Dual action bactericides: Quaternary ammonium/N-halamine-functionalized cellulose fiber

Bojian Hu,Xiaoqin Chen,Yan Zuo,Zuliang Liu,Xiaodong Xing

Bi-functional antibacterial material was prepared by co-grafting N -halamine and quaternary ammonium salt monomers from cellulose fiber. The grafted fiber was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, and X-ray photoelectron spectra. The N -halamine derived from the precursor 4-[(acryloxy)methyl]-4-ethyl-2-oxazolidinone via chlorination treatment and the oxidative chlorine (Cl + ) leaching behavior were investigated. The antibacterial activities of singly (only QAs-functionalized or only Cl + -releasing) and dual (QAs-functionalized and Cl + -releasing) functional cellulose fibers were tested against Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus . Compared to singly functionalized formulations, the bi-functional cellulose fiber exhibited excellent and rapid bactericidal performance against both E. coli and S. aureus . © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Lightweight, thermal-insulating biopolymer aerogels scaffolded by multiscale cellulose fibers

Han Qian,Wang Huili,Wang Yantao,Shen Zhenpeng,Wang He,Song Zhaoping,Liu Wenxia,Cao Lepan

Aerogels remain a focal point for researchers seeking to tackle environmental and energy challenges through innovative thermal insulation solutions. Designing and acquiring lightweight biobased aerogels that possess flexibility and thermal insulation represent a key future direction. Herein, taking advantage of synergistic assembly of xanthan gum (XG) and konjac glucomannan (KGM), and a novel biobased aerogel (XG/KGM@F) was fabricated and scaffolded by multiscale cellulose fibers (MCFs) through vacuum freeze-drying technology. The structural characterization demonstrates that the synergy of MCFs and polysaccharides forms a robust hierarchical network within the aerogels, significantly enhancing their mechanical resilience. The XG/KGM@F aerogels exhibit remarkable thermal insulation properties with a temperature difference (Δ T ) exceeding 60 °C for a long time between the top and bottom surfaces of the aerogels. With an ultra-low density of 3.97 mg cm −3 and a thermal conductivity of 0.0288 W m −1  K −1 , the XG/KGM@F demonstrates its potential for applications necessitating lightweight and sustainable thermal insulation. This study not only advances the design of biobased aerogels but also provides a scalable and eco-friendly strategy for developing high-performance insulation materials, aligning with global sustainability goals in packaging, construction, and energy conservation. Interactions between cellulose and lignin during hydrolysis in subcritical water

Fan Yang,Pengfei Zhu,Haiqing Zheng,Wei Yang,Shengji Wu,Huajian Ye,Lei Che

The interactions between cellulose and lignin, and the hydrolysis behavior of cellulose, lignin and cellulose-lignin mixtures with mass ratios of 25/75, 50/50, 75/25 in subcritical water were investigated in this study. Cellulose and lignin interactions greatly promoted the hydrolysis of lignin during hydrolysis of the cellulose-lignin mixture with a mass ratio of 25/75, whereas they accelerated and suppressed lignin hydrolysis in the other cellulose-lignin mixtures at reaction temperatures under and above 257 °C, respectively. The cellulose and lignin interactions presented negative effects on cellulose hydrolysis in all the samples at reaction temperatures higher than 257 °C. However, they showed positive and negative effects in the cellulose-lignin mixture with a mass ratio of 25/75, and the cellulose-lignin mixtures with mass ratios of 50/50 and 75/25, respectively, at reaction temperatures under 257 °C. The cellulose and lignin interactions also suppressed the heat-related reactions and the glucose and aromatic-linked polymer char formation reactions.

Improved boundary lubrication of perfluoropolyether using fluoropolymer-grafted cellulose nanocrystal

Ge Yue,Lin Ning,Du Chen,Amann Tobias,Feng Hao,Yuan Chengqing,Li Ke

As the thickener for fluorine greases, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) powder performs insufficient load-carrying capacity and limited assistance for friction reduction and wear resistance in the boundary lubrication regime. The present work aims to explore novel nanoparticles with higher mechanical strength as an alternative to PTFE. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were surface modified by grafting (or partially adsorbing) fluoropolymer chains and introduced into perfluoropolyether PFPE base oil. The obtained polyhexafuorobutyl methacrylate grafted CNC (CNC-g-PHFMA) powder exhibited good compatibility with the PFPE oil. The friction test and wear analysis showed that CNC-g-PHFMA formed a more intensive and stable tribo-film than PTFE on the sliding surface, resulting in more effective friction reduction (11%) and wear resistance (19%). This study demonstrates that fluoropolymer-grafted CNCs have a good application prospect in fluorine greases.

High-performance nanomesh-structured cellulose as a versatile pharmaceutical excipient

Xiaowen Li,Dongdong Ye,Zhongrun Xiang,Huai Wang,Huiqing Wang,Yun Lu,Risheng Yao

Biocompatible cellulose has been used as a pharmaceutical excipient for several decades. However, there are still shortcomings, such as low drug loading, slow disintegration, and easy drug extraction. Herein, we describe a novel process for manufacturing cellulose nanomesh (CNM), a new structured nanocellulose with a high surface area of 98.37 m 2 g −1 and a high yield above 88%. This process combines mild acid vapor with a dilute enzymatic hydrolysis preparation method. The unique nanomesh structure clearly demonstrates benefits as superior drug carriers, including a high drug loading rate (>81.2%), miniaturizing volume, ultrafast disintegration time (<7 s), long-term sustained release (22 h), and also a strong drug-abuse deterrent effect. Our work suggests that the CNM produces great potential as a promising multi-functional drug carrier to realize tablet miniaturization, drug abuse-deterrent, and drug slow and controlled release.

Efficient Persistent Luminescence from Cellulose–Halide Mixtures for Optical Encryption

Zece Zhu,Lifan Zeng,Wei Li,Weilin Xu,Di Tian

Natural renewable resources with long-lived persistent luminescence have attracted wide attention since many of these luminescence materials have low toxicity and are environmentally friendly. However, many of these materials lack conjugated groups such as aromatic rings, leading to weak absorption and low luminescence quantum yields. Herein, we proposed an effective method to enhance the luminescence of cellulose, a natural polymer free of conjugated groups. Halide salts were doped in cellulose for inducing absorption transition from halide ions to polysaccharide chains and increasing intersystem crossing through the external heavy-atom effect. In addition, divalent metal ions doped in cellulose could reduce nonradiative relaxations through electrostatic interactions. The phosphorescence quantum yield of dried cellulose doped with MgBr2 could reach 5%, significantly higher than that of many other natural renewable resources. The results provided a simple and effective method for tuning the persistent luminescence of cellulose, which could be easily applied to optical encryption on cellulose-based textiles and papers. This method may be extended widely for enhancing the clustering-triggered emission of many other nonconjugated organic materials in luminescence bioimaging, anticounterfeiting, and encryption.

Phosphorylated cellulose carbamate for highly effective capture of U(VI)

Zhang Nan,Li Jinfeng,Tian Bo,Zhang Jianwei,Li Tuo,Li Zhigang,Wang Yi,Liu Zhixin,Zhao Hongtao,Ma Fuqiu

A novel phosphorylated cellulose carbamate (PCC- x ) by introducing urea into the functionalized reaction is demonstrated. The effects of urea content on the structures and U(VI) adsorption properties of PCC- x are investigated. The results indicate that urea provides new amino sites along cellulose chains and plays a decisive role in the phosphorylation modification of cellulose carbamate. When the content of urea is optimized, the sample possesses the maximum degree of phosphorylation, resulting in the excellent U(VI) adsorption properties, including high adsorption capacity (1006.9 mg·g −1 at pH = 5 and T  = 298 K), fast adsorption dynamics, good adsorption selectivity and reusability. A Versatile 2D Cellulose Platform Strategy from Natural Wood Scaffold

Chao Wang,Hanwei Wang,Baokang Dang,Yushan Yang,Lei Zhou,Yingying Li,Qingfeng Sun

A wood cell wall with cellulose as the key scaffold is a natural hierarchical lamellar structure. This wood-derived cellulose scaffold has recently attracted enormous attention and interest, but almost all efforts have been devoted to its whole tissue functionalization. Here, we report the short ultrasonic processing of a wood cellulose scaffold to directly generate 2D cellulose materials. The obtained 2D cellulose nanosheets consist of many highly oriented fibrils densely arranged and can be further converted to ultrathin 2D carbon nanosheets. The nanoparticles, nickel–iron layer double hydroxide nanoflowers, manganese dioxide nanorods, and zinc oxide nanostars, are successfully loaded in the 2D nanosheet, providing a versatile 2D platform strategy for excellent 2D hybrid nanomaterials.

Cellulose degradation of cottonseed meal derived porous carbon for supercapacitor

Tao Wang,Lina Peng,Bowen Deng,Fang Yuan,Jia Guo,Qian Liu,Dongling Wu

Enzyme, as a type of biocatalyst, has a superior degradability on the biomass component. Herein, the cellulase degradation of cottonseed meal (CCM) is used as carbon source and potassium citrate as activating agent to fabricate O, S, N co-doped carbon materials. Cellulase pretreatment degrades the cellulose (from 12.48 wt% to 2.24 wt%) of cottonseed meal (CM) as well as creates the pore structure. Most importantly, the enzymolytic process can enhance the O content and improve the activation efficiency of potassium citrate. The optimized CCM-800-2 with hierarchical porous structure and high O (11.33 at%) content exhibits a high specific capacitance of 364 F g -1 in 6 M KOH electrolyte. In addition, the assembled potassium citrate-chitosan gel electrolyte-based symmetric supercapacitor with 20 mg cm -2 mass loading of active material shows a high energy density of 28.8 Wh kg -1 . This study provides an efficient enzyme assisted pretreatment and low activator ratio strategy to prepare biomass-based porous carbon, and expects to fabricate more carbon materials using other carbon precursors.

Synergistic reinforcement mechanism of basalt fiber/cellulose nanocrystals/polypropylene composites

Dingquan Song,Bin Wang,Wencan Tao,Xi Wang,Wei Zhang,Mingfeng Dai,Jinyang Li,Zhuowan Zhou

In this article, we prepared novel basalt fiber (BF)-reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites based on the synergistic reinforcement of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). First, we compared the enhancement effect of CNCs and silane coupling agent-modified BFs on PP, showing that the enhancement effect of the former was more significant. Subsequently, to further improve the mechanical properties of the composites, CNCs were introduced into the BF-reinforced PP composite system as the third phase, and the results suggested that their combination with BFs could synergistically strengthen the PP matrix composites. Simultaneously, the study also shows that when the mass percentage of CNCs and BFs are 1 and 30%, respectively, the composite achieves the highest mechanical strength, which is 64.31% higher than that of the PP matrix. The systematic characterization revealed the synergistic enhancement mechanism: on the one hand, CNCs not only promoted the improvement of PP crystallinity by heterogeneous nucleation but also formed a wedge-shaped structure between them and BFs through hydrogen bonding to prevent PP molecular movement; on the other hand, the BFs promote not only the extrusion crystallization of the resin matrix but also the network structure formed by the appropriate content of BFs can realize the rapid transmission of external stress.

Synthesis of fluorescent probes based on cellulose for Fe2+ recognition

Yun Lin,Cheng Xinjian

Abstract As the plentiful and easily accessible natural polymer, cellulose is insoluble in most organic solvents. Improving the solubility of cellulose is necessary. In this work, cellulose-based fluorescent probes were prepared by chemical modification, and they could be dissolved in organic-water mixed solvent. The obtained cellulose based fluorescent probes could selectively recognize Fe 2+ in H 2 O/DMSO (1:2, v/v) or H 2 O/DMF (1:2, v/v) system. Firstly, through the esterification reaction between −OH on cellulose and acryloyl chloride, cellulose derivatives with −C = C were prepared. Secondly, via thiol-ene click reaction between −C = C on cellulose and −SH on cysteamine, −NH 2 groups at the chain ends are attached to cellulose. At the same time, three small molecular derivatives (N1, N2, N3) from 4-bromo-1,8-naphthalene anhydride were synthesized. Finally, the reaction between –NH 2 on cellulose and –CO–O–CO– on 4-bromo-1,8-naphthalene anhydride derivatives occurred readily. By this method, three cellulose-based fluorescent probes (CN1, CN2, CN3) were prepared successfully. These as-prepared fluorescent probes could be easily dissolved in H 2 O/DMSO or H 2 O/DMF mixed solvents. Fluorescence detection measurements indicate that the probes could selectively detect Fe 2+ . The fluorescence is quenched after the probes contacting with Fe 2+ , which are turn-off fluorescent probes. In addition, the prepared probes could be fabricated into cellulose membrane by a simple method for portable detection of Fe 2+ . The prepared cellulose-based fluorescent probes could be used as macromolecular sensors for Fe 2+ detection, and could be processed into cellulose-friendly materials, which are expected to be used in environmental systems. Synthesis of Superhydrophobic Cellulose Stearoyl Ester for Oil/Water Separation

Qian Yang,Weiyin Su,Jianquan Hu,Yan Xu,Zhong Liu,Lanfeng Hui

Developing fluorine-free superhydrophobic and biodegradable materials for oil/water separation has already become an irresistible trend. In this paper, we designed two biopolymer oil/water separation routes based on cellulose stearoyl ester (CSE), which was obtained via the acylation reaction between dissolving pulp and stearoyl chloride homogeneously. The CSE showed a superhydrophobic property, which could selectively adsorb oil from the oil/water mixture. Additionally, the CSE was emulsified with an oxidized starch (OS) solution, and the resulting latex was used to impregnate commercial, filter base paper, finally obtaining a hydrophobic and oleophilic membrane. The SEM revealed the membrane had hierarchical micro/nanostructures, while the water contact angle indicated the low surface energy of the membrane, all of which were attributed to the CSE. The membrane had high strength and long durability due to the addition of OS/CSE, and the separation efficiency was more than 99% even after ten repeated uses.Keywords:oil/water separation;adsorption;hydrophobic;membrane
