Personal thermal management technologies based on phase-change materials (PCMs) are critical for energy sustainability and human comfort, yet challenges remain in achieving high energy storage density, thermal conductivity, and shape stability simultaneously. Here, a cellulose aerogel composite by integrating ionic liquid-modified graphene oxide (IGNs) with polyethylene glycol (PEG) for personal thermal management was proposed. A three-dimensional porous IGNs/cellulose aerogel scaffold, synthesized through ionic liquid-assisted dispersion and chemical cross-linking, provides exceptional shape stability (zero leakage under 70 °C compression) and high PEG loading capacity (91%). The aerogel exhibits a considerable thermal enthalpy density (163.9 J/g), achieving a relative enthalpy efficiency of 99.5%. Moreover, the addition of 5.4 wt.% graphene oxide nanosheets (IGNs) enhances the thermal conductivity of the composite to 0.898 W/(m K −1 ), representing a 241% increase compared to composites without IGNs. Notably, the IGNs/cellulose framework enables efficient solar-thermal conversion (surface temperature rises to 172.5 °C within 20 s under 1.0 W cm −2 irradiation) and cyclic stability (0.4% latent heat loss after 30 thermal cycles). Combined with breathability (24.9% enhanced water vapor permeability) and mechanical robustness (intact structure after 24 h dynamic immersion), this work provides an effective strategy for wearable personal thermal management in complex and dynamic environments. High-performance multifunctional hydrogels exhibit immense potential for transforming health technology, particularly through applications in wearable healthcare devices and therapeutic systems. These materials are valued for their ability to closely mimic biological tissues while integrating key functional attributes. However, achieving a combination of outstanding mechanical strength, high conductivity, and self-healing properties in a single hydrogel remains challenging. In this study, we present a one-pot synthesis method for fabricating the PVA/PAM/NaCl/CB (PPNC) hydrogel, composed of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), polyacrylamide (PAM), sodium chloride, and carbon black. By leveraging physical entanglement within the PPNC network along with dynamic chemical bonds and reversible physical interactions, the hydrogel achieves superior mechanical robustness and self-healing properties. The PPNC hydrogel demonstrates impressive mechanical performance, with a tensile strength of 688 kPa and elongation over 700%, alongside high electrical conductivity (4.9 S·m–1 at 25 °C). Additionally, its exceptional antifreezing capabilities allow it to maintain these properties at −20 °C. As a proof-of-concept, the hydrogel has been successfully applied as a motion-sensing device, accurately tracking human movement for health monitoring, and as a heating device, delivering effective thermal therapy to the human body. These findings highlight the hydrogel’s significant potential in healthcare innovation, including wearable technology, biological sensors, and therapeutic devices.

Flexible and wearable devices require high-performance pressure sensors for human motion monitoring, but conventional sensors have limited deformability and complex fabrication. To overcome these issues, a composite structure incorporating conductive nanomaterials and a deformable elastomer has been proposed. However, an inherently weak adhesion between the elastomer and nanomaterials remains a practical challenge. To address this, we show a porous polymer sponge coated with Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene as an ultra-sensitive pressure sensor. The sensor is fabricated by creating a deformable elastomer sponge using a sugar template, followed by a simple dip-coating process to apply MXene nanosheets. The elastomer surface is chemically treated using surfactants to enhance the surface energy and induce electrostatic forces, thereby improving adhesion between the elastomer and MXene while maintaining the intrinsic mechanical properties of the elastomer. This stable MXene-based network ensures high sensitivity across a broad pressure range. The sensor’s low stiffness and porous structure enable rapid response to subtle pressures like breathing and gentle touch, as well as larger forces like arm bending and foot pressure. When integrated into a human-machine interface for the walking assistive device, the pressure sensors enable active control of the exoskeleton, facilitating easier joint motion for rehabilitation.

Summary Electroconductive textile yarns are of particular interest for their use as flexible and wearable sensors without compromising the properties and comfort of usual textiles. However, the detection of fine actions of the human body is quite challenging since it requires both the relatively higher sensitivity and stability of the sensor. Herein, highly sensitive, ultra-stable, and extremely durable piezoresistive wearable sensors were prepared by loading N-doped rGO and polydopamine-coated carbon nanotubes into silicon rubber tube. The wearable sensors thus produced show an excellent ability to sense subtle movement or stimuli with good sensitivity and repeatability. Furthermore, by bending the straight conductive silicon rubber tube (CSRT) into three different patterns, its sensitivity was then dramatically increased. Finally, the CSRT was found capable of sensing cardiorespiratory signals, indicating that the sensor would be an important step toward realizing bio-signal sensing for next-generation personalized health care applications.

The fiber-shaped dye sensitized solar cell represents a promising flexible power conversion system for next generation wearable electronics due to its facile preparation, lightweight, and good weavability. However, the use of fiber-shaped dye sensitized solar cells is largely limited by their low power conversion efficiency and flexibility. Herein, a flexible Pt-free fiber-shaped dye sensitized solar cell with a high power conversion efficiency of 10.28% is fabricated, by sequentially growing polyaniline layers and Co0.85Se nanosheets on the surface of carbon fibers as the counter electrodes and TiO2 nanotubes grown on the Ti wire as the photoanode. The polyaniline layer can not only work as the nucleation sites for the following deposition of the Co0.85Se nanosheets but also act as the catalytic sites with large specific surface area to further improve the catalytic activity and reduce the charge transfer resistance, while the Co0.85Se nanosheets can further improve the electrocatalytic activity for the transition of I–/I3–, leading to a remarkably enhanced photovoltaic performance of the cell. This result provides a new design strategy for high-performance flexible fiber-shaped dye sensitized solar cells.

Stretchable organohydrogel fibers are attracting considerable interest for next-generation flexible and wearable soft strain sensors due to their excellent stability in harsh environments. However, due to the uniformly distributed ions and reduced number of carriers in the whole material, the sensitivity of organohydrogel fibers under subzero temperature is not desirable, which significantly hinders their practical application. Herein, a newly competitive proton-trapping strategy was designed to obtain anti-freezing organohydrogel fibers for high-performance wearable strain sensors via a simple freezing–thawing process, in which tetraaniline (TANI), serving as the proton trapper, and representing the shortest repeated structural unit of polyaniline (PANI), was physically crosslinked with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) (PTOH). The as-prepared PTOH fiber exhibited an outstanding sensing performance at −40 °C due to the unevenly distributed ion carriers and the highly breakable proton-migration pathways, with a high gauge factor of 24.6 at a strain of 200–300%. Moreover, the existence of hydrogen bonds between the TANI and PVA chains endowed PTOH with a high tensile strength (1.96 MPa) and toughness (8.0 MJ m−3). Accordingly, strain sensors made from PTOH fibers and knitted textiles could monitor human motions rapidly and sensitively, demonstrating their potential as wearable anti-freezing anisotropic strain sensors.

Hydrogel-based soft materials have great potential in flexible sensors and wearable devices. Herein, a novel covalent double network (C-DN) conductive hydrogel with excellent mechanical properties and great sensing performances was facilely prepared through photopolymerization under green light emitting diode (LED) irradiation. Two types of crosslinking agents were used to optimize the construction of C-DN poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid sodium salt) /polyacrylamide (P(AMPS-Na)/PAM) hydrogels, which were further reinforced by poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). The effect of monomer ratio on the mechanical properties of hydrogels was investigated. Notably, the asymmetric double network from hybrid long/short chain crosslinkers and physical interactions from PEDOT:PSS enabled hydrogels to show satisfactory stretchability of 1228%, high tensile strength of 1.502 MPa, strong toughness of 7.209 MJ m −3 , and good fatigue resistance. Moreover, the synergistic transport of well-dispersed PEDOT:PSS and Na + provided a rich conductive network for hydrogels. The P(AMPS-Na)/PAM/PEDOT:PSS hydrogels exhibited stable and reproducible resistance responses under different strains, showing excellent strain sensitivity (Gauge factor (GF) = 1.30 and 2.72 at 0–50% and 50%-300% strains, respectively). These conductive hydrogels are promising in wearable sensors and human–computer interfaces.

We reported a straightforward and low-cost method to fabricate stretchable biofuel cells by using liquid metal-based metal-polymer conductors. The liquid-metal-based metal-polymer conductors had a conductivity of 2.7 × 105 S/m and a stretchability larger than 200%, giving the biofuel cell good conformability to the skin. The glucose biofuel cells (BFCs) yielded a maximum power density as 14.11 μW/cm2 at 0.31 V with 0.2 mM glucose, while the lactate BFCs reached 31.00 μW/cm2 at 0.51 V with 15 mM lactate. The results of 24 h short circuit current density showed that, with enough biofuel, this patch could be used over the course of an entire day for wearable sensors.

Electronic textiles (e-textiles), known as a newly-developed innovation combining the textile and electronic technologies, are burgeoning as the next-generation of wearable electronics for lots of promising applications. However, a big concern is the durability of the e-textiles during practical using. Here, we describe a facile method to fabricate mechanically and electrically durable e-textiles by chemical deposition of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on widely used cotton fabric. The interface between AgNPs and fabric was tightly strengthened by the bioinspired polydopamine, and a highly waterproof and anticorrosive surface was further obtained by modifying with a fluorine containing agent of 1 H ,1 H ,2 H ,2 H -perfuorodecanethiol (PFDT). In addition to the low sheet resistance of 0.26 ohm/sq and high conductivity of 233.4 S/cm, the e-textiles present outstanding stability to different mechanical deformations including ultrasonication, bending and machine washing. Moreover, thanks to the surface roughness of AgNPs and low surface energy of PFDT, a superhydrophobic surface, with a water contact angle of ca. 152°, was further obtained, endowing the e-textiles excellent anti-corrosion to water, acid/alkaline solution and various liquids (e.g., milk, coffee and tea). Finally, the application of this highly conductive e-textiles in wearable thermal therapy is demonstrated. Together with the facile, all-solution-based, and environmentally friendly fabrication protocol, the e-textiles show great potential of large-scale applications in wearable electronics.

Stretchable ionogels have been intensively investigated for the development of flexible and wearable sensors. Integration of excellent mechanical properties, high conductivity, reliable adhesiveness, remarkable self-healing ability, favorable transparency and biocompatibility is highly desired for ionogel-based flexible sensors but is still challenging. Herein, a high-performance flexible sensor based on a well-designed ionogel with excellent comprehensive properties was facilely fabricated via introducing oppositely charged poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) into a green deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of biocompatible choline chloride and urea. Dynamic physically cross-linked networks were efficiently constructed through noncovalent interactions, including PAA/PEI electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding interactions between PAA/PEI and DES. The as-prepared PAA/PEI/DES ionogels exhibit well-tailored mechanical properties, high conductivity, desirable transparency, strong adhesiveness and highly efficient self-healing ability simultaneously. More importantly, the assembled ionogel-based sensor possesses excellent sensory capabilities towards strain and temperature, including high sensitivity (gauge factor up to 6), wide sensing range (1–600% strain), short response time and outstanding durability. The fractured sensor could be easily healed at 40 °C and their initial sensing performance can be fully restored. This study offers a promising strategy for fabricating biocompatible, flexible and highly sensitive ionogel-based wearable sensors for a full-range of human motion detection.

Laser-direct writing (LDW) and magneto-rheological drawing lithography (MRDL) have been proposed for the fabrication of a flexible microneedle array electrode (MAE) for wearable bio-signal monitoring. Conductive patterns were directly written onto the flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate by LDW. The microneedle array was rapidly drawn and formed from the droplets of curable magnetorheological fluid with the assistance of an external magnetic field by MRDL. A flexible MAE can maintain a stable contact interface with curved human skin due to the flexibility of the PET substrate. Compared with Ag/AgCl electrodes and flexible dry electrodes (FDE), the electrode–skin interface impedance of flexible MAE was the minimum even after a 50-cycle bending test. Flexible MAE can record electromyography (EMG), electroencephalography (EEG) and static electrocardiography (ECG) signals with good fidelity. The main features of the dynamic ECG signal recorded by flexible MAE are the most distinguishable with the least moving artifacts. Flexible MAE is an attractive candidate electrode for wearable bio-signal monitoring.Keywords:laser-direct writing;magneto-rheological drawing lithography;microneedle array;electrode;bio-signal

Thermal comfort is of great significance to maintain people’s healthy state in physics, physiology, and psychology. Personal thermal management (PTM) that passively regulates the immediate environment around the human body has been proposed as a promising strategy to realize on-demand human thermal comfort. In this work, we propose a one-stop solution for the state of the art PTM by combining thermal shielding and thermal energy storage in a Janus-type wearable device, which is named a Janus-type hydroxyapatite-incorporated Kevlar aerogel@Kevlar aerogel supported phase-change material gel (HKA@KPG). The lower HKA with an ultralow thermal conductivity directly attached on the skin can effectively hinder heat transfer from the external environment to human skin. The upper KPG possessing a superior form stability and high energy storage capacity can absorb the heat generated by the human body to regulate the skin temperature. Both the HKA and KPG also demonstrate excellent biocompatibility. Due to its synergistic effect in thermal energy regulation, the Janus HKA@KPG has been applied in wearable PTM in static and dynamic modes to meet the thermal comfort requirements. It is anticipated that the one-stop thermal comfort solution for thermal shielding, thermal energy storage, self-supporting characteristics, wearability, and biosafety offers new possibilities for the next generation of wearable PTMs.
