Catalytic Conversion of Cassava Residues to Ethylene Glycol Via a One-Pot Hydrothermal Reaction

Zhang Kai,Wu Shubin,Yang He,Li Gang

Cassava residue was proposed as a raw material for the production of ethylene glycol (EG) via a one-pot hydrothermal reaction in the present study. Various mixed catalysts consisting of activated carbon supported Ru (Ru/AC) and a tungsten species were used for the conversion of cassava residues, and the effects of various reaction conditions on the catalytic performance were investigated. When the reaction was carried out at 245 °C for 60 min, the Ru/AC–H 2 WO 4 mixed catalyst showed a EG yield of 53.1 % with a total polyols yield of 80 %, which was confirmed to be the most active among the prepared catalysts. The excellent catalytic performance using cassava residue as the feedstock mainly resulted from a high content of carbohydrates and a low amount of lignin in cassava residues. Furthermore, the Ru/AC–H 2 WO 4 catalyst also showed reasonable stability during the hydrothermal conversion of cassava residues for EG production.

Preparation and Physico-Chemical Characterization of OSA-Modified Starches from Different Botanical Origins and Study on the Properties of Pickering Emulsions Stabilized by These Starches

Fengchao Zhou,Mingyang Dong,Jianhui Huang,Guorong Lin,Jie Liang,Shibin Deng,Chenqi Gu,Qingyu Yang

Native starch (NS) from different botanical origins (native rice/tapioca/oat starch, NRS/NTS/NOS) were hydrophobically modified by octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA), and the octenyl succinic (OS) groups were successfully introduced in the starch molecules which obtained OS-starch (OSRS, OSTS and OSOS) with different levels of modification (0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5%, 3.0%) and degree of substitution (DS). The structural properties of the OS-starch, such as granule size, crystal, wettability and morphology were studied, and the OS-starch was used as particulate stabilizers to produce oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsions. The emulsion index, droplet size distribution and microstructures of Pickering emulsions produced by different OS-starches were compared. OSA modification had almost no effect on the morphology or crystal structure types of three kinds of NS and OS-starch but markedly increased the contact angle and particle size distribution of OSRS, OSTS and OSOS. Esterification reaction of OSA and starch mainly occurred in amorphous regions of starch, and the OSA significantly improved the emulsifying capacity of OSRS, OSTS and OSOS granules and thus stabilized emulsions formed at higher levels (2.5% and 3.0%) of modification of OS-Starch exhibited better stability; the ability of OS-starch to stabilize Pickering emulsion was 3.0% OSRS > 3.0% OSOS > 3.0% OSTS, respectively. Observation and structural properties analysis of OS-starch granules and Pickering emulsion droplets showed that the number and thickness of the starch granules on the oil-water interface of the emulsion droplets increased with improvement of the OSA modification level, and an aggregation state was formed between the OS-starch granules, which was also enhanced with the OSA modification levels. These were all necessary for the Pickering emulsion stabilized by starch granules to remain in a steady state. Keywords:rice starch;tapioca starch;oat starch;Pickering emulsions;OSA;stability

Insight into how E-beam pretreatment promotes sodium hypochlorite oxidation for structure–property improvement of cassava starch: A molecular-level modulation mechanism

Wei Liang,Jiayu Zheng,Xinyue Liu,Wenqing Zhao,Qian Lin,Temirlan Khamiddolov,Jie Zeng,Haiyan Gao,Wenhao Li

To investigate the role of E-beam treatment on the structure-properties of oxidized starch, this study investigated the influence of E-beam (1, 3, 6 kGy) pretreatment combined with NaClO oxidation (1% and 3%) on the multi-scale structural, physicochemical, and digestive properties of cassava starch. Results showed that E-beam treatment did not affect the starch surface, but the oxidative modification increased granule surface roughness. Also, the synergistic modification preserved starch growth rings, FT-IR patterns and crystal types. Further investigations revealed that E-beam induced starch molecular degradation, leading to decreased molecular weight, depolymerization of long chains, and a loss of short-range order. Moreover, oxidation treatment exacerbated the disruption in starch molecular structure, as evidenced by crystallinity loss, viscosity, and enthalpy reduction. Notably, E-beam induces starch yellowing; however, oxidative modification increases starch whiteness. Additionally, the synergistic modification improved native starch's lower solubility and enhanced the resistant starch content. Results suggest that E-beam pretreatment can enhance oxidative modification by promoting the exposure of active sites of starch molecules without destroying starch structure and can be considered an advanced, green, and efficient pretreatment for modified starch in the future.

An optimization method for measuring the stomata in cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) under multiple abiotic stresses

Muqing Ma,Jinbao Gu,Zhen-Yu Wang

As a gateway for gas exchange, pores regulate the transport of air and water in carbon assimilation, respiration, and transpiration to quickly adapt to environmental changes. Therefore, the study of stomatal movement characteristics of plants is helpful to strengthen the understanding of the mechanism of plant response to multi-environmental stress, and can improve the function of plant resistance to stresses. The stomatal movement of Arabidopsis leaves was observed by staining the stomata with rhodamine 6G, but this method has not been reported in other plant leaf stomata studies. Taking cassava as an example, the correlation between cassava stomatal movement and cassava response to stress was observed by using and improving the staining method. Rhodamine 6G is a biological stain widely used in cell biology and molecular biology. It was found that 1 μM rhodamine 6G could stain the stomata of cassava without affecting stomatal movement ( n = 109, p < 0.05). In addition, we proposed that stomata fixed with 4% concentration of formaldehyde after staining were closest to the stomatal morphology of cassava epidermis, so as to observe stomatal movement under different environmental stresses more accurately. Previous methods of measuring stomatal pore size by autofluorescence of cell wall needs to fix the cells for 6 h, but Rhodamine staining can only be observed in 2 min, which greatly improves the experimental efficiency. Compared with the traditional exfoliation method (e.g., Arabidopsis ), this method can reduce the damage of the leaves and observe the stomata of the whole leaves more completely, so that the experimental results are more complete. In addition, the method enables continuous leaf processing and observation. Using this method, we further compared four different cassava varieties (i.e., KU50, SC16, SC8, and SC205) and found that there are differences in stomatal density (SD) among cassava varieties, and the difference in the SD directly affects the stress resistance of cassava ( n = 107, p < 0.001). This finding has important implications for studying the mechanism of plant response to environmental stress through stomata.

Cassava Starch–Based Copolymer Gel with Surfactant: A Sustainable, High-Performance Solution for Environmentally Friendly Coal-Dust Suppression in Industrial Mining

Felicie Mwabaima Ilele,Wen Nie,Stephen Nyabire Akanyange,Tian Qifan,Bao Qiu,Fei Liu

In the industrial mining environment, coal dust pollution has been a persistent issue, causing harm to both human health and the ecosystem. Starch–based polymers have emerged as promising solutions for dust suppression in mines. These polymers not only effectively control dust dispersion but also offer environmental benefits. Derived from natural sources and biodegradable, starch–based polymers align with sustainability concerns in resource extraction industries. Their ability to bond with coal dust particles improves air quality and safety for workers and communities. Sustainable practices are essential to mitigate the environmental and health impacts of coal mining despite its importance in global energy production. The thesis research focused on creating an environmentally friendly dust suppressant gel, CSS-g-AA-AEO 0.04%, to tackle the ongoing problem of coal dust pollution in mining environments. The researchers combined cassava starch with acrylic acid using graft copolymerization techniques to yield the innovative CSS-g-AA gel. Structure tests using x-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy (IR) clearly showed that the grafting process was successful, indicating that the gel was flexible and could be used for various applications. Extensive research efforts, including simulations, precise surface tension measurements, and comprehensive contact angle analyses, led to the identification of a surfactant with exceptional wetting properties, a 0.04% AEO surfactant. scanning electron microscope (SEM) and EDS analyses showed that the dust suppressant had good adhesion and adsorption effects on coal. The water retention capability exhibited an evaporation percentage of 90.94%, whereas wind erosion control achieved a lower dust suppression of 16.2%. This difference is of particular significance, especially under challenging high wind conditions. Incorporating starch solidification within the gel further bolstered its efficacy as a sustainable solution for coal dust suppression, emphasizing its potential as a game-changing approach to combating coal dust pollution while advocating for sustainable mining practices. These groundbreaking findings underscore the immense promise and viability of CSS-g-AA-AEO 0.04% as a cutting-edge, environmentally conscious strategy to mitigate coal dust pollution and promote sustainable mining practices for a cleaner and healthier environment.

Enhancing fermentable sugar yield from cassava residue using a two-step dilute ultra-low acid pretreatment process

Zhuping Yu,Yangliu Du,Xiaona Shang,Ying Zheng,Jinghong Zhou

Cassava residue (CR), a fibrous material, is a cassava processing by-product. The complex structure of the lignocellulosic material in CR limits effective saccharification; therefore, pretreatment is an essential step in biomass fuel production. This study investigated the hydrolysis of CR lignocellulosic components, using amylase to remove the starch from the CR to produce remaining starch-free CR (RSFCR). Ultra-low acid (ULA) CR pretreatments (a one-step ULA using 0.01% w/w H 2 SO 4 or a two-step ULA using 0.05% H 2 SO 4 ) were applied for durations of 0 to 50 min and at temperatures of 160 to 200 °C. The one-step ULA pretreatment achieved maximum glucose, xylose, and total sugar recoveries of 7.57%, 39.11%, and 15.14%, while the two-step ULA pretreatment attained 9.82%, 58.62%, and 22.08% recoveries, respectively. ULA RSFCR pretreatment degraded a small percentage of the hemicellulose sugars into the inhibitors and formed xylose-rich liquid prehydrolysate and a cellulose-rich solid. The hydrolytic yields of glucose, xylose, and total sugar from the two-step ULA pretreatment with enzymatic hydrolysis were 7.43, 1.41, and 3.32 times higher, respectively, than those from the two-step ULA pretreatment and 1.02, 1.13, and 1.04 times higher than those from the one-step ULA pretreatment with enzymatic hydrolysis. Fermentation inhibition was not detected in the pretreatment methods. These results indicate the feasibility of using two-step ULA combined with enzymatic hydrolysis for RSFCR pretreatment.

Study on the performance of flame-retardant esterified starch-modified cassava dregs-PBS composites

Xiaopeng Yue,Jian Li,Pengjie Liu,Yicun Lin,Xin Du

Esterified starch was used as an interfacial modifier to treat the surface of cassava dregs. The treated fiber was used to prepare flame-retardant poly(butylene succinate) (PBS)/cassava dregs fiber composites with the incorporation of intumescent flame retardants (IFR). The mechanical performance and flame-retardant properties of composites were investigated. Experimental data showed that an appropriate cassava fiber loading favored the mechanical performance of composites. When the total filler content was 30 wt % [ m (cassava dregs): m (IFR) = 1:5], in comparison with those of composite prepared by 30 wt % IFR, the tensile and impact strengths of composite increased by 40 ± 7 and 62 ± 8%, respectively. Besides, the limited oxygen index value of 37.3% and UL-94 V0 rate of composite could be achieved. Possible flame retardant mechanism was proposed. The combusted residue of incorporated cassava dregs could play a support effect in the three-dimensional charred layer formed by the combustion products of IFR and PBS. The three-dimensional intumescent charred layer, and the formation of incombustible gas, such as NH3, play an important role in insulation, oxygen barrier, thereby effectively improving the flame retardancy and thermal stability of composites. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Efficient production of ε-poly-l-lysine using cassava starch and fish meal by Streptomyces albulus FQC-24

Yi Zhang,Jing Bai,Chenqi Wu,Yue Wang,Xin Ju,Xin Qi,Liangzhi Li,Lilian Ji,Jiaolong Fu

ε-Poly-l-lysine (ε-PL) is used as a natural food preservative which consists of l-lysine units connected. However, due to the expensive culture medium, the production cost of ε-PL remains high. In this study, cheap raw materials cassava starch (CS) and fish meal (FM) were employed by S. albulus FQC-24 for ε-PL production. In the single factor experiment, the maximum ε-PL production reached 0.97 g/L at 60 g/L CS and 15 g/L FM. The results of screening experiments by Plackett–Burman design showed that three main components affecting ε-PL production were CS, FM, and (NH4)2SO4. And the standardized effects of CS, FM, and (NH4)2SO4 were 0.13, −0.22, and −0.2, respectively. The optimum fermentation medium developed by response surface methodology for ε-PL production contained (g/L) CS, 67.56; FM, 14.70 and (NH4)2SO4, 5.41. Under the optimum conditions, the ε-PL production was achieved 1.30 g/L, with 34.02% higher than that before optimization. Moreover, ε-PL productions of batch and fed-batch fermentation in a 7-L fermentor were improved to 2.13 and 17.17 g/L respectively, which increased by 0.64 and 12.2 times compared with the shake flask culture. The results indicated that FM and CS are promising substrates for the efficient production of ε-PL.

Physicochemical Properties of Cassava Starch-Konjac Glucomannan Composites

Yawei Liu,Bing Xu,Fei An,Jie Liu

Cross-linked cassava starch-konjac glucomannan composite (CCS-KGM), native cassava starch-sodium trimetaphosphate-konjac glucomannan composite (NCS-STMP-KGM), and cross-linked cassava starch-sodium trimetaphosphate-konjac glucomannan composite (CCS-STMP-KGM) are prepared to study the effect of STMP and KGM on the native cassava starch and cross-linked cassava starch. A small amount of KGM adheres to the surface of cassava starch granules in the three composites. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicate that cross-links form in the cross-linked cassava starch and three composites. The X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the crystallization type of native cassava starch modified by STMP and KGM remains unchanged (A-type). The mean particle size of cross-linked cassava starch and the three composites are larger than that of native cassava starch. STMP and KGM decrease the swelling power and water loss rate of native cassava starch. Dynamic rheological results suggest that STMP and KGM increase storage modulus and loss modulus of native cassava starch gel. It provides the possibility for both STMP and KGM to improve the gel properties of native cassava starch rather than cross-linked reaction, and also expands the application field of KGM with low cost.

Morphology and properties of polybutylene succinic and cassava starch blend: Effect of esterification catalysts on graft copolymer formation

Vu Minh Duc,Nguyen Chau Giang

The purpose of this research is to produce of esterified thermoplastic starch (ETPS) for reactive extrusion melt-blending with polybutylene succinate (PBS) in film blowing application. Esterification TPS named M-TPS and T-TPS were prepared from cassava starch, glycerol (plasticizer), and maleic anhydride (MA), tartaric acid (TA) as reactive compatibilizers in a twin extruder, respectively. FTIR results showed that esterification reactions were successfully formed between both MA and TA with cassava starch. The esterified TPSs was then melt blended with PBS in the presence of four kinds of esterification catalysts. The effect of compatibilizer contents on the blend properties was studied in terms of tensile properties, melt flow index (MFI), and electron scanning microscopy (SEM). The results show that TA induced better compatibilization effect than MA did, as evidenced by the PBS/T-TPS blend possessing higher strength than these of PBS/M-TPS, although SEM images showed structural morphology of both blends is similar. The effect of the esterification catalyst type and contents on properties of the PBS/T-TPS blend was also studied. The results from the Molau test confirmed the formation of graft-copolymer (PBSgT-TPS) at the interface of two phases of the blend when compatibilizers were added in the presence of an organotin compound catalyst.

A study on cassava tolerance to and growth responses under salt stress

Yan-E Cheng,Ming-You Dong,Xian-Wei Fan,Li-Li Nong,You-Zhi Li

Soil salinity, commonly dominated by NaCl, is a major constraint to the production of food crops. Cassava ( Manihot esculenta ) is the most important tropical starch-producing crop. Reportedly, this crop is moderately sensitive to salt stress, and the A20/AN1-type zinc finger genes can confer abiotic stress tolerance to plants as the emerging target genes. However, neither cassava tolerance to salt nor the response of A20/AN1-type zinc finger genes from cassava to salt has yet to be characterized in detail. South China 124 (SC124), Fuxuan 01, South China 205, Kasetsart 50 and Argentina 7 (C4), somewhat differ in salt tolerance and starch content in storage roots under pre-established NaCl concentrations of 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 100, and 200 mM. In this study, we investigated responses of in vitro-grown plantlets of these five cultivars, focusing on plantlet growth, phytohormones, antioxidant enzymes, soluble protein and sugar, H 2 O 2 content, and expression of A20/AN1-type zinc finger genes. The major results were as follows: the growth of cassava was obviously inhibited, starting at 20 mM NaCl depending on the cultivars. All five cultivars could not grow at 100 mM NaCl; 10 mM NaCl caused promoted growth by increasing number, volume, surface area, viability, length of fibrous rootlets, and elongated root cells; 20 mM NaCl facilitated both accumulation of total starch in fibrous rootlets and increase in total protein content in shoots; increased growth and starch accumulation did not correlate with phytohormone levels, antioxidant enzyme activities between shoots and rootlets, or, consequently, in the whole plantlets; and the A20/AN1 gene family was composed of at least 11 members and their expression was induced or suppressed in rootlets of plantlets of pot-grown SC124 under 200 mM NaCl, depending on gene members. In conclusion, low salt (NaCl) can not only promote the cassava growth but also lead to accumulation of total starch in the fibrous rootlets and increase in total protein content in shoots instead of rootlets. Low salt promoting growth effects are likely associated with lower levels of abscisic acid and higher levels of gibberellin and indole-3-acetic acid under salt stress. Such antagonistic relationship among these three phytohormones maybe involves expression of A20/AN1 genes under salt stress. The demand for H 2 O 2 levels, osmoprotectants, and antioxidant enzyme activities in salt stress responses is cassava cultivar-dependent.

Graft copolymerization for developing high-adhesion starch-based wood adhesives for environmentally friendly plywood

Zhi Li,Haipeng Cai,Antonio Pizzi,Xianghong Li,Jun Zhang,Guanben Du,Yun Lu,Shuduan Deng

Cost-effective and sustainable biomass-based materials are being explored as alternatives to formaldehyde-based adhesives. However, the direct application of pure biomass materials for bonding purposes does not yield satisfactory results. Graft copolymerization is a widely recognized method for chemical modification. In this study, a novel formaldehyde-free wood adhesive was synthesized through graft copolymerization using N -methylolacrylamide (NMA) and cassava starch (CS). The physical and chemical properties, reaction mechanisms, and bonding mechanisms of the adhesive were thoroughly investigated. Characterization techniques such as FTIR, NMR, XPS, and SEM confirmed significant improvements in the properties of the graft copolymer adhesive, attributed to increased crosslinking density and the formation of highly interconnected structures. The cured adhesive demonstrated exceptional plywood bonding performance and water resistance, with shear strengths of 1.31 MPa (dry strength), 1.01 MPa (cold water strength), and 0.91 MPa (hot water strength), representing a substantial improvement over pure CS adhesive. This straightforward and economically viable strategy offers a promising avenue for developing biomass formaldehyde-free adhesives and promoting advancements in the wood industry.
