Purpose This study aims to evaluate the effects of chitosan and D-fructose 1,6-bisphosphate (F16BP) trisodium salt on the acidity of selected Ultisols (Ultisol-QY1, Ultisol-QY2, Ultisol-LX, and Ultisol-YT) and their resistance to soil acidification. Materials and methods The effect of adsorbed chitosan and F16BP on soil acidity was evaluated by interacting different concentrations of the organic substrates with 4.0 g soil under different agitation times (2 to 264 h, 200 rpm, 25 °C). Also, the soils were amended with the organic substrate and incubated for 14 days to determine their effects on soil physicochemical properties. Afterwards, the soil solid phases from the adsorption studies and incubated soil were acidified with different concentrations of nitric acid to simulate soil acidification and activate soil aluminum (Al). Results and discussion The adsorption interactions of chitosan and F16BP with Ultisols demonstrated different potentials in their ability to displace mineral-bound hydroxyl groups and ameliorate soil acidity. The R-PO 4 3− group of F16BP was more effective in displacing the hydroxyl groups through a ligand exchange mechanism and thus showed greater ameliorating effect on soil acidity than chitosan. Compared to lime and F16BP, chitosan-treated soils exhibited the least decrease in pH during soil acidification due to the significant improvement in soil pH buffering capacity (pHBC). Specifically, when amended with chitosan, the pHBC of Ultisol-QY1, Ultisol-QY2, Ultisol-LX, and Ultisol-YT was increased by 262.2%, 88.9%, 337.7%, and 320.6% as opposed to 22.1%, 18.4%, 27.4%, and 83.0% for these Ultisols by F16BP, respectively. Thus, F16BP is a better material to improve soil pH, while chitosan is a better option to improve soil pHBC, inhibit soil acidification, and retard the activation of phytotoxic Al 3+ . By the nature of their functional groups, we deduced that F16BP ameliorated soil acidity by displacing the hydroxyl groups on soils due to adsorption of R-PO 4 3− group through ligand exchange mechanism, while chitosan directly improved pHBC by providing abundant R-NH 2 groups to accommodate excess exogenous H + . Conclusions Chitosan is a promising soil amendment material for use in the management of acidic soils due to its high N content and potential to inhibit soil acidification. Given the readily available raw materials and ease of producing chitosan, long-term incubation studies should be carried out to assess the effect of chitosan on soil pH variations, carbon, and N mineralization.

This research evaluated the effects of alkyl polyglucoside (APG), an environment-friendly surfactant, on the removal of anthracene (ANT), phenanthrene (PHE), and pyrene (PYR) from the soil cultivated with Scirpus triqueter , an aquatic native pioneer plant in the Yangtze estuarine wetland, China. Soils spiked with about 200 mg kg −1 of ANT, PHE, and PYR were individually irrigated with 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 100, and 150 mg L −1 of APG. Plant biomass yields, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) removal rates, soil microbial, and soil enzyme activities were quantified after 90 days’ cultivation of Scirpus triqueter . Experiments demonstrated that APG has an ability to facilitate PAHs degradation at appropriate concentrations. The highest removal rate of the PAHs was observed in 40 mg L −1 APG treatment, and the removal rates increased 23, 54, and 52 %, respectively, compared to the non-amended control pots. However, the PAHs removal rate decreased to a certain extent when high concentrations of APG were added. The effect on PAHs removal in the soil could be explained by the changed levels of plant biomass, soil microbial populations, and soil enzymatic activity affected by the APG. The results suggested that the use of Scirpus triqueter combined with APG was an effective means for the phytoremediation of the PAH-contaminated soil. At the same time, APG’s optimal concentration should be determined before the application in the PAH-contaminated wetlands.

Thermally-enhanced soil vapor extraction (T-SVE) combined with sand mixing is an alternative technology for remediating low-permeable soil polluted by organic contaminants. In this study, a T-SVE apparatus with a large heating cylinder was constructed for exploring removal mechanisms of typical petroleum hydrocarbons of n -C 11 and C 13−16 alkanes, and dynamics of heat propagation within soils during T-SVE operation was simulated by CMG-STARS software. After 6 days of T-SVE, most of the soil concentration-gradient curves of n -alkanes almost coincided with their isothermal contours, suggesting the crucial role of heat conductivity on T-SVE remediation efficiency. The instantaneous concentration of n -alkanes in extracted gas showed great fluctuations, and higher than 90% of spiked n -alkanes was removed from soils. n -alkanes were more easily eliminated from soil with lower organic matter due to the less retention ratio despite the trivial impact of organic matter on heat transfer. By contrast, the higher soil moisture adopted in the study retarded heat transfer in the initial 2 days due to thermal consumption induced by water evaporation. During the last 4 days, however, the average temperature of more humid soil was obviously elevated, especially in the zones receiving less energy input. It was attributed to the fact that soil temperature was mainly determined by heat conduction, and soil pores still occupied by water were more beneficial for heat conduction, leading to the promoted evaporation of n -alkane and therefore eventual remediation efficiency. Suitable original soil moisture is important for T-SVE remediating low-permeable soil combined with sand mixing.

Introduction: Applying biochar (BC) to reduce toxic substance accumulation in soil, either through direct adsorption or modulation of the microbial community, has received considerable attention. However, a knowledge gap exists regarding how BC regulates microbial community structure and functions to mitigate toxic substance accumulation. Methods: We previously identified p-coumaric acid (p-CA) as a representative autotoxin in tobacco rhizosphere soil. On this basis, this study simulated a soil environment with p-CA accumulation to investigate the impacts of BC on p-CA, soil physicochemical properties, and microbial community structure and function. Results: The results showed that p-CA could be directly adsorbed onto BC, which followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.996). A pot experiment revealed that BC significantly reduced soil p-CA, altered soil microbial composition, and enhanced bacterial community diversity. A weighted correlation network analysis showed a close association between taxon 1 in the microbial network and p-CA, suggesting a pivotal role for this taxon in reducing p-CA, with Devosia and Nocardioides identified as potential key contributors to this process. The prediction of possible keystone taxa functions showed that BC increased the relative abundances of aromatic compound degraders. Mantel tests indicated that soil organic matter exerted the greatest influence on keystone taxa functions and hub genera.Discussion: These findings suggest that BC may either directly chemisorb p-CA or indirectly facilitate p-CA degradation by regulating the functioning of keystone taxa. The results of this study provide a novel perspective for further investigation of the mechanisms through which BC reduces the accumulation of toxic substances in soil.

Soil flushing and adsorption-based soil remediation are promising options for removing heavy metals in agricultural soil. However, they encounter limitations in low removal efficiency, secondary pollution potential, or the need for a purification/recovery process. Optimizing flushing solutions or the functional properties of adsorbents could fundamentally eliminate the drawbacks of these methods. Yet, their practical application remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a new combined remediation strategy of multiple-pulse water soil flushing (MF) with novel aminated cellulose nanofibers (A-NFCs)/AEM/AM@MIL-100(Fe) nanocomposite hydrogel adsorbent (ANCMH) was adopted to remove Cr(VI) from agricultural soil. The characteristic analyses approved Cr(VI) adsorption-coupled reduction/swelling-based mechanisms on ANCMH with the maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of 338.24 mg g −1 at pH 6.8 governed by pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models. Instead of conventional MF application using environmentally problematic extractant fluids, a 5-day soil column simulation trial of MF coupled with ANCMH adsorbent layers (MF@ANCMH) was applied in medium-to-highly Cr(VI)-contaminated soil followed by easy ANCMHs separation, preventing secondary pollution. Innovatively, the water flushing-stop flux events favorably decreased the pH of neutral soil by 0.83 folds and allowed Cr(VI) release from the soil matrix to be adsorbed by ANCMHs, achieving a high Cr(VI) removal efficiency of 98.9 %. Compared to the soil treated with ANCMH individually and soil flushed with water or Na 2 EDTA, the MF@ANCMH-treated soil reached the corresponding regulation of permissible levels for Cr(VI) residential scenarios in agricultural soil of 5.6 ppm with 3-cycles of ANCMH reuse. The residual Cr in MF@ANCMH-remediated soil displayed minimal bioavailability at root-zoon soil of ≤4.2 ppm and a 97.66 % reduction in its exchangeable-carbonate fraction compared to untreated soil, corresponding to a risk assessment code score below 1 %. Also, the application of MF@ANCMH resulted in Cr bioaccumulation below 0.1 ppm in cultivated wheat plants, prevented the physiological phytotoxicity symptoms, and elevated their antioxidant enzyme activity, photosynthesis, growth, and yielding indicators compared to that grown in untreated soil. Furthermore, it improved soil organic matter, microbial community, diversity, and microecological functions. This study provides a promising alternative remediation strategy for neutral soil that can maintain soil/crop quality and soil health with high chemical/environmental stability of pollutants after remediation, demonstrating its sustainability and feasibility in agricultural soil.

Soil washing is employed to prevent the issue of Cr re-oxidation following the remediation of Cr-contaminated soil by transferring contaminants from the soil to the wash solution through the dissolving action. Nevertheless, rapidly screening effective washing agents remains challenging. This study conducted batch experiments to gather dataset on key factors (soil properties, Cr sequential extraction and type of washing agent) and Cr content after washing with 250 experimental data points. We developed 12 machine learning models, among which the light gradient boosting machine model excelled in predicting Cr content after washing, determining soil suitability for washing. Furthermore, the adaptive boosting and random forest models preferably predicted Cr content after various washing agents treatments, facilitating optimal detergent identification. Based on the feature analysis, soil pH, exchangeable potassium , reactive iron oxides , and Cr sequential extraction can account for most of the differences in washing treatment. To further validate our model, we used an additional 60 experimental data points, including soil properties with pH values beyond the range of the initial 250 data points. The R 2 value of the predicted fit to the actual results was 0.801. This study provides the feasibility of improving the efficiency of technical remediation of Cr-contaminated soils.

Herbicide acetochlor (ACT) is widely used in agricultural production, but it remains unclear whether microplastics (MPs) from agricultural films exacerbate its harmful effects on soil health. Here, a microcosm cultivation experiment was conducted to investigate the impacts of PE (Polyethylene)-MPs and PBAT (polybutylene adipate terephthalate)-MPs with ACT (MPs/ACT) on soil health. Results showed that MPs/ACT treatment caused soil acidification, depletion of organic carbon and ammonium, altered enzyme activities, and influenced greenhouse gas emissions compared to ACT alone. MPs/ACT co-exposure also restructured microbial communities, reducing alpha diversity, increasing co-occurrence network complexity, enriching putative contaminant degraders, and enhancing the relative abundance of key nitrogen-cycling genes, enzymes, and carbon-cycling genes. Notably, PBAT/ACT stimulated nitrification-denitrification processes more than PE/ACT, indicating polymer-specific effects on soil nutrient cycling. Overall, MPs/ACT decreased soil health by 8.89 % - 14.63 %, greater than 8.39 % caused by ACT alone. These results demonstrate that MPs exacerbate the toxic effects of ACT on soil health. Mitigation strategies, such as reducing MP inputs, optimizing herbicide use, and incorporating biochar or microbial amendments, may help to restore soil health and maintain ecosystem stability. This study provides critical insights into the compounded impacts of MPs and herbicides on soil ecosystems.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution in soil poses a grave threat to human health. Combining various approaches to reduce Cd accumulation in crops is an active area of research to remediate farmlands with medium-high levels of Cd contamination. The Mercapto-functionalized palygorskite (PGS-SH) and zinc (Zn) application alone or in combination were investigated to explore the reduction of Cd uptake by B. chinensis L and transformation of Cd in soil. The sole application of Zn or PGS-SH increased the biomass of B. chinensis L. and decreased the concentration of Cd in plants, but more improvements were observed from the combined application of Zn and PGS-SH. Low concentration of exogenous Zn (50 mg·kg -1 ) significantly increased the soil respiration rate (SRR) and the soil dehydrogenase activity (sDHA), while promoted B. chinensis L. growth while inhibiting Cd uptake. However, excessive exogenous Zn (≥ 200 mg·kg -1 ) significantly inhibited B. chinensis L. growth and soil microbial activity. The combined application of PGS-SH and Zn had the highest sDHA (145.59%) and lowest transport factor (TF) (27.59%) compared with the CK. The combination of PGS-SH and Zn fertilizer is a safe and effective means to reduce the accumulation of Cd in plants and restore microbial activity.

An in-depth understanding of the sorption behaviors of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in soil is essential to assess their environmental risks accurately. Due to chemical industry production and waste treatment, co-contamination soil of heavy metals (HMs)-PFASs has become a public concern worldwide. This study investigated soil sorption behaviors of PFASs including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), and perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS). A multiple linear regression (MLR) model was developed to predict the sorption of PFOS in soil. Validation results demonstrated that this model could effectively predict the distribution coefficients ( K d ) of PFOS based on soil organic carbon (OC), silt, clay, and free Fe/Al-oxide contents, exhibiting a strong predictive ability ( r 2 = 0.942, p < 0.001). In six soils, HMs (Cd 2+ and As 5+ ) influence three anionic PFASs sorption primarily by altering the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions between soil components and PFASs. The K d values of PFOS tend to rise with increasing Cd 2+ concentration but decline with increasing As 5+ concentration. In contrast, HMs have a relatively minor influence on the sorption of PFOA and PFHxS. Moreover, a nonlinear model was constructed for the first time to quantify the impact of HMs on PFASs sorption. The model achieves exceptional prediction accuracy when applied to both experimental data from this study and literature data. A comprehensive understanding of PFASs sorption behavior in soil under conditions of coexisting HMs is of great significance for formulating targeted degradation and mitigation strategies for co-contaminated sites.

Soil aggregation plays an important role in agricultural production activities. However, the structure of soil aggregation is destroyed by the natural environment and unreasonable farming management, resulting in the loss of water, fertilizers and pesticides in soil. At present, hydrogels have been widely reported to promote the formation of soil aggregation. In this paper, amphiphilic calcium alginate (ASA/Ca 2+ ) was applied to promote the formation of soil aggregation and enhance pesticide retention. Initially, an ASA was obtained through the one-pot Ugi condensation (a four-component green chemical reaction). Then, ASA/Ca 2+ hydrogel is prepared by Ca 2+ cross-linking. The formation of soil aggregation was determined through the Turbiscan Lab Expert stability analyzer, Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope (CLSM), and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). And the effect of soil aggregation on acetamiprid environmental behavior was investigated by adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms, and leaching. The results shown that the three-dimensional network structure of ASA/Ca 2+ hydrogel can promote the formation of soil aggregation. Aggregate durability index (ADI) was 0.55 in the presence of ASA/Ca 2+ hydrogel, indicating that amphiphilic hydrogel can enhance the stability of soil aggregation. The adsorbing capacity of acetamiprid was 1.58 times higher than pure soil, and the release of acetamiprid only about 20% in the presence of ASA/Ca 2+ hydrogel. These results would be helpful for the formation of soil aggregation and pesticides adsorption on soil aggregation. Thus, ASA/Ca 2+ hydrogel is likely to improve soil quality, simultaneously it can minimize the mobility of pesticides in the agricultural system.

Soil nutrient testing is an effective way to uncover soil nutrient status. However, the conventional testing method (CT method) and Mehlich 3 method (M3 method) demand long-time consumption, tedious testing steps, high testing cost, dangerous chemicals contained in extractant, etc. Therefore, it is important to develop a new rapid test method or improve the existing rapid test method of soil available nutrients. In this study, an improved Mehlich3 method (IM3 method) with the new combined extractant were developed and evaluated on the testing feasibility, precision, efficiency, and cost. The results showed that: (1) IM3 method avoided the usage of two hazardous chemicals, i.e., ammonium nitrate and nitric acid, which were difficult in purchase and storage but contained in the combined extractant of M3 method. (2) The correlation coefficients of available P, K, Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn in calcareous soil between M3 and CT, and between IM3 and CT methods all reached highly significant level. The correlation coefficient of available Zn between IM3 and CT method was significantly higher than that between M3 and CT method, and those of the other elements had not obviously changed. (3) The variation coefficients of available P, K, Fe and Cu determined by M3 and IM3 methods were all lower than those determined by CT method. The variation coefficients of available Mn and Zn determined by IM3 were 3.67% and 6.43%, which were slightly higher than those determined by CT method with 2.72% and 5.29%, but were lower than those determined by M3 method. (4) Under the premise of ensuring testing precision, IM3 method took only 6.3 min/piece for determining six elements, reducing testing time by 70.7% and 3.08% compared with CT (21.5 min/piece) and M3 (6.5 min/piece) methods, respectively. The testing cost of IM3 method was reduced by 26% and 61.2% compared with M3 and CT methods, respectively. In conclusion, IM3 method is an ideal rapid measurement method for the simultaneous determination of available soil nutrients in calcareous soil. Keywords:improved testing method for soil nutrients;extractant;testing precision;testing time;testing cost;calcareous soil

Microplastics are an emerging threat to soils, but little is known about their effects on soil nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycling. In this study, a three-month soil incubation experiment has been conducted to analyze the effects of polyethene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) microplastics in sizes of 0–1 mm and 1–5 mm on soil available phosphate, nitrate, and ammonium contents under different fertilization regimes. Soil phosphorus and nitrogen availability were continuously determined in-situ by ion-exchange membrane method during the incubation. Microplastic surface chemical composition and the specific surface area were analyzed by FTIR and BET, respectively. The 16s rRNA sequencing of soil bacterial communities as well as soil pH have been determined after the incubation. The results showed that the presence of microplastics could significantly (P < 0.05) decrease soil available phosphate content from 122.61 mg P L −1 to 63.43 mg P L −1 . The addition of PP microplastics could significantly increase soil available ammonium content from 0.94 mg N L −1 to 1.53 mg N L −1 . Since microplastics had undetectable specific surface area and limited effects on soil microorganisms, adsorption and microorganism alteration functions might not be the main drivers of microplastic effects on soil phosphorus and nitrogen.
