The porous structure of anodes is crucial to the performance of intermediate-temperature solid state fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). With the rapid development of high performance cathodes, the role of anodes needs to be considered again. A hierarchical porous Ni-Ce 0.8 Sm 0.2 O 2-δ (SDC) anode consisted of ∼200 nm width, and ∼800 nm and ∼10 μm diameter pores can be formed by reducing NiO, and burning of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and starch pore-formers with a total load of 20 wt%, respectively. For single cells with Ni-SDC|SDC|Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3-δ configuration, the peak power density (PPD) (0.26–1.73 W·cm −2 ) at 723–923 K is achieved with the addition of 10 wt% starch + 10 wt% PMMA, which is 136–52 % and 86-14 % higher than that without pore-formers and with 20 wt% starch, respectively. More importantly, it has a similar long-term stability of the cell without pore-formers. The comprehensive results suggest that the apparent improvement in PPDs is primarily attributed to the increased length of effective three-phase boundaries due to the formation of a percolation network of anodes, while also highlighting the significant influence of anode/electrolyte interface polarization on the electrochemical performance of IT-SOFCs.

Cu doped SrFe 0.9- x Cu x W 0.1 O 3- δ ( x = 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) perovskites were investigated as SOFC cathode materials . The effects of Cu doping on properties of SFCW samples were studied systematically. The oxygen content (3- δ ) decreased by Cu doping, which leading to the decrement of electrical conductivity and the increment of TECs of SFCW samples. The ASR first decreases with x from 0 to 0.2 and then it increases when x up to 0.3. The ASR values are 0.161, 0.134, 0.102 and 0.117 Ω cm 2 at 800 °C for SFCW samples with x = 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3, respectively. The corresponding activation energy are 0.90, 0.88, 0.78 and 0.86 eV. The lowest ASR and activation energy for ORR of SFCW2 is a result from the joint effects of electrical conductivity , oxygen vacancy concentration and thermal expansion caused by Cu doping. The research results obtained in this study suggesting SFCW2 is a good cathode candidate for SOFC.

The low performance and insufficient catalytic activity of perovskite anodes hinder their further application in intermediate-temperature solid-oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). A novel La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Fe 0.9 Nb 0.1 Pd 0.04 O 3− δ (LSFNP) anode material has been developed with Fe–Pd co-exsolutions for IT-SOFCs. Fe 0 and Pd 0 metallic nanoparticles are confirmed to exsolve on the surface of the perovskite anode during operation under a hydrogen atmosphere. The introduced Pd exsolutions promote the charge-transfer process slightly and the H 2 -adsorption ability of the La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Fe 0.9 Nb 0.1 O 3− δ (LSFN) parent anode significantly, as metallic Pd is a conductor with excellent catalytic activity and an absorber of hydrogen that can absorb a large amount of H 2 by forming unstable chemical bonds. A single cell with the LSFNP anode exhibits high output performance (maximum power density of 287.6 mW cm −2 at T =800 °C by using humidified H 2 as the fuel), excellent redox stability, and considerable coking and sulfur tolerances. After the introduction of Pd exsolutions, the increase in the electrochemical performance is more significant under low H 2 concentrations and at low temperatures with a maximum power density ratio of the LSFNP anode cell/LSFN anode cell reaching 18 under 5 % H 2 /argon at T =650 °C. Pd-decorated LSFNP is a high-performance, redox-stable, coking-tolerant, and sulfur-tolerant anode material for IT-SOFCs, making Pd exsolution a reliable nanodecoration strategy to improve the low kinetics of perovskite anodes. Graphical Ex marks the spot : The La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Fe 0.9 Nb 0.1 Pd 0.04 O 3− δ (LSFNP) anode material with Fe–Pd co-exsolutions for intermediate-temperature solid-oxide fuel cells is prepared. The exsolved Fe 0 and Pd 0 co-exsolutions promote the charge-transfer process and H 2 -adsorption ability of the La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Fe 0.9 Nb 0.1 Pd 0.04 O 3-δ (LSFNP) anode. LSFNP anode exhibits high performance, good redox-stability, good coking and sulfur tolerance. A maximum power density of 287.6 mW cm −2 is obtained at 800 °C using humidified H 2 as the fuel. (GDC) nanocomposite materials were prepared by a modified sol–gel method to improve solid oxide fuel cell cathode performance in intermediate temperature. Metal acetates precursors and citric acid combined with ethylene glycol as complex agents were used in the sol–gel process. Nano foam-like GDC powders were introduced into the sol–gel process to get the nanocomposites with the GDC content in the range of 10–50 wt%. In addition, pure LSC nano powders were also synthesized for comparison. The crystalline phases, morphologies, and elemental distributions of the pure LSC and LSC–GDC composite powders were characterized, and their electrode performances were investigated with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results showed the GDC particles were largely covered by LSC, and the optimal GDC content was 30 wt% for the LSC–GDC electrode performance in this study.

This research addresses the issue of particle agglomeration and a low catalytic activity in the traditional sol–gel preparation of LaNi 0.5 Co 0.5 O 3 (LNCO). A new synthetic strategy is proposed, leveraging the combination of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) serving as a complexing agent and graphene nanosheet (GN) functioning as a template, successfully producing a high-activity LNCO cathode material (GN-LNCO) with a layered structure. Various characterizations confirmed that incorporating PVP and GN effectively suppressed particle agglomeration at high temperatures. The optimized GN-LNCO exhibited excellent physicochemical properties, including a specific surface area of 45.21 m 2 g −1 , a more regular mesoporous structure, a higher electronic conductivity, and a greater oxygen vacancy concentration. Electrochemical performance tests showed that the GN-LNCO cathode demonstrated an outstanding performance in solid oxide fuel cells at 800 °C, with a peak power density of 350.91 mW cm −2 . This represented an improvement of 28.65% over the conventional LNCO. Additionally, a 72 h long-term stability test of a GN-LNCO single cell revealed a voltage decay rate of only 1.60%, indicating its excellent stability. Overall, this study provides a novel material design strategy for developing high-performance cathodes, which has significant implications for advancing solid oxide fuel cell technologies.

Fibrous perovskite oxide has been the most promising cathode for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs) due to its efficient mass and charge transfer. Herein, a core–shell fiber-structured YCo0.5Fe0.5O3 (YCF)–Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.95 (GDC) cathode is synthesized via the modified electrospinning technique. These unique YCF–GDC fibers exhibit a uniform diameter of 300 nm, and the GDC particles are attached to the YCF fiber cores. The electrochemical performance demonstrates a relatively low area-specific resistance of 0.66 Ω·cm2 at 550 °C in air, which is much lower than 1.56 Ω·cm2 of pure YCF fiber cathode. Moreover, the distribution of relaxation times (DRT) analysis results indicate that the introduction of GDC nanoparticles and the core–shell structure greatly facilitate oxygen-ion conduction and charge transfer processes, and the oxygen incorporation process plays a major role in the total polarization resistance. The NiO–GDC|GDC|fibrous YCF–GDC fuel cell shows a maximum power density of 426.5 mW·cm–2 at 550 °C. These results display that the core–shell fiber-structured YCF–GDC composite oxide is a promising candidate of highly active cathode for IT-SOFCs.
