Bromate is a commonly identified carcinogenic and genotoxic disinfection byproduct in water. In the present work, bimetallic Ru-Cu catalyst supported on carbon nanotube (RuCu/CNT) was prepared and the structural properties of the catalysts were characterized. The results show that the presence of Ru enhances the dispersion and reduction of Cu particles in the RuCu/CNT catalyst in comparison with the monometallic Cu catalyst supported on CNT (Cu/CNT). For electrocatalytic reaction on Cu/CNT, bromate is reduced on metallic Cu surface via a redox process. For Ru/CNT, highly active H* radicals are generated on metallic Ru surface via the Volmer process and are used for bromate reduction. As for the RuCu/CNT, bromate is reduced through two main pathways, including direct redox reaction on metallic Cu and indirect reduction by active H* radicals on Ru surface. Accordingly, RuCu/CNT exhibits the highest catalytic activity , ascribed to the synergistic effect between metallic Ru and Cu. Furthermore, the bimetallic catalyst displays much higher catalytic efficiency as compared with previously reported results. The pH, initial bromate concentration, in-situ electrochemical reduction of the electrodes and working potential have strong impacts on the removal efficiency of bromate on RuCu/CNT.

Bicarbonate scavenges OH to form CO 3 − that enhances the bromate formation by ozonation . However, the role of CO 3 − in the bromate formation during ozonation has never been quantitatively investigated. Herein, we establish a quantitative approach for evaluating the role played by CO 3 − based on the detection of CO 3 − -involved bromate and CO 3 − exposure. Experiments demonstrated that the CO 3 − -involved bromate was responsible for 33.7–69.9% of the total bromate formed with bicarbonate concentrations from 0.5 mM to 4 mM. The CO 3 − exposure was two orders of magnitude higher than the corresponding OH exposure during ozonation. These results demonstrate that CO 3 − plays a comparable or even more pronounced role in the oxidation of bromine during bromate formation than OH. A model was developed based on the ratio of bromine oxidized by CO 3 − , which could predict the CO 3 − -involved bromate formation well. Modeled and experimental results illustrated that the contribution of the CO 3 − -involved bromate to the total bromate decreased with increasing pH or initial bromide, but almost remained unchanged at different ozone dosages. Moreover, the presence of humic acid led to an increase in this contribution during ozonation. The results of this study provide a more in-depth understanding of the mechanism of bromate formation during ozonation.

Bromate formation has been found in the SO 4 •− -based oxidation processes, but previous studies primarily focused on the bromate formation in the homogeneous SO 4 •− -based oxidation processes. The kinetics and mechanisms of bromate formation are poorly understood in the heterogeneous SO 4 •− -based oxidation processes, although which have been widely studied in the eliminations of micropollutants. In this work, we found that the presence of CuO, a common heterogeneous catalyst of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), appreciably enhanced the bromate formation from the oxidation of bromide by PMS. The conversion ratio of bromide to bromate achieved over 85% within 10 min in this process. CuO was demonstrated to play a multiple role in the bromate formation: (1) catalyzed PMS to generate SO 4 •− , which then oxidizes bromide to bromate; (2) catalyzed the formed free bromine to disproportionate to bromate; (3) catalyzed the formed free bromine to decomposed back into bromide. In the CuO-PMS-Br system, bromate formation increases with increasing CuO dosages, initial CuO and bromide concentrations, but decreases with increasing bicarbonate concentrations. The presence of NOM (natural organic matter) resulted in a lower formed bromate accompanied with organic bromine formation. Notably, CuO catalyzes PMS to transform more than 70% of initial bromide to bromate even after recycled used for six times. The formation of bromate in the PMS catalysis by CuO system was also confirmed in real water.

The ultraviolet/persulfate (UV/PS) process has attracted more and more attention for water treatment. However, it runs the risk of producing bromate in the presence of bromide ions. In this work, we propose a new strategy using sulfite to inhibit bromate formation. The results show that the addition of sulfite significantly reduced the formed bromate in the UV/PS system by 61.2% and 24.5% in 30 min and 120 min, respectively. Increasing sulfite dosage or pH could enhance bromate control. From the standpoint of reaction kinetics, sulfite is likely to inhibit bromate formation by reducing bromine radicals (Br ) back to bromide ions, the energy profile of which was quantified by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In the UV/PS/sulfite system, the conversion of SO 3 − to HO was observed, indicating that sulfite also served as a source of reactive radicals. Moreover, sulfite apparently promoted the degradation of benzoic acid and phenol in a UV/PS system, showing advantages over other inorganic reductants. As a result, we discovered that sulfite could not only help control bromate formation in UV/PS but also improve the system’s oxidation capacity.

The inhibition of bromate formation is a challenge for the application of ozonation in water treatment due to the carcinogenicity and nephrotoxicity of bromate. In this study, the high-mobility lattice oxygen-rich MnOOH nanorods were synthesized successfully and applied for the bromate inhibition during catalytic ozonation in bromide and organic pollutants-containing wastewater treatment . The catalytic ozonation system using lattice oxygen-rich MnOOH nanorods exhibited an excellent performance in bromate control with an inhibition efficiency of 54.1% compared with the sole ozonation process. Furthermore, with the coexistence of 4-nitrophenol, the catalytic ozonation process using lattice oxygen-rich MnOOH nanorods could inhibit the bromate formation and boost the degradation of 4-nitrophenol simultaneously. Based on the experiments of ozone decomposition , surface manganese inactivation and reactive oxygen species detection, the inhibition of bromate could be attributed to the effective decomposition of ozone with generating more ·O 2 - and the reduction of bromate into bromide by lattice oxygen-rich MnOOH. The existed surface Mn(IV) on lattice oxygen-rich MnOOH can accept electrons from lattice oxygen and ·O 2 - to generate surface transient Mn(II)/Mn(III), in which Mn(II)/Mn(III) can promote the reduction of bromate into bromide during catalytic ozonation. This study provides a promising strategy for the development of bromate-controlling technologies in water treatment.

The present study investigated the effect of oxoanions on catalytic behaviour of copper corrosion products (CCPs) during chlorination of bromide-containing waters. Three types of oxoanions (carbonate, sulphate, and phosphate) and four types of CCPs (Cu 2+ , Cu(OH) 2 , Cu 2 O, and CuO) were involved in investigation and the effect of oxoanions concentration was also examined. The result indicated that carbonate and sulphate slightly inhibited oxidant decay in the presence of CCPs, but the formation of brominated disinfection by-products (Br-DBPs) remained largely unchanged. In contrast, the presence of phosphate (0.2–1 mM) almost eliminated the catalytic effect of Cu 2+ . For CCP solids (i.e. Cu(OH) 2 , Cu 2 O, and CuO), phosphate preferentially inhibited the formation of bromate rather than Br-DBPs. Despite the catalysis by CCP solids was reduced to some extent, the oxidant decay rate and bromate and Br-DBP formation were still significantly higher than blank groups, even at high phosphate concentration. By testing different addition scheme (simultaneous/sequential addition), it was proposed that phosphate was a strong competitor for hypohalites, rapidly destroying CCPs-hypohalites complexes on some adsorption sites. However, there were some specific sites that can only be adsorbed by hypohalites, leading to the incomplete inhibition of phosphate. Finally, the inhibition effect of phosphate on CCPs catalysis was tested in real water matrix. For Cu 2+ , higher reduction of bromate and Br-DBPs was found in raw water rather than filtered water, while converse pattern was true for Cu(OH) 2 and Cu 2 O, and this discrepancy can be ascribed to the difference in catalytic mechanism between Cu 2+ and CCP solids.

In this study, we systematically investigated the removal of bromate (BrO 3 − ) with core-shell Fe@Fe 2 O 3 nanowires at neutral pH, especially the effects of surface bound ferrous ions and molecular oxygen. In the presence of Fe@Fe 2 O 3 nanowires, bromate was reduced to Br − efficiently with the generation of HOBr intermediates. Bromide species analyses and nanowires characterizations indicated that surface bound ferrous ions of core-shell Fe@Fe 2 O 3 nanowires could effectively promote the BrO 3 − removal. Meanwhile, molecular oxygen competed electrons from both Fe 2+ and Fe 0 to generate reactive oxygen species of O 2 − , H 2 O 2 , and OH during the bromate removal process. Among the generated reactive oxygen species, O 2 − and H 2 O 2 favored of bromate removal, but OH inhibited. We proposed a bromate removal mechanism with core-shell Fe@Fe 2 O 3 nanowires, which suggested that the effect of surface bound Fe(II) and molecular oxygen was taken into consideration when using nZVI for bromate remediation in waters. This study can not only deepen our understanding on the bromate removal with zero valent iron, and also shed light on the design of high performance bromate removal materials.

Reduction of bromate to bromide is of great significance for the remediation of bromate-containing waters. In natural water, some low-molecular-weight organics (LMWOs) ubiquitously coexist with bromate. However, LMWOs-mediated photoreduction of bromate has been rarely studied. Herein, we found that acids (formic acid, acetic acid, pyruvic acid, lactic acid, and oxalic acid), aldehydes (formaldehyde and acetaldehyde), alcohols (tert-butyl and isopropyl), ketones (acetone, 2,3-butanedione, acetylacetone (AA), and 2,5-hexanedione), and quinones (hydroquinone and benzoquinone) could all enhance the photoreduction of bromate under UV irradiation. The mechanisms of LMWOs-mediated photoreduction of bromate were systematically elucidated. Special attention was paid to AA, because the photolysis of AA generates most of the other tested aliphatic LMWOs. The presence of LMWOs exerted complicated effects on the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs): On the one hand, the presence of AA inhibited the formation of hypobromous acid (HBrO), which is believed to be helpful to control the potential formation of DBPs, because HBrO is a key precursor of halogenated DBPs. On the other hand, the LMWOs possibly functioned as precursors of organic halogens. The results here may help us to better understand the fate of bromine species in the natural aquatic environment.

Remediating persistent organic contaminants in near-neutral aquatic environments remains a challenge for conventional homogeneous Fe(II,III)-mediated sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs), which typically require acidic pH or generate hazardous byproducts. This study introduces an electro-activated sulfite process (Fe-EC/S(IV)) employing sacrificial iron electrodes to overcome these limitations. Continuous anodic Fe 2+ release sustains active FeHSO 3 + complexes, enabling efficient S(IV) activation at pH 4−6. Mechanistic analysis identifies SO 4 •− as the dominant oxidant, formed via inner-sphere electron transfer within FeHSO 3 + complexes, followed by aerobic chain reactions (SO 3 •− → SO 5 •− → SO 4 •− ). The system achieves rapid oxcarbazepine degradation (pseudo-first-order constant, k obs = 1.15 min −1 ), representing a 57.5-fold kinetic enhancement over standalone Fe-EC at pH 6. Notably, the process intrinsically suppresses the carcinogenic BrO 3 − formation (<1 μg L −1 ) through the S(IV)-mediated reductive quenching of bromine intermediates, substantially outperforming Fe-EC/peroxomonosulfate systems (11.3 μg L −1 BrO 3 − ). Demonstrating >70% removal in natural waters without pH adjustment or added electrolytes, and broad-spectrum efficacy (77.9–91.7%) across contaminant classes, this electrochemically sustained process offers a novel AOP paradigm integrating the radical-based oxidation with inherent byproduct control for complex water remediation scenarios.

In this study, nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were successfully synthesized through a facile one-step hydrothermal approach using honeysuckle and ethylenediamine (EDA) as carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. The obtained N-CDs displayed intense blue fluorescence emission at 420 nm upon excitation at 350 nm, along with an exceptional fluorescence quantum yield of 60.53%. Systematic characterization experiments employing transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the morphological features, surface functional groups, and elemental composition of the N-CDs. Remarkably, in HCl medium, chloride ion-catalyzed bromate oxidation led to pronounced fluorescence quenching of the N-CDs. A highly linear correlation ( R ² = 0.9965) was found between bromate concentration (64–1024 ng·mL − 1 ) and fluorescence quenching efficiency, as quantified by the equation log( I ₀/ I ) = 3.86685 C + 0.00557, with an impressive detection limit of 14 ng·mL − 1 ( S / N = 3). The practical application of this sensing platform to bromate determination in flour-based food products and tap water samples yielded satisfactory recoveries, ranging from 87.4 to 104.4%, with relative standard deviations below 3.5%. These findings highlight the great potential of the as-synthesized N-CDs as a reliable fluorescent nanoprobe for sensitive and selective bromate detection in complex food and environmental samples.

In this study, an electrochemically activated persulfate (EAP) process using boron-doped diamond (BDD) as the anode was adopted for the activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) to treat bromide-containing water. In this EAP process, the activation of PDS to generate SO 4 •- is mainly caused by direct electron transfer at the cathode. The synergetic oxidation by the free radical oxidants, including OH• electrogenerated on the BDD anode and SO 4 •- produced on the cathode, is the major driving force to oxidize bromide to bromate through the continuous stepwise reaction. The cathodic reduction of high-valent bromine compounds coexisting in the EAP process could also affect the distribution of bromine by-products. The bromate formed in the EAP process decreased when humic acid coexisted in the bromide-containing water because the active bromine (Br• and HOBr) could react with organic matter to form brominated by-products. Bromate formation was increased with increasing PDS dosage, initial bromide concentration and current density. An acidic environment is beneficial for inhibiting the formation of bromate, but it might also increase the risk of formation of brominated by-products.

Reduction of bromate (BrO 3 − ) by various technologies has been extensively investigated, while the fate of oxygen and bromine atoms in BrO 3 − in these processes has been largely ignored. In this study, reduction of BrO 3 − by Fe(II) ions was investigated under various conditions via electron spin resonance (ESR), laser flash photolysis (LFP), probe of phenol and quenching experiments. It was found that reduction of BrO 3 − by Fe(II) ions produced HO•, O 2 • − and reactive bromine species (eg., Br• and Br 2 • − ). HO• and O 2 • − were generated from release of one/two oxygen atoms in BrO 3 − and its reduction intermediates (BrO 2 − and BrO − ) at one time, while Br• and Br 2 • − were generated from activation of hypobromous acid by Fe(II) and reactions of HO• with formed Br − . Due to the formation of these reactive species, the tested ten organic pollutants with diverse structures can be efficiently degraded, which including carbamazepine (CBZ), ibuprofen, phenol, benzoic acid, paracetamol, bisphenol a, 4-chlorophenol, oxcarbazepine, diclofenac and sulfamethoxazole. CBZ degradation intermediates by BrO 3 − /Fe(II) system were specially identified by liquid chromatography (LC)-mass spectrometry (MS), and three pathways of hydroxylation/nitrosylation, ring contraction-amine cleavage and bromination for CBZ degradation were proposed accordingly. This study might shed new fundamental insights to bromate reduction and its implication for transformation of co-existed organic pollutants.
