Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels have drawn enormous attention but are severely limited on account of poor mechanical properties at subzero temperatures. Here, we propose a simple method to tackle this problem by incorporating chain entanglements of PVA chains and coordination bonds between Al 3+ ions and –OH groups via air-drying and soaking in Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 solution. The multiple dynamic interactions worked in tandem to achieve outstanding mechanical performance (41.0 MPa of fracture stress and 49.9 MJ/m 3 of toughness). Meanwhile, the introduction of ions endowed the PVA hydrogel with excellent anti-freezing property (36.9 MPa of fracture stress and 51.4 MJ/m 3 of toughness at −20 ℃), superior to most anti-freezing gels at subzero temperatures. The facile synthesis and superior properties might expand the application of PVA hydrogels.

Conductive hydrogels are ideal materials for preparing wearable strain sensing devices due to their flexibility and stretchability. However, most hydrogels exhibit poor freezing resistance and weak water-holding ability, thus hindering the working range of hydrogel-based sensors in extreme environments. Here, a conductive hydrogel featuring conspicuous anti-freezing and water retention abilities was prepared by integrating amylose (AMY) into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/glycerol/NaCl hydrogel. AMY possesses a number of hydroxyl groups, which could interact with PVA and glycerin via hydrogen bonds, enhancing the toughness of the hydrogel. Meanwhile, based on the strong hydrogen bonding between glycerol and water molecules, the hydrogel displayed water-retaining properties after 7 days of storage in an open environment. The synergistic action of NaCl and glycerol prevented the crystallization of water at low temperatures, endowing the hydrogel with outstanding conductivity and stretchability at −20 °C. Furthermore, the hydrogel-based wearable strain sensor exhibited excellent sensitivity (GF = 2.55), fast response/recovery time, and good durability and biocompatibility, which accurately detected joint movements and physiological signals at room temperature or under extreme conditions. Therefore, conductive hydrogels would possess significant application prospects in health detection, disease diagnosis, and artificial intelligence.

Hydrogel based flexible sensors have been considered as promising wearable devices in human–machine interactions, which are of great significance in mobile communications, personal healthcare, and intelligent robots. To meet the requirements of practical applications especially in harsh environments, a multifunctional strain sensor was designed and fabricated based on the polydopamine–reduced oxide graphene/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/polyacrylamide composite organohydrogel (PCOH) using ethylene glycol (Eg)–H2O binary solvent as the replacement medium, which displayed an excellent anti-freezing property (−40 °C for 24 h) owing to the low freezing point of the Eg in the PCOH, high self-healing efficiency (92% tensile strength and 90% elongation at break), excellent stretchability (1350%), high sensitivity (a gauge factor of 3.19 with the strain ranging from 0 to 500%), fast response time (90 ms), long durability (800 cycles), and a wide temperature detection range (−40 °C to 60 °C), respectively. When used as a strain sensor, it was able to detect various human motions such as finger, wrist, and knee movements, and facial micro-expressions. Moreover, we also attached the flexible sensor to the yoga equipment or a neck brace for practical applications, and it could also detect the movements of the human body. Specifically, as a wearable human–machine interface device, a smart glove that takes advantage of the excellent properties of the PCOH was developed for hand gesture recognition via transmitting data to a smart phone with a real-time display via a bluetooth wireless system. Thus, these multifunctional PCOH based strain sensors have broad application prospects in human–machine interactions, sports training, and personal healthcare.

The demand for multifunctional hydrogels, offering high mechanical strength, efficient cooling, and antimicrobial properties, is growing in food preservation. Here, a dual-network (DN) hydrogel PM@Cur , which includes curcumin, is fabricated through chemical crosslinking and hydrogen bonding interactions. The resulting hydrogels can withstand more than five freeze-thaw cycles at −80 °C, and resist brittleness after liquid nitrogen treatment. PM@Cur also exhibits surface hydrophobicity (contact angle >90°) for both water and organic solvents. These properties meet the mechanical, anti-fouling, and recyclable demands for hydrogel coolants. The antimicrobial assays in vitro confirmed that the inclusion of curcumin provided the PM@Cur with photodynamic antimicrobial capacity. Finally, the prepared PM@Cur hydrogel ice cubes have been confirmed to exhibit better anti-melting properties than traditional ice cubes, thus enabling the preservation of strawberries and shrimp. This study presents an innovative solution for producing advanced functional integrated hydrogels, offering a promising and safer option for food coolants.\.

To get strong and anti-freezing hydrogel with multiple contact and non-contact sensing performance, a facial method is proposed in this work using multiple physical bonding crosslinking and glycerol (GL) immersing strategy. The obtained hydrogels show a tensile stress at break of 5.4 MPa, an elongation at break of 1420 %, and a compression strength of 12.2 MPa at 80 % strain. Additionally, benefiting from the GL immersing the hydrogel shows superior anti-freezing (no ice formation at −60 °C) and water retention ability (water loss less than 17 % after storing at 50 °C for 7 h). Furthermore, the volume resistance of hydrogels exhibits excellent responses against humidity, temperature, strain, and stress. The variation of the resistance against temperature can be well described by the Arrhenius equation with an activation energy of 501.3 meV, verifying a band-gap dominated diffusion hopping conductive mechanism of the hydrogel. The sufficient humidity and temperature responses make the hydrogel applicable as a non-contact sensor, and the wide temperature strain sensing (−40 to 50 °C) and stress sensing capability ensures that the hydrogel can be used as a contact sensor, ensuring that the hydrogel can be used as perfect flexible sensor for monitoring human motion and physiological signals.

Hydrogels have emerged as transformative materials in human–machine interfaces due to its similarity to natural biological tissues. However, existing hydrogels generally suffer from inherent drawbacks such as low mechanical strength, insufficient conformability, and poor environmental tolerance, which severely limit long-term, reliable, and seamless interactions between humans and machines. In this study, a synergistic strategy of fiber reinforcement and solvent displacement is employed to develop an ultrathin, tough, anti-freezing, and anti-dehydration composite hydrogel interface. Benefiting from the efficient energy dissipation and stress transfer mechanisms of the styrene ethylene butylene styrene/polyurethane (SEBS/PU) composite fibers, the resulting 20 μm ultrathin hydrogel exhibits exceptional mechanical properties, with a fracture elongation of 676.7 %, toughness of 2.78 MJ m −3 , and Young’s modulus of 544.7 kPa, enabling conformal interfacing with multiple human skin regions. Furthermore, the glycerol/water binary solvent system, through hydrogen bonding with water molecules, imparts the hydrogel with excellent anti-freezing and anti-dehydration properties. Notably, epidermal electrodes designed from this hydrogel achieve seamless integration with human skin, enabling long-term, high-fidelity (31.41 dB) electrophysiological signal monitoring, demonstrating significant potential for applications in wearable health monitoring, medical diagnostics, and augmented reality systems.

The rapid advancement of wearable electrophysiological monitoring has driven a growing demand for soft, conductive materials, particularly hydrogels, due to their exceptional mechanical properties, high conductivity, and biocompatibility. However, hydrogel materials are prone to freezing at subzero temperatures, which leads to material failure. Additionally, prefabricated hydrogel electrodes often lack sufficient conformability and long-term stability, thereby limiting their practical applications. We report a skin-printable hydrogel-based epidermal bioelectrode designed for continuous, high-precision wireless electrophysiological monitoring. The hydrogel, synthesized via an effective one-pot process, comprises gelatin, glycerol, ammonium chloride, and water. Its reversible thermal phase transition enables precise printing onto glabrous and hairy human skin. The in-situ formed hydrogel electrode exhibits excellent adhesion at both the hydrogel/skin and hydrogel/electrode interfaces, with adhesion force reaching 0.9 N/cm and 2.6 N/cm, respectively. The incorporation of glycerol and ammonium chloride imparts remarkable anti-freezing properties, allowing the hydrogel to maintain outstanding mechanical flexibility across a broad temperature range, from ultra-low temperatures of −80 °C to the phase transition temperature of 43.9 °C. Remarkably, the hydrogel retains its optical transparency even when immersed in liquid nitrogen. Additionally, the hydrogel demonstrates superior self-healing, high water retention, and recyclable properties. We successfully validated the hydrogel’s potential for personalized healthcare through high-fidelity electrocardiogram recordings over 80 min during various daily activities, demonstrating its practical applicability. This work highlights the versatility and functionality of skin-printable hydrogel as a promising material for next-generation epidermal electronics.

Traditional self-healing hydrogels have great application prospects in biological engineering because of their extremely high water content, but their durability cannot be easily guaranteed. Therefore, developing a rapid self-healing hydrogel with long-lasting water retention capacity is still a significant challenge. A high-strength and fast self-healing hydrogel with an interpenetrating double network based on polyvinyl alcohol/agar-ethylene glycol (PVA/agar-EG) is proposed. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and agar are designed for the construction of the interpenetrating network. Furthermore, the introduction of a borate-bonding dynamic action mode affords the hydrogel with extraordinary mechanical strength and rapid self-healing. The addition of EG as a traveling solvent enables the sample to retain water and prevents freezing in harsh environments, including at high temperatures of 80 °C and extremely low temperatures of −40 °C. Additionally, owing to the intelligent remolding ability of the PVA/agar-EG hydrogel, the material can be recycled to prolong the service life of the hydrogel. Overall, the PVA/agar-EG hydrogel developed in this study can provide a new general strategy for the development of intelligent self-healing devices, and hydrogels can be applied in complex environmental engineering.

Sweet-waxy corn is susceptible to chilling injury, and vulnerable to be counterfeited. This study developed a kind of newly thermoresponsive coating material with dual efficacies of intelligent chilling-resistant and anti-counterfeiting for maize seed. The coating material was named as PRBSA, which was made of salicylic acid (SA) and rhodamine B (RB) co-loaded poly (N-isopropylacrylamide-co-butylmethacrylate) hydrogel. The surface morphology of PRBSA was compact than its interior, where it was uneven and irregularly distributed pore structure . Below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST), PRBSA was water-soluble and hydrophilic, loaded SA and RB could release sharply from PRBSA, whereas above this LCST, PRBSA formed an insoluble and hydrophobic aggregate, the release rate of SA and RB was obviously decreased. Meanwhile, PRBSA showed a better thermal stability than unloaded hydrogel. In addition, seeds were coated with PRBSA, and its seedling quality and fluorescence labeling under chilling stress were determined. These results showed that compared with the CK (basic coating agent), PRBSA treatment significantly enhanced seed germination percentage by 17.8% and vigor index by 53.1% under chilling stress. The seedling shoot height and dry weight were also significantly improved, which might closely related with the lowest malondialdehyde and relative electrical conductivity level, and the highest maximal quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm). Moreover, the surface of PRBSA coated seeds showed bright red fluorescence under the excitation green light of 546 nm. When responding to low temperatures, its fluorescence intensity exhibited a sharp decline, showing a temperature-sensitive release of RB. Therefore, PRBSA was considered as a novel seed coating with intelligent chilling-resistant and anti-counterfeiting function.

Due to their stretchability, conductivity, and good biocompatibility, hydrogels have been recognized as potential materials for flexible sensors. However, it is still challenging for hydrogels to meet the conductivity, mechanical strength, and freeze-resistant requirements in practice. In this study, a chitosan-poly (acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) double network (DN) hydrogel was prepared by immersing the chitosan-poly (acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) composite hydrogel into Fe2(SO4)3solution. Due to the formation of an energy-dissipative chitosan physical network, the DN hydrogel possessed excellent tensile and compression properties. Moreover, the incorporation of the inorganic salt endowed the DN hydrogel with excellent conductivity and freeze-resistance. The strain sensor prepared using this DN hydrogel displayed remarkable sensitivity and reliability in detecting stretching and bending deformations. In addition, this DN hydrogel sensor also worked well at a lower temperature (−20 °C). The highly mechanical, conductive, and freeze-resistant DN hydrogel revealed a promising application in the field of wearable devices. Keywords:hydrogel;double network;mechanical property;freeze-resistant;strain sensor

Though numerous patterned electrochromic (EC) displays have been developed, a low-cost, eco-friendly and convenient strategy for fabricating customizable EC displays with great low and high temperature adaptability is still desired urgently. Herein, an antifreezing and self-healing EC oganohydrogel with reversible Schiff base linkages was prepared facilely through mixing a chitosan solution based on a water/ethylene glycol (EG) binary solvent and a dibenzaldehyde-modified poly(ethylene oxide) aqueous solution, and its mechanical and electrochromic properties can be regulated by EG content. The optimized gel exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 0.2 mS cm −1 at -60 ℃ and the EC gel-based device shows great cyclic stability with 99%, 98% and 95% optical modulation retention after 1000 cycles at different temperature of -30 ℃, 20 ℃ and 45 ℃, respectively. By extruding the EC gels from syringes onto transparent electrodes to form the specific patterns or characters, a series of customized EC displays for convey information were obtained. Such EC displays are expected to exhibit unique advantages over a wide operating temperature range and become a paradigm for future EC displays manufacturing.

Nature-inspired natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) as anti-freezing agents including Pro:Glc (5:3), Pro:Glc (1:1), Pro:Sor (1:1), and Urea:Glc:CaCl 2 (3:6:1) were prepared. Viscosity ( η ), conductivity ( σ ), activation energy of viscous flow ( E η ) and conduction ( E ᴧ ), transverse relaxation time (T 2 ), thermal behaviours, and anti-freezing capacities of the NADESs were investigated. A critical T 2 of 24.60 ms for η changes was obtained, and the relationship between η and T 2 was determined as ln η = -1.398lnT 2 + 10.688. Differential scanning calorimetry and low-field nuclear magnetic resonance analyses indicated NADESs could hinder the molecular motion as temperature decreased through enhancing the hydrogen-bonding strength, endowing them with excellent anti-freezing capacity. NADESs showed varied E η (41.58 ∼ 45.72 kJ mol −1 ) and E ᴧ (48.31 ∼ 63.08 kJ mol −1 ), of which Pro:Sor (1:1) possessed the greatest ones, showing its greatest temperature sensitivity and best anti-frosting capacity. Applications in frozen chicken breast further announced the potentials of NADESs as anti-freezing agents for the industry.
