Tetracycline is one of the most commonly used antibiotics in the world. Eventually, large amounts of this contaminant will enter into the subsurface environment, where a variety of ions exist. In this study, the effects of divalent metal cations (Mg2+, Ca2+, Pb2+ and Cu2+) and inorganic anions (Cl−, NO3−, SO42− and H2PO4−) on the transport of tetracycline in saturated porous media were investigated. Both batch and column experiments were conducted to determine the interactions between tetracycline and sand. Batch sorption experimental results showed that the presence of divalent metal cations could increase the sorption of tetracycline onto sand due to the cation-bridging mechanism. When Na+ was the counterion in the background solution, anions caused a significant decrease in tetracycline sorption owing to the occupation of some adsorption sites by anions and the decrease of electrostatic attraction. Column experiments indicated that the inhibition effects of divalent cations followed the order of Cu2+ > Pb2+ > Ca2+ ≈ Mg2+; the regular pattern might be related to their different complexing strengths. The presence of inorganic anions enhanced the mobility of tetracycline following the order of H2PO4− > SO42− > NO3− > Cl−. Transport-enhancement effects of anions were ascribed to competition between inorganic anions and tetracycline for deposition sites on sand surfaces. However, when Ca2+ was the counterion, the differences in the breakthrough curve of tetracycline among three inorganic anions (i.e., SO42−, NO3− and Cl−) were very small. In this case, the transport-inhibiting effects of anions could be counterbalanced by the transport-enhancement effects of the cation-bridging effect. Also, the two-site nonequilibrium transport model was applied to analyze the transport data. Findings from this study improve our understanding of the transport of tetracycline in saturated aquifer materials.

Considering that the ubiquitous organic/inorganic ligands and iron oxide minerals play significant roles in antibiotic fate in the aquifers. In this study, the influences of two ligands (i.e., citric acid and phosphate) on the transport of tetracycline (TC, a broad-spectrum antibiotic) with or without ferrihydrite colloids in quartz sand were explored. In the absence of ferrihydrite colloids, column studies indicated that the two ligands promoted TC transport and citric acid exhibited a greater transport-enhancement effect than phosphate. The observation was mainly ascribed to a stronger competition effect, steric hindrance, and electrostatic repulsion in the addition of citric acid compared to phosphate. Moreover, ferrihydrite colloids inhibited TC transport, which was mainly caused by contaminant retention associated with colloid deposition and the additional active sites for TC provided by the deposited iron oxide colloids with positive charges. Another interesting finding was that both ligands weakened the inhibitory influences of ferrihydrite colloids on the mobility of TC. This observation stemmed from the enhanced transport of free TC molecules (i.e., TC unassociated with colloids), colloids acting as carriers of TC, as well as the competitive deposition of TC − species and ferrihydrite colloids. Meanwhile, the extent of ferrihydrite colloid-mediated mobility of TC affected by citric acid was much greater than phosphate. Because citric acid exhibited a much greater influence on the interaction of colloids, TC molecules, and sand grains during the transport process. These results reveal the importance of accounting for the impacts of natural ligands on colloid-mediated transport of antibiotics in the subsurface systems.

Transport of Cr(VI) at the presence of bentonite colloid was carried out in saturated porous media of 16–18 mesh and 40–60 mesh sand columns. Effects of flow rate, pH, ion strength, humic acid and bentonite concentrations on Cr(VI) migration were investigated. The results show that the increase of flow rate accelerated the breakthrough of Cr(VI) and BP, but the transport mass of dissolved Cr(VI) decreased by ~ 15.0% when flow rate increased to 2.5 ml min −1 . Increasing IS to 10mM resulted in decrease of Cr(VI) transport mass by 6.86%–21.4%. Increase of pH and decrease of bentonite concentration favored the transport of dissolved Cr(VI). Humic acid had little effect on transport amount of Cr at pH7. Cr(VI) transport was dominated by the dissolved Cr(VI). The transport data of dissolved Cr(VI) were well described by the two-site model. The presence of BP reduced total Cr(VI) transport mass in co-transport.

In recent years, energy consumption has become an essential aspect in the manufacturing industry, and low heat transfer is one of the obstacles that affect the quality of the final product. This situation can be managed by suspending nanoparticles into ordinary heat transferring fluid (the base fluid). This newly prepared colloidal suspension has better heat transport capabilities. Keeping such usage of nanofluids in mind, this research was performed to better understand the heat transport characteristics during flow analysis saturated in porous media subject to Al2O3-SiO2/water hybrid nanofluids. This flow problem was generated by a stretching/shrinking surface. The surface of the sheet was under the influence of mass suction and second-order partial slip. The boundary layer flow was formulated in a system of partial differential equations by utilizing basic conservation laws in conjunction with the Tiwari and Das nanofluid model. Then, the appropriate form of the similarity transformation was adapted to transform the model into a system of ordinary differential equations. The built-in function, i.e., the bvp4c function in the MATLAB software, solved the reduced form of the boundary layer model. The novelty of this study lay in the predicting of two different exact and numerical solutions for both the flow and temperature fields. The computed results showed that the medium porosity as well as the nanoparticle volume fraction widened the existence range of the dual solutions. In addition, the investigational output exposed the fact that the temperature fields were significantly enhanced by the higher nanoparticle volume fraction. Moreover, the outcomes of this study showed a superb correlation with existing works. The present results can be utilized in various branches of science and engineering such as the polymer industry and in the treatment of different diseases. Keywords:hybrid nanofluid;stretching/shrinking sheet;dual solutions;semi-analytical solution;porous medium

This study investigated the decomposition of n-hexane in 15% O 2 (N 2 balance) in dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactors filled with three different kinds of dielectric balls, viz. quartz, less porous, and porous alumina balls. Products of n-hexane decomposition were analyzed by using a gas chromatograph (GC), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS). The main products of n-hexane decomposition are CO, CO 2 , and liquid particles. The DBD reactor filled with porous alumina balls can completely adsorb the liquid particles and reduce particle emission. GC–MS and FTIR analysis results show that the liquid particles mainly compose 3-hexanone and 2-hexanone.

The performance of discharge plasma in treating organic pollutants and micro-organisms in water is impressive. When discharge plasma is used to treat polluted water containing organic pollutants and microorganisms, the presence of a certain amount of microplastics (MPs) in the water is unavoidable due to the complexity of the components contained in the water and the prevalence of MPs. MPs, as one of the pollutants that are difficult to be degraded by discharge plasma, undergo physical and chemical changes that increase their risk in the environment after treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the fate of MPs after being treated with discharge plasma. In this study, the surface morphology of plastics before and after discharge plasma treatment was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The plastics after discharge plasma treatment were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to determine the changes in oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface. The recovery of microplastics (MPs) in saturated porous media under different physicochemical and plasma oxidation conditions was investigated by column experiments. It has been shown that MPs exhibit increased recovery under conditions of increased flow rate and pH. A decrease in recovery was observed at elevated ionic strength and co-existing cation valence. High voltages and low air flow rates increase the oxidation of MPs by increasing the thermal effects of the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma system, the amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the intensity of ultraviolet ray (UV) irradiation. The mobility of MPs is enhanced by a combination of these factors. The advection–dispersion equation (ADE) fits the transport data of MPs well. The interaction energy between quartz sand and MPs was calculated using the Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) theory. This study provides a new perspective on the potential risks of discharge plasma in water treatment.

This dataset is related to the research article in Chemosphere, entitled ‘The limited facilitating effect of dissolved organic matter extracted from organic wastes on the transport of titanium dioxide nanoparticles in acidic saturated porous media’ [1]. The data summarised the characterization of dissolved organic matter (DOM) extracted from organic wastes and their effects on the transport of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 NPs) in acidic saturated porous media in the presence of monovalent electrolyte. Three types of dissolved organic matter were extracted from organic materials, including swine manure, sludge, and sediment, using deionized water, and were characterized with UV–Vis, FTIR and elementary analysis. The adsorption of DOM onto TiO 2 NPs was evaluated in the presence of NaCl, and zeta potentials of TiO 2 NPs were also determined. Breakthrough column experiments were conducted to quantify the effects of the extracted DOM on the transport behaviours of TiO 2 NPs in acidic porous media compared with humic acid. Moreover, the interaction energy between nanoparticles and between nanoparticles and quartz media was calculated according to the classical DLVO theory. The dataset could be used as a reference for the evaluation and prediction of the environmental fate and subsequent risk of engineered nanomaterials.

Per– and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination is ubiquitous and likely co–exist with hydrocarbon surfactants in the subsurface environment. The transport of PFAS in unsaturated porous media (quartz sand–packed columns) with an anionic hydrocarbon surfactant was investigated using perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) as representative PFAS and hydrocarbon surfactant at 1.5 and 30 mM NaCl, respectively. Our results show that SDBS inhibited the retardation of PFOA during transport. The degree of the inhibited retardation was more significant at higher concentration of SDBS ( C SDBS ) for a given concentration of PFOA ( C PFOA ) and higher ionic strength. In contrast, PFOA only marginally affected the transport of SDBS under all tested conditions. This is mainly due to the greater surface activity of SDBS with respect to PFOA, favoring the competitive preferential adsorption of SDBS at the air–water interface and then the transport of PFOA in the unsaturated sand. This assumption is further supported by the greater air–water adsorption coefficient ( K ai ) and surface excess ( Γ ) for SDBS than those for PFOA, as well as the surface tension isotherms that fairly weighted toward to SDBS in the binary PFOA–SDBS system. Our findings indicate the critical role of anionic hydrocarbon surfactant in retarding PFOA transport in unsaturated zone. This should be considered when assessing the transport potential and environmental risk, and developing remedial strategies of PFAS in the subsurface environment.

Field application of manure compost introduces a large quantity of dissolved organic matter (DOM), which can affect the migration of DOM-associated contaminants. In this study, the transport of humic acid (HA) and compost-derived dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in two porous media under various conditions, including ionic types, ionic strength, and influent concentrations, were investigated by column experiments and modeling analysis. Increasing Na + concentration did not affect the transport of CDOM and HA in quartz sands, but inhibited CDOM transport in ferrihydrite (Fh)-coated sands. The retention recoveries of CDOM in Fh-coated sands were not changed with increasing NaCl concentration, suggesting that the adsorption of CDOM on Fh-coated sands caused by increasing NaCl concentration was a reversible process. Ca 2+ could reduce the mobility of CDOM and HA through bridge bonding and electrostatic interaction. CDOM had a higher mobility than HA in quartz sands under CaCl 2 conditions because the aggregation stability of CDOM was stronger than that of HA. The ferrihydrite coating increased the roughness of sand surface, resulting in lower mobility of CDOM in the Fh-coated sands than in quartz sands. A part of CDOM adsorbed onto Fh-coated sand was strongly bound through ligand exchange-surface complexation. The pore volume of CDOM required to saturate adsorption sites onto the Fh-coated sand depends on the influent CDOM concentration. The influent CDOM with higher concentration required less pore volume to achieve adsorption equilibrium. Modeling analysis suggested that the types of deposition sites provided by Fh-coated sand are mainly irreversible sites. Our findings demonstrated that CDOM transport in the sand columns may change the porous medium's physicochemical properties and alter the hydrochemistry conditions. Therefore, these factors mentioned above should not be ignored when evaluating the environmental risks of CDOM.

There is currently a lack of scientific understanding regarding how bio-surfactants influence the mobility of graphene oxide (GO) through saturated porous media. In this study, the transport characteristics of GO through porous media with different heterogeneities (i.e., quartz sand and goethite-coated sand) after the addition of saponin (a representative bio-surfactant) were investigated. The results demonstrated that saponin (3–10 mg L−1) promoted GO mobility in both types of porous media at pH 7.0. This trend was attributed to the competitive deposition between nanoparticles and bio-surfactant molecules for attachment sites, the enhanced electrostatic repulsion, the decreased strain, the presence of steric effects induced by the adsorbed saponin, and the increase in the hydrophilicity of nanoparticles. Intriguingly, saponin promoted GO mobility in goethite-coated sand (i.e., chemically heterogeneous porous media) to a greater extent than that in sand (i.e., relatively homogeneous porous media) when saponin concentrations increased, which stemmed from the differences in the extent of the deposition site competition for saponin on the two porous media and the electrostatic repulsion between GO and the porous media. Furthermore, a cation-bridging mechanism was also involved in the ability of saponin to increase GO mobility when the electrolyte solution was 0.1 mM Cu2+. Moreover, the extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (XDLVO) theory and the colloid transport model were applicable to elucidate the mobility properties of GO with or without saponin in porous media. The findings from this work highlight the important status of bio-surfactants in the fate of colloidal carbon-based nanomaterials in subsurface systems.

The current state of knowledge on the transport behaviors of oxytetracycline (OTC, a typical tetracycline antibiotic) in porous media with heterogeneous chemical surfaces is inadequate. In this work, the mobility properties of OTC through saturated porous media with different chemical heterogeneities (i.e., quartz sand, montmorillonite (MMT)-, humic acid (HA)-, and goethite (Goe)-coated sands) were investigated. In comparison with the mobility of OTC in the quartz sand, HA and goethite coatings inhibited the mobility of OTC, whereas montmorillonite coating enhanced OTC mobility. HA coating inhibited the transport of OTC that stemmed from the strong interactions between HA and OTC via complexation, π–π stacking, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interaction. The positively charged iron oxide coating on Goe-coated sand provided favorable sites for OTC deposition through complexation and electrostatic attraction. The enhanced transport of OTC through MMT-coated sand was mainly due to the strong electrostatic repulsion between the anionic OTC species (i.e., OTC−) and negatively charged porous media. Solution pH (5.0–9.0) posed a negligible effect on the trend of OTC mobility in different porous media. Furthermore, Ca2+ inhibited the transport of OTC mobility through various porous media via cation-bridging. The findings of this work contribute significantly to our understanding of the influence of aquifer surface chemical heterogeneities on OTC mobility behaviors in the subsurface environment.

Herein, the influences of rhamnolipid (a typical biosurfactant) on oxytetracycline (OTC) transport in the porous media and their variations with the surface heterogeneities of the media (uncoated sand, goethite (Goe)-, and humic acid (HA)-coated sands) were explored. Compared to uncoated sand, goethite and HA coatings suppressed OTC mobility by increasing deposition sites. Interestingly, rhamnolipid-affected OTC transport strongly depended on the chemical heterogeneities of aquifers and biosurfactant concentrations. Concretely, adding rhamnolipid (1–3 mg/L) inhibited OTC mobility through sand columns because of the bridging effect of biosurfactant between sand and OTC. Unexpectedly, rhamnolipid of 10 mg/L did not further improve the inhibition of OTC transport owing to the fact that the deposition capacity of rhamnolipid reached its maximum. OTC mobility in Goe-coated sand columns was inhibited by 1 mg/L rhamnolipid. However, the inhibitory effect decreased with the increasing rhamnolipid concentration (3 mg/L) and exhibited a promoted effect at 10 mg/L rhamnolipid. This surprising observation was that the increased rhamnolipid molecules gradually occupied the favorable deposition sites (i.e., the positively charged sites). In comparison, rhamnolipid facilitated OTC transport in the HA-coated sand column. The promotion effects positively correlated with rhamnolipid concentrations because of the high electrostatic repulsion and deposition site competition induced by the deposited rhamnolipid. Another interesting phenomenon was that rhamnolipid's enhanced or inhibitory effects on OTC transport declined with the increasing solution pH because of the decreased rhamnolipid deposition on porous media surfaces. These findings benefit our understanding of the environmental behaviors of antibiotics in complex soil-water systems containing biosurfactants.
