Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction is a promising strategy for achieving carbon neutrality. Nevertheless, its efficiency is limited by the high energy barrier and severe charge recombination. Herein, Cu–WO 3 hollow sphere hybrids, in which Cu is anchored to the O defects of WO 3 , were fabricated to enable efficient photocatalytic conversion of CO 2 to CO. The oxygen defects in WO 3 promote the preferential deposition of Cu, resulting in the simultaneous exposure of Cu–O defect active sites. In the engineered Cu–WO 3 structure, the confined hollow morphology improves CO 2 adsorption and facilitates the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. The Cu–O defect centers effectively reduce the overpotential for CO 2 conversion. Consequently, the synthesized Cu–WO 3 catalyst demonstrates excellent and stable photocatalytic CO 2 reduction activity, achieving a CO production rate of 1518 μL g –1 h –1 in the absence of a sacrificial agent, which is 5.2 times greater than that of pristine WO 3 . This study provides new insights into defect modulation for designing highly efficient photocatalytic materials.

Photochromic materials with rapid, reversible, and controllable color changes are of significant interest for rewritable media. However, conventional systems often suffer from slow bleaching kinetics, complex synthesis procedures, and poor durability. Herein, we report a cost-effective and environmentally benign thermo-erasable photochromic ink prepared via a facile in-situ synthesis strategy. The approach enables the formation of WO 3 nanostructures confined within a polyethylene glycol (PEG) matrix without requiring high-temperature processing or toxic precursors. The resulting composite exhibits efficient photochromic coloration within approximately 1 min under intense UV irradiation and is also capable of coloration under low-intensity illumination (10 W m −2 ). Notably, the reversible crystalline to amorphous phase transition of PEG upon mild heating creates dynamic free volume and diffusion pathways, promoting oxygen penetration and facilitating rapid thermal bleaching within 10 min. The material demonstrates excellent durability exhibiting stable performance over 200 repeated write–erase cycles. The material shows reliable bending robustness on flexible substrates. In addition, applying a thin PDMS over-coating provides effective waterproof protection, allowing the device to maintain stable optical performance during continuous exposure to high-temperature (80 °C) and high-humidity (80 %) conditions for 72 h. This accelerated test corresponds to approximately 1.2 years of operation at 20 % relative humidity, with the maximum coloration loss remaining below 8 %. This integrated design successfully overcomes the limitations of traditional photochromic systems by achieving both long-lasting coloration and actively controllable decoloration. Overall, this work establishes a scalable platform for sustainable, high-performance rewritable optical media based on nanoscale structural engineering and controlled oxidation regulation.

As the extensive application of hydrogen energy , highly sensitive detection of hydrogen is important to prevent the risk of an explosion. To achieve good sensing stability, (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) was used to immobilize Pt/WO 3 on the U-shaped microfiber sensor. The experimental results show that the proposed U-shaped single mode-tapered four core-single mode (STFS) microfiber sensor has good spectrum stability (maximum wavelength perturbation of 0.013 nm over 30 min) and long-term stability (13 days). Furthermore, when the concentration of hydrogen is changed from 0 % to 1 %, the proposed U-shaped STFS microfiber hydrogen sensor shows a high sensitivity of −17.706 nm/% and a good linearity with a linear regression coefficient of 0.996. The developed hydrogen sensor has temperature and RH sensitivities of 0.0114 nm/℃ and 0.006 nm/%RH, respectively, indicating low temperature and RH cross-sensitivity to hydrogen measurement. The proposed U-shaped STFS microfiber sensor and the functionalized method have potential applications in hydrogen detection, prevention of hydrogen-related accidents and other fields.

Tl poisons VTi catalysts by forming stable V-O-Tl bonds at V O active sites. • WO 3 provides steric shielding and acts as a sacrificial trap for Tl species. • WO 3 drives the electronic oxidation of highly toxic Tl + to less harmful Tl 3+ . • Optimized VWTi catalysts retain ~80% NO x conversion under cement kiln flue gas. Thallium (Tl), an extremely toxic and highly volatile heavy metal, has become the primary cause of rapid deactivation of V 2 O 5 /TiO 2 (VTi) SCR catalysts used in cement kilns. Industrial post-operation analyses consistently show exceptional Tl enrichment on catalyst surfaces—often 2–3 orders of magnitude higher than other heavy metals—resulting in a sharp decline in NO x removal efficiency and raising significant environmental and operational hazards. Motivated by real industrial observations that appropriate amounts of WO 3 substantially enhance the Tl tolerance of VTi catalysts, this study provides a mechanistic explanation for both the poisoning pathway and the mitigation effect. We demonstrate that Tl deactivation originates from its strong affinity for V O active sites, where it forms stable V-O-Tl bonds that collapse Lewis acidity, suppress oxygen-vacancy regeneration, and disrupt the V 5+ /V 4+ redox cycle essential for SCR activity. Through multi-scale characterization and DFT analysis, we reveal that WO₃ alleviates Tl toxicity through a dual synergistic mechanism: steric shielding that limits Tl access to vanadium centers, and oxidation of mobile Tl + to less reactive Tl 3+ , thereby weakening its ability to bind and deactivate V sites. This cooperative electronic-structural modulation preserves both acidity and redox functionality under realistic high-Tl exposure. The mechanistic insights presented here offer a rational foundation for developing durable, Tl-resistant SCR catalysts tailored for hazardous flue gas environments in cement and waste-incineration industries.

Hydrogen Sulfide (H 2 S) gas can cause physiological discomfort at low concentrations and is lethal at high concentrations. It is one of the major pollutants in the petrochemical industry. In this article, carbon-modified WO 3 nanoparticle gas-sensitive sensing materials were synthesized using the hydrothermal method, and high-performance H 2 S gas-sensitive sensing devices were fabricated. At a doping ratio of 2:3, the optimal working temperature for the carbon-modified WO 3 (C-WO 3 ) nanoparticles is 160 °C. It exhibits a response value of 23.7 for 10 ppm of H 2 S gas, with a response and recovery time of 6 s/64 s. The material demonstrates excellent selectivity, repeatability, and long-term stability for detecting H 2 S gas. These outstanding performance characteristics make it a promising candidate for H 2 S gas detection applications. This modification enhances the material’s gas-sensing performance and its resistance to interference. Finally, first-principles calculations revealed the mechanism behind the improvement in the H 2 S gas-sensing performance of carbon-modified WO 3 sensing materials.

Direct photocatalytic conversion of methane to formaldehyde (HCHO) provides a sustainable route for methane valorization. However, the exceptional inertness of the C–H bond in methane and the propensity of oxygenated products toward overoxidation have hindered the simultaneous achievement of high selectivity and appreciable productivity. Here, we report a highly efficient photocatalyst comprising metallic Ag nanoparticles anchored on oxygen-vacancy-rich WO3, which delivers a state-of-the-art HCHO yield of 28.5 mmol g–1 for 4 h with an outstanding selectivity of 96.6% under mild photothermal conditions (150 °C). Operando spectroscopic characterizations combined with theoretical calculations reveal that the interfacial synergy between Ag species and oxygen vacancies markedly enhances charge separation and enables the selective activation of CH4 and O2 into •CH3 and •OOH radicals, respectively. Moreover, moderate thermal activation accelerates the reaction kinetics while facilitating rapid HCHO desorption from the catalyst surface, thereby effectively suppressing overoxidation to CO2. This work establishes an effective strategy for selective methane valorization through the rational coupling of interfacial defect engineering and photothermal synergy, providing insights for the design of advanced photocatalytic C1 conversion systems.

Electrocatalytic hydrogen production in neutral electrolytes offers a sustainable pathway toward clean hydrogen, but its development is severely constrained by sluggish reaction kinetics and the lack of high-performance non-noble metal electrocatalysts. Herein, efficient hydrogen production is achieved by integrating heterogeneous structure engineering with iron (Fe) doping, fabricating the Fe-Cu2O/WO3/CF material. Results demonstrate that Fe doping and Cu₂O/WO₃ heterojunction construction exert a synergistic effect in optimizing the catalyst's structural and electronic properties: Fe doping induces lattice distortion, generating abundant oxygen vacancies and coordinatively unsaturated active sites, while the Cu₂O/WO₃ heterojunction accelerates interfacial electron transfer. Electrochemical tests show that Fe-Cu₂O/WO₃/CF exhibits excellent HER activity, requiring overpotentials of 95 mV to achieve current densities of 10 mA·cm⁻² and better long-term stability over 40 hours of continuous operation compared to the undoped counterpart. The significantly enhanced HER performance is comprehensively attributed to the combined contributions of optimized electronic structure, enriched active sites and accelerated charge transfer. Specifically, the cooperative interplay of Cu, Fe, and W with distinct d-band center energies, together with Fe doping-induced electronic modulation, upshifts the d-band center, strengthens the interaction between the catalyst surface and reaction intermediates, and induces the formation of different metal-O bonds for directional electron transfer. Meanwhile, Fe2+ (3d6) in tetrahedral (Cu2O phase) and octahedral (WO3 phase) coordination environments optimizes electron transfer and H* adsorption/desorption behavior via π orbital interactions and electron repulsion with O²-. By exploring the synergistic catalytic activation mechanism of heterojunctions and heteroatom doping, this work provides a theoretical foundation for the rational design of high-efficiency non-noble metal oxide catalysts for neutral water electrolysis.

Tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) is recognized as one of the promising materials for catalyst support. However, its practical application is still restricted by the low specific surface area and the relatively low conduction band level. An efficient hydrothermal and room temperature plasma technique was employed to synthesize WO 3 nanoparticles (designated as WO 3 -Ar), resulting in a higher surface area and the creation of substantial oxygen vacancies on the WO 3 surface. Subsequently, Pd and Ag nanoparticles were deposited onto the WO 3 nanoparticles, which are characterized by a high specific surface area and numerous oxygen vacancies, through hydrogen reduction (PdAg/WO 3 -Ar). Electrochemical tests indicate that the PdAg/WO 3 -Ar catalysts exhibit superior electrocatalytic efficiency compared to the PdAg/C catalyst. The significantly higher electrocatalytic activity is attributed to several factors: (1) The oxygen vacancy defects and the high unique specific surface area of WO 3 -Ar facilitate the anchoring of Pd–Ag nanoparticles and enhance the electrocatalytic performance of Pd–Ag nanoparticles in PdAg/WO 3 -Ar catalysts. (2) A catalyst-support interaction exists between Pd–Ag and WO 3 -Ar, which significantly boosts the catalytic performance of the PdAg/WO 3 -Ar catalyst.

Flame aerosol synthesis is a continuous one-step method to obtain metal oxides. However, production of uniform particle is considered an inherent challenge for flame aerosol synthesis from aqueous solution. It is necessary to fully understand the synthesis route and the essential governing factors to break through the barrier. A series of flames with different temperatures were employed to synthesize WO 3 , CeO 2 and the WO 3 /CeO 2 composite powders. Flame temperature and precursor concentration were investigated to determine the synthesis pathways from aqueous droplet to particle. Size distribution of the powders indicated that they were homogeneous (unimodal) micron particles at low temperature flame process, nanopowders at high temperature, and inhomogeneous (bimodal) particles in between. Two distinct pathways (droplet-particle and droplet-vapor-particle) were generalized from experiments and verified by size statistics. It was the competition between the temperature of flame and the vapor pressure of precursor solute that played an important role on selection of pathways. Based on the different response to temperature, the nanosized WO 3 /CeO 2 mixture and nanoparticle-decorated WO 3 @CeO 2 were designed. Furthermore, this generalized method was applicable for other tungsten oxide nanostructured catalysts, e.g. WO 3 @Al 2 O 3 , WO 3 @ZrO 2 .

The intense photothermal coupling effect generated by concentrating light through Fresnel lenses can efficiently convert CO2 into high-value-added chemicals. However, the extreme high-temperature environment resulting from high photon flux simultaneously causes the agglomeration, sintering, and oxidative deactivation of catalyst powders, thereby limiting the large-scale application of concentrated photocatalytic technology. Here, we constructed a high-temperature-resistant monolithic catalyst by in situ growth of NiO/WO3 nanosheets on the surface of the silica–alumina fiber material (denoted as NiO/WO3/SAF) and applied it to concentrated solar-driven CO2–H2O catalytic conversion. During the concentrated photocatalytic process, NiO/WO3/SAF exhibited superior cycling stability compared to NiO/WO3 powder, which could be attributed to the excellent dispersion, stable anchoring, and thermal insulation effects provided by the SAF support for NiO/WO3. Furthermore, under the assistance of oxygen vacancy-induced photothermal effect in WO3, the high-energy and high-density charge carriers generated by concentrated light facilitated CO2 reduction at electron-rich NiO active sites. Consequently, under concentrated irradiation of 4.0 W·cm–2, NiO/WO3/SAF achieved a solar-to-chemical energy conversion efficiency of 0.37‰, with CO and CH4 yields of 461.7 μmol·g–1·h–1 and 125.7 μmol·g–1·h–1, respectively. This work provides a valuable strategy for the industrial development of solar-driven CO2 utilization.

To address the challenges of weak NO3−adsorption, insufficient active hydrogen supply, and facile desorption of NO2−intermediates in neutral electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR), this study employs laser nano-welding technology to fabricate a Ru/WO3heterojunction, and constructs a Ru/WO3/Cu(OH)2/FC spatially confined electrode using Cu(OH)2nanorod arrays as the support. Laser welding achieves metallurgical-grade bonding between Ru and WO3while retaining oxygen vacancies in WO3. Cu(OH)2promotes NO3−adsorption via electrostatic and Lewis acid interactions, and its nanorod array structure confines NO2−intermediates. In 0.5 M K2SO4+ 50 mM KNO3electrolyte, the electrode delivers an ammonia yield rate of 16.1 mg h−1cm−2and a Faradaic efficiency of 75.8% at −0.8 V vs. RHE, outperforming control groups. Potential-dependent electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) confirms that spatial confinement suppresses NO2−accumulation and optimizes interfacial charge transfer kinetics, providing a new strategy for electrode design in neutral NO3RR.

Electrochromic devices have garnered significant interest owing to their promising applications in smart multifunctional electrochromic energy storage systems (EESDs) and their emerging next-generation electronic technologies. Tungsten oxide (WO3), possessing both electrochromic and pseudocapacitive characteristics, offers great potential for developing multifunctional devices with enhanced performance. However, achieving an efficient and straightforward synthesis of WO3electrochromic films, while simultaneously ensuring high coloration efficiency and energy storage capability, remains a significant challenge. In this work, a low-temperature hydrothermal approach is employed to directly grow hexagonal-phase WO3films on FTO substrates. This process utilizes sorbitol to promote nucleation and rubidium sulfate to regulate crystal growth, enabling a one-step in situ fabrication strategy. To complement the high-performance WO3cathode, a composite PB/SnO2film was designed as the anode, offering improved electrochromic properties and enhanced stability. The assembled EESD exhibited fast bleaching/coloration response and a high coloration efficiency of 101.2 cm2C−1. Furthermore, it exhibited a clear and reversible change in optical properties, shifting from a transparent state to a deep blue color, with a transmittance modulation reaching 81.47%.
