Defect sites in heterostructures play a vital role in optimizing interfacial charge separation efficiency and carrier migration behavior, which enhance surface reaction dynamics. However, the effect of defect sites on modulation of electronic structure and oxygen activation is still ambiguous. Herein, we successfully construct in-plane ZnIn 2 S 4 /In 2 O 3 heterostructures by partial in-situ oxidation strategy and the surface properties can be precisely tuned by treating at individual temperatures. Notably, the in-plane ZnIn 2 S 4 /In 2 O 3 heterostructure which is treated in air at 425 °C exhibits outstanding sensing performance towards acetoin (R a /R g = 248.6 for 50 ppm acetoin at 180 °C), a biomarker of Listeria monocytogenes, with rapid response and recovery dynamic (18/183 s), along with excellent reliability and sensing stability. Detailed characterization and DFT calculation indicate that in-plane heterostructures possess numerous grain boundaries, thereby modulating the p-orbitals electronic structure of oxygen atom and promoting the formation of reactive oxygen species (O − (ad)). Moreover, the built-in electric field further also facilitates the electron transfer, further contributing to the enhanced sensing performance for 3-hydroxy-2-butanone.

In this work, polyethylene glycol is adopted as the solvent for the synthesis of ZnIn 2 S4 photocatalyst by the solvothermal method . Compared with the pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 synthesized in H 2 O solvent, those ones prepared in the polyethylene glycol solvent possess several unique features that are beneficial for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction, such as the increased Zinc vacancy level, the enlarged band gap, and the enhanced built-in internal electric field . These features allow for better charge separation efficiency, thereby improving the photocatalytic activity . The optimized ZnIn 2 S 4 can achieve a CO yield rate of 20.14 µmol/g/h at the gas-solid interface, which is 8.36 times that of the pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 .

The rational design of excellent visible light photocatalysts that efficiently utilize the solar spectrum is urgently needed. In this work, ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) and Co 3 Se 4 (CS) were coupled by a multistep process involving simple ultrasonic self-assembly and calcination to form ZnIn 2 S 4 /Co 3 Se 4 (ZIS/CS) photocatalysts with synergistic S-scheme heterojunctions and photothermal effects, which realized efficient photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) production with optimal H 2 yield of 2.46 mmol h −1 g −1 , superior to pure ZIS (0.47 mmol h −1 g −1 ) by a factor of 5.23. The excellent cyclic stability and wide environmental adaptability to the ionic environment of water of ZIS/CS were proved. The positive impaction of photothermal effect on the H 2 yield of ZIS/CS was investigated and confirmed by the temperature change of photocatalysts powder or photocatalytic system under light irradiation. In addition, based on a series of characterization analyses and first-principle simulation calculations, a charge transfer pathway for ZIS/CS S-scheme heterojunctions was proposed. This work provides valuable ideas and feasible research methods for the design of stable and practical photocatalysts.

Plasmonic photocatalysts have attracted considerable attention in photocatalytic systems. In this study, amorphous molybdenum oxide (MoO3−x) nanodots were anchored onto ZnIn2S4 nanospheres by a hydrothermal method. The prepared ZnIn2S4/MoO3−x (ZM) composites were then used as a visible-light-responsive catalyst to achieve photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Afterwards, the ZM composites were extensively characterized using multiple instruments and electrochemical measurements. Afterwards, the photocatalytic activity of ZM composites was evaluated under simulated sunlight (AM 1.5G) with 10% triethanolamine (TEOA) as a sacrificial reagent. Compared to pristine ZnIn2S4, the optimal composite (ZM10) boosts the hydrogen evolution rate from 1.34 mmol g−1 h−1 to 11.08 mmol g−1 h−1 and the apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) at 420 nm from 1.81% to 6.14%. The mechanism behind the enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution was explored by infrared thermal image measurement, EPR tests, XPS valence band measurement and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of MoO3−x and the formation of an interfacial Z-scheme heterojunction are revealed to be responsible for the improved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Finally, the cyclic experiment results show that ZM10 maintains a high hydrogen evolution rate after 5 cycles of testing, indicating strong chemical stability and good industrial potential.

In recent years, the overuse and improper disposal of antibiotics have led to their widespread presence in various environmental matrices and biological fluids. Exploring non-noble metal sulfides as electrocatalysts for reliable antibiotic detection holds substantial value but is limited by their inherent low electrochemical activity. Herein, CoS2 nanoparticles were first synthesized via a hydrothermal method, and used for the in situ assembly of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets. Then, plasma technology was employed for efficient and rapid generation of sulfur vacancies. Detailed studies illustrated the formation of heterojunctions, facilitating electron transfer from the thin, large-area ZnIn2S4 to CoS2, which acts as a co-catalyst due to its inherent conductivity and metallicity. The plasma-assisted generation of vacancies resulted in the formation of numerous exposed metal catalytic centers. Also, both the heterojunction and vacancy construction afforded a narrowed energy gap, an upregulated conduction band, and an enhanced carrier density, favoring electron injection during the electro-reduction process. Thus, an electrochemical platform was established using this material as an electrode substrate for furazolidone (Fz) detection, achieving a detection limit of 1.2 nM. The constructed platform was finally applied to evaluate Fz in actual samples of river water and urine, thanks to its good selectivity, high stability, and acceptable repeatability. In addition, in situ Fourier transform infrared technology was also used to monitor the electrocatalytic process. This work paves the way for preparing low-cost non-precious metal sulfides, which can be used as promising candidates for electrocatalysts in antibiotic testing.

A MoS 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 composite photocatalyst were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method for the visible-light-driven oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF). The reaction was conducted under mild, environmentally friendly conditions, using water as the solvent and without the need for additional oxidizing agents. The flower-like MoS 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 structure exhibited a high specific surface area, and the formation of a Z -scheme heterojunction between MoS 2 and ZnIn 2 S 4 effectively suppressed the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, thereby enhancing photocatalytic performance. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the 17.5 % MoS 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 composite possessed lower adsorption energy and a more delocalized electron cloud, creating more favorable conditions for HMF oxidation. Under optimal conditions, the catalyst achieved 70.2 % conversion of HMF with 92.2 % selectivity toward DFF after 3 h of xenon light irradiation. Radical trapping experiments indicated that superoxide radical (•O 2 − ) were the dominant reactive species driving the transformation. This study highlights the potential of one-step hydrothermally synthesized Z -scheme MoS 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunctions for efficient biomass-derived chemical valorization, offering valuable insights for the sustainable production of DFF and related high-value chemicals.

A novel hierarchical Au/black phosphorus nanosheets/ZnIn 2 S 4 (Au/BPNSs/ZIS) heterojunction photocatalyst has been successfully synthesized in this work, in which ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) nanosheets were first grown in situ on black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNSs) using the solvothermal method. Au nanoparticles were then photo-deposited on the outer surface of the ZIS. The hydrogen evolution rate of the optimal Au/BPNSs/ZIS is 1674 μmol·h −1 ·g −1 , which is 5 and 17 times higher than that of pure ZIS and few-layer BPNSs, respectively. The photocatalyst of BPNSs/ZIS is primarily attributed to the formation of Zn-P bonds between them to stabilize the connection of BPNSs/ZIS heterojunctions, according to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). At the same time, the work function calculation reveals that the interface electric field formed from ZIS to BPNSs is the driving force of interface charge transfer, allowing photoexcited electrons to migrate directionally on the interface and improve hydrogen evolution efficiency under visible light irradiation. Furthermore, Au nanoparticles are photo-deposited on the ZIS surface to form Schottky junctions, which improves photocatalytic performance even further. This work offers a novel approach to developing BP-based heterojunctions in photocatalysis .

Tetracycline (TC), as a persistent and widely detected antibiotic pollutant, poses severe ecotoxicological risks and necessitates rapid and efficient degradation strategies. Here, we demonstrate a photocatalytic self-Fenton process in which H 2 O 2 produced via visible-light-driven oxygen reduction is directly activated by Fe species for the rapid degradation of TC. To enable efficient H 2 O 2 production, a ternary ZnIn 2 S 4 / CdIn 2 S 4 /MnIn 2 S 4 (denoted as ZC 0.3 M 0.05 ) heterojunction photocatalyst was rationally constructed via a one-pot hydrothermal method. Structural analyses reveal that the three sulfides form a tightly coupled, multi-interfacial nanoscale architecture that induces pronounced interfacial strain and charge polarisation. Consequently, ZC 0.3 M 0.05 delivers a high H 2 O 2 production rate of 4907.7 μmol g⁻ 1 h⁻ 1 , outperforming pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 , CdIn 2 S 4 and MnIn 2 S 4 by factors of 15.2, 10.7 and 13.6, respectively. Upon Fe addition, the in situ generated H 2 O 2 enabled rapid self-Fenton degradation of TC, achieving 91.9 % removal within 5 min, while maintaining high activity under simulated environmental conditions. Combined spectroscopic, electrochemical and theoretical analyses reveal that work-function-difference-driven and stepwise electron-transfer pathways (MnIn 2 S 4 → ZnIn 2 S 4 → CdIn 2 S 4 ) across multiple heterointerfaces facilitate efficient charge separation and O 2 -to-*O 2 ⁻ electron injection. This work establishes a materials framework for on-demand H 2 O 2 production and direct self-Fenton pollutant remediation, and offers general design principles for high-performance ternary metal sulfide heterojunctions.

The development of highly efficient photocatalysts for solar-driven hydrogen evolution is critically important for addressing global energy and environmental challenges. In this study, a dual-vacancy system comprising cooperatively interacting sulfur vacancies (V S ) and indium vacancies (V In ) was constructed in ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) through a combined hydrothermal-acid etching strategy. This approach enabled site-selective enrichment of the two distinct vacancies within the [ZnS] 4 and [InS] 4 structural units, respectively, leading to the increment of the active sites for catalytic reaction. Systematic characterization and theoretical calculations confirm that the unique vacancy configuration induces a substantially enhanced built-in electric field (BIEF), oriented from the n-type V S region toward the p-type V In region, which effectively promotes spatial separation and directional migration of photogenerated electron-hole pairs while significantly suppressing non-radiative recombination. The optimized ZIS catalyst with dual-vacancies (ZIS-D) achieves an exceptional hydrogen evolution rate of 9.68 mmol·h −1 ·g −1 under simulated solar illumination, representing 7-fold and 4-fold enhancements compared to pristine ZIS and ZIS-V S samples, respectively. This study provides new perspectives and theoretical foundations for vacancy engineering in the design of advanced photocatalytic systems.

The simultaneous purification of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and photoelectrical conversion was achieved in a dual-chamber photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) system, employing commercial P25 TiO 2 as the photoanode and a ZnIn 2 S 4 / carbonized polypyrrole (ZIS/C-PPy) composite as the cathode. ZIS microspheres and C-PPy nanowires were combined through simple mechanical mixing, forming a composite that enables directional electron transfer from C-PPy to ZIS under illumination, accompanied by a remarkably reduced charge-transfer resistance. The ZIS/C-PPy cathode promotes a 2-electron oxygen reduction pathway, generating H 2 O 2 , which further participates in a Fenton-like reaction in the presence of Fe 3+ to produce ·OH radicals. These reactive species, together with h + and ·O 2 - confirmed by quenching experiments and EPR analysis, synergistically enhance PVA degradation in both chambers while suppressing the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. As a result, the PFC system exhibits significantly improved degradation efficiency and photoelectrical conversion performance.

Utilization of active site and chemical bonding “bridge” to promote the charge transfer and expedite the catalytic kinetics has been regarded as a promising strategy to achieve highly-efficient photocatalysts. Herein, medium-entropy CdCoNiS cocatalysts coupled with ZnIn 2 S 4 matrix were prepared by a solvothermal method and subsequent water-bath treatment. The experimental results and theoretical calculation confirmed that the hydrogen adsorption capacity, charge-transfer dynamics and surface charge utilization were significantly improved due to the successful construction of dual-active sites and chemical bonding “bridge”. As a result, the optimum samples exhibited a high hydrogen evolution rate of 11.4 mmol g −1 h −1 and an apparent quantum efficiency of 11.7% at 420 nm. Moreover, the photostability was evidenced by remaining excellent photoactivity after four cycles. This work may be extended to other medium-entropy cocatalysts and provide an insight for the exploration of efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production system.

Photocatalysis based on metal sulfide semiconductor is considered as an economic, safe, renewable, and clean technology. However, the availability of photocatalysts is limited by the low solar energy utilization efficiency and the fast recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Developing a hollow heterostructure photocatalyst based on semiconductors for enhancing solar energy utilization and separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers is crucial in the photocatalytic H 2 production reaction. The as-prepared 3D hierarchical nanocages photocatalyst CuS@ZnIn 2 S 4 with abundant and compact nanosheets 2D/2D hetero-interfaces displayed an improved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate as high as 7910 μmol h −1 g −1 in the absence of any cocatalyst. This is the first report of the use of CuS nanosheets-assembled hollow cubic cages to construct 3D hierarchical nanocages photocatalysts. The close distance between the two nanosheet subunits induce the strong interaction, which was advantage to the separation and transfer of charge carriers. In addition, the hollow structure can not only enhance light adsorption, but also suppress photogenerated carrier recombination. The experimental characterizations and theory calculations confirmed that the strong interaction between CuS and ZnIn 2 S 4 2D/2D hetero-interfaces can extremely facilitate the separation of photogenerated charge carriers and accelerate the electrons transfer. The present work provides a feasible method to construct heterojunction photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution via water splitting powered.
