Highly ordered and uniformly sized mesoporous carbon nanospheres (MCNs) were synthesized by a low-concentration hydrothermal method . Then, a polymeric ionic liquid (PIL) was incorporated into the MCNs by a hydrothermal method to form (polymeric ionic liquid)/(mesoporous carbon nanospheres) (PIL-MCNs) nanocomposites . The MCNs and PIL-MCNs were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The characterization results demonstrate that the materials are highly ordered and possess uniform size. The PIL-MCNs modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) exhibits good electrocatalytic properties to the redox of hydroquinone (HQ), catechol (CC), and paracetamol (PA), and typical oxidation peak potentials are of 0.214 V, 0.321 V and 0.509 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), respectively. The PIL-MCNs/CS/GCE was used to the simultaneous determination of HQ and CC, and also the detection of PA. Under optimal conditions, the responses to HQ, CC and PA are linear in 10–350 μM, 10–400 μM and 1–300 μM, and the detection limits are 1.39, 0.62, and 0.164 μM (S/N = 3). Satisfactory results were obtained in determination of HQ, CC simultaneously in spiked tap water samples, and in the detection of PA in paracetamol tablets. In addition, the sensor displays satisfied selectivity, good reproducibility and stability.

In the present study, we report a facile method for preparing a porous MWCNTs/ZIF-67 nanocomposite with the help of a morphology-maintained ZIF-67 in situ growth on multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Interesting, the MWCNTs/ZIF-67 nanocomposite demonstrated excellent electrochemical activity for hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) attribute to the effective interconnections ZIF-67 crystals and MWCNTs. The analytical curves for HQ and CC obtained by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were linear in the range from 0.5 to 100 μM. Benefitting from the excellent conductivity of MWCNTs as well as the high surface area and porosity of ZIF-67, the advanced nanocomposite displayed good reproducibility, high selectivity and excellent stability, and was successfully employed to assay the content of dihydroxybenzene isomers in the lake water samples.

As an essential chemical intermediate, catechol (CC) residues may have adverse effects on human health. Herein, an effective and facile photoelectrochemical sensor platform based on MgIn 2 S 4 /CdWO 4 composite is constructed for monitoring CC. MgIn 2 S 4 increases light absorption range and activity, while CdWO 4 enhances photoelectronic stability, and the type-II heterojunction formed can significantly enhance photocurrent response. Due to the autoxidation process, CC is converted into oligomeric products, which increase the spatial site resistance and attenuate the overall photocurrent response. It is worth noting that the cauliflower-like structure of MgIn 2 S 4 can provide a large specific surface area , and the presence of Mg 2+ promotes autoxidation , thus providing a suitable condition for detecting CC. Under optimal conditions, the MgIn 2 S 4 /CdWO 4 /GCE photoelectrochemical sensor has a prominent linear relationship in the range of CC concentration from 2 nM to 7 μM, with a limit of detection of 0.27 nM. With satisfactory selectivity, excellent stability, and remarkable reproducibility, this sensor provides a crucial reference value for effectively and rapidly detecting pollutants in environmental water samples.

NiFe PBA exhibits laccase-mimic for ORR and electrocatalyze oxidation of CC and HQ. • A self-powered sensor by assembling NiFe PBA as both anode and cathode catalyst. • The sensor capable of detecting CC or HQ in simulated wastewater satisfactorily. Biofuel cells are widely applied in designing self-powered sensors (SPS) due to their rich fuel source, environmental friendliness, and advantages in operating under neutral pH and room temperatures. However, they are limited by inherent drawbacks of biological enzymes as catalysts, such as poor stability and high costs, greatly restricting their real applications. Herein we report on NiFe Prussian blue analogue (PBA) nanocubes with good mimicking laccase activity, which can not only exhibit excellent oxygen reduction reaction in the absence of electron mediators, but also efficiently electrocatalyze the oxidation of phenolic fuels. Subsequently, a dual-chamber enzyme-free fuel cell was constructed using NiFe PBA as both the anode and cathode catalysts as well as catechol (CC)/hydroquinone (HQ) as the fuel. Based on this, a SPS was developed to detect CC or HQ. The maximum power density ( P max ) of the HQ-fueled sensor is linear within 0.5 μM–5 mM HQ in three parts. Similarly, the P max for CC-fueled sensor is linear with 5 μM–5 mM CC in three parts. Moreover, the sensor has excellent selectivity and is capable of monitoring simulated wastewater. Thus, this work demonstrates an efficient enzyme-free biofuel cells based SPS using the same nanomaterial as anode and cathode catalyst. A silica-sphere–poly(catechol hexamethylenediamine) (PCHA–SiO 2 ) composite was prepared via the one-step facile polymerization of catechol and hexamethylenediamine; this method uses a silica sphere as a hard template. The chemical structures and morphologies of this composite were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy. The adsorption experiments indicated that the PCHA–SiO 2 composite served as a very attractive adsorbent for Pb(II)-, Cu(II)-, and Cd(II)-ion removal at lower concentrations and had very good selective adsorption abilities for Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions in a solution contaminated with these three ions at higher concentrations. These interesting results may have been due to the reversible H + adsorption–desorption properties of the characteristic phenol amine structure of the PCHA–SiO 2 composite. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graphene–chitosan composite film modified glassy carbon electrode was prepared and characterized. The fabricated electrode showed excellent electrochemical catalytic activities towards the oxidation of catechol (CT), resorcinol (RS) and hydroquinone (HQ). The oxidation overpotentials of CT, RS and HQ decreased significantly and the corresponding oxidation currents increased remarkably compared with those obtained at the bare GCE and chitosan modified GCE. Some kinetic parameters , such as the electron transfer number ( n ), proton transfer number ( m ), charge transfer coefficient ( α ) and the apparent heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant ( k s ), were calculated. Differential pulse voltammetry was used for the simultaneous determination of CT, RS and HQ in their ternary mixture . The peak-to-peak potential separations between CT and RS, RS and HQ, and HQ and CT were 0.388, 0.484 and 0.096 V, respectively. The calibration curves for CT, RS and HQ were obtained in the range of 1 × 10 −6 to 4 × 10 −4 , 1 × 10 −6 to 5.5 × 10 −4 and 1 × 10 −6 to 3 × 10 −4 mol L −1 , respectively. The detection limits were 7.5 × 10 −7 mol L −1 ( S / N = 3).

A copper sulfide nanoflakes-decorated carbon nanofragments-modified glassy carbon electrode (CuS-CNF/GCE) was fabricated for the electrocatalytic differentiation and determination of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC). The physicochemical properties of the CuS-CNF were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The electrocatalytic determination of HQ and CC over the CuS-CNF/GCE was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. An excellent detection limit and sensitivity of the CuS-CNF/GCE are obtained (0.293 µM and 0.259 µM) with a sensitivity of 184 nA µM−1cm−2and 208 nA µM−1cm−2(S/N=3) for HQ and CC, respectively. In addition, the CuS-CNF/GCE shows a selective identification of HQ and CC over potential interfering metal ions (Zn2+, Na+, K+, NO3−, SO42−, Cl−) and organic compounds (ascorbic acid, glucose), and a satisfactory recovery is also obtained in the spiked water samples. These results suggest that the CuS-CNF/GCE can be used as an efficient electrochemical sensor for the simultaneous determination of co-existing environmental pollutants such as HQ and CC in water environments with high selectivity and acceptable reproducibility. Keywords:carbon nanofragments;copper sulfide;catechol;hydroquinone;electrochemical sensor;simultaneous determination

We describe an electrochemical sensor for simultaneous determination of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC). A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with gold nanoparticles, L-cysteine, and ZnS/NiS@ZnS quantum dots using a layer-by-layer technique. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffractometry, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and electrochemical impedance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry revealed this modified GCE to represent a highly sensitive sensor for the simultaneous determination of HQ and CC. The anodic peak current for HQ at a working voltage of 80 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl) is related to its concentration in the 0.1 to 300 μM range (even in the presence of 0.1 mM of CC). The anodic peak current for CC at a working voltage of 184 mV is related to its concentration in the 0.5 to 400 μM range (even in the presence of 0.1 mM of HQ). The detection limits (at an S/N ratio of 3) are 24 and 71 nM for HQ and CC, respectively. The modified GCE was successfully applied to the determination of HQ and CC in aqueous solutions and gave satisfactory results.
A glassy carbon electrode was modified with gold nanoparticles, ZnS/NiS@ZnS quantum dots and L-cysteine and used for simultaneous determination of hydroquinone and catechol.

Phosphate buffered saline (PBS) is a commonly used buffer in biological research. Herein, the stability of a series of flavonoids , i.e. myricetin , kaempferol , baicalein , luteolin and quercetin , were assessed in PBS within 5 s. Apigenin proved very stable in PBS and was therefore used as a control. Kaempferol and baicalein were less stable with small amounts of oxidized and hydroxylated products being detected. The other flavonoids were unstable and their dimers were identified in PBS at 4 °C under normal atmospheric conditions. Flavonols with a catechol or pyrogallol substitution pattern on ring B readily formed stable dimers and oxidized products in PBS (pH = 7.4) at 4 °C within 5 s. The chosen experimental conditions improved the stability of dimers and allowed their detection.

Rational design porous nanomaterials with high specific surface area (SSA) have become an effective approach to improve their electrocatalytic activity, and thus enhancing the electrochemical sensing performance. However, increasing of SSA generally accompanied by magnifying the background current signal, which results in the electrochemical sensors may not achieve the optimal sensing performance. For porous nanomaterials, not only the appropriate SSA but also the pore size probably impacts the electrochemical sensing performance, while this aspect has seldomly studied in electrochemical sensor. Herein, the different SSA and pore size of graphene frameworks (GFs) are successfully synthesized by adjusting the ratio of the mixture of glucose and Na 2 CO 3 via one-step fast pyrolysis process. The tailored GFs has been used as electrode material for constructing non-enzymic electrochemical sensor with catechol (CC) used as model analyte. Electrochemical analysis result suggests that GFs with the highest SSA do not obtain the best behavior, while GFs with abundant hierarchical pore structure and relatively large SSA can achieve the best performance. The optimized GFs as electrode materials for electrochemical detection of CC exhibit a low detection limit of 0.19 μM, and a relatively wide linear range between 1 and 201 μM. This work provides a guide for developing new porous carbon materials for electrochemical sensor with better performance.

Catechol is a phenolic environmental pollutant that is highly toxic to living organisms and is released into the environment, where it is difficult to degrade in the ecosystem, thereby contaminating the environment and groundwater. Here, P(NIPAM-co-BMA)/BiPO 4 /BiOCl/MWCNTs nanocomposites were synthesized, and a temperature-controlled "on/off" electrochemical sensor was constructed. In addition, the P(NIPAM-co-BMA)/BiPO 4 /BiOCl/MWCNTs/GCE sensor shows good thermal sensitivity and electrochemical detection of catechol. Reproducible "on/off" switching on the CVs curve can be achieved by controlling the temperature of the solution. Under optimal conditions, the sensor was able to detect catechol in the linear range of 0.5–86.51 μM with a limit of detection of 0.2 μM (S/N = 3). Satisfactory results were obtained for the detection of natural environmental samples (tap water). In addition, the redox mechanism and electrochemical reaction sites of catechol were investigated by scanning rates. This work demonstrates for the first time the combination of temperature-sensitive polymers, bismuth-based compounds and multi-walled carbon nanotubes as electrochemical sensors for the detection of catechol, opening a new window for the sensitive detection of catechol. At the same time, the constructed switch-like electrochemical sensors can be better applied to different special scenarios.

Hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) are important chemical raw materials in the modern industry, unfortunately, which are also high toxic phenolic pollutants. So how to achieve highly sensitive and selective determination HQ and CC is the challenge we face. In the present work, we report a facile strategy to obtain nitrogen and phosphorous co-doped glucose-derived carbon coated CoP nanowires (G-CoP/N,P–C NWs), in which nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) was as the chelating reagent, glucose was as carbon source, and the precursors were subsequently experienced carbonization and phosphorization process. G-CoP/N,P–C NWs can shorten the distance of the electron transport and expand the reaction area, showing the intriguing electronic conductivity and electrocatalytic abilities. An electrochemical phenolic sensor based on G-CoP/N,P–C NWs is fabricated. The as-prepared sensor showcases the good sensing performance for HQ and CC with comparative linearity ranges of 0.8–900 μM (HQ) and 0.6–800 μM (CC), low limits of detections (LODs) of 0.18 μM (S/N = 3) and 0.12 μM (S/N = 3) for HQ and CC, respectively. Notably, it also displays excellent practical application for the recognition of HQ and CC in the rain water, the tap water , the domestic wastewater and the lake water, which may be a promising candidate in environmental water monitoring and drinking water safety.
