One-Pot, Facile, and Versatile Synthesis of Monolayer MoS2/WS2 Quantum Dots as Bioimaging Probes and Efficient Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Shengjie Xu,Dian Li,Peiyi Wu

In this work, uniform molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 )/tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) quantum dots are synthesized by the combination of sonication and solvothermal treatment of bulk MoS 2 /WS 2 at a mild temperature. The resulting products possess monolayer thickness with an average size about 3 nm. The highly exfoliated and defect-rich structure renders these quantum dots plentiful active sites for the catalysis of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The MoS 2 quantum dots exhibit a small HER overpotential of ≈120 mV and long-term durability. Moreover, the strong fluorescence, good cell permeability, and low cytotoxicity make them promising and biocompatible probes for in vitro imaging. In addition, this work may provide an alternative facile approach to synthesize the quantum dots of transition metal dichalcogenides or other layered materials on a large scale.

Facile synthesis of two-dimensional MoS2/WS2 lateral heterostructures with controllable core/shell size ratio by a one-step chemical vapor deposition method

Sun Baofan,Chen Jiajun,Zhou Xinyi,Liu Min,Wu Yaping,Xia Yuanzheng,Li Xu,Wu Zhiming,Kang Junyong

Heterostructures based on two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) possess unique electronic and optical properties, which open up unprecedented opportunities in nanoscale optoelectronic devices. Synthesizing high-quality 2D TMDC heterostructures with different core/shell size ratios is of great significance for practical applications. Here, we report a simple one-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method for fabricating MoS 2 /WS 2 lateral heterostructures with controllable core/shell size ratio. An ultrathin MoO 3 /WO 3 film prepared by thermal evaporation was used as the precursor, and a step-like heating process was adopted to separately grow MoS 2 and WS 2 monolayers by taking advantage of the different melting points of MoO 3 and WO 3 sources. High-quality MoS 2 /WS 2 lateral heterostructures with sharp interfaces were fabricated by optimizing the key growth parameters. Furthermore, the core/shell size ratio of heterostructures could be easily controlled by changing the thickness ratio of MoO 3 /WO 3 film, and an approximately linear dependence between them is revealed. Compared with MoS 2 or WS 2 monolayers, the MoS 2 /WS 2 heterostructure exhibited a shortened exciton lifetime owing to the type-II energy band alignment, which is conducive to the application of high-performance devices. This work provides a facile strategy for the synthesis of 2D lateral heterostructures with controllable size ratio.

Preparation and Characterization of Chiral Transition-Metal Dichalcogenide Quantum Dots and Their Enantioselective Catalysis

Huan Zhang,Hui He,Xuemei Jiang,Zhining Xia,Weili Wei

Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) had attracted enormous interests owing to their extraordinary optical, physical, and chemical properties. Herein, we prepared for the first time a series of chiral TMD quantum dots (QDs) from MoS2 and WS2 bulk crystals by covalent modification with chiral ligands cysteine and penicillamine. The chiral TMD QDs were carefully investigated by spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Their chiral optical activity was confirmed by distinct circular dichroism signals different to those of the chiral ligands. Interestingly, with the assistance of copper ions, the chiral QDs displayed strong and chiral selective peroxidase-like activity. Up to now, inorganic nanomaterials with peroxidase-like activity were tremendous but seldom examples with enantioselectivity. The enantioselectivity of our chiral TMD QDs toward chiral substrates d- and l-tyrosinol was highly up to 6.77, which was almost the best performance ever reported. The mechanisms of enantioselectivity was further investigated by quartz crystal microbalance assays. We believed that because of the extraordinary electronic and optical properties, the chiral TMD QDs should be useful for nonlinear optical materials, asymmetric catalysis, chiral and biological sensors, and so on.

Large surface and pore structure of mesoporous WS2 and RGO nanosheets with small amount of Pt as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution

Zhuo Guo,Tianshuai Sun,Yahui Li,Hailan Kang,Yuhan Che,Yan Zhang,Jinlin Lu

In this work, mesoporous WS 2 with high surface area was prepared by hard template method . First, a one-step nanocasting generates metal precursor@mesoporous silica SBA-15 composites. A hydrothermal method is subsequently adopted to convert the precursors to sulfides in the confined nanochannels . After etching silica SBA-15, mesoporous layered metal sulfide crystals were obtained as the products. Then, we have put forward a new catalyst based on mesoporous WS 2, RGO nanosheets and Pt nanoparticles as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution . The Pt/WG-2 nanostructure electrocatalyst in this report exhibits excellent performance with a small Tafel slope of 47 mV dec −1 , long-term durability and an overpotential of 95 mV in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER).

Rational and green synthesis of novel two-dimensional WS2/MoS2 heterojunction via direct exfoliation in ethanol-water targeting advanced visible-light-responsive photocatalytic performance

Shengda Luo,Shuying Dong,Chen Lu,Chongfei Yu,Yiwen Ou,Lan Luo,Jingyu Sun,Jianhui Sun

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) and their heterostructures have by far stimulated growing research interests in the field of optoelectronics and photocatalysis . In this regard, scalable fabrication of 2D TMDs at an environmentally-benign and cost-effective manner via liquid phase exfoliation is a particularly fascinating concept. Herein we report a facile and green strategy to produce few-layered WS 2 suspensions at a large scale by a direct exfoliation of commercial WS 2 powders in water-ethanol mixtures. In turn, by making full use of the features of 2D layered WS 2 , a novel 2D WS 2 /MoS 2 composite was constructed for the first time via an in-situ hydrothermal reaction to grow MoS 2 nanoflakes onto few-layered WS 2 basal planes. The as-obtained WS 2 /MoS 2 heterostructure was investigated for photocatalytic applications. Such a hybrid material demonstrated superior photocatalytic activity in the photocatalysis of organic dye molecules relative to that of pristine 2D WS 2 , MoS 2 and their physical mixtures. This enhancement was associated with the 2D WS 2 /MoS 2 heterostructuring effect. In addition, comparisons of the photocatalytic performances of our heterojunctions with those of recently reported 2D TMD-based hybrid materials manifested a significantly higher efficiency.

Preparation of MoS2/WS2 nanosheets by liquid phase exfoliation with assistance of epigallocatechin gallate and study as an additive for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries

Hang Zhao,Hao Wu,Jinhua Wu,Jianlong Li,Yujie Wang,Yun Zhang,Heng Liu

The two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides have wide application value in many fields. Herein, MoS 2 and WS 2 nanosheets are produced by liquid phase exfoliation method assisted by epigallocatechin gallate . The effects of epigallocatechin gallate concentration and stripping time are investigated by UV–vis. The morphology and structure characterization of exfoliated nanosheets are studied by XRD , Raman, SEM, HRTEM and AFM , the results showing that the nanosheets have few layers and the exfoliated solution is homogeneous dispersion and stable. The exfoliated nanosheets produced by 2 mg ml −1 epigallocatechin gallate solution for 12 h have five monolayers approximately, presenting a phase transformation from 2H to 1T structure of MoS 2 nanosheets. Then, Graphene aerogel composites are prepared with the exfoliated MoS 2 /WS 2 nanosheets, which loaded sulfur and employed as the cathode of Li-S batteries. TEM results reveal that MoS 2 /WS 2 nanosheets are embedded in reduced graphene oxide , and sulfur is evenly distributed in the composites. The composites containing MoS 2 /WS 2 nanosheets achieve outstanding electrochemical performance , during to the polysulfide adsorption capability of MoS 2 /WS 2 nanosheets and reducing the shuttle effect in Li-S batteries. It demonstrates a good application of exfoliated MoS 2 /WS 2 nanosheets in Li-S batteries.

Effects of WS2 on microstructural characteristics and corrosion behavior of Ni-W and Ni–W/CrN composite coating electrodeposited continuously from a dilute citrate-based electrolyte

Baosong Li,Weiwei Zhang,Yingjie Liu,Zhenghong Xu,Yanjie Wang,Bo Chen

Ni–W/WS 2 and Ni–W/CrN–WS 2 composite coatings were fabricated via continuous electrodeposition from a dilute citrate-based electrolyte containing varying concentrations of WS 2 nanoparticles. The influences of WS 2 content on the surface morphology, elemental composition, phase structure, surface roughness, chemical valence states and corrosion behavior were systematically explored. The results demonstrate that the incorporation of WS 2 nanoparticles refines the grain structure, reduces surface roughness, suppresses particle agglomeration, and promotes the formation of a denser and more homogeneous microstructure. When the concentration of WS 2 exceeds 8 g L −1 , WS 2 particles induce agglomeration and increase internal defects within the coating, thereby impairing its structural compactness and corrosion resistance. XRD and XPS analyses confirm that CrN and WS 2 are successfully co-deposited into Ni–W coating without changing the primary chemical states of Ni, W, Cr, N and S. AFM measurements reveal that 6 g L −1 WS 2 effectively reduces the surface roughness, which is beneficial to the improvement of tribological properties. EIS results demonstrate that 1 g·L −1 WS 2 significantly enhances the anti-corrosion property of Ni–W/WS 2 deposit with the highest R p 123.78 kΩ·cm 2 ( R c 64.47 plus R ct 59.21 kΩ·cm 2 ), forming a reliable physical barrier against corrosive media. In contrast, for the dual-particle synergistic strengthening phase of CrN–WS 2 , the anti-corrosion property of Ni–W/CrN–WS 2 coating is gradually improved as the addition amount of WS 2 increases, reaching the optimal performance at 8 g·L −1 . The corrosion resistance of the Ni–W/CrN–WS 2 coating improves as the WS₂ concentration rises, peaking when the WS₂ concentration is 8 g·L⁻¹ . The synergistic effect of CrN ceramic particles and WS 2 solid lubricant optimizes the microstructure and anti-corrosion performance of Ni–W composite coatings. These composite coatings demonstrate significant potential as corrosion-protective coatings in aggressive service environments, including marine environment and oil–gas pipeline systems.

Decrease in Tumor Interstitial Pressure for Enhanced Drug Intratumoral Delivery and Synergistic Tumor Therapy

Yihan Fu,Fei Ye,Xuwu Zhang,Yuchu He,Xiaoyu Li,Yongfu Tang,Jing Wang,Dawei Gao

Currently, one of the main reasons for the ineffectiveness of tumor treatment is that the abnormally high tumor interstitial pressure (TIP) hinders the delivery of drugs to the tumor center and promotes intratumoral cell survival and metastasis. Herein, we designed a “nanomotor” by in situ growth of Ag2S nanoparticles on the surface of ultrathin WS2 to fabricate Z-scheme photocatalytic drug AWS@M, which could rapidly enter tumors by splitting water in interstitial liquid to reduce TIP, along with O2 generation. Moreover, the O2 would be further converted to reactive oxygen species (ROS), accompanied by increased local temperature of tumors, and the combination of ROS with thermotherapy could eliminate the deep tumor cells. Therefore, the “nanomotor’’ could effectively reduce the TIP levels of cervical cancer and pancreatic cancer (degradation rates of 40.2% and 36.1%, respectively) under 660 nm laser irradiation, further enhance intratumor drug delivery, and inhibit tumor growth (inhibition ratio 95.83% and 87.61%, respectively), and the related mechanism in vivo was explored. This work achieves efficiently photocatalytic water-splitting in tumor interstitial fluid to reduce TIP by the nanomotor, which addresses the bottleneck problem of blocking of intratumor drug delivery, and provides a general strategy for effectively inhibiting tumor growth.

Phase-engineered synthesis of atomically thin te single crystals with high on-state currents

Zhou Jun,Zhang Guitao,Wang Wenhui,Chen Qian,Zhao Weiwei,Liu Hongwei,Zhao Bei,Ni Zhenhua,Lu Junpeng

Multiple structural phases of tellurium (Te) have opened up various opportunities for the development of two-dimensional (2D) electronics and optoelectronics. However, the phase-engineered synthesis of 2D Te at the atomic level remains a substantial challenge. Herein, we design an atomic cluster density and interface-guided multiple control strategy for phase- and thickness-controlled synthesis of α -Te nanosheets and β -Te nanoribbons (from monolayer to tens of μm) on WS 2 substrates. As the thickness decreases, the α -Te nanosheets exhibit a transition from metallic to n-type semiconducting properties. On the other hand, the β -Te nanoribbons remain p-type semiconductors with an ON-state current density (I ON ) up to ~ 1527 μA μm −1 and a mobility as high as ~ 690.7 cm 2 V −1 s −1 at room temperature. Both Te phases exhibit good air stability after several months. Furthermore, short-channel (down to 46 nm) β -Te nanoribbon transistors exhibit remarkable electrical properties (I ON  = ~ 1270 μA μm −1 and ON-state resistance down to 0.63 kΩ μm) at V ds  = 1 V.

A novel molecularly expanded covalent triazine framework heterojunction with significantly enhanced molecular oxygen activation and photocatalysis performance under visible light

Yuxuan Shao,Dan You,Yuqi Wan,Qingrong Cheng,Zhiquan Pan

The activation capacity of molecular oxygen is an important indicator to evaluate the photocatalytic efficiency of photocatalysts. In this paper, WS2 nanosheet was deposited on hyper-crosslinked CTF-1-G (obtained by molecular expansion from covalent triazine framework CTF-1) to form a C-GW heterojunction, which promoted the photodegradation of pollutants and the activation of molecular oxygen. This novel C-GW heterojunction exhibited excellent degradation property for organic pollutants (tetracycline (TC), rhodamine B (RhB)) and activating molecular oxygen under visible light irradiation. Among them, C-GW15 could degrade 98% of 20 ppm TC in 60 min and 99% of 30 ppm RhB in 30 min, and it had the highest hydrogen generation rate and hydrogen production amount in 4 hours, which were 8.74 mmol h−1 g−1 and 34.94 mmol g−1, respectively. Meanwhile, C-GW15 had the strongest 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine oxidation capacity and could generate 1.83 μmol of ˙O2− in 60 min and the production of H2O2 was 20.8 μmol L−1 in 40 min. The results of this study clearly indicated that the combination of WS2 and CTF-1-G can enhance the visible light absorption capacity and photogenerated carrier separation efficiency, thus promoting the photocatalytic performance. Finally, a Z-type photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on radical capture, molecular oxygen activation experiments and electron spin resonance analysis. These findings will extend the fundamental understanding of the Z-type photocatalytic mechanism and provide new opportunities for the rational design of CTF heterojunctions for the treatment of environmental pollution and clean energy conversion.

The nanomaterial-induced bystander effects reprogrammed macrophage immune function and metabolic profile

Peng Yuan,Xiangang Hu,Qixing Zhou

Bystander effects in biological systems are the responses shown by nontargeted neighboring cells, and critical to the bio-nano interface interactions. In addition to direct effects, bystander effects also determine the design, applications and safety of nanomaterials, although the related information of nanomaterial-induced bystander effects remain largely unknown. A coculture system of A549 and THP-1 was established to mimic the lung microenvironment to study the bystander effects of WS2 nanosheets (representative transition-metal dichalcogenide nanosheets) on microenvironment macrophages during the inhalation exposure or the nanomaterial biomedical application in the lung. Lung cells exposed to WS2 nanosheet resulted in an increase in reactive oxygen species and the depolarization of mitochondrial membrane potential in neighboring macrophages. Bystander exposure also induced macrophage polarization toward the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype, which is adverse to disease therapy. Metabolomics showed that WS2 nanosheets disturbed the energy metabolism and amino acid metabolism of macrophages, consistent with the metabolic characteristics of M2 macrophages. Nitric oxide-transforming growth factor-β1 played an important mediator in the bystander effects. Importantly, WS2 nanosheet bystander exposure affected macrophage phagocytosis and migration and altered the macrophage immune response to endotoxin. This study improves the current understanding of bio-nano interactions and highlights the importance of neighboring cell responses, allowing us to use the maximum benefits of nanomaterials while limiting their adverse bystander effects.

Vacancies on 2D transition metal dichalcogenides elicit ferroptotic cell death

Xu Shujuan,Zheng Huizhen,Ma Ronglin,Wu Di,Pan Yanxia,Yin Chunyang,Gao Meng,Wang Weili,Li Wei,Liu Sijin,Chai Zhifang,Li Ruibin

Sustainable developments of nanotechnology necessitate the exploration of structure-activity relationships (SARs) at nano-bio interfaces. While ferroptosis may contribute in the developments of some severe diseases (e.g., Parkinson’s disease, stroke and tumors), the cellular pathways and nano-SARs are rarely explored in diseases elicited by nano-sized ferroptosis inducers. Here we find that WS 2 and MoS 2 nanosheets induce an iron-dependent cell death, ferroptosis in epithelial (BEAS-2B) and macrophage (THP-1) cells, evidenced by the suppression of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), oxygen radical generation and lipid peroxidation. Notably, nano-SAR analysis of 20 transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) disclosures the decisive role of surface vacancy in ferroptosis. We therefore develop methanol and sulfide passivation as safe design approaches for TMD nanosheets. These findings are validated in animal lungs by oropharyngeal aspiration of TMD nanosheets. Overall, our study highlights the key cellular events as well as nano-SARs in TMD-induced ferroptosis, which may facilitate the safe design of nanoproducts.
