Zn2+- and Mn4+-Codoped K2LiB1–xB′xF6 (B, B′ = Al, Ga, In) Fluorescent Nanoparticles: Implications for Micro-LED Color Conversion and Anticounterfeiting Inks

Yuhuan Tan,Yiran Yang,Shiyan Li,Zixiong Yao,Shixun Lian,Pengyan Fu,Wenli Zhou

To address issues such as uneven particle size, agglomeration, low luminescence efficiency, and poor stability in the nanosizing of Mn4+-doped fluoride red phosphors, this study combines solid solution engineering and aliovalent charge compensation to prepare high-performance K2LiB1–xB′xF6:Mn4+ (B, B′ = Al, Ga, In) nanoparticles (FNPs). Using an HF-free coprecipitation method for the synthesis of solid-solution matrices, followed by a ligand-assisted reprecipitation step that employs a small amount of HF to dissolve K2MnF6 to rapidly and uniformly incorporate Mn4+ into the matrices, and the particle size is reduced from 33.32 to 16.05 nm with improved dispersibility by adjusting the volume ratio of oleic acid (OA) to oleylamine (OAm) ligands; through the gradual solid solution of Al3+, Ga3+, and In3+, the regulatory mechanism of lattice distortion and local crystal field on luminescence is revealed, with optimal luminescence intensity achieved at specific solid-solution ratios and the emission peak blue-shifted from 636 to 632 nm. Zn2+ codoping for charge compensation enhances the luminescence intensity of the 0.9% Mn4+-doped sample by 120%, with the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) increased to 40.01%, and the fluorescence lifetime extended to 4.11 ms. The FNPs have good thermal stability (56% retention at 150 °C) and moisture resistance (85% retention after 240 h in water). Packaged white light-emitting diode (WLED) exhibits a luminous efficacy of 20.54 lm W–1, and the fluorescent ink enables red–green anticounterfeiting display under UV excitation, providing insights into applications in high-end display and lighting fields, especially micro-LED color conversion layers, WLED packaging, and anticounterfeiting/encryption inks.

Synthesis and biological evaluation of novel 8- substituted sampangine derivatives as potent inhibitor of Zn2+-Aβ complex mediated toxicity, oxidative stress and inflammation

Ren-ren Xie,Chun-ling Su,Wei Li,Xiao-Yan Zou,Yu-si Chen,Huang Tang

A series of 8-substituted sampangine derivatives have been designed, synthesized and tested for their ability to inhibit cholinesterase and penetrate the blood–brain barrier. Their chelating ability toward Zn 2+ and other biologically relevant metal ions was also demonstrated by isothermal titration calorimetry. The new derivatives exhibited high acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity, high blood–brain barrier penetration ability and high chelating selectivity for Zn 2+ . Moreover, compound 10 with the strongest binding affinity to Zn 2+ was selected for further research. Western blotting analysis, transmission electron microscopy, DCFH-DA assay and paralysis experiment indicated that compound 10 suppressed the formation of Zn 2+ -Aβ complexes, alleviated the Zn 2+ induced neurotoxicity and inhibited the production of ROS catalyzed by Zn 2+ in Aβ42 transgenic C. elegans . Furthermore, compound 10 also inhibited the expressions of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as NO, TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β, induced by Zn 2+ + Aβ 1-42 in BV2 microglial cells. In general, this work provided new insights into the design and development of potent metal-chelating agents for Alzheimer’s disease treatment.

Fabrication of mesoporous La3Ga5GeO14:Cr3+,Zn2+ persistent luminescence nanocarriers with super-long afterglow for bioimaging-guided in vivo drug delivery to the gut

Dong-Dong Zhang,Jing-Min Liu,Nan Song,Yao-Yao Liu,Meng Dang,Guo-Zhen Fang,Shuo Wang

Infection by pathogens has always been a major threat to human health, and various drugs have been explored and designed to kill pathogens in the past decades. However, pathogens are evolving faster than the development of new antibiotics, and increasing doses are resulting in increasing side effects and toxicity; this has prompted us to exert effort toward the development of advanced drug carriers for precise delivery of antibiotics. In this study, with the involvement of persistent luminescence nanophosphors (PLNPs) as the emission core, we propose an antibiotic nanocarrier for in vivo delivery of vancomycin to intestinal bacteria via bioimaging guidance. The synthesized PLNPs were coated with mesoporous silica for vancomycin adsorption (NPs@SiO2@Van) and used as an efficient nanocarrier for direct vancomycin delivery and in vivo imaging with low cytotoxicity toward MC38 cell lines. Additionally, we detected the luminescence signals of NPs@SiO2@Van during their use as nanocarriers for vancomycin and accurately obtained the biodistribution of NPs@SiO2@Van in situ and in real time with neglectable auto-fluorescence from the animal body. For the first time, bioimaging-guided in vivo drug delivery to gut bacteria was realized in the present work. The outstanding luminescence features and excellent biocompatibility and structural stability of PLNPs may open new horizons in the development of nanocarriers for nano-diagnosis/therapy and in vivo studies of intestinal microorganisms.

Double Modification of Poly(urethane-urea): Toward Healable, Tear-Resistant, and Mechanically Robust Elastomers for Strain Sensors

Guoxian Zhang,Chunmei Li,JiaoJun Tan,Mingqi Wang,Zongxu Liu,Yafeng Ren,Ying Xue,Qiuyu Zhang

Polyurethane elastomers with mechanical robustness, tear resistance, and healing efficiency hold great potential in wearable sensors and soft robots. However, achieving excellent mechanical properties and healable capability simultaneously remains highly desirable but exclusive. Herein, we propose a straightforward procedure for double modification of poly(urethane-urea) (PUU) via thiolactone chemistry, and two different dynamic cross-linking bonds (disulfide linkages and Zn2+/imidazole coordination) are successively incorporated into the side chain of PUU, producing double cross-linking elastomers (PUU–I/Zn–S). The synergy between disulfide linkages and Zn2+/imidazole coordination forms a robust and dynamic network, endowing PUU–I/Zn–S with excellent mechanical and healing properties. The tensile stress, elongation at break, and toughness of the resultant elastomer can reach 44.06 MPa, 1000%, and 181.93 MJ m–3, respectively. Meanwhile, PUU–I/Zn–S exhibits outstanding tearing resistance with a tearing energy of 42.1 kJ m–2. The PUU–I/Zn–S can restore its mechanical robustness after self-healing at room temperature (25 ± 2 °C) or 60 °C and even maintain 91% of its original tensile strength after reprocessing two times. Additionally, PUU–I/Zn–S-based strain sensors are fabricated by introducing conductive nanofillers and demonstrate remarkable sensing capability to diverse human body motions. This work demonstrates a simple and feasible method for the postfunctionalization and enhancement of polyurethane and provides some insights into reconciling the traditional contradictory properties of mechanical robustness and healing efficiency.

Uniform Zn2+ Flux Distribution Achieved by an Artificial Three-Dimensional Framework: The Enhanced Ion-Transfer Kinetics for Long-Life and Dendrite-Free Zn Anodes

Yue-Ming Li,Wen-Hao Li,Wan-Yue Diao,Fang-Yu Tao,Xing-Long Wu,Xiao-Ying Zhang,Jing-Ping Zhang

Zinc metal has been naturally considered as the most anticipated anode material for zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), given the benefits of large volume specific capacity, low electrode potential, and inexpensive cost. However, the growth of zinc dendrites and the corrosion of hydrogen evolution during the Zn2+ ion deposition process are the bottlenecks restricting the large-scale application of zinc metal. Herein, we report the modification of zinc anodes by utilizing a ball-milling clay precipitate (designated as BMC, consisting of the unetched MAX phase and the Ti3C2Tx phase) to construct a three-dimensional (3D) framework on the surface of zinc foil (Zn@BMC). Different from the close stacking of conventionally prepared MXene sheets after film formation, the BMC coating firmly adheres to the zinc surface through the binder. The abundant internal space relieves the stress during the volume change of the Zn metal and uniformizes the Zn2+ ion flux. Consequently, Zn@BMC not only achieves a stable long cycle (2000 h, 0.5 mA h cm–2) but also inhibits the side reaction of hydrogen evolution by physically separating the electrolyte and the zinc metal anode. We reckon that our research will aid in clarifying the design principles governing the interface of the zinc metal anode in ZIBs.

Synthesis and photoluminescence properties of novel red-emitting phosphor SrAl3BO7:Mn4+ with enhanced emission by Mg2+/Zn2+/Ca2+ incorporation for plant growth LED lighting

Yuan Zhong,Nan Zhou,Mao Xia,Yue Zhou,Hongxi Chen,Zhi Zhou

Indoor cultivation has attracted more and more concerns in the last few years. Searching for ideal red-emitting phosphors for this application has been a great challenge. In this paper, a novel red-emitting phosphor SrAl 3 BO 7 :Mn 4+ (SABO:Mn 4+ ) had been synthesized through a modified hydrothermal reaction method for the first time. Three kinds of effect parameters, including hydrothermal reacting time, sintering temperature and Mn 4+ doping concentration, were comprehensively considered to optimize the phase purity and luminescent properties of the SABO:Mn 4+ phosphor. Besides, the luminescent properties of SABO:Mn 4+ was systematically investigated through UV–vis absorption spectra , PLE and PL spectra, CIE chromaticity coordinate and decay times. The excitation band of this phosphor locates in the wavelength range of 250–550 nm, resulting from Mn 4+ → O 2− charge transfer and electron transitions from 4 A 2 – 4 T 1 , 2 T 2 and 4 T 2 energy levels. Meanwhile, a sharp emission band is detected from 600 to 700 nm with two emission peaks located at 648 and 662 nm, which is assigned to 2 E → 4 A 2 characteristic transition of Mn 4+ . In addition, Mg 2+ /Zn 2+ /Ca 2+ are co-doped as charge compensators to improve the luminescent properties of SABO:0.03Mn 4+ . The impacts of doping concentration of Mg 2+ /Zn 2+ /Ca 2+ on the photoluminescent intensity, QE and thermal stability of SABO:0.03Mn 4+ phosphor is investigated carefully. The corresponding mechanism is discussed via decay times, EPR spectra and configurational coordinated diagram. More importantly, the EL spectrum of as-fabricated pc-LED device matches well with the absorption of plant pigments, demonstrating this novel phosphor can regard as a promising red-emitting luminescent material to meet the light requirement in plant growth LED lighting.

A water-soluble fluorescent probe derived from fish collagen peptides for multi-targeted detection of Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions via AIE and ESIPT mechanisms

Wenyu Guo,Yuanyuan Zhang,Yunxuan Wang,Zhijun Hu,Peixuan Xu,Jingying Cai,Peirong Yu,Shiya Chen,Lei Zhang,Benmei Wei,Juntao Zhang,Sheng Li,Haibo Wang,Lingyun Chen

Peptides, which are hydrolysis products of proteins, are commonly utilized as nutritional supplements in food due to their high bio-safety profile. In this study, we present a novel water-soluble fluorescent probe derived from fish collagen peptides, termed Sali-Pep. This probe exhibits light green fluorescence, characterized by both aggregate-induced-emission (AIE) and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanisms, with emission peaks at 480 nm and 522 nm. Furthermore, Sali-Pep demonstrates a high sensitivity towards Cu 2+ ions via a “turn-off” fluorescence mechanism, and towards Zn 2+ ions through a “turn-on” fluorescence mechanism, both in a dose-dependent manner. The detection limits of Sali-Pep were 1.49 × 10 −7  M for Cu 2+ and 4.23 × 10 −7  M for Zn 2+ , respectively. In real environmental and biological samples, the recoveries of Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ ions ranged from 91.14 % to 108.61 %. These findings indicate that Sali-Pep is a promising fluorescent probe for the detection of Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ ions, combining both high biosafety and low environmental risk. Additionally, this study also show that collagen-derived peptides have the potential to serve as AIE sensing platforms for metal ion detection and fluorescent labeling.

Spontaneous In Situ Surface Alloying of Li-Zn Derived from a Novel Zn2+-Containing Solid Polymer Electrolyte for Steady Cycling of Li Metal Battery

Zhen Zeng,Shang Wang,Jun Cheng,Guangmei Hou,Deping Li,Guifang Han,Lijie Ci

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are preferable in the pursuit for developing high-energy Li metal batteries due to their inherent flexibility and intimate contact with electrodes. However, continuous interfacial parasitic reactions and undesired Li dendrite growth caused by inhomogeneous plating/stripping of Li+ result in rapid deterioration of an SPE/Li interface. Herein, a novel Zn2+-containing SPE (SPE-xZn) with anionic groups partially tethered on the polymer chains is developed to meet these challenges. During cycling, Zn2+ cations inside the SPE-xZn will gradually migrate to the surface of a Li electrode and then evolve to a Li-Zn alloy layer, where Li+ can diffuse more efficiently. Meanwhile, owing to the electrostatic interaction, the immobilized anionic groups within SPE-xZn can alleviate local concentrated Li+ flux. The synergistic effects of an in situ formed alloy layer and unique macromolecular structure can promote uniform plating/stripping of Li, thus yielding a more stable SPE-xZn/Li interface. Therefore, steady cycling over 300 h at 0.2 mA cm–2 is achieved by Li/SPE-5Zn/Li, and an impressive capacity retention of 87.3% at 0.5 C after 800 cycles is realized by LFP/SPE-5Zn/Li with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.90%.

The enhanced separation effect of synthesized hydroxyapatite incorporated with ethylenediamine-tetramethylene phosphonic acid for Zn2+ and Co2+ ions and the deep insight into mechanism

Zhiren Zhao,Keren Lu,Guangwei ji,Hongling Zhang,Jin Cui,Cuiyun Bai,Xuetao Zhao,Fengyun Wang,Mingzhu Xia,Yanru Zhang

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) incorporated with ethylenediaminetetramethylene phosphonic acid (EDTMP) was prepared and used for the separation of the toxic Zn 2+ and Co 2+ heavy metal ions in an aqueous solution. When the doping amount of EDTMP was 20%, the adsorption capacity of 20ED-HAP composite for Zn 2+ and Co 2+ reached 229.5 mg/g and 162.4 mg/g, which was 11.0 times and 11.8 times that of synthesized HAP in the absence of EDTMP. The effects of different concentrations of common coexisting ions such as Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ were explored, and the removal rate of Co 2+ or Zn 2+ in a simulated actual water environment was also investigated. The removal of cobalt ions by EDTMP-HAP complex included ion exchange and surface complexation mechanisms. In addition to the above two mechanisms, the separation of zinc ions involved the dissolution precipitation mechanism with the formation of CaZn 2 (PO 4 ) 2 ·2H 2 O. Moreover, the affinity between EDTMP and HAP was revealed via Independent Gradient Model based on the Hirshfeld partition of molecular density (IGMH) and Hirshfeld surface analysis. Meanwhile, the interaction mechanism between EDTMP and Co 2+ or Zn 2+ was explored in depth through Multiwfn wavefunction analysis. The prepared adsorbent could be used as a low-cost potential adsorbent for toxic Zn 2+ and Co 2+ ions.

Zn2+-interference and H2S-mediated gas therapy based on ZnS-tannic acid nanoparticles synergistic enhancement of cell apoptosis for specific treatment of prostate cancer

Bo Zhou,Ben-Xu Jia,Ming-Jin Zhang,Yan-Jun Tan,Wei-Yuan Liang,Xiang Gan,Hong-Tao Li,Xiaoli Yang,Xing-Can Shen

Zn 2+ and H 2 S are essential to maintain normal prostate function, and sometimes can evolve into weapons to attack and destroy prostate cancer (PCa) cells. Nevertheless, how to achieve the targeted and effective release of Zn 2+ and H 2 S, and reverse the concentration distribution within PCa tumor cells still highly challenging. Herein, combined with these pathological characteristics of prostate, we proposed a tumor microenvironment (TME) responsive Zn 2+ -interference and H 2 S-mediated gas synergistic therapy strategy based on a nanoplatform of tannic acid (TA) modified zinc sulfide nanoparticles ( [email protected] ) for the specific treatment of PCa. Once the constructed pH-responsive [email protected] internalized by cancer cells, it would instantaneously decomposed in acidic TME, and explosively release excess Zn 2+ and H 2 S exceeding the cell self-regulation threshold. Meanwhile, the in situ produced Zn 2+ and H 2 S synergistic enhancement of cell apoptosis, which is evidenced to increase levels of Bax and Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, release of Cytochrome c in cancer cells, contributing to inhibit the growth of tumor. Moreover, the TA in cooperation with Zn 2+ specifically limits the migration and invasion of PCa cells. Both in vitro and in vivo results demonstrate that the Zn 2+ -interference in combination with H 2 S-mediated gas therapy achieves an excellent anti-tumor performance. Overall, this nanotheranostic synergistic therapy provides a promising direction for exploring new strategies for cancer treatment based on specific tumor pathological characteristics, and provides a new vision for promoting practical cancer therapy.

Fluorescent magnetic nanosensors for Zn2+ and CN− in aqueous solution prepared from adamantane-modified fluorescein and β-cyclodextrin-modified Fe3O4@SiO2 via host–guest interactions

Qiang Li,Yue Zhang,Yang Jin,Qingbiao Yang,Jianshi Du,Yaoxian Li

A novel multifunctional fluorescent chemosensor has been constructed with a highly selective “off–on” behavior, recoverability and recyclability based on β-CD/AD (adamantane) host–guest self-assembly interactions. Adamantane-modified fluorescein/cyclodextrin-modified Fe3O4@SiO2 inclusion complex magnetic nanoparticles (FFIC MNPs), which can provide a specific green fluorescence enhancement in response to Zn2+, have a detection limit of 4.5 × 10−7 mol L−1 in CH3CN : H2O (1 : 4, v/v). The spirolactam ring in the fluorophore moiety would be open with the introduction of Zn2+, while it could recover as long as the zinc in the complex is removed. Meanwhile, one gram of FFIC MNPs can adsorb 6.1 mg zinc. Therefore, the derivative chemosensors, FFIC MNPs–Zn, are available to respond to CN− due to the fluorescence quenching under UV (ultraviolet) radiation with a detection limit of 7.7 × 10−7 mol L−1. Furthermore, the FFIC MNPs exhibit great reusability and recyclability in aqueous solution on account of their magnetism and reproducibility. We recycle the residual MNPs to detect Zn2+ repeatedly for at least 4 times, after readily adsorbing the complex zinc with excess CN−, and the same principle also works in reverse. If the fluorophore moiety is inactive, we could also wash out the useless fluorescent molecules from the MNPs (hosts) and then reassemble new fluorescent small-molecules (guests) to maintain the efficient properties of the probe in responding to Zn2+ and CN− for at least 7 times.

Self-templated formation and characterization of polyhedral CoS hollow nanocage (HNC) for heavy metal ions (Ag+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+) removal in aqueous solutions

Wei Tian,Yaqin Rong,Dali Li,Jin Tian,Naiming Lin,Zhongde Wang

The contamination of water by heavy metal ions can easily cause serious environmental problems and damage to the human body hands down. Using zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) as a sacrificial template, polyhedral CoS hollow nanocages (HNC) were successfully synthesized by self-template approach as adsorbents for heavy metal ions removal. The CoS HNCs suggested good chemical stability and extremely efficient heavy metal ions removal of Ag + , Cd 2+ , Cu 2+ , Pb 2+ and Zn 2+ , which can be ranked in the order of Ni 2+ ≪ Zn 2+ , Cd 2+  < Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , Ag + . The saturation adsorption for Ag + reached 2147.944 mg g −1 and exhibited high distribution coefficients (K d ) > 107 mL g −1 . The CoS HNCs can rapidly reduce the Ag  +  concentration from ppm level to trace level of 1 ppb. It has been proved that the rapid and selective adsorption was achieved via the hierarchical pore structure of the CoS HNCs can better disperse these metal vacancies with super affinity and the S 2− , reduce the mass transfer distance and accelerate mass transfer. It is expected that such a CoS HNCs could be a promising alternative to conventional materials for the adsorption of heavy metal ions.
