Enhancing triboelectric nanogenerator performance using chitosan-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes

Irfan Khan,Saad Ahmed,Zeeshan Haider,Kashan Memon,Azam Fareed

The rising demand for a sustainable and immaculate energy source on a global scale is fascinating regarding the usage and potential effects of green energy. Triboelectric nanogenerators have emerged as some of the major green energy sources, converting mechanical energy into electrical energy by using different electropositive and tribonegative materials. We used surface-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes incorporated with a chitosan membrane as a tribopositive material in triboelectric nanogenerators for improved efficiency. We demonstrate that the chitosan-modified multiwalled carbon nanotube-based tribopositive material with PDMS as the tribonegative layer with a constant device size of 2 × 2 cm2 produced a short circuit current density (Jsc) of 42.004 mA m−2, an open circuit voltage (Voc) of 244.90 volts, and a peak power density of 4.22 W m−2, which can light up more than hundreds of LED lights. The high electrical performance of chitosan-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes as a tribopositive material is attributed to the increased surface roughness and charge separation without causing significant charge leakage, which is produced by carbon nanotubes. Henceforth, the present work successfully introduces the use of chitosan-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes as a tribopositive material for enhancing the TENG's output performance.

Feature-Reinforced Strategy for Enhancing the Accuracy of Triboelectric Vibration Sensing Toward Mechanical Equipment Monitoring

Junjun Huang,Yuting Zong,Yue Liu,Kunhong Hu,Ben Wang,Xingke Zhao,Tao Jiang,Zhanyong Hong,Zhong Lin Wang

With the advancement of intelligent and refined manufacturing, the demand for vibration sensors in smart equipment has surged. Traditional commercial vibration sensors and triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-based sensors are limited to basic amplitude and frequency recognition, failing to address both self-powering and diagnostic needs due to inherent design constraints. To overcome these limitations, this study introduces a novel mechanism combining interface dipole energy and vacuum level optimization in triboelectric materials to explain charge generation and separation under vibration. A TENG device with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-encapsulated metal electrode is designed and developed, enabling the precise recognition of equipment operating status through vibration waveform analysis. By optimizing interface contact area and electron transfer capacity, the device achieves enhanced signal clarity and the introduction of subtler characteristics in the signal waveform. Furthermore, the integration of a deep learning algorithm enables high-resolution classification of vibration states with an accuracy of 98.3% approximately, achieving effective monitoring of the operating status of the jaw crusher and vibrating screen. This work not only verifies the feasibility of designing a self-powered vibration sensor but also demonstrates its potential for real-time monitoring and diagnostic applications in smart equipment.

Hierarchical Structure by Self-sedimentation of Liquid Metal for Flexible Sensor Integrating Pressure Detection and Triboelectric Nanogenerator

Lida Zhu,Peihua Xu,Baoquan Chang,Jinsheng Ning,Tianming Yan,Zhichao Yang,Hao Lu

Multifunctional integration is a pivotal aspect in the development of flexible sensors that facilitate augmented interaction with the physical environment. However, contemporary multifunctional flexible sensors face challenges arising from their complex structures and high costs. Therefore, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) /liquid metal (LM) films with a hierarchical structure prepared via the gravity-induced deposition of LM are applied to multifunctional flexible sensors. PDMS/LM films exhibit remarkable flexibility and function as flexible electrodes for pressure sensors as well as a single-electrode mode triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG). The porous PDMS/carbon nanotube (CNT) dielectric with an array structure is developed for pressure sensing, showing commendable sensitivity (0.671 kPa −1 ) even under low pressures (0–17 kPa). Compared with solid and porous dielectrics, its sensitivity is improved over the entire pressure range. The sensor achieves a response time of ≈80 ms and demonstrates exceptional stability. Furthermore, when the PDMS/LM film with a hierarchical structure functions as a TENG, it can serve as a self-powered sensor for measuring dynamic forces and aid in material recognition with the assistance of capacitive pressure sensing. This study provides a new perspective on the simplified design and integration of multifunctional flexible sensors.

Electrodeless Nanogenerator for Dust Recover

Wanli Wang,Dongfang Yang,Zhenxing Huang,Han Hu,Licheng Wang,Kai Wang

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has the advantages of low cost, low weight, simple structure, and high efficiency. It is a promising low-frequency mechanical energy capture technology, which shows great potential in dealing with energy and environmental crisis and promoting new electronic products. TENGs have demonstrated irreplaceable design freedom over traditional electronic devices, including its ability to work independently of electrodes. In fact, the displacement current is an unreal current, it can work independently without electrodes. Moreover, due to the lack of “shielding effect” of the electrode, the surface potential can be larger than devices worked with electrodes. Here, based on TENG's high-voltage characteristic without electrode, the application of dust removal is explored, and a kind of electrodeless polyethylene triboelectric blackboard eraser was demonstrated as an example, which can effectively restrain the flying of chalk dust (limit the dust diffusion within 0.648 m). The electrostatic charge decayed blackboard eraser can be recharged by the electrodeless TENG without requirement of electrodes establishment. In fact, contact electrification may happen frequently in natural environment, and further design may be achieved without the limitation of electrodes.

Realizing the Capability of Negatively Charged Graphene Oxide in the Presence of Conducting Polyaniline for Performance Enhancement of Tribopositive Material of Triboelectric Nanogenerator

Rafi u Shan Ahmad,Abdul Haleem,Zeeshan Haider,Uzabakiriho Pierre Claver,Azam Fareed,Irfan Khan,Momoh Karmah Mbogba,Kashan Memon,Wajahat Ali,Weidong He,Peng Hu,Gang Zhao

In recent years, tremendous efforts have been made to investigate tribomaterials for triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), but due to their low performance there is still need of tribomaterials with new mechanisms for performance enhancement. Therefore, in this study, the potential of conducting polyaniline and tribonegative graphene oxide is exploited for performance enhancement of tribopositive material through a new mechanism of disturbing the equilibrium state inside the tribopositive material under an impact force. Thus, a TENG device made up of polymer with 700 µL polyaniline and 4 mg mL −1 graphene oxide as tribopositive and polydimethylsiloxane as a tribonegative layer with a dimension of 1 × 2 cm 2 is able to produce an open-circuit voltage of 314.92 V and a current density of 37.81 mA m −2 with a peak power density of 10.43 W m −2 , which can directly power ON more than 175 white light-emitting diodes. Amine group of polyaniline and its pathway to mobilize electrons inside the tribopositive material due to electron accepting ability of graphene oxide upon physical contact under external force are the main contributing factors toward performance enhancement. This work introduces a low cost, easy fabrication process with a new method for performance enhancement of tribopositive material to acquire a high performance TENGs.

UV-Protective, Self-Cleaning, and Antibacterial Nanofiber-Based Triboelectric Nanogenerators for Self-Powered Human Motion Monitoring

Yang Jiang,Kai Dong,Jie An,Fei Liang,Jia Yi,Xiao Peng,Chuan Ning,Cuiying Ye,Zhong Lin Wang

Equipping wearable electronics with special functions will endow them with more additional values and more comprehensive practical performance. Here, we report an ultraviolet (UV)-protective, self-cleaning, antibacterial, and self-powered all-nanofiber-based triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) for mechanical energy harvesting and self-powered sensing, which is fabricated with Ag nanowires (NWs)/TPU nanofibers and the TiO2@PAN networks through a facile electrospinning method. Due to the added TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs), the TENG presents excellent UV-protective performance, including the ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of ∼204, the transmittance of UVA (TUVA) of ∼0.0574%, and the transmittance of UVB (TUVB) ∼0.107%. Furthermore, under solar lighting for 25 min, most surface contamination can be degraded, and the decreased power output would be recovered. Owing to the coupled effects of TiO2 NPs and Ag NWs, the TENG shows excellent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Due to the micro-to-nano hierarchical porous structure, the all-nanofiber-based TENG can serve as self-powered pedometers for detecting and tracking human motion behaviors. As a multifunctional self-powered device, the TENG prompts various applications in the fields of micro/nanopower sources, human movement monitoring, and human–machine interfaces, potentially providing an alternative energy solution and a multifunctional interactive platform for the next-generation wearable electronics.

MXene/Polylactic Acid Fabric-Based Resonant Cavity for Realizing Simultaneous High-Performance Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Shielding and Efficient Energy Harvesting

Ziran Du,Gaoyan Zhang,Kun Chen,Cheng Zhou,Xiaoshuai Zhu,Yuxiang Zhang,Kang Chen,Hao-Yang Mi,Yaming Wang,Chuntai Liu,Changyu Shen

Proliferation in telecommunications and integrated/intelligent devices entails an intense concern for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and versatility. It remains an activated passion to launch infusive EMI shielding materials integrated with self-powered peculiarities. Herein, a double-layered MXene/polylactic acid (PLA) fabric resonance cavity (D-MPF-RC) comprised of two MXene/PLA fabrics (MPFs) with alternating MXene and PLA structures that are separated by a poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) frame is developed. The D-MPF-RC achieved 48.5 and 74.8% improvement in SET and SEA, and 24.6% reduction in SER by introducing the double-layered structure and increasing the resonance cavity (RC) distance without varying the material composition and cost. A high shielding efficiency (SE) of 92.3 dB was obtained at an RC distance of 6 mm owing to the synergetic effects of multiple reflections and destructive EM wave interference. The tribopolarity difference between PLA and MXene and the RC structure made the D-MPF-RC a readily available triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) that could convert mechanical energy into electricity. The D-MPF-RC TENG demonstrated an open-circuit voltage of 88 V and achieved a peak power density of 35.4 mW m–2 on a 6.6 MΩ external resistor, which made it possible to charge capacitors and serve as a self-powered tactile sensor. This report offers new insights into the design of high-performance EMI shielding shields with a resonance cavity and proposes a feasible pathway to integrate them with energy harvesting capabilities.

Electron trapping & blocking effect enabled by MXene/TiO2 intermediate layer for charge regulation of triboelectric nanogenerators

Xiaoping Chen,Yina Liu,Yi Sun,Tianshi Zhao,Chun Zhao,Tawfik A. Khattab,Eng Gee Lim,Xuhui Sun,Zhen Wen

As the existence of interfacial electric field, the surface charges of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) would diffuse into air or tribo-material interior, resulting in the charge decay. Therefore, charge regulation from charge storage is crucial in addition to charge generation. In this work, a MXene/TiO 2 hybrid film has been prepared through partial oxidation of MXene in a contact-separate mode TENG (MT-TENG) as an intermediate layer between negative tribo-material and bottom electrode. It demonstrates the electric outputs of 128 μC/m 2 in charge density, 73.78 μW/cm 3 and 63.78 μW/g in average power density with an energy conversion efficiency of 34.81%. The surface terminals in MXene nanosheets and the oxygen vacancies in TiO 2 nanoparticles provide abundant electron trap sites. Moreover, the energy band bending resulting from the polarization effect of the hybrid film could further hinder the free electrons' drift to the bottom electrode, and consequently prevent the charge recombination. With the synergetic effect of electron storage and polarization, the MT-TENG with an intermediate layer rapidly reaches a charge dynamic equilibrium with a charge density of 80 μC/m 2 . It is expected to provide new insights for material science and structure design from the perspective of charge regulation to improve the output performance of TENGs.

Electromagnetic radiation, as one of the public hazards that injures human health and information safety, shall be shielded from the ambient environment. Here, by the virtue of polypyrrole polymerized polyamide yarns and silicone rubber, a yarn-based electromagnetic shielding-triboelectric nanogenerator (EMS-TENG) equipped with sensing ability is presented, which not only generates electricity from harvesting body motion energy but also serves as EMS to prevent electromagnetic interference. With the aid of knitting method, the developed EMS-TENG fabric exhibits the EMS effectiveness of 32.49 dB in 8.2–12.5 GHz and achieves a maximum instantaneous peak power density of 142.27 µW m −1 . Furthermore, a real-time human-interactive system is developed by adopting the Internet of Things technology and EMS-TENG sensor. Based on the above, a simulated intelligent calculator with multiplication and division function is proposed, which can successfully translate electronic signals to digital numbers. With energy harvesting and self-powered sensing abilities, the EMS-TENG can convert mechanical energy into electrical signals from human movements. Looking forward, the EMS-TENG spurs an innovative technique toward a self-powered human-interactive sensing and functional protective textile for next-generation intelligent wearable applications.

Triboelectric Mechanism of Oil-Solid Interface Adopted for Self-Powered Insulating Oil Condition Monitoring

Song Xiao,Haoying Wu,Nan Li,Xiangyu Tan,Haocheng Deng,Xiaoxing Zhang,Ju Tang,Yi Li

The liquid-solid contact electrification mechanism has been explored in the aqueous solution system, but there are few systematic studies on oil-solid triboelectrification. Herein, an oil droplet triboelectric nanogenerator (Oil-droplet TENG) is designed as the probe to investigate the charge transfer properties at oil-solid interface. The charge transfer kinetics process is disclosed by the electrical signals produced, showing that the electron species initially predominated the oil-solid triboelectrification. The molecular structure and electronic properties of oil also affect triboelectric performance. Further, the charge transfer principle in multi-component liquid mixture during the electric double layer (EDL) development process is proposed to explain the component competition effect. As a proof of concept, a tubular-TENG is designed as a self-powered sensor for transformer oil trace water detection. The device demonstrates high water sensitivity with a detection limit of 10 µL L −1 and a response range of 10–100 µL L −1 . This work not only reveals the oil-solid triboelectric and charge transfer competition mechanism in EDL, but also open up a new channel for real-time online monitoring of trace water in transformer oil, which holds promise for information perception and intelligent operation of transformers in the power industry.

Improved Electrical Output Performance of Cellulose-Based Triboelectric Nanogenerators Enabled by Negative Triboelectric Materials

Feijie Wang,Suyang Wang,Yifan Liu,Tianmeng Hou,Zhen Wu,Jing Qian,Zhicheng Zhao,Liqiang Wang,Chao Jia,Shufeng Ma

Cellulose-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have attracted widespread attention due to the low cost and environmentally friendly characteristics of cellulose. However, achieving high electrical energy output from these generators still presents significant challenges. Here, cellulose is dissolved-regenerated to form a composite aerogel with high specific surface area, in which cellulose-based composites with excellent negative triboelectric properties are developed by coupling the rich 3D network structure of the regenerated cellulose aerogel, modified barium titanate, and poly(vinylidene fluoride). The TENGs assembled from the composite materials exhibit an output voltage of 1040 V and a current of 1.165 mA at an external force of 8 N and a frequency of 4 Hz, outperforming all cellulose-based negative triboelectric materials. In addition, the nanogenerators have a stable electrical energy output capacity, with no significant property degradation in 100 000 contact-separation tests. The excellent electrical output property of the composite materials enables them to harvest energy from human movement and waterdrops, demonstrating their great application prospects in wearable devices, energy harvesting devices, self-powered sensors, and other fields.

Waterproof Triboelectric Nanogenerators Based on Ag Nanoparticle/Chitosan Composites for Transmitting Morse Code

Naijian Hu,Xiucai Wang,Jia Yang,Meng Liu,Jianwen Chen,Xinmei Yu,Wenbo Zhu,Minggao Zhang

Owing to their degradability, environmental friendliness, and low cost, natural polymers have been widely utilized in the fabrication of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). Chitosan is a natural polymer containing long chains of n-acetylamino glucose. However, the low dielectric constant of pure chitosan films affects their electrical properties. Therefore, in this study, to improve their electrical output performance, the dielectric constant of the films was increased by the incorporation of conductive nanoparticles. Highly transparent Ag/Chitosan films were successfully constructed, and the output performance was improved by varying the concentration of Ag nanoparticles (100–200 nm). At a concentration of 6 wt %, the open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, and transferred charge reached 74 V, 4.6 μA, and 23.8 nC, respectively, with a maximum output power of 83 μW. Besides, the fabricated friction-based nanogenerator (AC-TENG) lit 20 blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and successfully drove a commercial calculator, which verified its practical application potential. Finally, the AC-TENG was used to transmit Morse code, successfully sending the signals “HELP” and “SOS”, which might open opportunities in the field of communication application.
