Reverse osmosis (RO) technology has been playing an increasingly important role in radioactive wastewater treatment. In this study, the influence of membrane surface properties on the trace radionuclide (Cs + ) mass transfer process in polyamide RO membrane was investigated. The Cs + mass transfer process was described using the solute permeability coefficient ( B ) with the solution-diffusion with defects (SDWD) model. Several modified RO membranes grafted by different polymers were fabricated to provide different properties, including surface charge, surface roughness and hydrophilicity. The results of correlation analyses demonstrated that B Cs + was independent of both the membrane hydrophilicity and surface roughness. In contrast, there was a significant correlation between B Cs + and the membrane surface charge. The zeta potential exhibited a strong correlation with B Cs + . B Cs + decreased from (7.78 ± 0.70) × 10 −7 to (7.19 ± 2.95) × 10 −9 m/s as the zeta potential increased from −43.57 to 21.2 mV. The results of this study indicated that the membrane surface charge of RO membrane played a key role in the radionuclide mass transfer process. Fabricating positively charged RO membranes could significantly obstruct the radionuclide mass transfer process. The results provided fundamental insights into the mechanisms of the radionuclide mass transfer process in the RO membrane, which emphasized the application prospects of membrane surface modification as a method for the treatment of radioactive wastewater.

The rapid development of the nuclear industry brings benefits for global economic development and solves the energy crisis. However, nuclear industrial activities produce a large amount of radioactive wastewater, which poses serious threats to environmental safety and human health, and 137Cs is considered one of the most abundant radionuclides in radioactive wastewater. In this study, we fabricated a new type of ferric ferrocyanide (Prussian blue, PB) functionalized graphene hydrogel (PB/rGOH) for Cs(I) removal. The as-prepared PB/rGOH shows a three dimensional network with PB nanoparticles uniformly distributed on the surface of the rGO sheets. The PB/rGOH could be readily separated from aqueous solution. Moreover, the volume of the composite could shrink to a small stiff bulk material, further reducing the volume of the waste. Kinetics experiments showed that Cs(I) adsorption on PB/rGOH fitted well with pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the equilibrium data agreed well with the Langmuir model. As calculated from the Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacity at pH 5.0 is 58.82 mg g−1. The increase of pH from 3 to 7 could enhance the adsorption capacity, however, further increasing the pH value resulted in serious decomposition of PB nanoparticles. In conclusion, the PB/rGOH prepared in our work showed good performance on removal of Cs(I) in aqueous solution, and has a good application prospect in radioactive waste water treatment.

Mesoporous ammonium molybdophosphate/SBA-15 (AMP/SBA-15) was considered as an excellent adsorbent to remove Cs + from radioactive wastewater. However, AMP/SBA-15 obtained from two-step method suffers from poor stability and low reuse ability. Herein, we reported a facile one-step method to fabricate AMP/SBA-15 using Phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) as acid media. The effect of PMA content on the properties of the resultant AMP/SBA-15 was investigated in detail. And the Cs + adsorption performance of the developed AMP/SBA-15 adsorbents was also evaluated. It was found that the PMA content had a strong influence on the structure and morphology of AMP/SBA-15. The mesoporous structure order of the AMP/SBA-15 decreased with increasing PMA content. The AMP particles were mainly incorporated into the framework of SBA-15. Furthermore, the AMP incorporation rate obtained from one-step method is much higher than that of two-step method. The developed AMP/SBA-15 with AMP in the framework of SBA-15 exhibited good stability and high reuse ability for the removal of Cs + .

The reduction of soluble U(VI) to insoluble U(IV) precipitates by visible light is an environmentally friendly and highly effective strategy to remove uranium from uranium-containing radioactive wastewater . Herein, a porous hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) of UPC-H4a was self-assembled by intermolecular hydrogen bonds of 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-(2,4-diaminotriazine)phenyl) porphyrin to remove U(VI) from aqueous solution. UPC-H4a has high crystallinity with permanent porosity, excellent photocatalytic property, good chemical stability, and strong photocatalytic reducibility. The experiments showed that UPC-H4a removed 98.18% of U(VI) after illumination for 120 min, with high selectivity , strong ion interference resistance, and good reusability. A real low-level radioactive wastewater was employed to estimate the potential of UPC-H4a for practical application and its removal rate can reach 66.14% in the presence of redox competing metal ions , exhibiting great potential for practical application. The DFT calculations and EPR spectra revealed that a more negative electrostatic potential of DAT-porphyrin and the formed intermolecular hydrogen bonds in UPC-H4a can facilitate the participation of photogenerated electrons in the O 2 /∙O 2 – reaction, and the radical of ∙O 2 – was proved to be the critical participant in U(VI) photoreduction . The discovery of UPC-H4a in this work will help to develop more potential applications of HOFs as photocatalysts in radioactive wastewater treatment .

High-efficiency capture of 99 TcO 4 − from radioactive wastewater and natural aqueous environment is urgently in demand. In this study, nonporous cationic polymeric networks (CPN-n) were employed as the building units to construct the cationic porous aromatic frameworks (iPAF-10) through a molecular expansion strategy. This process was simple and efficient, in which iPAF-10 with fast mass transfer channels and high adsorption site utilization was achieved. In addition, this strategy could also improve the materials’ stability in highly acidic and alkaline conditions. Remarkably, compared with CPN-n, iPAF-10 exhibited rapid kinetics (3 min) and a high adsorption capacity of 1287 mg g −1 toward ReO 4 − (a safe alternative to 99 TcO 4 − ), ranking iPAF-10 among the top in existing advanced 99 TcO 4 − /ReO 4 − adsorbents. iPAF-10 also maintained the stable removal of ReO 4 − from excess competition anions (NO 3 − and SO 4 2− ), high acid/alkali (1 M HNO 3 and 2 M NaOH) and radiation condition (200 kGy). As a result, iPAF-10 showed satisfying ReO 4 − elimination performance from simulated Hanford and Savannah River Site waste streams. The anion exchange mechanism during adsorption and desorption processes was clearly elucidated through experimental and computational analysis. This work demonstrated the synthesis of new cationic porous aromatic frameworks, which showed great potential for 99 TcO 4 − /ReO 4 − removal from wastewater.

Uranium extraction from seawater and the treatment of radioactive wastewater has traditionally been a hot topic. Herein, p(VPA-AM) n solid hydrogels with high uranium extraction properties based on vinylphosphonic acid (VPA) were successfully prepared by one-step copolymerization for the first time. The batch adsorption experiments demonstrated that p(VPA-AM) n has strong uranium chelating ability, fast uranium adsorption kinetics (within 200 min) and high uranium adsorption capacity (644.67 mg/g), and its adsorption behavior conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model, which is a spontaneous heat-absorbing chemical monolayer adsorption process. After 15 adsorption–desorption tests, the adsorption capacity was kept above 96 % of the original capacity, and the uranium extracted from the salt lake water achieved at 3.56 mg/g, which showed superb behavior in treating complex uranium systems. Mechanism studies revealed that the strong interaction between UO 2 2 + and −PO 4 3- dominated the adsorption and the robust complexation might have led to the electron transfer in the structure. The maximum uranium removal rate of p(VPA-AM) n in simulated seawater reached 90 %, and the simple in situ zinc oxide-modified p(VPA-AM) n hydrogel showed good anti-biosludge properties against three common bacteria ( E. coli , B. subtilis and S. aureus ), which has a great potential for application in seawater uranium extraction and uranium wastewater treatment.

It is of great significance to develop an adsorbent with high adsorption capacity and excellent resistance to anion and cation interference toward the removal of U(VI). Herein, a novel polyamine-modified polyacrylonitrile-based fiber (PAN PA ) has been synthesized through hydrothermal method , which can validly remove U(VI) from solution. Combined with mesoscopic, spectral characterization and simulation method, the removal behavior and mechanism of U(VI) from high fluorine uranium-containing wastewater by PAN PA are systematically investigated. The results show that, based on the strong coordination principle of polyamine group and UO 2 2+ , PAN PA can selectively remove U(VI) from wastewater. In addition, the q max of 459.27 mg g −1 was more than that of many other adsorbent materials . More importantly, PAN PA is not affected by high concentration of F − , and exhibits higher distribution coefficient (559,900 mL g −1 ) and removal efficiency (99.5%) to U(VI) than other coexisting ions in real wastewater . Furthermore, the column experiment was also implemented to remove U(VI). The results indicate that PAN PA is a promising material to effectively remove U(VI) from real wastewater produced during the fabrication of nuclear fuel elements .

Magnetic Prussian blue/Fe3O4 core/shell nanoparticles were successfully fabricated via a facile one-pot method. The results of transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR) reveal that the as-prepared products are 20–40 nm in diameter and have obvious core/shell structures, which consist of face-centered-cubic lattice Prussian blue and Fe3O4. They can be well dispersed in water and show obvious magnetism, which means they can be rapidly separated by a magnet. The results of adsorption experiments indicate that their maximal adsorption capacities for Cs+ are 145.8 and 132.6 mg g−1, respectively. After magnetic separation, the Cs+ removal efficiency remains at more than 90% when the Cs+ concentration in solution is 50 μg mL−1. The magnetization and Cs+ adsorption properties can be easily adjusted by changing the content of Fe3O4 in nanocomposites. The synthesis strategy and mechanism are also generally discussed. The resulting magnetic Prussian blue nanoparticles can be widely applied to treat radioactive waste water containing cesium ions.

The treatment of radioactive wastewater is crucial to ensure the safe and rapid development of nuclear energy. However, efficient disposal of uranium wastewater containing high concentrations of fluoride ions (F − ) generated during uranium enrichment and conversion poses a formidable and pressing challenge. In this study, we successfully synthesized MXene/PAO hydrogel beads (MPH beads) by self-assembling two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets with amidoxime through ionic cross-linking. MPH beads exhibited exceptional uranium adsorption capacity (625 mg/g), remarkable adsorption selectivity , and good reusability. Notably, MPH beads demonstrated a maximum uranium adsorption capacity of 400 mg/g in an aqueous solution containing 8000 ppm F − . Furthermore, MPH beads showed favorable F − resistance and were able to remove>95% of U(Ⅵ) even after being immersed in an extreme environment for 15 days. Additionally, MPH beads achieved a high U(Ⅵ) recovery of 98.2% from real environment water samples using dynamic column experiments, showcasing their excellent application performance. The efficient U(Ⅵ) adsorption and anti-fluoride effect were mainly attributed to the combined complexation between the C(NH 2 ) = N-OH, C-Ti-OH groups and U(Ⅵ), as demonstrated by experiments, characterization, and DFT calculations. Our study highlights the significant potential of MPH beads in the treatment of uranium from radioactive wastewater , especially wastewater with high concentrations of F − .

Both environment and human beings were menaced by the widespread application of radioactive uranium, high-performance and effective elimination of uranium from wastewater is of important meaning for development of environmental sustainability in the future. In this study, the water-stable MOF material and the highly crystalline COF were compounded by a mild hydrothermal strategy, which achieved efficient removal of U(VI) through the synergistic effect. The composites showed the characteristics of both COFs and MOFs, which will possess higher stability, larger surface area and faster adsorption efficiency that cannot be carried out by a single component. Batch experiments and characterizations (SEM, TEM, XRD, FT-IR, BET, XPS, etc.) indicated that UiO-66-NH 2 @LZU1 had more stable and multi-layer pore structure and rich active functional groups. The Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetics fitting was more suitable for the U(VI) elimination process. The greatest uranium adsorbing capacity of UiO-66-NH 2 @LZU1 (180.4 mg g −1 ) was observed to exceed the UiO-66-NH 2 (108.8 mg g −1 ) and COF-LZU1 (65.8 mg g −1 ), which reached the excellent hybrid effects. Furthermore, FT-IR and XPS analyses confirmed that the most nitrogen-containing group from COF-LZU1 and oxygen-containing group of UiO-66-NH 2 could be combined with U(VI). In addition, electrostatic interaction was also a mechanism during the removal process. This work displayed that UiO-66-NH 2 @LZU1 was a prospective hybrid material for radioactive waste remediation. The compound method and application mentioned in this work had provided a theoretical basis for designing and developing multi-functional composite adsorbents, which contributed to the development of new materials for radioactive wastewater treatment technologies.

Self-propelled micro/nanomotors have attracted great attention for environmental remediation, however, their use for radioactive waste detection and removal has not been addressed. Engineered micromotors that are able to combine fast detection and highly adsorptive capability are promising tools for radioactive waste management but remain challenging. Herein, we design self-propelled micromotors based on zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF-8)-hydrogel composites via inverse emulsion polymerization and show their potential for efficient uranium detection and removal. The incorporation of magnetic ferroferric oxide nanoparticles enables the magnetic recycling and actuation of the single micromotors as well as formation of swarms of worm-like or tank-treading structure. Benefited from the enhanced motion, the micromotors show fast and high-capacity uranium adsorption (747.3 mg g −1 ), as well as fast uranium detection based on fluorescence quenching. DFT calculation confirms the strong binding between carboxyl groups and uranyl ions. The combination of poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) with ZIF-8 greatly enhances the fluorescence of the micromotor, facilitating the high-resolution fluorescence detection. A low detection limit of 250 ppb is reached by the micromotors. Such self-propelled micromotors provide a new strategy for the design of smart materials in remediation of radioactive wastewater.

Cesium-137 (Cs(I)) is highly hazardous in low-level wastewater and is a major problem in low-level nuclear wastewater. Its effective removal from contaminated wastewater is crucial to ensuring environmental safety and public health. In this study, cesium ion-imprinted composite membranes (I-DBC) were developed for selective separation of Cs(I) using dopamine modification and ion-imprinting techniques. Bacterial cellulose (BC) was used as a carrier in the membrane matrix, and the adsorption capacity of the material was greatly improved after hydrophilic dopamine mimetic bonding and ion blotting techniques. Rapid and highly selective adsorption of cesium ions from low concentration nuclear energy wastewater was realized. The researchers conducted both static and dynamic adsorption experiments on Cs(I) to evaluate the performance of the I-DBC composite membranes. The results showed that the I-DBC composite membrane was more compatible with the Langmuir model and adsorbed Cs(I) mainly by chemical monolayer adsorption, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 50.016 mg g–1 under optimal conditions. In low concentration wastewater, the maximum adsorption capacity of the I-DBC was 4.093 mg g–1. Furthermore, during dynamic permeation experiments, the breakthrough point of the I-DBC was approximately 20 min. The membrane demonstrated good flux properties, which underscores its potential for practical application in the treatment of nuclear wastewater. The findings suggest that the I-DBC composite membrane holds promising prospects for the efficient removal of cesium ions from contaminated water, contributing to safer and more effective nuclear wastewater management.
