. A Liquid fuel (LF) yield of 84.3 % and 71.6 % kraft lignin conversion at 300 °C without external hydrogen. The higher heating value (HHV) increased from 25.45 MJ/kg in the original kraft lignin feed to 35.9 MJ/kg in the LF. XPS analysis showed a predominant amount of Mo 6+ on the fresh catalyst surface, with complete conversion to lower oxidation states during the reaction. This study provides insights into the structure–activity relationships of Mo-based bimetallic catalysts, highlighting the importance of hydrogen activation sites and acidic sites in kraft lignin depolymerization.
