Ceramic membranes with tailored surface wettability have gained increasing attention for improving their separation efficiency and antifouling ability, while most of the previous work focused on the underwater oleophobic behavior. In this work, in-air highly oleophobic and hydrophilic SiC membranes were achieved through the UV irradiation triggered polymerization and controlled crosslinking between oleophobic perfluorodecyl acrylate (TFOA) and hydrophilic methacrylic acid (MAA). These key processing parameters including MAA content, soaking time and irradiation duration were systematically studied through examining the changes in porous microstructure, surface wettability and separation performance in oil-in-water emulsion. Results showed that the flux attenuation rate of SiC membranes can be effectively reduced by regulating the content of hydrophilic components. Due to the alternation of the surface wettability to highly oleophobic in air, the oil droplets can hardly attach on the surface of modified SiC membranes at the beginning of filtration process, and the membrane fouling was significantly slow down yet dominated by the intermediate blocking. Correspondingly, a combined cleaning procedure was proposed to regenerate the fouled SiC membranes. Further, the antifouling ability of modified and original SiC membranes was comparatively studied under the conditions of a fixed permeate volume (15 ml) and various oil concentrations (200 ∼ 1000 ppm) in the separation of oil-in-water emulsion. The advantages of modified SiC membranes become more notable when used for highly concentrated oil–water emulsion as reflected by the slower flux decline and higher stable flux. This work provides a feasible pathway to realize the in-air highly oleophobic and hydrophilic surface on ceramic membranes, and primarily demonstrates the advantages of antifouling ability in oil-in-water emulsion separation.

Global climate change has exacerbated water scarcity, while traditional water treatment technologies are often unsustainable due to high energy consumption and negative environmental impacts, posing an urgent need for a sustainable solution. This study developed a novel wood-based flexible Janus membrane coupled with a spine structure for efficient oil-water emulsion separation and fog harvesting. The Janus wood membrane showed high separation efficiency (> 99.6%), high filtration flux (water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions exceeded 810 L/m²·h and 747 L/m²·h, respectively), and good reusability. Additionally, the introduction of spine and conical pores significantly enhanced fog collection efficiency (19.23 kg/m²·h), expanding the application potential of Janus membranes. Moreover, this Janus wood membrane offered excellent mechanical properties, dimensional stability, mildew resistance, and environmental benefits. This study underscored the potential of Janus membranes in water management and liquid separation, providing a sustainable solution to water scarcity.

Electrospun fiber membranes enable oil–water emulsion separation via tunable morphology and chemistry, yet most face an efficiency–permeability trade-off where enhancing one compromises the other. Herein, optimized membranes (C-NFO@GDY) are synthesized with a uniform honeycomb nanostructure of graphdiyne (GDY) on flexible coal-based preoxidized fibers (C-NFO) through the Glaser‒Hay coupling reaction. The honeycomb nanostructure of GDY effectively disperses external stress on the C-NFO fibers, increasing the tensile strength from 2.8 to 3.2 MPa. In addition, the nanostructure enhances hydration layer formation kinetics, achieving superhydrophilicity (0°) and underwater superoleophobicity (> 150°) of the membrane. When tested against three surfactant-stabilized emulsions (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate (Tween 80)), the membranes demonstrated separation fluxes of 2936 L/(m 2 h), 2149 L/(m 2 h), and 1855 L/(m 2 h), and the corresponding separation efficiencies were 99.6%, 96.6%, and 93.1%. For CTAB-stabilized emulsions, the C-NFO@GDY membrane (zeta potential: − 65.2 mV) exhibits strong electrostatic attraction with cationic surfactants, achieving a high flux of 2936 L/(m 2 h) and a separation efficiency of 99.6%, surpassing those of recently reported MXene and PANI composites under identical conditions. Overall, the synergy between honeycomb nanostructure and electronegativity of GDY overcomes the flux–efficiency trade-off, offering new ideas for the preparation of oil–water separation membranes. Emulsified oily wastewater threated to human health seriously, and traditional technologies are unable to separate the emulsion for the small size of oil droplets. Membranes with special wettability are considered as an efficient way for oil/water emulsions separation, but challenges remain in terms of high material costs, complex processing, and easy to be fouled. Herein, novel self-cleanable membranes composed of nanocellulose and TiO 2 nanoparticles were developed through a facile and sustainable vacuum-assisted filtration process. TiO 2 nanoparticles in situ generated on the surface of tunicate cellulose nanocrystals (TCNC), a kind of nanocellulose, by hydrolysis of titanium oxysulfate. The prepared nanocomposite membrane showed hierarchical architecture, high roughness, superhydrophilicity and underwater oleophobicity. After UV-light irradiation, the resulting membrane exhibited improved underwater oil contact angles and water fluxes, beneficial for the selective oil/water emulsions separation. Importantly, the TiO 2 /nanocellulose membrane could rapidly degrade contaminant (oleic acid) under UV-light irradiation, suggesting excellent self-cleaning property. This works provided a facile strategy for development of self-cleanable membrane from nanocellulose for oil/water emulsion separation.

Multifunctional separation membrane is usually realized by multi-component collaborative construction, which makes the membrane preparation method complicated and uncontrollable. Herein, a novel multifunctional photocatalytic separation membrane is prepared by vacuum self-assembly of single seaweed-like g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst. The seaweed-like g-C 3 N 4 gives membrane certain roughness, large specific surface area, excellent hydrophilicity and abundant transport channels. Through a systematic study, the membrane exhibits excellent separation of five oil-in-water emulsions with a maximum flux of 3114.0 ± 113.0 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 for 1, 2-dichloroethane-in-water (Dc/W) emulsion and a maximum efficiency of 97.4 ± 0.1% for chloroform-in-water (C/W) emulsion. In addition, the seaweed-like g-C 3 N 4 with large specific surface area and narrow bandgap render excellent visible light absorption characteristics and accelerate e − -h + pairs transport rate, giving the membrane excellent photocatalytic degradation and antibacterial properties. The membrane shows good degradation for eight different pollutants, among which the degradation effect for rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue (MB), and crystal violet (CV) were ≈100%. The antibacterial efficiency against E. coli and S. aureus is also close to 100%. After 35 consecutive separations of C/W emulsion and 10 consecutive degradations of RhB, the membrane still maintains excellent separation performance. This long-lasting multifunctional separation membrane exhibits broad application prospects in complex wastewater purification.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes are prepared via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method with cold air as quenching air (PVDF T-air ), and surface-modified by polydopamine. The morphologies, surface chemistry, pore size, porosity, mechanical properties, separation performance in oil/water emulsion separation and antifouling ability of the prepared PVDF membranes were studied in detail. Compared with the PVDF membranes prepared by traditional TIPS method with cold water as quenching bath (PVDF T-water ), the PVDF T-air membranes are not only more environmental friendly and energy saving, but also show ultrahigh permeation flux without sacrificing oil rejections and improve mechanical strength. After being modified by polydopamine, the rich hydrophilic groups in dopamine endow the PVDF T-air membranes with excellent hydrophilic and underwater oleophobicity. The optimal membrane sample (M-3) shows a permeation flux of 3855.6 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 for pure water and the ones above 2600 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 for oil/water emulsions accompanied with above 98.5% oil rejections for three oil/water emulsions (n-hexane, toluene and petroleum ether). The results demonstrate that novel PVDF microfiltration membranes with ultrahigh permeation flux and oil rejection are prepared for oil/water emulsion separations.

Separation and purification of surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water nanoemulsions is a great environmental challenge. Membrane-based separation strategies are more effective over conventional methods in the treatment of nanoemulsion waste water. In this paper, we construct a superhydrophilic membrane by coating a thin photothermal-responsive iron tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (Fe-TCPP) nanofibrous metal organic framework (MOF) selective layer on a macroporous polyethersulfone membrane. The as-prepared membrane exhibits high separation performance of oil-in-water nanoemulsions with permeance of 46.4 L·m–2·h–1·bar–1 and separation efficiency of 99%. It also demonstrates nice anti-oil/ionic-fouling property, good recyclability, and desirable stability. The high separation performance is accredited to the superhydrophilicity, highly charged surface, and nanometer pore sizes of the Fe-TCPP nanofibrous membrane. Due to the unique photothermal property of Fe-TCPP nanofibers, the permeance can be enhanced more than 50% by visible light without deteriorating the rejection. This photo-stimuli MOF-based thin-layer membrane offers great potential for the generation of point-of-use water treatment devices.

The superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic filtration membranes with robust anti-oil-fouling performance have aroused extensive research enthusiasm for oily wastewater treatment. However, it is inevitable that this kind of anti-fouling membrane will be contaminated when facing high-viscosity crude oil. In this work, green tannic acid (TA) was introduced in sodium alginate (SA) nanofibrous membrane (NFM) to form stable TA-Fe(iii) complexes via coordination reaction. Then, a layer of rough β-FeOOH nanoparticles was uniformly constructed on the surface of the nanofiber via in situ mineralization. The obtained SA/TA/β-FeOOH NFM displayed outstanding underwater superoleophobic and anti-crude oil-fouling performance. Moreover, the SA/TA/β-FeOOH NFM exhibited high separation efficiency (99.64%) and flux (1899 ± 251 L m −2 h −1 ) for crude oil-in-water emulsion. In addition, SA/TA/β-FeOOH NFM with fascinating photo-Fenton self-cleaning performance can degrade pollutants adsorbed on the membrane surface. These surprising advantages endow our SA/TA/β-FeOOH NFM have promising prospects in complex oily wastewater treatment.

The development of a practical and efficient separation membrane is significant for the purification of emulsified oily wastewater; however, circumventing certain critical limitations such as low flux, membrane fouling and poor durability remains a challenge. Herein, a self-healing and superwettable electrospun nanofibrous and hydrophilic branched poly(ethylenimine)-poly(acrylic acid)/hyaluronic acid (bPEI-PAA/HA, named PPH) membrane was fabricated by adopting a simple strategy combining electrospinning and layer-by-layer assembly. Layer-by-layer self-assembling polymers greatly increase the strength and toughness of the composite membrane. The PAN@PPH composite membranes possess an uneven bulge microstructure with intriguing superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity as a result of the synergy between the uneven bulge surface and the hydrophilic polymeric matrix. More importantly, the membranes exhibit self-healing properties by repairing damage such as fractures in the presence of water, which significantly enhances their durability and service life in practical applications. This simple but novel and effective membrane system shows promise for large-scale oily wastewater remediation.

This study focuses on the design and fabrication of a superhydrophilic pyramid-shaped porous material using high-precision 3D printing technology for effective oil-in-water emulsion separation. The unique pyramid-shaped structure enhances droplet interception, significantly improving separation efficiency. The material’s surface was modified with a self-polymerized dopamine (DA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) coating, resulting in superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobicity. This porous material achieved a separation flux of 3098 L/m 2 h with a separation purity of 99.3 %. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were employed to visualize the emulsion separation mechanism, providing insights into the dynamic process of droplet behavior within the funnel structure. The material also demonstrated excellent corrosion resistance, maintaining its performance after prolonged exposure to acidic, alkaline, and saline environments. These results suggest that the developed material offers a promising solution for high-efficiency oil–water separation with potential applications in environmental remediation and industrial wastewater treatment.

Surface segregation method, as an in situ method for simultaneous modification of membrane external surfaces and inner pore surfaces, has been more commonly employed to fabricate antifouling membranes. In this study, dopamine (DA) with self-polymerization and bio-adhesion ability is chosen as a surface segregation agent to fabricate antifouling polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane for oil-in-water emulsions separation through synergistically regulating phase inversion, self-polymerization of DA, and surface segregation of poly-dopamine (PDA). During the phase inversion process, DA contacts with an alkaline coagulation bath to trigger self-polymerization of DA, then the surface segregation of PDA proceeds spontaneously. The addition and self-polymerization of DA can regulate the phase inversion process to acquire membranes with high porosity, as a result, the water permeance is increased from 134 to 538 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 with the oil rejection higher than 99.8%. Because the hydrophilic PDA layer on membrane and pore surfaces leads to a robust hydration layer, the membrane exhibits super-oleophobicity underwater and excellent antifouling properties with water recovery ratio of more than 99.4%. This study may open a new route to preparing antifouling membranes by using small molecules as surface segregation agents.

Conventional special wettable membranes for the separation of the surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions primarily rely on the “size-sieving” mechanism, which enhances efficiency by reducing the pore size, leading to a trade-off between separation flux and efficiency. Inspired by spider silk, we developed a novel Janus membrane (JPSPP) capable of high demulsification capacity and constant separation flux. This membrane combines a superhydrophobic PS@PDMS membrane (PPM) with spindle-knotted structures on a negatively charged superhydrophilic PAN@SAS membrane (PSM) through electrospinning. The synergy of electrostatic force generated by charged surfaces, the Laplace pressure created by spindle-knotted geometry, and the wettability gradient resulting from asymmetric wettability enhance the demulsification capacity. The high and constant separation flux was achieved as Laplace pressure drives rapid coalescence of demulsified oil droplets towards the top of the spindle-knotted structures, facilitating oil detachment and efficient water permeation downward. As a result, the JPSPP membrane achieved a separation efficiency exceeding 99.9 %, with a constant separation flux of up to 1952.27 L m −2 h −1 , representing a 3–4 folds improvement compared to the pure PAN membranes (PM). The separation performance of the JPSPP still maintains excellent separation performance with efficiency above 98.3 % and a slight attenuation in flux after twenty filtration cycles. The research proposes groundbreaking solutions that significantly enhance the demulsification efficiency and maintain a constant separation flux for oil/water emulsions, with the potential to profoundly impact multiple industries including food processing, energy production, and the petroleum industry, etc.
