Development of an efficient technique for accurate and sensitive dibutyl phthalate (DBP) determination is crucial for food safety and environment protection. An ultrasensitive molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) voltammetric sensor was herein engineered for the specific determination of DBP using poly-l-lysine/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/porous graphene nanocomposite (PLL/PEDOT−PG) and poly(o-phenylenediamine)-imprinted film as a label-free and sensing platform. Fabrication of PEDOT−PG nanocomposites was achieved through a simple liquid–liquid interfacial polymerization. Subsequently, poly-l-lysine (PLL) functionalization was employed to enhance the dispersibility and stability of the prepared PEDOT−PG, as well as promote its adhesion on the sensor surface. In the presence of DBP, the imprinted poly(o-phenylenediamine) film was formed on the surface of PLL/PEDOT−PG. Investigation of the physical properties and electrochemical behavior of the MIP/PLL/PEDOT−PG indicates that the incorporation of PG into PEDOT, with PLL uniformly wrapping its surface, significantly enhanced conductivity, carrier mobility, stability, and provided a larger surface area for specific recognition sites. Under optimal experimental conditions, the electrochemical response exhibited a linear relationship with a logarithm of DBP concentration within the range of 1 fM to 5 µM, with the detection limit as low as 0.88 fM. The method demonstrated exceptional stability and repeatability and has been successfully applied to quantify DBP in plastic packaging materials.

Chromium (Cr(VI)) and phosphate contaminants in wastewater pose severe threats to ecosystems and human health. To address this challenge, we engineered a novel molecular-scale organic-inorganic hybrid material (Lys-HZO) through facile integration of lysine (Lys) with hydrated zirconium oxide (HZO). The uniform anchoring of Lys within the HZO framework significantly enhances the material’s hydrophilicity, improving the accessibility of adsorption sites both internally and externally, thus overcoming the structural limitations of traditional HZO materials. The amino and hydroxyl groups in the material create a synergistic effect through multiple mechanisms, including electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange, and redox interactions, which collectively drive the adsorption process. Batch adsorption experiments showed that the material’s adsorption capacities for Cr(VI) and phosphate were 15 and 10 times higher, respectively, than those of pure HZO. Kinetic and isothermal adsorption analyses confirmed that adsorption is primarily governed by chemisorption, while thermodynamic studies indicated the adsorption process’s spontaneous and endothermic nature. In cyclic fixed-bed column experiments under competitive ion conditions, Lys-HZO demonstrated high adsorption capacity, treating 2532 bed volumes (BV) of phosphate-containing wastewater (3 mg P/L) and 726 BV of Cr(VI)-contaminated effluent (3 mg Cr(VI)/L). The treated effluent concentrations remained below regulatory limits: < 0.5 mg P/L and < 0.2 mg Cr(VI)/L, respectively. The innovative design strategy of "molecular-scale hybridization and site synergistic activation" proposed in this study not only fully unlocks the adsorption potential of HZO materials, but also provides novel insights for developing amino acid-functionalized metal oxide hybrid materials in the field of water treatment.

The rapid growth of natural gas clathrate hydrate has been a significant safety hazard in off-shore natural gas drilling and gas transport. Alleviation of hydrate formation can be achieved by applying low-dosage hydrate inhibitors of polymers during operation. In order to combine the advantages of high adsorption potential and environmental friendliness, we study the kinetics of hydrate inhibition of amphiphilic highly branched poly(l-lysine) (PLL) by NMR relaxometry. The introduction of n-butyl and cyclohexyl groups in PLLs was found to be significantly effective in prolonging the induction times of sII clathrate hydrates. Key physical–chemical factors involved in the mechanism previously proposed by molecular dynamics simulations can be clarified by NMR relaxometry. Induction times for the formation of hydrate are associated with the interfacial water amount but are not related to the hydrogen bonding strength or dynamics of the free water component. The amphiphilic PLLs in the interface interact with the hydrate surfaces through their hydration shell. Analysis of the molecular motion and freezing kinetics of water in the fluid before and during hydrate formation reveals that the polymers can reduce the rates of hydrate growth from the free water by a factor of 5 to 10. A further significant decrease in the growth rates from small hydrate particles by a factor of 10 to 2600 was observed in the presence of the amphiphilic PLLs with n-butyl and cyclohexyl groups. The distinct crystal growth kinetics in the heterogeneous interface are influenced by the terminal alkyl groups of the polymers, with changing growth geometry or crystal shapes and consistent with the interfacial Gibbs–Thomson effect. A high Avrami index value of the isothermal crystal growth and nonfreezable water amount favors a long induction time. The PLL inhibitors adsorb to the hydrate surface and act via an interfacial mechanism.

Hydrogel-based functional dressings for wound healing have garnered increasing attention due to their excellent hydrophilicity, adjustable mechanical properties, and superior biocompatibility. In this study, a composite hydrogel was facilely fabricated through the Schiff base reaction between -poly-L-lysine modified chitosan (CS-PL) and oxidized dextran (Odex). The formed hydrogel displayed the interconnected microstructure (100–200 μm), injectability, and adjustable mechanical properties. Macroscopic observation and alternating strain rheological analysis confirmed the good self-healing ability of the hydrogel. Furthermore, with the incorporation of epigallocatechin-3-gallate, the composite hydrogel exhibited an improved reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging capability and good antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. The designed composite hydrogel dressings exhibited hemolysis rates of 0.75 ± 0.60% to 0.81 ± 0.31%, indicating their excellent hemocompatibility. Moreover, CCK-8 analysis and fluorescent images confirmed the excellent cytocompatibility of the hydrogels after co-culturing with NIH 3T3 cells for various periods. The above results offer a promising strategy for preparing functional hydrogel dressings via -PL modification on CS for wound healing applications.

Preparing wound dressing with dual-delivery of antioxidant and antibacterial agents is highly desirable in clinical wound treatment. Herein, a series of coaxial nanofiber membranes loaded with antioxidant tea polyphenols (TP) in the core and antibacterial ε-poly (L-lysine) (ε-PL) in the shell layer were successfully fabricated by coaxial electrospinning. The physicochemical characterizations by transmission electron microscopy , inverted fluorescence microscopy and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the formation of core-shell structure. The results of in vitro drug release indicated that ε-PL exhibited a fast release profile while TP released in a sustained manner, which is favorable to the achievement of quick bacteria inhibition in the initial phase as well as long-term antioxidant activity during wound healing. The antioxidant activity of coaxial nanofibers was found to be increased with the increment of TP content and incubation time . The antibacterial assays against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus demonstrated that the incorporation of ε-PL in the coaxial nanofibers led to strong antibacterial activity . Additionally, all the coaxial nanofibers possessed good cytocompatibility. Therefore, the prepared coaxial nanofibers simultaneously incorporated with ε-PL and TP are promising as potential wound dressing materials.

To obtain an efficient drug and gene co-delivery hydrogel, methoxy polyethylene glycol was reacted with the caprolactone units to form the MPEG-PCL block copolymer through the polymerization reaction, which is amphiphilic and can load the hydrophobic drugs. Then, MPEG-PCL conjugated with a multi-generation poly(L-lysine) dendron to form the guest molecule MPEG-PCL-PLLD. After interacted with α-cyclodextrin through host–guest inclusion, the drug and gene dual carrier of supramolecular hydrogel was obtained. The physical properties of the hydrogel, such as the gelation time, the hydrogel strength, or its shear viscosity, could be modulated by the hose molecule of α-cyclodextrin content. MPEG-PCL-PLLD could co-load the drug and gene effectively. After gelation, the loaded drug and gene could be released sustainedly, and the release rate of them was also modulated by the α-cyclodextrin content. The supramolecular hydrogel showed a sustained effect on tumor cells and could induce the cell apoptosis sustainedly. Moreover, the co-delivery strategy was superior to only drug or gene used in tumor cell inhibition. This supramolecular hydrogel as the high-efficiency and sustained co-delivery system showed a promising application in a long-term tumor therapy.

In order to improve the emulsion gel properties of PSE (pale, soft, and exudative)-like chicken meat protein isolate (PPI), effect of different addition of l -lysine (L-Lys) on the emulsifying and gel properties of PPI-sunflower oil emulsion were studied by comparing control groups (pure PPI groups (PPI), only added L-Lys (Lys) and sunflower oil (SO)). Compared with control groups, adding L-Lys to the PPI emulsion resulted in a decrease in particle size and uniform distribution, the stability of emulsion was increased, and the gel exhibited higher elastic (G′), better stability and more compact microstructure was formed. Especially when 0.2 % L-Lys was added to the emulsion system, the particle size of emulsion was reduced by 76.16 %, the emulsion gel strength was increased by 286.84 %, the centrifugal loss was reduced by 51.98 % ( P < 0.05). Therefore, L-Lys can be viewed as a viable method for enhancing the functional properties of PPI

A thermal/pH-sensitive interpenetrating network (IPN) hydrogel was prepared facilely from starch and poly(α- l -lysine) through amino-anhydride and azide-alkyne double-click reactions in one pot. The synthesized polymers and hydrogels were systematically characterized using different analytical techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and rheometer. The preparation conditions of the IPN hydrogel were optimized via one-factor experiments. Experimental results indicated the IPN hydrogel possessed pH and temperature sensitivity. Effect of different parameters (pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, ionic strength , and temperature) on adsorption behavior were investigated in monocomponent system with cationic methylene blue (MB) and anionic Eosin Y (EY) as model pollutants. The results indicated that the adsorption process of the IPN hydrogel for MB and EY followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorption data for MB and EY fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating monolayer chemisorption. The good adsorption performance was due to various active functional groups (–COOH, –OH, –NH 2 , etc.) in the IPN hydrogel. The strategy described here opens up a new way for preparing IPN hydrogel. The as-prepared hydrogel exhibits potential application and bright prospects as an adsorbent in wastewater treatment.

This work successfully synthesized γ-(2,3-glycidoxy) propyltrimethoxysilane (GPTS) functionalized silica nanoparticles (GSiO 2 ). The obtained GSiO 2 was grafted onto lysine-modified graphene oxide (LGO) by covalent bonding to prepare GLGO nano-hybrid material, and then the prepared GLGO nano-hybrid material was used as a nano-filler for the waterborne epoxy resin (WEP) matrix. The fracture surface of the composite film was investigated by SEM, it was observed that GLGO was uniformly distributed in the WEP matrix. In addition, the contribution of GO, LGO and GLGO on the corrosion anticorrosive performance of WEP coatings in 3.5% NaCl(aq) was estimated via potentiodynamic polarization test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Experimental data exhibited that the impedance modulus of the GLGO/WEP coating system with only 0.1 wt% GLGO added at |Z| f = 0.01 Hz was about two orders of magnitude higher than that of the pure WEP coating after 40 days immersion. Therefore, GLGO nano-hybrid material was an effective green anti-corrosion nano-filler for WEP matrix.

In this work, an ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor was constructed using poly- L -lysine (PLL) as a novel co-reactant of luminol and poly(luminol/aniline) nanorods loaded reduced graphene oxide ( [email protected] ) as nanoprobe, which enable highly sensitivity detection of glutathione (GSH). To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that PLL was used for the co-reactant of luminol. Notably, about a 5-fold enhancement was obtained compared with the individual [email protected] using GCE . Due to the remarkable quenching effect between the excited state of PLL and the reduced form of GSH in the ECL system of luminol/PLL, the ECL sensing platform exhibited wide linear ranges of 1.0 × 10 −9 –1.0 × 10 −4 M and 1.0 × 10 −4 –1.0 × 10 −2 M and a low detection limit of 7.7 × 10 −10 M. Simultaneously, the biosensor was also successfully applied to detect GSH in human serum sample with high recoveries. Hence, this work would open a new platform for the wide application of PLL in immunoassay and various sensors.

Rutin is a bioflavonoid found in many plants and derived foods, accordingly, rutin likely interacts with α-amino acids such as Lys, Ile, His or Glu to give Maillard reaction products (MRPs). The heated rutin-Lys system exhibited highest brown intensity and in vitro antioxidant activities. The 30–50 kDa rutin-Lys fraction had higher in vitro antioxidant activities than the other fractions, and at a dose of 0.4 mg/ml preserved over 90% cell viability for HepG2 cells exposed to H 2 O 2 . The dose-dependent protective effects against H 2 O 2 -induced oxidative stress of the rutin-Lys MRPs may involve the inhibition of reactive oxygen species generation, enhancement of the superoxide dismutase and catalase activities, along with the activation of the Nrf2-dependent pathway and upregulation of phase II antioxidant genes (including NQO1, HO-1, GCLG, and GCLM). Practical applications Rutin is widely distributed in vegetables and grains. The Maillard reaction is a common reaction occurring during food processing, and produces Maillard reaction products (MRPs) with distinct processing and biological properties. This study shows that a 30-min thermal treatment at 120°C generates antioxidative MRPs in the rutin-Lys, rutin-His, rutin-Ile and rutin-Glu model systems, which can directly inhibit reactive oxygen species generation and enhance SOD and CAT activities while activating the Nrf2-dependent pathway and upregulating the expression of phase II detoxifying antioxidant genes. Therefore, for food systems containing phenolic antioxidants and proteins (such as rutin and Lys), one may enhance the antioxidant properties of these food systems through a 30-min thermal treatment at 120°C. Also, the resultant rutin-Lys MRPs may be isolated and used as commercial preparations of natural antioxidants.

It is challenging to achieve the room-temperature self-healing polymers with high healing efficiency and excellent integrated mechanical properties, which are highly desirable in various fields. Herein, we propose a new design strategy to prepare room temperature self-healable and recyclable polyurethanes (PUs), in which both dynamic metal–lysine coordination bonds and dual H-bonds were simultaneously embedded. At first, three metal–lysine coordination complexes, i.e. Zn(Lys) 2 , Cu(Lys) 2 and Mg(Lys) 2 , were synthesized and characterized, which were used as chain-extenders for the subsequent preparation of PUs. These complexes of Zn(Lys) 2 , Cu(Lys) 2 and Mg(Lys) 2 exhibited a distinct behavior after incorporation into PUs. The mechanical and self-healing properties of these metal-lysine containing PUs (PU-M−x, M = Zn 2+ , Cu 2+ and Mg 2+ , x represents molar percentage of M(Lys) 2 in chain extenders) can be easily tuned by simply adjusting the type and the amount of metal–lysine coordination complexes added. The PU films displayed excellent mechanical properties with the tensile strength at break varying from 17.2 to 43.0 MPa, the ultimate elongation above 657.0 % and toughness above 45.0 MJ m −3 . Among these elastomers, both PU-Zn-20 and PU-Mg-10 shows outstanding self-healing efficiency over 92.0 % based on toughness at 25 °C for 24 h due to the the multiple dynamic interactions including dynamic metal–lysine coordination bonds and hydrogen bonds within their networks. In particular, PU-Zn-20 exhibits the best comprehensive properties, of which tensile strength, breaking strain, and toughness are as high as 25.4 MPa, 832.3 %, and 59.8 MJ m −3 , respectively. Furthermore, these PUs could also be reprocessed with excellent recovered mechanical properties. We demonstrate that the self-healing elastomers have a potential application as a flexible substrate for the easy fabrication of healable electrodes.
