Pea isolate protein/β-cyclodextrin/CQDs microcapsules improve stability and in vitro sustained release of fish oil

Wenyuchu Chen,Fang Tian,Yongjing Xu,Yujin Li,Weiliang Guan,Chenyang Lu,Sheng Hu,Luyun Cai

Fish oils (FOs) are rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which provide several health benefits. However, their oral bioavailability and stability are often limited due to the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which degrade the oil's nutritional and sensory properties over time. In this study, FO microcapsules were prepared using pea protein isolate (PPI), β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as wall materials through a freeze-drying method. The results demonstrated that the use of PPI/β-CD/CQDs composite significantly improved the encapsulation efficiency, stability, and antioxidant properties of the microcapsules, suggesting a promising approach for enhancing the shelf-life and health benefits of fish oil. Additionally, the peroxide value (POV) and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) values of the microcapsules increased with temperature and storage time. Notably, the incorporation of CQDs markedly improved the antioxidant properties of the microcapsules, thereby extending their storage stability. In vitro gastrointestinal digestion simulations demonstrated that microencapsulation facilitated the absorption of beneficial substances in fish oil within the human gut. This study offers valuable insights into the development of more efficient fish oil microcapsules for potential applications in food and pharmaceutical applications.

Protective Effect of Whey Protein and Polysaccharide Complexes on Lactobacillus paracasei F50: Comparative Analysis of Powder Characteristics and Stability

Xinrui Zhang,Xiaowei Peng,Huijing Chen,Aijun Li,Gang Yang,Jianquan Kan

To enhance Lactobacillus paracei F50 viability during spray drying and long-term storage, this study evaluates whey protein (WP) crosslinked with four polysaccharides (κ-carrageenan (KC), xanthan gum (XG), low-methoxyl pectin (LMP), sodium alginate (SA)) for the first time as protective matrices for L. paracasei F50 during spray drying. The four kinds of crosslinked wall materials were compared by various characterization methods. Among them, the WP-κ-carrageenan (WP-KC) composite exhibited optimal performance, forming a uniform microcapsule with high colloidal stability. After spray drying, WP-KC achieved the highest viable cell density (9.62 lg CFU/g) and survival rate (91.85%). Notably, WP-KC maintained viability above 8.68 lg CFU/g after 120 days of storage at 4 °C, surpassing other formulations. Structural analysis showed that the WP-KC microcapsule was completely encapsulated without breaking or leaking and confirmed the molecular interaction between WP and KC. Under the condition of high temperatures (≤142.63 °C), the wall material of the microcapsule does not undergo any endothermic or exothermic process and is in a state of thermodynamic equilibrium, with excellent stability and good dispersion. Additionally, microcapsules exhibited enhanced resistance to thermal stress (55–75 °C) and UV irradiation, higher than that of free cells. These results highlight WP-KC as an industrially viable encapsulation system for improving probiotic stability in functional foods, offering critical insights into polysaccharide–protein interactions for optimized delivery systems.

Preparation and performance study of photo-initiated self-healing self-warning microencapsulated coated fabrics

Wanqin Gong,Jun Cheng,Wu Yan,Hantao Zou,Chao Gao,Xueting Liu,Lin Wang

Microcracks on the surface and inside inevitably occur during processing and use. The use of photo-initiated, self-healing, self-warning microcapsules to repair and monitor these microcracks is of practical importance to prolong the life of coated fabrics. In this work, the microcapsules (EP/FA/SiO 2 ) with SiO 2 as wall material, epoxy resin , fluorescent agent and cationic photoinitiator as core material were prepared using the interfacial in situ polymerization method . The self-healing self-warning PVC coated fabric was obtained by scraper coating method. The self-healing, self-warning and mechanical properties of the coated fabric were characterized. The results show that the microcapsules have an encapsulation efficiency of 79 % and a core-wall structure. The wall thickness is about 200 nm and the particle size is 1.7 μm. The microcapsules have excellent thermal stability below 320 °C. The microcapsules have good dispersion in the PVC coating surface and the repair agent has good wettability in the PVC coating surface . When the cuts expand, the previously embedded microcapsules break open and release the fluorescent active ingredient and the repair agent of the capsule core. Under UV light irradiation, the scratches may show a yellow fluorescence to indicate the location of the damage to the coating. The repair agent (epoxy resin) fills the cuts and then polymerizes with the cationic photoinitiator under UV light. As the exposure time increases, the cut gradually narrows and the strength of the coated fabric increases. After 36 h of UV exposure, the cut disappears and the strength of the coated fabric is 742 N, reaching the strength (768 N) of the fabric before scratching. This indicates that the coated fabric has a good photo-initiated self-healing effect.

Morning Glory-Inspired Dual-Function Microcapsules for the Self-Reporting and Self-Healing of Electrothermal-Induced Damage of Electrical Devices

Potao Sun,Zhaoping Li,Wenxia Sima,Tao Yuan,Ming Yang,Kaisen Fan,Xiaoxiao Chen,Wenlong Pang

The long-term operation of power equipment and power electronics can cause local overheating and discharges in the insulation material, resulting in irreversible insulation damage. Further development of such damage can eventually lead to equipment failure, but this problem is very difficult to solve. In this paper, inspired by how the petals of morning glory change color with the environment due to the presence of pigmented globules, a dual-function heat alert in the form of a self-healing (HASH) microcapsule with a nested structure is prepared by using microfluidic technology. By combination of the microcapsule with the insulation material, the local overheating in equipment can be detected promptly under live operating conditions without manual external intervention, and the defects that occur can be repaired autonomously. These HASH microcapsules can be pre-embedded in places at which the material is prone to overheating using artificial magnetic targeting. The doping of the matrix material with microcapsules does not cause any deterioration in its electrical or mechanical properties. This technology is expected to be applied to electrical equipment and electronic devices to allow for the early detection of local overheating and the autonomous repair of defects, thereby ensuring the safety of the equipment and improving its service life.

Influence of external environment on self-repairing ability of the cement-based materials containing paraffin/toluene-di-isocyanate microcapsules

Wei Du,Quantao Liu,Runsheng Lin,Jianying Yu

Internal microcracks that occur in cement-based materials during the service process could be self-repaired using microcapsules. However, the chemical activity of the repairing agent is affected by the external environment. In this paper, the self-repairing ability of mortar containing paraffin/toluene-di-isocyanate (TDI) microcapsules was studied under different external environment (humidity and temperature). The pore size distribution , mechanical properties , impermeability and surface crack width of the control mortar (CM) and mortar containing microcapsules (MM) were measured and compared. The reaction kinetics of TDI during the self-repairing process of MM was investigated using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetics models. The self-repairing ability of MM was enhanced when increasing RH (relative humidity) from 50% to 95% at 20 ℃. When MM was kept under 60%f c0 pre-load and allowed 7 d for self-repairing at a relative humidity of 95%, the proportion of harmful pores, compressive strength reserved ratio and chloride diffusion coefficient recovery ratio were 28.1%, 80.9% and 68.1%, respectively, and cracks with an initial width of 0.4–0.5 mm self-repaired within 6 h. With the increasing of temperatures, the self-repairing ability increased at first but then declined. When the temperature was 50 ℃ at 50% RH, the proportion of harmful pores, compressive strength reserved ratio and chloride diffusion coefficient recovery ratio of MM under 60%f c0 pre-load for 7 d of self-repairing were 25.8%, 83.5% and 72.1%, respectively, and cracks with an initial width of 0.4–0.5 mm self-repaired within 5 h. Under different external environment and pre-loads, the curing reaction of TDI during the self-repairing process of MM was a pseudo-second-order kinetics model, which indicated that the humidity and temperature had a significant impact on the self-repairing ability of the mortar.

Long alkyl chain-grafted carbon nanotube-decorated binary-core phase-change microcapsules for heat energy storage: Synthesis and thermal properties

Xiao Meng,Siyin Qin,Hongbo Fan,Zhaowen Huang,Jiaoling Hong,Xiaoying Xu,Xing Ouyang,Da-Zhu Chen

Microencapsulated phase-change materials (MPCMs) with carbon nanotube (CNT)-enhanced fillers and binary cores, which exhibit improved thermal conductivity and an adjustable working temperature range, are highly desirable for various heat energy storage applications. However, degraded properties are usually found for the CNT-enhanced MPCMs due to the poor compatibility of CNTs with PCMs, and the existing types of binary-core MPCMs (BCMPCMs) are quite limited. Herein, we prepared a novel type of BCMPCM with a n -octadecane/ n -octacosane (C18/C28) mixture as the core, octadecyl isocyanate-grafted CNTs (OICNTs) as the enhancers and melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin as the shell via in situ polymerization. Morphological and structural characterization of the OICNT-enhanced BCMPCMs demonstrated uniform distributions of OICNTs in both the core and shell. The determined phase-change temperatures were approximately 26 °C and 43 °C, with small degrees of supercooling. The phase-change enthalpy was as high as 187.9 J/g for a relatively large OICNT loading (3 wt%). Thermal conductivity measurements of the OICNT-enhanced BCMPCM/epoxy resin composites showed a 71.4% increase over that of the pure BCMPCM/epoxy resin composite. Moreover, the BCMPCMs experienced two separate temperature buffer stages resulting from the phase-change processes and exhibited a prominent thermal regulation capacity, which is of significance for their potential applications in the cooling of electronic devices, battery thermal management, utilization of waste heat, and air conditioning systems, etc.

Preparation and characterization of β-cyclodextrin–oregano essential oil microcapsule and its effect on storage behavior of purple yam

Haohe Huang,Chongxing Huang,Cheng Yin,Muhammad RU Khan,Hui Zhao,Yangfan Xu,Lijie Huang,Dantong Zheng,Minghui Qi

BACKGROUND Natural plant essential oils have antimicrobial properties; however, essential oils are difficult to maintain in a system because of their volatile nature. First, we prepared microcapsules from β -cyclodextrin and oregano essential oil and characterized their properties. Second, the effect of microcapsules on the preservation of freshly cut purple yam was studied using an edible coating technique. Purple yams immersed in distilled water were used as control, and their characteristics were compared with yams coated with citric acid, citric acid + sodium alginate, and citric acid + sodium alginate + β -cyclodextrin–oregano essential oil microcapsules (CA–SA–MC) and stored at 4 °C for 5 days. RESULTS Microcapsules of oregano essential oil and β -cyclodextrin solution were successfully prepared via the inclusion method, with an optimal encapsulation efficiency of 55.14%. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis showed strong bonds between β -cyclodextrin and oregano essential oil. All edible coatings, particularly CA–SA–MC, significantly ( P ≤ 0.05) maintained firmness, total soluble solids, ascorbic acid content, and anthocyanin content compared with control treatment. This treatment also prevented browning and extended the shelf life of purple yam. CONCLUSION Oregano essential oil can be successfully encapsulated into cyclodextrin microcapsules. It has a great impact on the shelf life extension of purple yam and could be successfully applied to other fresh produce. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry

Infrared camouflage fabric prepared by paraffin phase change microcapsule with Good thermal insulting properties

Rui Xu,Xiaomeng Xia,Wei Wang,Dan Yu

With the rapid development of infrared detection technology and infrared precision guidance of weapons, infrared camouflage has important meanings. Paraffin, a kind of phase change material (PCM) is used as the core material of microcapsules and urea-formaldehyde resin as a shell material to prepare phase change microcapsules (MPCMs) by in-situ polymerization, and then coated on the fabric to get infrared camouflage fabric. Ultrasound cell pulverizer is used for phacoemulsification with short emulsification time to obtain uniform and stable emulsion. The as-prepared fabric was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared thermal imaging test, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and temperature change test. The encapsulation ratio of the MPCMs was calculated to be 60.1 %. The average particle size of the MPCMs was 425.7 nm. Compared to unfinished fabrics, infrared camouflage fabrics can reduce temperatures by 5–10 ℃ and so is the infrared emissivity. The results showed that the prepared fabric had a certain degree of infrared camouflage ability since the ability to adjust with temperature changes is significant and infrared heat radiation can be effectively reduced. Based on these effects we believe this study can offer a promising strategy for the preparation of infrared camouflage fabrics both on laboratory and industrial scales.

A pesticide sustained-release microcapsule from cellulose nanocrystal stabilized Pickering emulsion template

Cai-xia Yang,Jun Li,Yu-qing Zhang,Chao Wu,De-qiang Li

Efficient utilization of pesticides has presented various advantages in the ecological environment, food safety, and agricultural sustainability. Pesticide microcapsule could significantly improve the pesticide utilization ratio, and thus, we prepared a sustained-release microcapsule from cellulose nanocrystal (CNCs) stabilized Pickering emulsion template. The NaCl was added to overcome the strong electrostatic repulsion among CNCs for forming a stable oil-in-water (O/W) CNCs-based Pickering emulsion template, followed by crosslinking with hexamethylene diisocyanate on the interface. UV–vis and zeta-potential were used to characterize the as-prepared Pickering emulsion, and the stability and emulsion fraction were calculated. Results indicated that NaCl contributed to the stability of Pickering emulsion, even at a low concentration. The obtained CNCs-based microcapsule was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TG-DTG, and three-phase contact angles. The microcapsule presented an encapsulation efficiency of 96.76% and sustained release of the imidacloprid for more than 82 h. Results indicated the potential for loading and sustained release of imidacloprid, which is beneficial to the environment, food, and agriculture.

Complex coacervation microcapsules by tannic acid crosslinking prolong the antifungal activity of cinnamaldehyde against Aspergillus brasiliensis

Wenyi Chen,Shuqin Xia,Chaogeng Xiao

The antifungal activity and encapsulation properties of cinnamaldehyde-loaded microcapsules by tannic acid were investigated. The results showed that cinnamaldehyde exhibited a high in vitro antifungal effect against Aspergillus brasiliensis through altering the morphology of the hyphae, and its inhibition zone diameter (IZD) exceeded 15 mm with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 1.0 mg/mL. Cinnamaldehyde-loaded microcapsules crosslinked with tannic acid have a high encapsulation efficiency (92.53 ± 5.20%) and antifungal activity (37.82 ± 0.63 mm), and the retention rate was 2.5 times of that of unencapsulated cinnamaldehyde after 30-d storage at 37 °C. Furthermore, the antifungal stability was enhanced (IZD 25.37 mm) after 60-d storage at 37 °C as compared with that of cinnamaldehyde (IZD 22.07 mm). The results of cell membrane integrity and the extracellular protein content also indicated that the microencapsulation could effectively protect cinnamaldehyde, delay the decrease of antifungal effect and improve its long-term antifungal activity against A. brasiliensis by increasing the retention rate of cinnamaldehyde after storage.

Amphiphilicity-Driven Small Alcohols Regulate the Flexibility of Pesticide-Loaded Microcapsules for Better Foliar Adhesion and Utilization

Haichao Cao,Yue Chen,Zhigang Qian,Tingjie Huang,Nan Zou,Daxia Zhang,Wei Mu,Beixing Li,Feng Liu

The foliar loss of pesticides causes serious utilization decline and environmental risk. On the basis of biomimetics, pesticide-loaded microcapsules (MCs) with spontaneous deformation on foliar micro/nanostructures, like the snail suction cup, are prepared by interfacial polymerization. By controlling the usage or types of small alcohols in the MC preparation system, the flexibility of MCs is tunable. Through the investigation of emulsions and MC structures, we discover that the migration and distribution of small alcohols driven by amphiphilicity affect the process of interfacial polymerization between polyethylene glycol and 4,4-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate. By hydrophobic modification of the polymer and competition for oil monomers of small alcohols, the thickness and compactness of shells are reduced, whereas the density of the core is increased. As a result of the regulation in structures, the flexibility of MCs is improved significantly. In particularly, the MCs-N-pentanol (0.1 mol kg–1) with the best flexibility show strong scouring resistance on varied foliar structures, sustained release property on the air/solid interface, and persistent control effect against foliar diseases. The pesticide-loaded soft MCs provide an effective way to improve pesticide foliar utilization.
