The emerging polysulfide/polyiodide redox flow batteries (PSIBs) attract much attention owing to their high capacity and low cost. However, severe polysulfide/polyiodide crossover and insufficient cycle life caused by membrane swelling impede their large-scale applications. Herein, we constructed a rigid framework-constrained membrane, where rigid carbonylated polymer of intrinsic microporosity (cPIM-1) chains were introduced to bind the movement of the flexible perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) polymer chain. Quartz crystal microbalance and positron annihilation techniques demonstrated optimizing the PFSA/cPIM (P/cPIM) composite membrane structure and channel size. In the PSIB test, the battery with the P/cPIM membrane operated stably for over 780 h, which significantly improved over the 165 h recorded for the PFSA membrane.

A phosphorous-doped graphite felt (PGF) is fabricated and examined as electrode for vanadium flow battery (VFB). P doping improves the electrolyte wettability of GF and induces more defect sites on its surface, resulting in significantly enhanced activity and reversibility towards VO 2+ /VO 2 + and V 2+ /V 3+ couples. VFB with PGF electrode demonstrates outstanding performance such as high-rate capability under 50–400 mA cm −2 , wide-temperature tolerance at −20 °C–60 °C, and excellent durability over 1000 charge–discharge cycles. These merits enable PGF a promising electrode for the next-generation VFB, which can operate at high-power and all-climate conditions.

The actual performance of vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) is still significantly constrained by the slow kinetics and major parasitic reactivity of anode issues. Herein, a B-site management strategy of SrBO 3 ( B = Ti, Zr, Hf) perovskites was proposed to promote the anode reaction jointly explored by experiments and first–principle calculations. As the atomic number of B increases, the enhanced polarity of the B–O bond and the increased oxygen defect can boost the adsorption of vanadium ions, while the weakened orbital hybridization of the B–O bond facilitates the charge transfer of anode reaction. Compared with SrTiO 3 and SrZrO 3 , oversized particles and deformed crystals of SrHfO 3 reduce its catalysis. Of SrBO 3 perovskites, SrZrO 3 stands out in catalysis, owing to its outstanding combination of high hydrophilicity, large surface area, and desired crystal structure. Further, the VRFB using SrZrO 3 presents a superior energy efficiency (EE) of 63.2% at 300 mA cm –2 and an increase of 15% in EE compared with the pristine cell at 200 mA cm –2 . This work lays the foundation for building the connections between the structural and compositional flexibility and the tunable perovskite properties desirable for vanadium redox reactions.

Vanadium flow batteries (VFBs) are attracting increasing attention due to their promising prospect for large-scale energy storage. However, the high cost and low selectivity of current membranes limit their further application. In this work, a highly conductive (1122 mS cm−1) and stable microporous membrane was obtained via oxidizing a dense anion exchange membrane by an in situ or off situ process. Poly[(fluorene alkylene)-co-(biphenyl alkylene)] (PFBA-QA) with pendant quaternary ammonium alkyl groups was designed and prepared. The difference in stability between the main and side chains of the ether-free polymer allows the transformation of ion channels from aggregated ion clusters in the dense membrane to micropores by sacrificing the side chain in a strong oxidative environment. As a result, a VFB assembled with the resulting membrane demonstrates a CE of 97% and an EE of 88% at a current density of 80 mA cm−2, which can stably run for more than 290 cycles. This paper provides a new option for the membrane design in VFBs.

Polypyrrole (PPY) modified porous poly(ether sulfone) (PPY/PES) membranes with excellent ion conductivity and high ion selectivity are prepared and employed in vanadium flow batteries (VFBs). The porous PES membranes are modified through in situ polymerization of pyrrole (PR) by using VO2+ as the oxidizing agent. The positively charged PPY nanoparticles can effectively retain vanadium ions via the Donnan exclusion and afford excellent ion conductivity through the interaction between the sulfuric acid in electrolytes and the nitrogen elements in PPY. As a consequence, the designed PPY/PES porous membranes demonstrate high ion selectivity and excellent ion conductivity along with exceptional chemical stability under VFB operation conditions. The PPY/PES porous membranes exhibited a very prospective performance for vanadium flow applications, showing a coulombic efficiency (CE) of 96.30% and an energy efficiency (EE) of 87.20% at a current density of 80 mA cm−2, which are much better than those of a VFB with a Nafion 115 membrane (coulombic efficiency of 93.16% and energy efficiency of 82.29%). Furthermore, a VFB using the PPY/PES porous membranes delivers a stable battery efficiency after continuously operating for more than 100 cycles, displaying good potential usage in VFB applications.

The iron–chromium flow battery (ICFB), the earliest flow battery, shows promise for large-scale energy storage due to its low cost and inherent safety. However, there is no specific membrane designed that meets the special requirements of ICFBs. To match the harsh operation parameters of ICFBs, we designed and fabricated a composite membrane with high mechanical, chemical, and thermal stability. In the design, a commercial porous polyethylene membrane is selected as the framework material, offering high mechanical stability and reducing the cost. Meanwhile, the Nafion resin is filled in the pores of a porous membrane, which inhibits the transfer of redox-active ions and creates the proton channels via hydrophobic/hydrophilic phase separation. As a result, the composite membrane exhibits high conductivity, selectivity, and stability, especially with almost no swelling at high operating temperatures. Thus, an ICFB with the prepared membrane exhibits a coulombic efficiency of 93.29% at the current density of 80 mA cm−2and runs stably for over 300 cycles. This work provides an easy method to fabricate high-performance and low-cost membranes specifically for ICFBs and has the potential to promote the development of ICFBs.Keywords:iron–chromium flow battery;pore-filling Daramic membrane;ion selectivity;low cost;high stability

All vanadium flow batteries (VFBs) are considered one of the most promising large-scale energy storage technology, but restricts by the high manufacturing cost of V 3.5+ electrolytes using the current electrolysis method. Here, a bifunctional liquid fuel cell is designed and proposed to produce V 3.5+ electrolytes and generate power energy by using formic acid as fuels and V 4+ as oxidants. Compared with the traditional electrolysis method, this method not only does not consume additional electric energy, but also can output electric energy. Therefore, the process cost of producing V 3.5+ electrolytes is reduced by 16.3%. This fuel cell has a maximum power of 0.276 mW cm −2 at an operating current of 1.75 mA cm −2 . Ultraviolet–visible spectrum and potentiometric titration identify the oxidation state of prepared vanadium electrolytes is 3.48 ± 0.06, close to the ideal 3.5. VFBs with prepared V 3.5+ electrolytes deliver similar energy conversion efficiency and superior capacity retention to that with commercial V 3.5+ electrolytes. This work proposes a simple and practical strategy to prepare V 3.5+ electrolytes.

Bromine-based flow batteries (Br-FBs) are emerging rapidly due to their high energy density and wide potential window for renewable energy storage systems. Nevertheless, the sluggish kinetics of the Br2/Br– reaction on the electrode is considered to be the main challenge contributing to the poor performance of Br-FBs. Herein, we report self-assembled blossom-shaped NiCo2S4 nanosheets, enabling in situ growth on graphite felt (GF) via a one-step hydrothermal method. In the prepared NiCo2S4-GF, the gaps formed by the nanosheets restrict bromine diffusion, the sulfuretted blossom-shaped structure provides active sites with bromine adsorption capacity, and the synergistic effect of Ni and Co accelerates the electron transfer rate, which allow the electrode to exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity compared to commercial GF, CoS-GF, and NiS-GF. Moreover, NiCo2S4-GF demonstrates unique selectivity for enhancing the Br2/Br– redox reaction compared to the bimetallic oxide of NiCo2O4-GF. Consequently, the zinc–bromine flow battery (ZBFB) with NiCo2S4-GF achieves an energy efficiency of 80.16%, which is 16.18% higher than that of the battery with commercialized GF at a current density of 60 mA cm–2, as well as a maximum power density of 260.75 mW cm–2 at 280 mA cm–2. The effective enhancement of the performance of ZBFB suggests that NiCo2S4-GF possesses great application potential in Br-FBs.

In the context of the global energy transition, the intermittency and instability of renewable energy have become major bottlenecks limiting its large-scale application. Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs), recognized for their long cycle life, high safety, and environmental benefits, are ideal solutions for large-scale energy storage. The cost and performance of the electrolyte are critical factors determining the efficiency and economic viability of the battery. However, the preparation of vanadium electrolytes faces challenges, including complex production processes and high costs. Thus, developing high-concentration, high-performance, and low-cost vanadium electrolytes while ensuring green production of raw materials is an urgent technical challenge. This study presents a short-process clean method for the production of high-purity VOCl 3 from NaVO 3 extracted from vanadium slag, which is applied to the sulfate-chloride electrolyte system of VRFBs. In this system, VOCl 3 serves as the Cl − source, significantly reducing production costs by eliminating the need for additional HCl. Compared to traditional vanadium raw materials (e.g., V 2 O 5 and VOSO 4 ), the energy efficiency (EE) of the electrolyte is improved by 13.6 %. This research presents an efficient and cost-effective approach for the sustainable production of vanadium electrolytes, providing significant support for the advancement of high-performance and economically viable VRFB technology.

The redox flow battery technology is of great potential for large-scale energy storage. However, its widespread application is suffering from the challenges of low energy efficiency and considerable performance degradation in the high-current cycles. Herein, we propose and develop a phosphorus-doped electrode with stabilized electrochemical interface and hierarchical pore structure for cost-effective flow batteries. Density functional theory calculation was first used to demonstrate the stability and activity of phosphorus-doped graphite surface. On basis of theoretical design, the phosphorus-doped graphite felt electrode was fabricated by a facial thermally treating method. Stabilized heteroatom-doped chemical surface with abundant phosphorus-containing functional groups (1.7%) was observed. Beyond that, the hierarchical pore structure from macro (~20 μm) to nanoscale (<200 nm) was formed synchronously, suggesting the enhanced reaction activity, stability and mass transport. In charge-discharge test, flow battery assembled with phosphorus-doped electrodes yielded a prominent energy efficiency of 81% at 200 mA cm −2 , 46% higher than battery with traditional electrodes. Even current densities up to 500 mA cm −2 , battery with phosphorus-doped electrodes still exhibits a workable energy efficiency of 64% while batteries with other electrodes cannot operate properly. Moreover, the superior durability of battery with phosphorus-doped electrodes was verified after 100-cycle charge-discharge test with nearly no-decay energy efficiencies. This work offers a promising way to develop stable and efficient flow batteries for the energy storage systems.

Advanced charged porous membranes with flexible internal crosslinking networks were designed and fabricated for vanadium flow battery application. Flexible 1,4-diaminobutane was introduced in CMPSF spongy porous membranes to build flexible crosslinking networks on the pore walls. The flexible segments could induce relatively highly micro-phase separated structures (hydrophilic and hydrophobic phase) and effectively enhance the mobility of hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains, which is highly beneficial for proton transportation. At the same time, the positively charged crosslinking networks can ensure the high chemical stability of resulting membranes. As a result, porous membranes with flexible crosslinking networks could meet the requirement of VFB application owing to their excellent conductivity, high selectivity and high chemical stability. A VFB single cell with the prepared charged porous membrane exhibits a coulombic efficiency (CE) of more than 99% and an energy efficiency (EE) of about 87% at 80 mA cm−2, showing much higher performance than commercial Nafion 115 (CE = 92.5%, EE = 83.7%). A VFB employing the prepared membrane maintains a stable performance after more than 4000 charge–discharge cycles, showing impressive potential for VFB application.

The all-aqueous thermally regenerative battery has the advantages of high open-circuit voltage, high power density, and high Coulombic efficiency, providing a promising way for low-temperature waste heat recovery. In this study, a passive membraneless thermally regenerative flow battery driven by capillary force and gravity is proposed to reduce the cost of construction and operation. The feasibility of power generation and the influence of key parameters (height difference, support electrolyte concentration, etc.) on the battery performance are studied. The results showed that a laminar flow induced by a fiber-based microfluidic reactor could effectively separate the catholytes and anolytes, and the battery could achieve long-term power production and obtain a maximum power density of 15.2 mW cm–2. The performance of the battery first increased and then decreased with the inlet height, and the optimal height was 3 mm. This is mainly due to the fact that the inlet height affects the flow rate of the electrolyte, which affects the mass transfer and laminar flow effect in the porous electrode. Within a certain range, as the concentration of the supporting electrolyte increases, the conductivity of the electrolyte is significantly improved, although the flow rate decreases to a certain extent due to the increase in viscosity, resulting in a further improvement in the battery performance. Through the above optimization, the maximum power density of the battery obtained in this study is 24.9 mW cm–2, and the maximum theoretical thermal efficiency can reach 1.26% (the relative Carnot efficiency can reach 10.6%).
