An experimental and kinetic modeling study including coke formation for catalytic pyrolysis of furfural

Huiyan Zhang,Yun Wang,Shanshan Shao,Rui Xiao

Catalytic conversion of furfural to olefins and aromatics was conducted over ZSM-5 in a fixed-bed reactor. The effects of temperature, weight hourly space velocity and partial pressure on the yield and selectivity of products were investigated and the coked catalysts were characterized. The kinetics of furfural catalytic conversion including catalyst deactivation caused by coke deposition was built. The results showed that the main products of furfural catalytic conversion were aromatics, olefins, furan and coke. High temperature, high partial pressure and low WHSV promoted the formation of olefins and aromatics. The catalytic reaction pathway was speculated to be the decarboxylation of furfural to form furan, with further reactions to form olefins and aromatics. The amount of coke deposited on the catalyst increased with increasing reaction time. The surface area and acidity of catalysts declined as coke formed on the acid sites and blocked the pore channels, which led to the decrease of olefin and aromatic yields. Finally, a kinetic model considering coke deposition had been built based on the above reaction pathway to properly predict the product distribution.

Ring-opening of furfuryl alcohol to pentanediol with extremely high selectivity over Cu/MFI catalysts with balanced Cu0–Cu+ and Brønsted acid sites

Dengfeng Dai,Chao Feng,Minmin Wang,Qingzhou Du,Dandan Liu,Yuan Pan,Yunqi Liu

Biomass-based chemicals as a renewable alternative to petroleum-based chemicals are of great significance. The conversion of biomass-based furfuryl alcohol to pentanediol, including 1,5-pentanediol and 1,2-pentanediol, is explored over a series of bifunctional Cu/MFI catalysts in a continuous-flow reactor. These catalysts are synthesized by supporting copper nanoparticles on MFI zeolites with varying molar ratios of SiO2/Al2O3. Among them, the Z60-10Cu catalyst containing balanced Cu0–Cu+ and Brønsted acid sites exhibits excellent performance, and a high furfuryl alcohol conversion of 99.5% and selectivity of 85.2% for 1,5-pentanediol (69.2%) and 1,2-pentanediol (16.0%) could be achieved (hydrogen pressure: 2.5 MPa) at 160 °C. The experimental results and the results obtained using the DFT technique revealed that the high catalytic activity realized during the processes of ring-opening and hydrogenation could be attributed to the synergistic effect between the Cu species and Brønsted acid sites. The Brønsted acid sites on the Si(OH)Al groups significantly affect the ring-opening process of furfuryl alcohol. The methoxy group on furfuryl alcohol adsorbs on the Cu+ sites, and the hydrogenation saturation of the ring-opening intermediate is realized under the influence of the activated hydrogen units on the Cu0 sites. The results reported herein could help promote the continuous production of high value-added pentanediol from biomass-based raw materials in the presence of non-noble metal catalysts. An economical and feasible path for the transformation of biomass resources into high value-added fine chemicals could also be developed.

Effect of Lewis and Brønsted acidity in Ni/ZSM-5 on catalytic reductive etherification of furfural and alcohols

Mengxue Song,Chonghao Qiu,Pengfei Ma,Jiawei Zhong,Zhuohan Zhang,Weiping Fang,Wenjing Song,Jianqiang Fan,Weikun Lai

Reductive etherification is an attractive and practical strategy to convert bio-platform compounds into valuable chemicals. In directed synthesis of furfuryl ethers, reductive etherification of bioderived furfurals is still challenging due to the complexity of catalytic reaction . Herein, reductive etherification of furfural with alcohol was investigated over Ni/ZSM-5 catalyst, which found that Si/Al ratios in ZSM-5 played an important role on the catalytic performance. For Ni/ZSM-5 with Si/Al ratio of 50, 80.9% yield of furfuryl ether at 90.8% conversion of furfural was achieved under the condition of 2 MPa H 2 and 180 °C for 3 h in isopropanol. The catalyst exhibited superior stability and recyclability during the consecutive cycle run. Catalysts characterization demonstrated that both acidic properties and furfural adsorption were influenced by the Si/Al ratios in Ni/ZSM-5, which correlated to the reaction route and catalytic performance. Lewis acid sites enhanced furfural hydrogenation into furfuryl alcohol, while Brønsted acid sites on ZSM-5 effectively catalyzed sequential etherification of furfuryl alcohol to furfuryl ether. Under optimization conditions, various furfuryl ethers could be obtained with yields above 80% over Ni/ZSM-5 catalyst in different primary alcohols, demonstrating the general versatility of the approach. Our findings offered opportunities to develop an efficient furfuryl ethers synthesis method .

H2SO4 assisted hydrothermal conversion of biomass with solid acid catalysis to produce aviation fuel precursors

Lingjun Zhu,Hao Xu,Xiaoyan Yin,Shurong Wang

With hydrothermal reaction, lignocellulosic biomass can be efficiently converted into furfural (FF) and levulinic acid (LA), both of which are key platform compounds that can be used for the subsequent preparation of aviation fuels. In order to reduce the acid concentration in traditional hydrolysis and provide a reaction system with good catalytic activity, we propose a biomass conversion route as dilute acid hydrolysis coupled with solid acid catalysis. Firstly, at different temperatures, the hemicellulose and cellulose in corn stover were step-hydrolyzed by sulfuric acid solution with a concentration of 0.9 wt. % to produce xylose and glucose, with conversion reaching 100% and 97.3%, respectively. Subsequently, a new resin-derived carbon-based solid acid catalyst was used to catalyze the aforementioned saccharide solutions to obtain FF with yield of 68.7 mol % and LA of 70.3 mol %, respectively. This work provides a promising approach for the efficient production of bio-aviation fuel precursors.

Efficient Synthesis of Furfuryl Alcohol from H2-Hydrogenation/Transfer Hydrogenation of Furfural Using Sulfonate Group Modified Cu Catalyst

Wanbing Gong,Chun Chen,Yong Zhang,Hongjian Zhou,Huimin Wang,Haimin Zhang,Yunxia Zhang,Guozhong Wang,Huijun Zhao

A copper-based catalyst, which was supported by sulfonate group (−SO3H) grafted active carbon (AC), was prepared and activated simultaneously by liquid phase chemical reduction method. The modified copper catalyst, Cu/AC–SO3H, displayed an enhanced catalytic performance for selective hydrogenation of furfural (FAL) to furfuryl alcohol (FOL) in liquid phase, in which almost 100% FOL yield was obtained at 378 K and 0.4 MPa of hydrogen pressure after 120 min reaction. The effect of −SO3H was evaluated and illustrated by the combination of reaction performance and physicochemical characterizations, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) measurements. Through grafting sulfonate group on the support, better dispersion of nanoparticles, higher reduction degree of Cu, and stronger adsorption of FAL can be attained to contribute high hydrogenation performance. In addition, the effects of reaction conditions (such as reaction temperature, H2 pressure, reaction time, solvent, and catalyst to FAL mass ratio) were evaluated intensively. Also, the Cu/AC–SO3H catalyst showed an excellent catalytic performance for transfer hydrogenation of FAL, in which 2-propanol was utilized as the solvent and hydrogen donor concurrently. Cycling test proved the prepared catalyst could be recycled and reused for several times without noticeably reduced catalytic activity of hydrogenation.

Switchable synthesis of furfurylamine and tetrahydrofurfurylamine from furfuryl alcohol over RANEY® nickel

Yingxin Liu,Kuo Zhou,Huimin Shu,Haiyan Liu,Jiongtao Lou,Dechao Guo,Zuojun Wei,Xiaonian Li

RANEY® Ni proved to be an effective heterogeneous catalyst for switchable reductive amination of furfuryl alcohol to tetrahydrofurfurylamine and furfurylamine with NH3 by simply adding or not adding 1.0 MPa H2 into the reaction bulk. After further optimization of the reaction conditions, we finally obtained 94.0% yield of tetrahydrofurfurylamine and 78.8% yield of furfurylamine with high selectivity. By extensively studying the catalytic pathways and mechanism of catalyst deactivation with XRD and XPS characterization, we have confirmed that an excess amount of H2 in the reaction bulk leads to the deep hydrogenation of the furan ring while an insufficient amount of H2 leads to the formation of Ni3N and the deactivation of the catalyst.

Biosynthesis, structure and antioxidant activities of xanthan gum from Xanthomonas campestris with additional furfural

Yan Kang,Panyu Li,Xiaotong Zeng,Xi Chen,Yi Xie,Yu Zeng,Yongkui Zhang,Tonghui Xie

Lignocellulosic-like materials are potentially low-cost fermentation substrates, but their pretreatment brings about by-products. This work investigated the effects of furfural on xanthan gum (XG) production, and product quality was evaluated by structure, viscosity and antioxidant capacities. Xanthomonas campestris maintained steady polysaccharide yield (above 13 g·L –1 ) with enhanced cell growth at low furfural concentrations (below 3.2 g·L –1 ). The products were verified as XG by FT-IR, XRD, NMR and monosaccharide analysis. Moreover, they were found to have reduced acetyl, rising pyruvate and up-to-down glucuronic acid groups as increasing furfural concentration. Furthermore, XG product with 1 g·L –1 furfural addition showed the best hydroxyl scavenging effects, though reducing powers presented no variation. It was demonstrated that furfural, the common hydrolysis by-product, was not necessarily an inhibitor for fermentation, and an appropriate amount of furfural was beneficial to XG production with steady yield and good quality.

The high-entropy oxide-promoted oxidative condensation reaction of biomass-derived furfural with aliphatic alcohol in the presence of O2

Jipeng Wang,Xinli Tong,Chen Guo,Yahui Wei

The high entropy oxides are widely studied as the potential catalytic materials owing to their unique structure and excellent properties. In this work, a new high entropy oxide catalyst MnFeCoNiCuO x was successfully prepared and used for the oxidative condensation reaction of furfural (FUR) and aliphatic alcohol , where the carbon-chain length can be selectively increased under the mild conditions. For the selective oxidative transformation of FUR with n-butanol, a more than 99.0 % conversion of FUR and 91.5 % selectivity of 2-(furanyl-2-methylene) butanal was obtained at 80 ºC for 2 h. In addition, the oxidative condensation of FUR with ethanol, n-propanol, n-pentanol, n-hexanol and n-heptanol was also carried out with the MnFeCoNiCuO x - LiOH as catalyst system in the presence of molecular oxygen , where a moderate to high product yields were acquired. Furthermore, the characterizations of catalyst showed that the existence of abundant oxygen vacancy and high specific area was greatly important to the catalytic reactions .

Resin distribution and mechanical properties of furfurylated Chinese fir wood in relation to furfuryl alcohol concentration

Ye Chen,Zhaohui Chen,Zhuohui Deng,Jie Hu,Wenxuan Liu,Xuelong Liang,Wenting Ren,Xuexia Zhang,Yan Yu,Fei Guo

Furfurylation is a promising wood modification approach, but the reduced wood toughness largely limits its application in structural areas. In this study, the mechanical properties of Chinese fir wood treated with furfuryl alcohol (FA) solutions at varying concentrations (5% to 45%) was investigated, focusing on how the distribution of FA resin across multiple scales influences these properties. The findings highlighted that the mechanical performance of furfurylated wood is strongly dependent on the distribution of FA resin. The inhomogeneous distribution of FA resin in the core and surface layers enhanced the bending strength and stiffness of furfurylated wood. At low FA concentrations (below 25%), FA resin mainly deposited in the wood cell walls, while at higher concentrations, FA resin accumulated in cell lumens with the cell walls nearly saturated, causing a 60% reduction in bending toughness. Remarkably, further resin deposition in cell lumens above 25% FA did not compromise toughness. This reduction in toughness was largely attributed to the FA resin infiltrating the cell walls. For the structural application of furfurylated wood, either restricting resin infiltration into the cell walls or modifying FA resin to mitigate brittleness are proposed, thus achieving an optimal balance between dimensional stability and toughness.

Highly efficient hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol over Cu–Al2O3–ZnO catalyst

Junqi Zhang,Yongwang Li,Zhiwei Zhang,Zheng Wang,Jiaxing Zhang,Shuai Liu,Yang Qin,Bingxin Zhu,Tongxue Zhang,Hongyu Wang,Fumin Wang,Xubin Zhang

The development of simple, efficient and economical catalysts for the hydrogenation of biomass to produce high value-added chemicals is of great significance in solving the energy crisis. In this work, a series of non-precious metal catalysts (Cu–Al2O3–ZnO) with different defect sites were prepared by etching Devarda's alloy. Under optimized mild reaction conditions, the furfural conversion and furfuryl alcohol selectivity are both greater than 99.0%, and the catalyst has good reusability. Characterisation and experiments were used to investigate the activate species for hydrogenation reaction. It can be proved that the low-valent Cu species in the Cu–Al2O3–ZnO catalysts play an important role as adsorption and dissociation sites for H2. Different etching degrees and sample reduction temperatures of the alloy can be used to adjust the content of acidic sites such as Al2O3 and CuO, which have appropriate adsorption properties for furfural. ZnO promotes the dispersion of the Cu species and enhances the accessibility of the active sites. The etching method achieves the interaction between species to further enhance the stability and activity of the catalyst. The catalytic performance of the catalyst is very competitive and this study provides a new method for the efficient hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol.

Efficient conversion of fructose to 5-[(formyloxy)methyl]furfural by reactive extraction and in-situ esterification

Xiong Caixia,Sun Yong,Du Juan,Chen Wei,Si Zhihao,Gao He,Tang Xing,Zeng Xianhai

5-[(Formyloxy)methyl]furfural (FMF), an analogue of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) is becoming more attractive due to its superior stability and hydrophobicity, which make it easier to refineand store. In the present study, FMF was produced from fructose by one-pot approach in pure formic acid media or by a two-step approach via HMF in choline chloride (ChCl)/fructose deep eutectic solvents (DES) system. A favorable FMF yield of 63.22% was reached by two-step approach. In addition, the effects of reaction parameters, such as temperature and acidity, on preparation of FMF from fructose were systematically investigated. The dehydration of fructose into HMF was confirmed as the rate-controlling step in the consecutive reaction. Ultimately, the separation and purification procedures of FMF were put forward. The FMF with a purity of 98.8% was obtained finally. Meanwhile, the FMF purified by saturated sodium bicarbonate solution showed an excelled storage stability.

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation of biomass-derived furfural to furfuryl alcohol over in-situ prepared nano Cu-Pd/C catalyst using formic acid as hydrogen source

Juan Du,Jiaren Zhang,Yong Sun,Wenlong Jia,Zhihao Si,He Gao,Xing Tang,Xianhai Zeng,Tingzhou Lei,Shijie Liu,Lu Lin

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of bio-derived furfural (FF) to furfuryl alcohol (FFA) was performed using the physically mixed CuO-Pd/C as catalyst and formic acid (FA) as hydrogen donor. The evolution investigation of Cu showed the precursor CuO firstly dissolved into Cu 2+ by FA and then formed coordination polymer-copper(II), which uniformly dispersed in reaction solution of 1, 4-dioxane. Subsequently the Cu 2+ was in-situ reduced and Cu-Pd alloys formed simultaneously. The in-situ prepared nano Cu-Pd/C catalyst exhibited the best performance with a complete FF conversion and FFA selectivity of 98.1%. Reaction conditions test suggested that the FFA selectivity was greatly dependent on the Cu content. The underlying mechanism revealed that the Pd in Cu-Pd alloys mainly promoted the FF conversion by enhancing hydrogen adsorption, while the nano Cu for increasing FFA selectivity; the Cu-Pd alloys functioned in synergistic way. Leaching and recycling tests demonstrated an excellent stability of the Cu-Pd/C catalyst.
