A novel carbon-chain increasing valorization of furfural (FUR), a cheap bio-based platform compound, has been successfully performed via the catalytic oxidative condensation process with mono-dispersed palladium oxide catalyst. For the reaction of furfural, n-propanol and O 2 , the PdO@TiO 2 exhibited a prominent catalytic activity in which a 77.8% conversion of FUR with 89.2% selectivity of 3-(furan-2-yl)-2-methylacrylaldehyde was obtained. Based on the XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, XPS, and UV–vis results of catalysts, it was concluded that high activity is associated with particle size, uniform distribution of palladium oxide and surface area of the support. Moreover, the recycling experiments confirmed that mono-dispersed palladium oxide catalyst was stable, in which it still kept a good catalytic performance after being recycled for five times. This provided a new route for the selective transformation of the hemicellulose-derived platform compounds.

We present here a study of the production of furfural from xylose and wheat straw using the chromium phosphate (CrPO 4 ) with Lewis and Brønsted acidity as a highly efficient catalyst in the water/tetrahydrofuran (THF) biphasic system. The effects of various reaction parameters including reaction temperature, reaction time, system, and catalyst dosage were explored to evaluate the product yield. Under CrPO 4 catalysis, an excellent furfural yield could reach 88% from the xylose at 160 °C for 60 min. Meanwhile, 67% furfural and 32% 5‑hydroxymethylfurfura (HMF) were simultaneously achieved from wheat straw at 180 °C for 90 min. Mechanistic studies suggested that the perfect catalytic activity of CrPO 4 was due to its inherent bifunctional catalysis activity. It was found that the CrPO 4 was easily to be recovered and a great catalytic activity was available after four cycles, which not only contributed to a sustainably reduced energy consumption on catalyst recovery , but also reduced the concerns associated with toxic chromium element.

Graphical The straight dope : Controlled hydrogen doping into MoO 3 supports by means of H 2 spillover was introduced to vary the metal–support interactions with Ir, thereby achieving efficient hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol under mild conditions (see figure). As promising supports, reducible metal oxides afford strong metal–support interactions to achieve efficient catalysis, which relies on their band states and surface stoichiometry. In this study, in situ and controlled hydrogen doping (H doping) by means of H 2 spillover was employed to engineer the metal–support interactions in hydrogenated MoO x -supported Ir (Ir/H−MoO x ) catalysts and thus promote furfural hydrogenation to furfuryl alcohol. By easily varying the reduction temperature, the resulting H doping in a controlled manner tailors low-valence Mo species (Mo 5+ and Mo 4+ ) on H−MoO x supports, thereby promoting charge redistribution on Ir and H−MoO x interfaces. This further leads to clear differences in H 2 chemisorption on Ir, which illustrates its potential for catalytic hydrogenation. As expected, the optimal Ir/H−MoO x with controlled H doping afforded high activity (turnover frequency: 4.62 min −1 ) and selectivity (>99 %) in furfural hydrogenation under mild conditions ( T= 30 °C, P =2 MPa), which means it performs among the best of current catalysts.

Liquid-phase catalytic hydrogenation of furfural, followed by hydration to levulinic acid has been considered as one of efficient approaches for upgrading pentose sugars. However, a two-step process is generally employed, which involves the separation and purification of the key intermediate furfuryl alcohol from the reaction mixture. To simplify this catalytic process with improved efficiency, Cu-doped niobium phosphate ( x Cu/NbP; x = 0.1–5.0 wt%, denoted as Cu loading) catalysts with different Cu loadings were prepared by impregnation and reduction, which could catalyze furfural conversion to levulinic acid through a one pot single-step process. The as-prepared x Cu/NbP catalysts were characterized by H 2 -TPR, XRD, NH 3 -TPD, XPS, the pore size and pore volume and pyridine-adsorption FT-IR. In this study, the effect of Cu loading, formic acid amount, support type, reaction temperature/time and catalyst reusability on the reaction were investigated. It was found that 1.5 wt% Cu/NbP loading exhibited predominant catalytic activity in the cascade conversion of furfural, producing levulinic acid with a high yield of up to 67.0 mmol% using ten equivalent of formic acid at 160 °C for 3 h. Moreover, the possible mechanism was further elucidated. Also, the catalyst could be easily separated from the mixture, and reused with no remarkable loss of reactivity.

The development of highly dispersed non-precious metal nanocatalysts is of great importance for the biomass hydrogenation. In this work, a precursor of Ni-citrate complex was formed by using cheap citric acid as a complexing agent and carbon source, and a highly dispersed nickel catalyst with a carbon-encapsulated structure was successfully prepared by a facile pyrolysis . The catalyst obtained at a pyrolysis temperature of 400 °C (Ni-CA-400) displayed a larger specific surface area, richer defect sites in the carbon layer , and uniform Ni nanoparticles (4.8 ± 0.7 nm). In the furfural (FAL) hydrogenation reaction, Ni-CA-400 delivered a high tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol yield of 99.8 % under mild conditions (80 °C, 5 mmol FAL, 25 mg catalyst), maintaining relatively constant hydrogenation activity and Ni particle size in five consecutive cycles. The excellent catalytic performance and stability of Ni-CA-400 can be attributed to its unique carbon-encapsulated structure, which not only effectively avoids the migration and aggregation of active Ni particles during the preparation process, but also protects the metal Ni nanoparticles from oxidation in exposure to air. The kinetic studies showed that Ni-CA-400 exhibited high turnover frequency (TOF) for the hydrogenation of both C O and C C, making it a potential industrial catalyst for FAL hydrogenation.

A novel carbon solid acid catalyst was synthesized by the sulfonation of carbonaceous material which was prepared by carbonization of sucrose using 4-BDS as a sulfonating agent. TEM, N 2 adsorption–desorption, elemental analysis, XPS and FT-IR were used to characterize the catalyst. Then, the catalyst was applied for the conversion of xylose and corn stalk into furfural in GVL. The influence of the reaction time, temperature and dosage of catalyst on xylose dehydration were also investigated. The Brønsted acid catalyst exhibited high activity in the dehydration of xylose, with a high furfural yield of 78.5% at 170 °C in 30 min. What’s more, a 60.6% furfural yield from corn stalk was achieved in 100 min at 200 °C. The recyclability of the sulfonated carbon catalyst was perfect, and it could be reused for 5 times without the loss of furfural yields.

5-(Hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) is an important platform chemical, but the large scale production is limited by its instability. In this research, 5-[(formyloxy)methyl]furfural (FMF), derived from HMF, was produced directly from cellulose in formic acid reaction system with a yield of 33.4 mol% at 150 °C for 2 h. Among numerous metal salt catalysts screened in this study, alkali metal bromides were found to be effective in catalyzing cellulose conversion to FMF. Bromide anions facilitation of the esterification of HMF to form FMF was confirmed. In addition, the effects of water, acid and other reaction parameters also were investigated when NaBr was used as the catalyst. Up to 2% of water or acid in this reaction system did not impact on the FMF yield. Increasing the temperature for every 20 °C from 130 °C to 170 °C halved the reaction time but did not change the maximum yield. FMF was more hydrophobic and thermostable than HMF, which made it easier to be recovered. In a two-step process, FMF with a recovery of 29.4 mol% and purity of 97 mol% was obtained.

Sn-β zeolite and PTSA–POM, made from the copolymerization of p -toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA) and paraformaldehyde (POM), were used for the production of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) from glucose in an environmentally friendly solvent system including γ-valerolactone (GVL) and H 2 O. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, solvent, and catalyst-to-reactant ratio on the production of HMF were investigated. The combination of the Brønsted acid and Lewis acid catalysts largely improved the catalytic system and resulted in the production of HMF in 60.1 % yield at 140 °C in 30 min. The presence of water in the solvent had a positive influence on the production of HMF from glucose. The combination of the two catalysts also improved the catalytic performance for the production of HMF from cellulose and corn stalk.

An environmentally benign and homogeneous base-free route for 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural (HMF) aerobic oxidation to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) in water was reported using Mg–Al–CO3 hydrotalcite-supported Pd nanoparticles (xPd/HT-n) as catalyst. The influences of the Mg/Al molar ratio of hydrotalcite and Pd loading amount on the catalytic performance of these catalysts were originally systematically investigated. These catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic activity and FDCA selectivity in the HMF oxidation, especially for 2%Pd/HT-5 and 2%Pd/HT-6; >99.9% FDCA yields were achieved for 8 h under ambient pressure and homogeneous base-free conditions. The remarkably improved catalytic performance could be attributed to the suitable basicity of the Mg–Al–CO3 hydrotalcite and the abundant OH– groups on the surface of hydrotalcite. The plausible reaction mechanism was proposed based on the results of a series of controlled experiments. Furthermore, these catalysts were quite stable and could be reused at least five times without obvious loss in reaction activity.

Selective hydrogenation of furfural (FUR) derivable from pentose is one of crucial route to upgrade biomass. In this work, a rapid and mild approach has been developed for the quantitative production of furfuryl alcohol from FUR at room temperature in several minutes as short as 5 min with the presence of readily available KF and polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) that is a nontoxic and cheap liquid H-donor. This catalytic system was also active for the selective hydrogenation of various aldehydes in high yields, and could be recycled with little decrease of activity. In addition, the reaction mechanism was clarified by NMR spectra.

Abstract The catalytic synthesis of 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) attracts extensive attention in the research of biomass conversion. However, it is a challenge to achieve high conversion of HMF under mild conditions with a heterogeneous catalyst, which can be easily separated and recycled. Herein, we report a novel cobalt-based catalyst (Co x O y -N@TiO 2 ) for the oxidation of HMF to DFF with 30 % aqueous tert -butyl hydroperoxide as the oxidant. A series of Co-based catalysts were prepared by a typical impregnation method, and detected by XRD, TEM and FT-IR techniques. Based on the experimental results of catalytic test, it is found that a 91 % conversion of HMF and 40 % selectivity of DFF was obtained with the Co x O y -N@TiO 2 catalyst at 80 °C within 5 h. In addition, the Co x O y -N@TiO 2 can be recycled up to five times without significant loss of activity. Graphical Abstract The efficient oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural, a biomass-derived platform compound, to produce 2,5-diformylfuran is achieved using Co x O y -N@TiO 2 catalyst under mild conditions.

The dynamic evolution of catalyst structures during the electrocatalytic reaction has seriously hindered our comprehensive understanding of catalytic processes and pathways. In this work, we report that the metal-sulfide (ReS 2 /Co 9 S 8 ) heterostructure has multiple synergistic effects, enhancing the furfural oxidation reaction (FOR) coupling with hydrogen evolution (HER). Under cathodic reduction conditions, H 2 production can be promoted at specific active sites by the original heterostructure of ReS 2 /Co 9 S 8 . Under anodic oxidation conditions, a new heterointerface of ReS 2 /Co 9 S 8 -Co(OH) 2 is in-situ reconstructed based on the original ReS 2 /Co 9 S 8 heterostructure. The new ReS 2 /Co 9 S 8 -Co(OH) 2 heterointerface induced by this ReS 2 /Co 9 S 8 heterostructure significantly enhances FOR performance in an indirect way at 1.33–1.53 V RHE , resulting in a 86.3 % faradaic efficiency (FE). The optimized composite of ReS 2 /Co 9 S 8 with different molar ratios in a two-electrode system exhibits superior performance toward HER||FOR, achieving a smaller cell voltage of 1.43 V to reach 10 mA cm −2 compared to ReS 2 ||Co 9 S 8 (1.69 V). This work verifies the reconstructed heterointerface of ReS 2 /Co 9 S 8 -Co(OH) 2 for FOR and identifies the distinct catalytic mechanisms for FOR and HER.
