Development of multifunctional copper alginate and bio-polyurethane bilayer coated fertilizer: Controlled-release, selenium supply and antifungal

Xiaoxiao Ma,Shugang Zhang,Yuechao Yang,Zhaohui Tong,Tianlin Shen,Zhen Yu,Jiazhuo Xie,Yuanyuan Yao,Bin Gao,Yuncong C. Li,Mohamed I.D. Helal

Bio-based controlled release fertilizers (BCRFs) are cost-effective and renewable thus gradually replacing petroleum-based controlled release fertilizers (CRFs). However, most of the study mainly focused on modifying BCRFs to improve controlled-release performance. It is necessary to further increase the functionality of BCRF for expanding the application. A multifunctional double layered bio-based CRF (DCRF) was prepared. Urea was used as the core of fertilizer, bio-based polyurethane was used as the inner coating, and sodium alginate and copper ions formed the hydrogel as the outer coating. In addition, mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with sodium selenate was used to modify the sodium alginate hydrogel (MSN@Se hydrogel). The results showed that the nitrogen longevity of the DCRF was much better than that of urea and BCRF. The selenium nutrient longevity of the DCRF was 40 h, much longer than that of sodium selenate. The DCRF improved the yield and nutritive value of cherry radish ( Raphanus sativus L. var.radculus pers ) with the elevated contents of selenium, an essential trace element. Moreover, the DCRF showed inhibitory effect on Fusarium oxysporum Schltdl. and could resist soil-borne fungal diseases continuously. Overall, this multifunctional fertilizer has great potential for expanding the use of BCRFs for sustainable development of agriculture.

Triple-layer composite nanofiber pad with directional liquid absorption and controlled-release chlorine dioxide for postharvest preservation

Haiyu Du,Tiantian Min,Xiaoli Sun,Liping Zhou,Xiaochun Bian,Zhu Zhu,Yongqiang Wen

Microbial infection, juice overflow, and water condensation from respiration and transpiration can cause premature spoilage of fresh produce. Here, a cellulose acetate/polyvinyl alcohol-g-polyacrylic acid/polyurethane (CA/PVA-g-PAA/PU) triple-layer nanofiber pad loaded with sodium chlorite and citric acid was prepared by electrospinning technique and thermal crosslinking, which possessed excellent liquid transfer, absorption, barrier, and antimicrobial properties. Depending on the wettability difference between the CA transfer layer and PVA-g-PAA absorbent layer, this pad could directionally transfer and absorb produce-generated liquid, preventing fresh produce from being wetted. Meanwhile, the PU barrier layer protected the paper packaging from being soaked. More importantly, absorbed liquid activated the reaction between sodium chlorite and citric acid for moisture-controlled releasing chlorine dioxide, thus inhibiting Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus , and Aspergillus niger . In addition, the pad showed desirable biocompatibility, fresh-keeping effect, and sensory influence. Therefore, the antimicrobial absorbent pad with three functional layers provided an innovative strategy for designing multifunctional packaging.

Fabrication of a dual pH-responsive and photothermal microcapsule pesticide delivery system for controlled release of pesticides

Linhuai Li,Jun Cen,Lingling Huang,Ling Luo,Guangqi Jiang

BACKGROUND The development of stimulus-responsive and photothermally controlled-release microcapsule pesticide delivery systems is a promising solution to enhance the effective utilization and minimize the excessive use of pesticides in agriculture. RESULTS In this study, an AVM@CS@TA-Fe microcapsule pesticide delivery system was developed using avermectin as the model drug, chitosan and tannic acid as the wall materials, and tannic acid–Fe complex layer as the photothermal agent. The optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscope were used to characterize the prepared microcapsule. The slow-release, UV-shielding, photothermal performance, and nematicidal activity of the microcapsule were systematically investigated. The results showed that the system exhibited excellent pH-responsive and photothermal-sensitive performances. In addition, the UV-shielding performance of the delivery system was improved. The photothermal conversion efficiency ( η ) of the system under the irradiation of near-infrared (NIR) light was determined to be 14.18%. Moreover, the nematicidal activities of the system against pine wood nematode and Aphelenchoides besseyi were greatly increased under the irradiation of light-emitting diode (LED) simulated sunlight. CONCLUSION The release of the pesticide-active substances in such a pesticide delivery system could be effectively regulated with the irradiation of NIR light or LED-simulated sunlight. Thus, the developed pesticide delivery system may have broad application prospects in modern agriculture fields. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Chitosan microspheres-based controlled release nitrogen fertilizers enhance the growth, antioxidant, and metabolite contents of Chinese cabbage

Jiahua Ma,Yahya Faqir,Yunlong Chai,Sanmei Wu,Tong Luo,Shiyu Liao,Abdul Rasheed Kaleri,Chengjia Tan,Yuxin Qing,Mohammad Talib Kalhoro,Niaz Umer,Wazir Hadir

Agriculture lands have low fertilizer retention owing to porosity and irrigation, whereas a significant portion of fertilizer is lost through denitrification, volatilization, surface run-off, and leaching, causing losses of nutrients to air and ground/surface water. Urea fertilizer readily enhances the agricultural yield but also deteriorates the quality of fertile soils. To combat such problems, researchers are seeking to formulate controlled-release or slow-release fertilizers. We used chitosan microspheres as a carrier to encapsulate urea through emulsification and cross-linking techniques to reduce the wastage of urea fertilizer due to evaporation and water flow. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were used to characterize chitosan microspheres and urea-loaded microspheres. Chitosan microspheres and urea-loaded microspheres were authenticated by FT-IR, showing 89% of urea successfully incorporated with chitosan microspheres. Then an experiment was run to compare the effects on plant growth, antioxidant and metabolite contents with and without added nitrogen fertilizer. Various amounts of urea per pot were applied to Chinese cabbage, including T1 0.5433 g, T2 0.6033 g, T3 0.8033 g, CK 0.00, while the same content of urea in chitosan microspheres as T4, T5, T6, and T0 (no urea), respectively. The results indicated that chitosan microspheres-based controlled release nitrogen fertilizers (Cm-CRNFs) had higher seed germination (96%), plant height (17.04 cm), number of leaves (11.00), and leaf length (110.19 mm) as compared to urea and control treatments. In addition, Cm-CRNFs treatment enhanced net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, fluorescence, dark respiration rate, total sugar, proteins, flavonoids, and polyphenols. Overall, Cm-CRNFs showed promising results in all treatments for all tested physiochemical and growth parameters. It is concluded that controlled release urea fertilizers based on chitosan microspheres can be developed with a simple process. The fertilizers are biocompatible, economically viable, and environment-friendly, and have the potential to prolong the release of macronutrients and micronutrients for plant growth.

Dense and superhydrophobic biopolymer-coated large tablet produced with energy efficient UV-curing for controlled-release fertilizer

Mingchuan Yang,Shan Li,Shugang Zhang,Bin Gao,Zhaohui Tong,Dongdong Cheng,Denglun Chen,Ruya Huang,Yuechao Yang

Large tablet controlled-release fertilizers (LCRFs) can significantly improve nutrient utilization and reduce coating costs. However, traditional petrochemical coating materials are expensive and non-renewable. Furthermore, conventional heat-curing coating process is both time and energy consuming and severely impairs the controlled-release characteristics of LCRFs. To solve above problems, green processes using renewable biomaterials have become the research hotspot for the new generation of LCRFs. In this work, bio-based polyurethane acrylate (BPUA), synthesized from castor oil, was used to coat large tablet by an innovative UV-curing process for controlled-release fertilizer to overcome the drawbacks of the heat-curing process. Furthermore, BPUA was modified with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and thiol grafted nanosilica (TNS) to prepare dense and superhydrophobic biopolymer-coated large tablet controlled-release fertilizer (DSBCF). The DSBCF exhibited remarkable controlled-release characteristics with a nitrogen release longevity of nearly 120 days, requiring only 4% of the coating materials. This research provides an efficient UV-curing strategy to manufacture energy saving, superior performance and biopolymer-coated LCRFs. It can solve bottlenecks that limit the development of coated fertilizers and provide theoretical and technical support for the green upgrade of the industry.

Hao Li,Jin Wang,Yu Luo,Bo Bai,Fangli Cao

For improving the mechanical strength of controlled release fertilizer (CRF) hydrogels, a novel material ofChlorellawas employed as a bio-based filler to prepare chitosan–chlorella hydrogel beads with physical crosslink method. Here, the synthesis mechanism was investigated, and the chitosan–chlorella hydrogel beads exhibited enhanced mechanical stability under centrifugation and sonication than pure chitosan hydrogel beads.Chlorellabrought more abundant functional groups to original chitosan hydrogel, hence, chitosan–chlorella hydrogel beads represented greater sensitivity and controllable response to external factors including pH, salt solution, temperature. In distilled water, the hydrogel beads with 40 wt%Chlorellareached the largest water absorption ratio of 42.92 g/g. Moreover, the mechanism and kinetics process of swelling behavior of the chitosan–chlorella hydrogel beads were evaluated, and the loading and releasing of humic acid by the hydrogel beads as a carrier material were pH-dependent and adjustable, which exhibit the potential of chitosan–chlorella hydrogel beads in the field of controlled release carrier biomaterials. Keywords:hydrogel;controlled release;swelling;Chlorella;pH sensitivity

Azeotropic Distillation-Induced Self-Assembly of Mesostructured Spherical Nanoparticles as Drug Cargos for Controlled Release of Curcumin

Long Chen,Xin Fu,Mei Lin,Xingmao Jiang

Methods of large-scale controllable production of uniform monodispersed spherical nanoparticles have been one of the research directions of scientists in recent years. In this paper, we report an azeotropic distillation-induced evaporation self-assembly method as a universal method, and monodispersed hydrophobic ordered mesoporous silica nanospheres (MHSs) were successfully synthesized by this method, using triethoxymethylsilane (MTES) as the silica precursor and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as the template. SEM and TEM images showed good monodispersity, sphericity, and uniform diameter. Meanwhile, SAXS and N2adsorption–desorption measurements demonstrated a highly ordered lamellar mesostructure with a large pore volume. The model drug, curcumin was successfully encapsulated in MHSs for drug delivery testing, and their adsorption capacity was 3.45 mg g−1, which greatly improved the stability of curcumin. The release time when net release rate of curcumin reached 50% was extended to 6 days. Keywords:drug delivery;curcumin;azeotropic distillation;self-assembly;hydrophobic;mesoporous silica nanospheres

Excellent synergistic antifouling polymers based on controlled release of cinnamic acid and hydrolysis-induced fluorinated micro/nanostructure

Zhongqiang Yu,Wen Sun,Lida Wang,Zhengqing Yang,Han Zhang,Guichang Liu,Qian Zhang

A new type of acrylate zinc fluorinated polymer (AZFP) is designed and successfully prepared through grafting basic zinc 4-hydroxycinnamate onto the side chain of acrylate fluorinated polymers via dehydration reaction. The Zn(II) (COO–Zn–COO) in the polymer can hydrolyze in seawater so as to slowly release green antibacterial p -coumaric acid ( p -CA) and simultaneously expose hydrophobic fluorinated side chains to form a fluorinated micro/nanostructure surface with excellent antifouling properties. In addition, lab results reveal that fouling organisms such as E. coli , bovine serum albumin (BSA), and chlorella are hard to adhere to and colonize on the polymer surface. Significantly, marine field tests demonstrate that the polymer has an excellent static anti-biofouling performance for over 240 days without resorting to adding any biocidal or toxic agents. This work provides a novel synergistic strategy for coordinating multiple green antifouling mechanisms to work together effectively, which would aid the development of environmentally friendly antifouling polymers.

Vancomycin-loaded silica coatings for controlled release of drug and Si ions to repair infected bone defects

Shiqi Xiao,Li Yuan,Jiangshan Liu,Gen Li,Qin Zou,Yi Zuo,Jidong Li,Yubao Li

Promoting bone regeneration while inhibiting bacterial infection is still clinical challenge in the repair of infectious bone defects. Herein, a vancomycin-loaded silica coating with controlled release of drug and Si ions was prepared on polymer matrix via layer-by-layer assembly, to construct a functional composite coating scaffold with antibacterial function and enhanced bone regeneration capacity. Different release behavior and antibacterial effect were achieved by alternating or sequential deposition on the scaffold surface. In vitro study showed that both the alternating and the sequential coatings could promote osteogenic differentiation of bone mesenchymal stem cells, and the sequential coating exhibited a higher bacteriostatic rate of 97 % against Staphylococcus aureus . In vivo study of infectious bone defect model demonstrated that the sequential coating with an outer layer of vancomycin allowed more sufficient antibacterial treatment in the early stage of infection and achieved superior bone regeneration consequently. Transcriptomic analysis indicated that the vancomycin loading in the silica coating played an antibacterial role without interfering with the bone-promoting process of silicon ions, and revealed that the mechanism of osteogenic promotion was based on the activation of osteo/angio-genic related genes expression and corresponding signaling pathways. This study demonstrates an effective strategy to design functional composite scaffolds for complex infectious bone repair.

Multimodal nanoporous silica nanoparticles functionalized with aminopropyl groups for improving loading and controlled release of doxorubicin hydrochloride

Xin Wang,Chang Li,Na Fan,Jing Li,Zhonggui He,Jin Sun

The purpose of this study was to develop amino modified multimodal nanoporous silica nanoparticles (M-NSNs-NH 2 ) loaded with doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX), intended to enhance the drug loading capacity and to achieve controlled release effect. M-NSNs were functionalized with aminopropyl groups through post-synthesis. The contribution of large pore sizes and surface chemical groups on DOX loading and release were systemically studied using transmission electron microscope (TEM), nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurement, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), zeta potential analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ultraviolet spectrophotometer (UV). The results demonstrated that the NSNs were functionalized with aminopropyl successfully and the DOX molecules were adsorbed inside the nanopores by the hydrogen bonding. The release performance indicated that DOX loaded M-NSNs significantly controlled DOX release, furthermore DOX loaded M-NSNs-NH 2 performed slower controlled release, which was mainly attributed to its stronger hydrogen bonding forces. As expected, we developed a novel carrier with high drug loading capacity and controlled release for DOX.

Multifunctional γ-Cyclodextrin-Based Metal–Organic Frameworks as Avermectins Carriers for Controlled Release and Enhanced Acaricidal Activity

Huiping Chen,Yongpan Shan,Chunli Xu,Muhammad Bilal,Pengyue Zhao,Chong Cao,Hongjun Zhang,Qiliang Huang,Lidong Cao

A controlled pesticide delivery system has attracted considerable attention in recent years. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), which are one of the most rapidly developing porous materials, have been used as pesticide carriers. However, the inherent toxicity of reported metal nodes or the expensiveness of organic ligands is not desirable, which limits the practical application of such pesticide-loaded MOF delivery systems. γ-Cyclodextrin-based MOFs (γ-CD–MOFs) are considered as a green renewable framework material; however, it has been less exploited as a multifunctional pesticide carrier in agricultural applications. In this study, avermectins (AVM) were loaded into γ-CD–MOFs (AVM−γ-CD–MOFs) with a loading content of 20.41% by physical absorption. AVM−γ-CD–MOFs exhibited pH-responsive release profiles and had better stability under photoirradiation. Moreover, it could promote the growth of cotton roots and stems, improve the chlorophyll content, and decrease malondialdehyde content to a certain extent by facilitating the activities of peroxidase. Compared with AVM technical concentrate wettable powder, the AVM−γ-CD–MOF wettable powder exhibited a better acaricidal activity against Panonychus citri (McGregor). In short, this research explores the feasibility of γ-CD–MOFs as a platform for potential application in sustainable plant protection.

Smart controlled-release avermectin nanopesticides based on metal–organic frameworks with large pores for enhanced insecticidal efficacy

Jincan Liu,Dejin Xu,Guangchun Xu,Xiaona Li,Jiangtao Dong,Xingkun Luan,Xuezhong Du

Nanopestcides based on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted great attention. Highly stable mesoporous metal–organic framework PCN-777 with large pores can accommodate the biologically active insecticide avermectin (AVM) of relatively large molecular dimensions. In this work, PCN-777 nanoparticles were synthesized for the creation of double-gated nanopesticides with sodium lignosulfonate (SL) and chitosan. The double gatekeepers could realize excellent sealing performance to prevent premature leakage of AVM. The double-gated PCN-777 based nanopesticides could achieve the controlled release of AVM in response to pH, laccase, phosphate, and phytic acid (PA), which are related to the physiological environments of pests and crops. The PA-triggered controlled release of loaded cargos in MOF-based delivery systems was reported for the first time. This is the first example of PCN-777 drug/pesticide delivery system and also the first case of controlled-release MOF-based AVM nanopesticides, and the mechanisms of the stimuli-responsive controlled pesticide release were clearly elucidated. The nanopesticides prevented the ultraviolet photolysis of AVM owing to the PCN-777 organic ligands and SL coating. The nanopesticides had high insecticidal efficacy and field control efficacy against the pests Spodoptera litura Fabricius on cabbage, in comparison with traditional pesticide formulations, and the nanopesticides had no influence on plant growth and showed high biosafety toward non-target organisms and human cells. The smart controlled-release nanopesticides show high potential and application prospect in ecological agriculture.
