This paper reports a high-performance glucose biosensor using ZnO nanorod-based field effect transistor (FET) to continuously monitor glucose concentration. Sensing area reduction of the sensor for minimally-invasive glucose monitoring with high sensitivity and good stability is demonstrated. The biosensor is fabricated via a hydrothermal growth of semiconducting ZnO nanorods between source and drain micro-electrodes incorporating with alternating current (AC) electric-field control. ZnO nanorod structured FET acts as a frequency mixer to transduce glucose concentration into a current change at certain difference frequency, which is measured by a lock-in amplifier. Due to the large surface-to-volume ratio of ZnO nanorods and the advanced frequency mixing detection scheme, good anti-jamming capability and long-term stability are realized. The glucose sensor achieves a high sensitivity of 1.6 mA/(μM-cm 2 ), a glucose concentration detection limit of 1 μM, and excellent long-term stability shown in 38-h continuous monitoring. In contrast to the state-of-the-art glucose sensors, the developed biosensor exhibits competitive advantages in sensitivity, long-term stability, tiny size and fabrication cost, which indicates its promising application potential in wearable continuous glucose monitoring for diabetics.

In this paper, AuPd alloy nanoparticles (NPs) are prepared by co-reduction method using double reducing agents. Different mass percentages of AuPd alloy NPs loaded ZnO nanomaterials are prepared by classical impregnation method. The gas sensing properties of the sensor are studied. 0.5 wt% AuPd–ZnO exhibits a higher gas sensing response (Ra/Rg = 32, 50 ppm ethanol), which is 1.88 times that of ZnO gas sensing response. At the same time, the response/recovery time is 2 s/29 s. Compared with ZnO, the recovery time is reduced by 55 s. At last, the sensing mechanism in the process of gas sensing test is analyzed based on AuPd alloy NPs and ZnO.

To controllably construct ZnO-base heterostructures, unique ZnO hexagonal quasi-hourglasses have been synthesized by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal approach. The phase purity and the morphologies of as-prepared samples have been determined by using X-ray powder diffractometer, field-emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. We have rationally discussed the growth and reaction mechanism and revealed the morphological evolution of ZnO hexagonal quasi-hourglasses. Dodecylamine, as well as the initial concentration of zinc source, the reaction temperature and time, play an important part in the synthesis of ZnO hexagonal quasi-hourglasses. Between ZnO and Zn 5 (OH) 8 (NO 3 ) 2 , a reversible reaction seldom reported occurs in a circular manner as the reaction proceeds continuously. The presence of ZnO multipods in the products and the controllable synthesis of half of ZnO hexagonal quasi-hourglass betoken a possibility to synthesize ZnO hierarchical architectures, even ZnO-base heterostructures by using this kind of ZnO building blocks.

Circularly polarized light (CPL) photodetectors have attracted widespread interest from both the academic and industrial communities. Commonly, the key function layer of a film structured CPL photodetector is the chiral material layer that exhibits optoelectronic response differently to the left-handed and right-handed circularly polarized light. In this report, the heterostructured chiral ZnO-CuO nanorod arrays were successfully prepared by a strategy of combining the solution synthesis of ZnO nanorod arrays, grazing angle magnetron sputtering of Cu, and a thermal oxidation process. The chirality of left-/right-handedness was controlled by the sputtering angles and rotating direction. The morphology of nanorod arrays benefits light scattering and hence the absorption. The band structure of the ZnO-CuO heterojunction facilitates carrier transfer and transport. The CPL photodetectors based on the chiral ZnO-CuO nanorod arrays exhibit good performance with a responsivity (R), photocurrent asymmetry factor (gIph), responsivity asymmetry factor (gres), and photodetectivity (D*) of 13.0 mA/W, 0.038, 0.22, and 8.3 × 1011 Jones achieved, respectively, under the 450 nm circular polarized light.

1D mesoporous materials have attracted extensive interest recently, owning to their fascinating properties and versatile applications. However, it remains as a grand challenge to develop a simple and efficient technique to produce oxide nanofibers with mesoporous architectures, controlled morphologies, large surface areas, and optimal performances. In this work, a facile foaming-assisted electrospinning strategy with foaming agent of tea saponin is used to produce thoroughly mesoporous ZnO nanofibers with high purity and controlled morphology. Interestingly, mesoporous fibers with elliptical cross-section exhibit the significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production, as compared to the counterparts with circular and rectangular cross-sections, and they also perform better than the commercial ZnO nanopowders. The unexpected shape dependence of photocatalytic activities is attributed to the different stacking modes of the mesoporous fibers, and a geometrical model is developed to account for the shape dependence. This work represents an important step toward producing thoroughly mesoporous ZnO nanofibers with tailored morphologies, and the discovery that fibers with elliptical cross-section render the best performance provides a valuable guideline for improving the photocatalytic performance of such mesoporous nanomaterials.

Superior texture-controlled ZnO thin film is prepared using a low cost electrochemical deposition process at open atmospheric condition. FE-SEM shows that the surface morphology can be altered from nanorods to microplates by adding a chemical additive. XRD analysis confirms that the crystalline growth direction and texture can be controlled by changing the additive concentration during the deposition. Using the optimized ZnO based back reflector (BR) in single junction a-SiGe:H solar cell device, we have achieved external quantum efficiency (EQE) as high as 87% at ∼550 nm; the EQE corrected short circuit current density ( J SC ) was 20.63 mA cm −2 and solar cell efficiency was 7.73% for the single junction a-SiGe:H solar cell. It proves to us that the high quality ZnO thin films can be produced at much reduced cost using electrochemical deposition for solar cell and other optoelectronic applications.

A superhydrophobic (SHP) surface is believed to be potential candidates for anti-icing/frosting applications. In this study, a SHP surface with ZnO nanorods was fabricated through radio frequency (RF) magneton sputtering method. The XRD pattern, surface morphology, wettability and chemical composition were characterized by corresponding methods. The anti-frosting property and mechanism of frost propagation on surfaces exhibiting various degrees of wettability were investigated on a Peltier-based platform. Compared with the bare glass surface and a permanent-room-temperature-vulcanized silicon rubber-coated glass surface, the as-prepared SHP ZnO surface displays excellent anti-frosting property. Frost formation on the as-prepared SHP ZnO surface was delayed for 140 min at −10 °C. A large gap free of condensed water droplets formed on the as-prepared SHP ZnO surface because of the self-propelled movement and absorption of condensed water droplets by the frost front. As a consequence, the frost propagation rate is effectively reduced. Moreover, after 30 cycles of frosting/defrosting process, no evident degradation of the as-prepared SHP ZnO surfaces was observed, indicating fair durability against repetitive frosting/defrosting process. Our study provides insights into the mechanism of anti-frosting property of nanostructured SHP surfaces and proposes a potential method to fabricate an anti-frosting surface.

High-sensitivity infrared photodetectors have attracted attention due to their broad applications. Photomultiplication is an ideal choice for high-sensitivity photodetectors since it can generate large photogenerated current under incident faint illumination, making them more user-friendly and cost-effective without any extra amplifier circuits. In this work, 2 wt.% acetic acid in methanol is optimized to treat the electron-accumulated ZnO layer in photodetector ITO/ZnO/PbS/Ag by increasing its interfacial oxygen vacancies, thus the interfacial band bends at the ZnO/PbS interface due to the accumulated charges under illumination. In this way, a high-gain photomultiplication-type photodetector ITO/ZnO/PbS/Ag, in which PbS colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) act as the active layer, is presented. As a result, a high responsivity of 524 A/W with a high external quantum efficiency of 66516% is achieved from the photodetector ITO/ZnO/PbS/Ag under 0.2 µW cm −2 980 nm illumination at -1 V. Further, a low turn-on voltage of 2 V is obtained from the upconverters ITO/ZnO/PbS(240 nm)/TAPC(50 nm)/CBP:Ir(ppy) 3 (60 nm)/BCP(20 nm)/LiF(1nm)/Al under 1.637 mW cm −2 980 nm illumination, exhibiting a photon-to-photon conversion efficiency of 11.08%. In addition, upconversion imaging through a single-pixel device and a 16 × 16 display array is demonstrated, implying its potential scalable applications. Therefore, it provides a promising and applicable pathway for high-performance upconverters.

Traditional power supply systems based on batteries, as ineffective payloads, significantly hinder the development of ignition systems. To eliminate the dependence on batteries, we developed a self-powered ignition system utilizing a piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) based on ZnO-doped polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers with high β-phase content. When subjected to external mechanical stimulation, the output voltage of the PENG reaches 32 V, which can charge a 22 μF capacitor to 15 V within 200 s and then simultaneously light up five LEDs. A self-powered ignition circuit composed of subsystems for power harvesting, storage, and discharge is assembled to activate igniters such as Ni-Cr wire, Ni-Cr film, standard semiconductor bridge (SCB), high-resistance SCB and small-sized SCB. The energy conversion processes of the igniters, whether via electric explosion or electrothermal manner, complete within 2 μs to 0.5 ms and then successfully ignite nanothermites of Al/CuO, primary explosives of lead styphnate, or mixtures of potassium chlorate and lead thiocyanate. Subsequently, a pressed B/KNO 3 (BPN) pellet, either in contact with or separate from the igniter by up to 3.3 mm, can be successfully ignited, fulfilling the ignition and transmission functions of ignition trains. These results demonstrate that the self-powered ignition system can work reliably without batteries, which is conducive to the miniaturization and intelligence of initiators and pyrotechnic devices.

Developing a portable and compact sensor for room temperature detection of H2S in exhaled breath for health assessment presents considerable technical challenges. This work successfully synthesized Cu2O/ZnO heterostructures with excellent gas sensitivity to H2S at room and lower temperatures using a two-dimensional (2D) electrodeposition in situ assembly method with the application of a semisine wave voltage as well as CuZnO nanoarrays deposited under direct current voltage. The Cu2O/ZnO heterostructure sensors, with high response of 8.53 × 104 to 1 ppm of H2S and a minimum detection limit of 10 ppb at room temperature, exhibit a response of 42 for 10 ppm of H2S even at −20 °C, and its response to 50 ppm of H2S is approximately 3774 times greater than that of the CuZnO sensor, which is a significant challenge to achieve with sensors based on oxygen adsorption/desorption mechanisms. These outstanding gas-sensing properties are attributed to the formation of p–n heterojunctions in the Cu2O/ZnO heterostructures and the occurrence of the sulfuration reaction. In addition, we successfully employed the Cu2O/ZnO sensor to detect H2S in human exhaled breath, offering valuable insights for the monitoring of various chronic diseases and new directions for the development of portable room-temperature breath sensors.

Controlling the crystallinity and microstructure of a semiconductor photocatalyst serves as an effective means to boost its photocatalytic performance through improving the charge transfer and separation, enhancing the light absorption, or maneuvering the surface reactions. Nevertheless, the internal pores in aerogel materials inevitably collapse during the traditional high temperature crystallization process, significantly reducing the porous structure and specific surface area (SSA). Herein, microsphere ZnO aerogels have been successfully fabricated for photoreduction of CO 2 using a cooperative strategy of sol–gel method, solvothermal crystallization and cryodesiccation. The obtained aerogel has a large SSA and high crystallinity. Compared with the commercial ZnO powder, the ZnO aerogel microsphere exhibits about 4-fold increase in specific surface area, leading to an increased contact surface between the photocatalyst and the reactant. At the same time, ZnO aerogel with microsphere morphology possesses high light-harvesting and intrapore light reflecting capabilities, demonstrating enhanced optical utilization. Modulation of the crystallinity of ZnO aerogel facilitated the incorporation of defect engineering (zinc defects (Zn i ) and oxygen vacancies (V o )). As a result, ZnO aerogel microsphere exhibits a 5-fold higher products production rate than ZnO powder for photocatalytic CO 2 reactions due to the synergistic effect of appropriate crystallinity and microsphere appearance. It is hoped that this work may provide some insights to tune the catalyst performance through crystallinity and morphology.
