Wearable electronics have enriched daily lives by providing smart functions as well as monitoring body health conditions. However, the realization of wearable electronics with personal healthcare and thermal comfort management of the human body is still a great challenge. Furthermore, manufacturing such on-skin wearable electronics on traditional thin-film substrates results in limited gas permeability and inflammation. Herein, we proposed a personal healthcare and thermal management smart textile with a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected conductive network, formed by silver nanowires (AgNWs) bridging lamellar structured transition-metal carbide/carbonitride (MXene) nanosheets deposited on nonwoven fabrics. Benefiting from the interconnected conductive network synergistic effect of one-dimensional (1D) AgNWs bridging two-dimensional (2D) MXene, the strain sensor exhibits excellent durability (>1500 stretching cycles) and high sensitivity (gauge factor (GF) = 1085) with a wide strain range limit (∼100%), and the details of human body activities can be accurately recognized and monitored. Moreover, thanks to the excellent Joule heating and photothermal effect endowed by AgNWs and MXene, the multifunctional smart textile with direct temperature visualization and solar-powered temperature regulation functions was successfully developed, after further combination of thermochromic and phase-change functional layers, respectively. The smart textiles with a stretchable AgNW-MXene 3D conductive network hold great promise for next-generation personal healthcare and thermal management wearable systems.

The development and improvement of fabric-based stretchable strain sensors play a vital role in constructing wearable devices. In this paper, a flexible and sensitive cotton-based strain sensor for human motion monitoring was successfully developed by facile LBL-ESA (layer-by-layer electrostatic self-assembly) of chitosan (or chitosan quaternary ammonium salt) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate), abbreviated to PEDOT:PSS. Chemical structure and microscopic morphology of the cotton fabric coated with PEDOT:PSS were measured using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Scanning electron micrographs, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and color strength (K/S value). Electrical conductivity of the fabric changed with the “odd–even” oscillations of K/S value of the cotton fabric. Furthermore, cotton fabric alternately deposited with five cycles reached the highest electrical conductivity (0.335 mS/cm). Meanwhile, the fabric presents excellent UV protection capacity (maximum UPF value of 385.07), which was 24.4 times of pristine cotton fabric (15.76). In addition, cotton fabric strain sensor coated by PEDOT:PSS could effectively detect finger and knee movements of humans, showing a promising prospect in the field of human rehabilitation training, real-time monitoring, and gesture recognition due to its good stability and being highly responsive.

Due to their stretchability, conductivity, and good biocompatibility, hydrogels have been recognized as potential materials for flexible sensors. However, it is still challenging for hydrogels to meet the conductivity, mechanical strength, and freeze-resistant requirements in practice. In this study, a chitosan-poly (acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) double network (DN) hydrogel was prepared by immersing the chitosan-poly (acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) composite hydrogel into Fe2(SO4)3solution. Due to the formation of an energy-dissipative chitosan physical network, the DN hydrogel possessed excellent tensile and compression properties. Moreover, the incorporation of the inorganic salt endowed the DN hydrogel with excellent conductivity and freeze-resistance. The strain sensor prepared using this DN hydrogel displayed remarkable sensitivity and reliability in detecting stretching and bending deformations. In addition, this DN hydrogel sensor also worked well at a lower temperature (−20 °C). The highly mechanical, conductive, and freeze-resistant DN hydrogel revealed a promising application in the field of wearable devices. Keywords:hydrogel;double network;mechanical property;freeze-resistant;strain sensor

Conductive ionic gels are considered as potential flexible sensing materials owing to their softness and biocompatibility. Nevertheless, pure ionic gels typically exhibit poor mechanical properties and low sensitivity. In this study, MXene and liquid metal (LM) are introduced for self-assembly to form a spring structure. The enhanced effect of the van der Waals force synergy between the two fillers increases the tensile resistance (925 %, 1091.5 kPa), compression resistance (75 %, 2534.3 kPa) and self-healing (∼90 % recovery) efficiency of the ionic gel. In addition, the conductive paths based on double fillers are greatly destroyed during the straining process, and show a very high gauge factor (15.47) because of their unique spring structure and weak viscous force between them. This study provides a new approach for the preparation of highly sensitive sensing materials for human body monitoring and applications in other domains.

Conductive hydrogels are widely applied in wearable sensors, soft robotics, and human-interactive devices owing to their unique physicochemical properties. Herein, we prepared an ultra-adhesive poly(acrylic acid)/Feb/Li2SO4c hydrogel. The maximum peeling forces of the hydrogel with respect to an aluminum substrate and a titanium surface were 1380 and 1619 N·m–1, respectively. The elongation at break of the hydrogel was 2450%, and the breaking stress was 98 kPa. Owing to the synergistic effect of the −COOH–Fe3+ complex and H bonds, the prepared hydrogels exhibited self-healing properties. Because of the presence of lithium sulfate, the hydrogel exhibited electrical conductivity (up to 0.0195 S·cm–1). The hydrogel could be used as a strain sensor with a gauge factor of 21.12. The high sensitivity of the hydrogel enabled it to quickly respond to changes in the speed and angle of human joint movements. Therefore, the hydrogel sensor could capture signals from low-amplitude movements such as speaking, smiling, and frowning. The simple preparation strategy for an adhesive, self-healing, frost-resistant, and conductive hydrogel reported herein can broaden the range of applications of wearable electronic devices.

Currently, conductive hydrogels have received great attention as flexible strain sensors. However, the preparation of such sensors with integrated stretchability, transparency, and self-healing properties into one gel through a simple method still remains a huge challenge. Here, a fully physically crosslinked double network hydrogel was developed based on poly(hydroxyethyl acrylamide) (PHEAA) and κ-carrageenan (Car). The driving forces for physical gelation were hydrogen bonds, ion bonding, and electrostatic interactions. The resultant PHEAA-Car hydrogel displayed stretchability (1145%) and optical transparency (92%). Meanwhile, the PHEAA-Car hydrogel exhibited a self-healing property at 25 °C. Additionally, the PHEAA-Car hydrogel-based strain sensor could monitor different joint movements. Based on the above functions, the PHEAA-Car hydrogel can be applied in flexible strain sensors. Keywords:conductive hydrogel;carrageenan;self-healing;strain sensor

Recently, highly flexible strain sensors have been widely studied based on the conductive polymer composites, due to their potential applications in wearable electronics, soft robots, and human–machine interfaces. Herein, we fabricate the flexible MWCNT line/Ecoflex strain sensors by 3D printing technology to investigate the effects of preparation conditions on the performance of sensors, and find that gage factor (GF) of such sensors is effected by concentration of MWCNT/IPA solution and curing time of Ecoflex pre-polymer film. Among the obtained samples, the sensor prepared by 2 wt% MWCNT/IPA solution with curing time of 12 min has the highest gage factor, about ~ 23.87. The sensors can detect or monitor subtle motions of facial muscle, breath and pulse, and possess wide linear range besides good repeatability and excellent durability. Meanwhile, the prepared sensors were designed into a 4 × 4 array, and the array achieved monitoring of spatial distribution of the applied pressure. Our strategy could be used to fabricate flexible strain sensors with wide linear range, which facilitate further integration to achieve potential applications in detection of human activity, electronic skin, and soft robots.

One common issue when implementing wearable strain sensors for health-monitoring is the limited service time when they are inevitably subjected to mechanical operation in practical applications. Therefore, integrating multi-functionality with reliable performance is a long-term pursing target. To this end, we have developed a promising strain sensor utilising a facile 3D printing technology of digital light processing (DLP), thereby simultaneously realising super-high stretchability and intrinsic self-healing ability. Owing to the incorporation of carboxyl multi-walled carbon nanotubes (c-CNTs), the over-curing of the N-acryloylmorpholine (ACMO) resin was adequately mitigated, and good electrical conductivity of the nanocomposite was obtained. On the basis of multi-functionality, the strain sensor before and after self-healing can be applied for real-time and accurate detection of human activities. Therefore, it is expected that the highly stretchable and intrinsically self-healing strain sensor will have promising applications in wearable electronics, personal health care, etc.

Organohydrogel-based strain sensors are gaining attention for real-time healthcare and human-machine interactions because of their flexibility, stretchability, and skin-like compliance. However, these sensors often have limited sensitivity and poor stability due to their bulk structure and strain concentration during stretching. In this study, we designed and fabricated diamond-, grid-, and peanut-shaped organohydrogel based on positive, near-zero, and negative Poisson's ratios using digital light processing (DLP)-based 3D printing technology. Through structural design and optimization, the grid-shaped organohydrogel exhibited record sensitivity with gauge factors of 4.5 (0–200% strain, ionic mode) and 13.5/1.5×106 (0-2%/2-100% strain, electronic mode), alongside full resistance recovery for enhanced stability. The 3D-printed grid structure enabled direct wearability and breathability, overcoming traditional sensor limitations. Integrated with a robotic hand system, this sensor demonstrated clinical potential through precise monitoring of paralyzed patients' grasping movements (with a minimum monitoring angle of 5°). This structural design paradigm advanced flexible electronics by synergizing high sensitivity, stability, wearability, and breathability for healthcare and human-machine interfaces.

Flexible strain sensors capable of detecting minute mechanical signals and easily adaptable to various irregular surfaces have garnered significant interest for applications in structural health monitoring, early detection, and failure prevention. As state-of-the-art smart materials, these flexible strain sensors should possess highly sensitive sensing capabilities, prolonged durability, and the ability to self-repair. In this study, 1,8-diamino-P-menthane (MD) is incorporated into a waterborne polyurethane (WPU) backbone to induce a microphase separation structure that balances mechanical properties while enhancing self-healing capabilities through hydrogen bonding. Consequently, a blend of self-healing WPU, MXene, and AgNW was employed to fabricate composite conductors featuring an asymmetric continuum structure that exhibits exceptional electrical conductivity and self-healing properties. The distinctive laminate architecture of MXene enables the sensitive detection of signals generated by both bending and tensile deformation (up to 400 %).

Flexible strain sensors have attracted great attention for their important application potential in soft robot, wearable device, electronic skin, and human–computer interaction, yet there are still challenges such as the loss of service life by external force and produced electronic waste that need to be solved. Herein, a self-healable, degradable, and reprocessable lignin-based polyurethane (LPU) elastomer was synthesized for a flexible strain sensor. Owing to the formation of a cross-linking network by lignin and the reinforcement role of unreacted lignin, the tensile strength and elongation at break of the LPU elastomer reached 2.72 MPa and 712%, respectively. The plentiful hydrogen and disulfide bonds endowed the elastomer with not only good self-healing capability but also superior reprocessing performance. Importantly, the elastomer was able to be completely degraded within only 2 h in 1 mol L–1 NaOH water/ethanol solution. The LPU elastomer-based flexible strain sensor with liquid metal (LM) as the conductive material was successfully applied to detect various human motions and could restore its sensing function with the healing of the substrate and reconnection of the LM conductive layer. Moreover, the LM in the discarded sensor could be easily recycled to prepare the sensor after the degradation of the LPU substrate. The functional and environmentally friendly biobased elastomer will greatly promote the sustainable development and application of flexible electronics.

The rapid development of wearable sensors has indeed driven the demand for multifunctional conductive soft materials to new heights. However, conventional flexible strain sensors are difficult to adapt to complex environments due to poor mechanical properties, susceptibility to freezing deactivation at low temperatures and insufficient long-term stability. In this study, acrylamide (AAm), [2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl (3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide (DMAPS), and octadecyl acrylate (SA) were copolymerized in a glycerol/water system by one-step photopolymerization and PEDOT: PSS was introduced to construct a super stretching antifreeze amphiphilic ion hydrogel (HADP). Its synergistic network, comprising hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and high entanglement, endows it with exceptional properties: a tensile strength of 230 kPa, a strain at break of 5295%, a fracture toughness of 64 MJ m-3, and the ability to retain 3344.5% strain and 194.73 kPa strength even after 7 days of storage at -20°C. Based on high sensitivity (GF=4.55), wide detection range (5-500% strain) and fast response of 0.19 s, the HADP can accurately monitor movements such as joint bending and swallowing and realize encrypted information transmission via Morse code. This study provides a paradigm of high-performance materials and multifunctional integrated design for wearable electronics in complex environments.
