Enhanced photocatalytic CO2 conversion over 0D/2D CsPbBr3/BiOCl S-scheme heterojunction via boosting charge separation

Fangzheng Qi,Zengsheng Guo,Yuhan Zhang,Xue-Na Tang,Yiqiang Sun,Bo Xu,Guang-Ning Liu,Cuncheng Li

The stable contact of heterogeneous interfaces and the substantial exposure of active sites are crucial for enhancing the photocatalytic performance of semiconductor catalysts. However, most reported two-dimensional (2D)/2D CsPbBr3 and BiOCl heterostructures are fabricated using electrostatic self-assembly methods, which exhibit significant deficiencies in precise interface quality control and effective active site exposure. In this study, we fabricate a zero-dimensional (0D)/2D CsPbBr3/BiOCl heterojunction via a two-step calcination method, achieving an efficient direct S-scheme configuration. Optimizing interfacial contact and band alignment between CsPbBr3 quantum dots and BiOCl nanosheets enhances cross-plane charge transfer, promoting superior charge separation. This 0D/2D CsPbBr3/BiOCl heterojunction exhibits enhanced carrier mobility and high conversion rates without cocatalysts or sacrificial agents. The mechanism underlying the accelerated S-scheme charge transfer is comprehensively elucidated through a combination of analytical techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This study offers a novel approach for managing charge carrier segregation and mobility in CO2 reduction photocatalysts.

Interface Engineering of 0D-2D CoSe2/ZnSe@MXene Heterostructured Electrodes for High-Performance Lithium-ion Batteries

Fayun Wei,Fanghua Liang,Yanrui Zhao,Zhuyu Ji,Ruiqing Li,Hui Liu,youchao Kong,Honggang He,Weichun Huang,Chunyan Cao,Wei Zhang,Bin Fei,Mingzheng Ge,Tingting Yan

High-capacity conversion-type anodes with high volume expansion and low conductivity face limitations in meeting the high energy density demands of lithium-ion batteries. Herein, MOF-derived CoSe2/ZnSe bimetallic selenide nanoparticles are confined in layered Ti3C2Tx MXene (CoSe2/ZnSe@MX) as electrodes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries by in-situ self-assembly and selenization strategy. The interconnected conductive MXene networks not only can provide highways for charge transfer, but also can effectively accommodate the large volume expansion, improving the structural stability. Meanwhile, the bimetallic CoSe2/ZnSe nanoparticles with heterostructures and Se vacancies offer abundant redox reaction sites, promote Li-ions diffusion, and enhance Li-ions adsorption. Thus, the CoSe2/ZnSe@MX electrodes exhibit a remarkable capacity of 830.8 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, high-rate capability of 290.8 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1, and superior cycling stability with 63.1% capacity retention after 2000 cycles. Furthermore, the full cell was demonstrated practical applicability with a high capacity of 156 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C. This facile technique is promising to construct high-performance energy storage devices.

0D/2D Ti3+-TiO2/P-doped g-C3N4 S-scheme heterojunctions for efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution

Min Yuan,Ke Huang,Dongqing Dai,Hongfei Yin,Wei Zhao,Yixin Jiang,Yahui Feng

The integration of heterogeneous photocatalysts has emerged as a promising approach to boost the effectiveness of photocatalytic reactions for hydrogen evolution. In this study, we explore the synergistic effects of Ti 3+ -TiO 2 /P-doped g-C 3 N 4 heterojunctions on the enhancement of visible light-induced hydrogen generation efficiency. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of the as-prepared TPCN100 (280.38 μmol g −1  h −1 ) surpasses that of pristine P-doped g-C 3 N 4 (34.89 μmol g −1  h −1 ) and Ti 3+ -TiO 2 (39.71 μmol g −1  h −1 ) by factors of 8.0 and 7.1 respectively. Through a comprehensive investigation of the structural, electronic, and photocatalytic properties, the underlying mechanisms accountable for the observed enhancement in efficiency within the heterojunction system were elucidated. Based on the in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) examination, measurement of band edge, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, the S-scheme photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. The integration of Ti 3+ -TiO 2 and P-doped g-C 3 N 4 offers new insights into the design of advanced photocatalytic materials for sustainable energy applications.

Direct Z-Scheme 0D/2D Heterojunction of CsPbBr3 Quantum Dots/Bi2WO6 Nanosheets for Efficient Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Jichong Wang,Jin Wang,Nuoya Li,Xinyi Du,Jun Ma,Chaohua He,Zhengquan Li

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is an appealing approach to convert solar energy into high value-added chemicals. All-inorganic CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as a promising photocatalyst for reducing CO2. However, pristine CsPbBr3 has a low catalytic performance, mainly due to severe charge recombination. Herein, a 0D/2D heterojunction of CsPbBr3 QDs/Bi2WO6 nanosheet (CPB/BWO) photocatalysts is fabricated for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The CPB/BWO photocatalyst achieves excellent photocatalytic performance: the total yield of CH4/CO is 503 μmol g–1, nearly 9.5 times higher than the pristine CsPbBr3. The CPB/BWO heterojunction also exhibits much-improved stability during photocatalytic reactions. On the basis of various characterization techniques, our investigations verified a direct Z-scheme charge migration mechanism between CsPbBr3 QDs and Bi2WO6 nanosheets. The improved photocatalytic performance is originated from the high spatial separation of photoexcited charge carriers in CPB/BWO, which can also preserve strong individual redox abilities of two components. This work reports an efficient direct Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalytic system based on metal halide perovskites. The novel strategy we proposed may bring up new opportunities for the development of metal halide perovskite photocatalysts with greatly enhanced activities.

Facile construction of 0D/2D In2O3/Bi2WO6 Z-scheme heterojunction with enhanced photocatalytic activity for antibiotics removal

Qishe Yan,Zhiyuan Guo,Peiying Wang,Yanan Cheng,Chenyu Wu,Huiru Zuo

Proper interfacial contact and efficient interfacial charge transfer play a predominant role in improving the photocatalytic performance. In this work, the 0D/2D In 2 O 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 Z-scheme heterojunction was constructed successfully. The In 2 O 3 nanoparticles were immobilized on the surface of the Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets via a facile hydrothermal-calcination method. The crystal structure and photoelectrochemical properties of samples were further characterized. 15% In 2 O 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 (IB-15) exhibited optimal photocatalytic properties in degradation of tetracycline (TC) and oxytetracycline (OTC) under visible-light irradiation, and the possible degradation pathways of TC were acknowledged derived from LC-MS. According to the results of radical trapping experiments, superoxide radicals (•O 2 - ) and photogenerated holes (h + ) were predominant active species for TC degradation and a possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. The significant improvement of photocatalytic property was attributed to the unique Z-scheme heterojunction with 0D/2D architecture which facilitates the rapid separation of photo-excited carriers and expands the range of absorption spectrum .

A cosubstantial [0D+2D] CTF membrane with enhanced perm-selectivity and solar cleaning for multiscale molecular separation

Guiliang Li,Yang Liu,Jiaping Chen,Shuting Xu,Na Lu,Haibo Lin,Fu Liu

Fouling is the pending issue of conspicuous two-dimensional membranes for complex wastewater treantment. Here, we first report a hybrid-dimensional cosubstantial [0D+2D] covalent triazine framework (CTF) membrane to sort out the membrane fouling via solar-cleaning strategy. The intersertal 0D CTF-0 in lamellar membrane as “pillar” offers interspacing pathways for selective separation of sub/micrometer oily emulsions and nanometer dyes. It also acts as cosubstantial “joint” to improve electron/hole separation efficiency under sunlight irradiation, which activated peroxymonosulfate to achieve effective membrane solar-cleaning via free and non-free radical way. Both the surfactant adsorbed on the membrane and the oil and dye molecules trapped on the membrane surface by the pore sieving could all be efficiently removed via the photocatalytic degredation. The interfacial solar-thermal effect also contributed to the removal of volatile oils. This featured photocatalytic membrane prepared via hybrid-dimensional and cosubstantial CTF nanomaterials offers a promising way for sustainable fouling alleviation.

Generalized assembly of sandwich-like 0D/2D/0D heterostructures with highly exposed surfaces toward superior electrochemical performances

Xue Shuqing,Wu Guanhong,Li Mingzhong,Liu Zihan,Deng Yuwei,Han Wenqian,Lv Xuanyu,Wan Siyu,Xi Xiangyun,Yang Dong,Dong Angang

Heterostructures composed of two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets and zero-dimensional (0D) nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted increasing attention because of the synergy arising from the coupling interactions between the two mixed-dimensional components. Despite recent advances, it remains a challenge to fabricate 2D/0D heterostructures with clean and accessible surfaces, which is highly desirable for the diversity of catalytic, sensing, and energy storage applications. Herein, we report a generalized methodology that enables the facile assembly of sandwich-like 0D/2D/0D heterostructures with facilitated mass-transport channels and exposed surface active sites. A ligand-exchange strategy with HBF 4 is employed to strip off the surface-coating ligands of colloidal NPs, rendering them positively charged and dispersible in polar solvents. This allows subsequent electrostatic assembly of NPs with oppositely charged 2D nanosheets to afford sandwich-like 0D/2D/0D heterostructures. The barely covered surfaces and the advantageous architectures of such sandwich-like 0D/2D/0D heterostructures induce the desired synergistic effect, making them particularly suitable for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. We demonstrate this by employing MXene/NiFe 2 O 4 and MXene/Fe 3 O 4 heterostructures for high-performance electrocatalytic oxygen evolution and supercapacitors, respectively.

A novel 0D/2D WS2/BiOBr heterostructure with rich oxygen vacancies for enhanced broad-spectrum photocatalytic performance

Shuai Fu,Wei Yuan,Xianming Liu,Yunhui Yan,Haiping Liu,Li Li,Fengying Zhao,Jianguo Zhou

In this study, a novel 0D/2D WS 2 /BiOBr heterostructured photocatalyst with rich oxygen vacancies was fabricated by a hydrothermal method. The WS 2 QDs/BiOBr-10 heterostructures exhibited a maximum removal rate of 92% towards ciprofloxacin (CIP) within 100 min under visible-light irradiation, which was 2.63- and 2.02- folds higher activity than that of pristine BiOBr and WS 2 QDs/BiOBr-10 with poor oxygen vacancies, respectively. In addition, the removal efficiencies of this photocatalyst towards various pollutants were 99% (Lanasol Red 5B), 95% (Rhodamine B), 85% (metronidazole), 96% (tetracycline) and 41% (Bisphenol A), respectively. Besides, the simultaneous photocatalytic degradation showed the competitive interactions between these organic contaminants for the active species, decreasing the removal efficiency for CIP. However, the simultaneous photocatalytic oxidation of CIP and reduction of Cr(VI) improved the utilization efficiency of photo-induced electrons and holes, resulting in high removal efficiencies for both CIP and Cr(VI). Three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectra (3D EEMs) were used to investigate the degradation of CIP molecules. The synergistic effect of heterostructure and oxygen vacancies greatly assisted in the removal of organic pollutants, attributing to the enhanced visible-light harvesting and effective separation of photo-induced electron–hole pairs. Furthermore, trapping experiments and ESR results demonstrated that the CIP removal was dominated by the direct oxidation of holes (h + ), whereas the hydroxyl radicals ( OH) and superoxide radicals ( O 2 − ) acted as auxiliary active species. This study provides a new way to rationally design and construct active 0D/2D pattern heterojunction photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Tuning and controlling photocatalytic performance of TiO2/kaolinite composite towards ciprofloxacin: Role of 0D/2D structural assembly

Chunquan Li,Ningyuan Zhu,Xiongbo Dong,Xiaoyu Zhang,Ting Chen,Shuilin Zheng,Zhiming Sun

Lamellar kaolinite supported monodispersed TiO 2 was prepared through rational design and 0D/2D structural assembly, which showed significantly improved photocatalytic performance towards ciprofloxacin. After systematic evaluation, the pseudo-first-order kinetic constant rate of TiO 2 /kaolinite composite can reach to 0.04549 min −1 , which was 6.90 and 1.81 times higher than that of pure TiO 2 and P25, respectively. The nano-TiO 2 /kaolinite composite photocatalyst also displayed good reusability performance, only a slight decline occurred after four repeated experiments, which is beneficial for the large-scale application of photocatalysts. Various characterizations indicated that enhanced photocatalytic performance can be ascribed to the synergistic effect between natural kaolinite and the well distributed TiO 2 , which enhanced the light absorption ability, assisted the dispersion of pure TiO 2 , resulted in co-catalysis effect, improved the separation facilitation of photo-induced carriers and promoted the stronger adsorption capacity, etc. These merits effectively regulated the carriers’ lifetime and migration velocity of the photogenerated charge carriers. Considering the excellent properties of natural kaolinite (low cost, abundance, stability, etc.), our study provides a promising candidate for effective degradation of trace amounts of pharmaceutical and personal care product (PPCP) or contaminants with potential high-toxic risk.

Adjustable and pseudocapacitance-prompted Li storage via the controlled preparation of nanocomposites with 0D-2D carbon networks

Bao-Hua Hou,Ying-Ying Wang,Hong-Yan Lü,Qiu-Li Ning,Xin Yan,Dao-Sheng Liu,Yue Chen,Jiawei Wang,Xinlong Wang,Xing-Long Wu

In order to ascertain the effect of carbon networks with various dimension on the Li-storage properties of Fe 3 O 4 anode material, three Fe 3 O 4 -based nanocomposites with different dimensional carbon networks, including zero-dimensional C/Fe 3 O 4 (0D-C/F), one-dimensional carbon nanotubes/Fe 3 O 4 (1D-CNTs/F) and two-dimensional graphene/Fe 3 O 4 (2D-G/F) nanocomposites, are successfully prepared via precisely controlling the preparation processes and parameters. Their morphology, conductivity, reaction kinetics, and electrochemical properties are discussed in detail. The results show that the addition of 1D-CNTs or 2D-G in the Fe 3 O 4 results in a smaller size of Fe 3 O 4 particles, which shortens the diffusion distance of Li + , and provides a faster electron conduction pathways, as well as the flexible carbon networks will effectively relieve the internal strain during charge and discharge processes. Most importantly, it is revealed that 2D-G/F with the large surface area leads to a faster electrochemical reaction kinetic which is mainly controlled by pseudocapacitive behavior, while the electrochemical reaction kinetic of 1D-CNTs/F is dominated by the slow Li + insert process. As a result, 2D-G/F shows the best Li-storage performance with a reversible capacity of 1014 mAh g −1 in the first cycle at 0.1 C and even at a high rate of 5 C, the reversible capacity is still 513.5 mAh g −1 . Furthermore, after 100 cycles at 0.5 C, it still delivers a reversible capacity of 1125.6 mAh g −1 without capacity decay.

0D/2D Co-doped Fe2O3/g-C3N4 Z-scheme heterojunction for efficient photo-Fenton organic pollutant removal

Hongji Chen,Yan Wu,Huiping Xiao,Hongfei Yin,Qian Fei,Chunyu Yuan,Qiuyu Zhao,Yujin Zhang,Yongzheng Zhang,Woonming Lau

Owing to the low conversion efficiency of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ during the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation process, the design of an efficient Fenton-like catalyst is still a challenge. In this work, 0D/2D Co-doped Fe 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 (CNCFO) composite catalysts were constructed for organic pollutant degradation, where the Co-doping not only boosts the conversion efficiency of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ , but also acts as active site for PMS activation. Among them, CNCFO2 showed excellent catalytic performance, where 96.4% of MO could be degraded within 45 s. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that the cobalt doping promoted the cycle of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ , which was responsible for the enhanced PMS activation. Meanwhile, the good stability and reusability of CNCFO2 itself provide opportunities for its potential practical applications. Based on systematical characterizations, the Z-scheme photo-Fenton mechanism was proposed. This study offers a fresh perspective on the advancement of designing highly efficient Fenton-like catalyst for applications in the field of environmental purification.

A validated criterion for engineering 0D@2D nanocomposite to modulate amyloid peptide self-assembly and fibril disassembly

Qingxue Mu,Guanbin Gao,Zijun Zhang,Bin Zhang,Zhenhua Gu,Xinglin Liu,Liangchong Yu,Lei Shen,Taolei Sun

2D nanosheets-supported 0D nanoparticles (NPs@NSs), a typical 0D/2D nanocomposite, possess unique capabilities to modulate biological processes through non-covalent nano-bio interfacial interactions. However, the underlying molecular basis, particularly the validated criteria for quantifying the non-covalent nano-bio interfacial interaction, remain to be elucidated. In this study, we quantified the non-covalent nano-bio interfacial affinity-energies of NPs@NSs with Alzheimer’s amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides, which were divided into 0D(NPs)-peptide (E 0D-p ) and 2D(NSs)-peptide (E 2D-p ) parts. Our results classified these interactions into three distinct ranges of E 0D-p /E 2D-p  < 1, ≈1, >1. Both simulations and experiments demonstrated that NPs@NSs with E 0D-p /E 2D-p  < 1 effectively inhibited Aβ fibrillization by stabilizing its monomeric native conformation and even disassembled mature Aβ-fibrils by disrupting their β-sheet structures; whereas NPs@NSs with E 0D-P /E 2D-P ≈1 or > 1 did not exhibit such effects. These findings for the first time provide microscopic molecular insights into the non-covalent nano-bio interfacial interactions between NPs@NSs and peptide chains and offer a validated criterion for engineering 0D/2D nanocomposites to modulate amyloid peptide self-assembly and fibril disassembly, which will enhance the development of nanomedicine for Alzheimer’s and other amyloid-related diseases.
