Heat waves, increasing in frequency, pose significant risks to human health and economic stability. Traditional personal cooling technologies, such as Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, are energy-intensive and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, necessitating the development of energy-efficient alternatives. Radiative cooling fabrics (RCFs) could be an ideal method for personal thermal management, while conventional petroleum-based fabrics exhibit low reflectivity and emissivity, limiting their cooling performance. This research introduces hybrid cooling films by incorporating phase change capsules (PCCs) into polypropylene (PP) films treated with a lysozyme-phytic acid coating to enhance hydrophilicity. The resulting RCFs demonstrated significantly improved reflectivity, emissivity and a high latent heat of 108.63 J/g, achieving a cooling performance of 4.62 °C. These findings highlight a scalable approach for manufacturing advanced textiles, contributing to more efficient thermal management strategies in response to rising global temperatures.

Heat waves, increasingly frequent and intense, pose significant risks to social and economic activities. Thus personal thermal management based on typical petroleum-based fabrics such as polypropylene fabrics is gaining importance. To address these limitations of low latent heat, unsatisfied optical performance, and industrial production, a calcium alginate system was incorporated into a polypropylene matrix to form a secondary network that encapsulates phase change microcapsules (PCCs). This strategy effectively prevents PCCs from shedding while significantly enhancing the latent heat. Furthermore, the efficient incorporation of PCCs improved the optical properties of the obtained composites, with emissivity reaching 95.5 % and reflectivity increasing to 88.8 %. The enthalpy of the composite reached 132.2 J/g. Additionally, the composite demonstrated exceptional thermal performance, reducing temperatures by up to 11.2 °C (with an average reduction of 4.4 °C) during the day and 1.3 °C (average) at night. These results suggest that double-networked composite holds great potential for sustainable, energy-efficient thermal management and could pave the way for the development of innovative passive cooling materials and devices.

Phase change materials can store and release large amounts of heat over a small temperature range. Phase transition interval and phase change latent heat are important indicators for phase change materials, which determine phase change materials application in different temperature zones. Due to DSC has the quality error in sampling. Therefore, the T-history method is used here to derive the phase change interval, the phase change latent heat and the thermal conductivity of phase change materials. We chose CaCl 2 •6H 2 O composite SAT, DA-MA and OA phase change materials to improve the t-history method. The formula for phase transition interval, phase change latent heat and thermal conductivity is derived. The T-history method is more accurate and can compensate for the inaccuracy of DSC. The improved T-history method is not affected by mass, and the calculated thermophysical parameters are more representative, which is suitable for the parameter calculation of phase change materials with large mass.

It is important to explore and develop multifunctional phase change composites with high latent-heat capacity and photothermal conversion capability. A novel ultralight and flexible carbon foam (CF)-based phase change composite was fabricated by encapsulating n-eicosane into a CF skeleton that had been precoated with titanium(III) oxide (Ti2O3) nanoparticles (NPs). Morphological structures, as well as the properties of leakage-proof, thermal energy storage, temperature regulation, and photothermal conversion, of the fabricated phase change composites were investigated. The results indicated that the flexible CF skeleton derived from melamine foam (MF) through stabilization in air followed by carbonization in nitrogen was highly porous, which ensured excellent mechanical support and large mass ratio of n-eicosane for the composites. The loading percentage of n-eicosane as high as 84% which acted as thermal storage unit guaranteed high latent-heat capacity and good temperature regulation property of the composite; the melting/crystallization temperatures and enthalpies of the corresponding composite was 36.4/33.7 °C and 200.1/200.6 kJ·kg–1, respectively. The CF skeleton modified with Ti2O3 NPs endowed the fabricated phase change composites with enhanced leakage-proof property, photothermal conversion capability, superior thermal reliability, and temperature regulation ability. Therefore, the resultant phase change composites are believed to have promising and potential applications in solar thermal-energy storage, waste-heat recovery, and infrared stealth of military targets, and so forth.

Latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) technology can solve the problem of a mismatch between energy supply and demand in time, space and intensity and thus has become a research on focus in energy and environmental protection. The low thermal conductivity of phase change materials (PCMs) is the primary bottleneck of the popularization application of LHTES technology. An effective way to solve this problem is adding fins into the PCM container to enhance heat transfer, there has been no report on the effect of the installation location of fins on the heat transfer characteristics of the PCM in a LHTES unit. To study the effect of fins installed at different locations on the heat transfer, this work have investigated the melting characteristics of PCM in an annular with different installation angle of fins ( θ ) via a numerical simulation method, which is based on an enthalpy-porous medium model. In addition, the numerical calculation results are verified via experimentation. On this basis, the melting processes of the PCM in horizontal, annular units with fins installed at five different values of θ under three fixed wall temperature conditions (60, 70, and 80 °C) have been simulated. The simulation results have been compared to those of the unit without fins. The results show that although fins inhibit natural convection, the addition of fins can lead to an increase in the melting rate and a decrease in the melting time due to an increase in the total amount of heat exchanged. Considering the entire melting process, the melting rate of the PCM in the unit with fins installed at θ = 0° is maximum. When θ reaches 45°, the further increase of θ has no marked impact on the melting rate of the PCM in the unit. Based on the trend of the change of the mean Nusselt number with the Fourier number ( Fo ), the heat transfer of the melting process of the PCM is divided into four stages. Additionally, the dimensionless criterion relationship between the melting fraction ( f ) and SteFoRa 1/6 when θ = 0° is fitted as f = 0.24 X 3 - 1.13 X 2 + 1.82 X , where X = SteFoRa 1 / 6 .

The utilization of paraffin in latent heat storage system is limited by its leakage and low thermal conductivity . To address such challenges, we prepare composite phase change materials (PCMs) with enhanced thermal conductivity and shape stability. Paraffin is supported by porous Al 2 O 3 which is synthesized by solution combustion synthesis (SCS). The porous structure of Al 2 O 3 is quite influenced by the fuel species in SCS reactions. The glycine-induced Al 2 O 3 shows highly hierarchical porous structure, which can improve the anti-leakage performance of the composites. The thermal conductivity of Al 2 O 3 /PW reaches 1.27 W/m•K with an Al 2 O 3 mass ratio of 50 wt%, which is 5 times of pure paraffin. The composite also presents acceptable latent heat capacity of higher than 100 J/g and very good thermal cycling stability. These characteristics assure the promising application of Al 2 O 3 /PW composites for thermal energy storage.

Thermal energy storage wood (TESW) was fabricated by using graphene aerogel encapsulated polyethylene glycol (PEG) as phase change material and wood as the matrix. The microstructure of TESW was investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), the thermal properties of TESW was determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TG) and laser flash diffusivity apparatus (LFA). The results showed that: (1) graphene aerogel (GA) encapsulated PEG composite was founded in the lumens of wood, there was no apparent interface between PEG and graphene aerogel; (2) the melting and freezing enthalpy of TESW were 11.81 and 27.91 J g−1, respectively. The melting and freezing point were 20 °C and 15 °C, respectively, which were suitable for human comfortable temperature; (3) incorporation of graphene aerogel improved the thermal conductivity of TESW apparently. Thermal conductivity of TESW was 0.374 W (m*K)−1, which increased about 274% compared to pure wood; (4) TG and hygroscopicity test indicated that the TESW had excellent thermal and dimensional stability. The TESW was suggested as energy conservation building material for indoor temperature regulating due to its comfortable phase change temperature and prior latent heat.

It is vital to effectively retain the high latent heat of phase change material (PCM) when it is encapsulated in package matrix. Natural Wood has been considered as a potential matrix for PCM package as its micro-pore and nano-pore structures and rich in active groups. However, the influence of the wood pore structure on the latent heat of PCM is still unclear. In this study, paraffin wax was encapsulated with delignified balsa wood, and the influence of the pore structure of delignified balsa wood on the latent heat of PCM was investigated. The obtained results showed that the melting latent heat of the wood-based phase change material (WCPCM) with delignification treatment increased from 135.7 J/g to 175.1 J/g. This was attributed to the lower effect of the spatial confinement on the cell wall with the opening of pits and the improvement of permeability, due to the increase of the number of pores that are larger than 10 nm. The pores that are smaller than 10 nm on the cell wall were closed due to hydrogen bonding, which caused the shrinking of the wood cell wall and the increase of porosity. A superhydrophobic surface with photothermal function was constructed on WCPCM by spraying polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and depositing candle soot (CS). The composites can be heated from room temperature to 64.9 °C within 150 s under simulated sunlight. The efficiency of the light-thermal conversion is 87.9%. PDMS acted as an intermediate bridge to increase the stability of CS coating and gave a self-cleaning ability to the photothermal conversion coating. The composites with photothermal and self-cleaning functional coat can be used outdoor for the energy conservation of buildings.

To develop a material that can be applied in the field of thermoregulation materials for residential buildings and degradation of organic pollutants. A novel microencapsulated phase change material, paraffin@TiO 2 /Ag, was prepared using interfacial condensation technology. The paraffin@TiO 2 /Ag microcapsules' melting point and latent heat were 48.00 °C and 63.56 J/g, respectively, according to the DSC study results, and their encapsulation rate was 46.11 %. In addition, the experimental results of photocatalytic degradation of MB (methylene blue) showed that the paraffin@TiO 2 /Ag microcapsules had high photocatalytic activity for organic dyes under natural light, and the degradation rate of MB reached 99 % when the light exposure time reached 4 h. By comparing the reaction rate constant of MB by paraffin@TiO 2 microcapsules (0.98969 h −1 ) with that of MB by paraffin@TiO 2 /Ag microcapsules (1.15845 h −1 ), it was learned that the introduction of Ag nanoparticles effectively improved the photocatalytic activity of the phase change microcapsules.

This study systematically optimizes the synthesis parameters for nano-enhanced phase-change materials (NEPCMs) based on paraffin wax and copper oxide. The objective is to collectively improve both thermal conductivity and latent heat capacity. Unlike the previous research, the present approach considers all significant synthesis parameters simultaneously, employing a fractional factorial approach for efficient experimentation. By varying CuO nanoparticle sizes, paraffin wax melting temperatures, and mass fractions of CuO and surfactant in pure paraffin wax, the comprehensive thermal analysis reveals a maximum enhancement of 51.2% thermal conductivity compared to pure paraffin wax. In addition to thermal conductivity improvement, the applied optimization strategy identifies six NEPCM combinations, collectively enhancing thermal conductivity, latent heat of melting, and solidification. Among these, one NEPCM exhibits notable improvements of 13.39%, 6.9%, and 4.5% in thermal conductivity, latent heat of melting, and solidification, respectively, making it suitable for thermal energy storage systems due to combined enhanced thermal properties. Additionally, the ANOVA approach indicates the melting temperature of pure PCM as the most significant factor for thermal conductivity enhancement, with a contribution of 55.45%. The present study has a direct impact on improving thermal properties, specifically in thermal energy storage technology, making it relevant to the thermal management research community.

Phase change Materials (PCMs) have a promising future in the energy fields of latent heat storage , solar energy conversion and building thermal management. In this work, two types of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with different diameters were prepared and combined with paraffin, octadecanol and stearic acid PCMs, respectively. The one-pot hydrothermal method was employed for the synthesis of three-dimensional graphene network encapsulating organic PCMs. There is some research investigate that rGO addition has different degrees of impact on the latent heat and thermal conductivity of different kinds of organic PCMs. The rGO/PCM composite has a significantly enhanced thermal conductivity of 3.21 W m −1 K −1 with an rGO loading of 10 wt%. Furthermore, a fraction of graphene was substituted by Ag nanoparticles . The thermal conductivity of rGO/PCM/Ag could be as high as 5.89 W m −1 K −1 . The size effect of rGO has a significant influence on the thermal contact resistance . The synergistic effect of rGO network and Ag nanoparticles also benefits the thermal conductivity of nano-enhanced phase change materials (NePCMs).

Phase change materials (PCMs) have been used for energy storage within a wide range of applications. However, they are scarcely used in the field of anti-icing of glass insulators in transmission lines under glaze ice (the icing temperature is 0∼-5 °C). Herein, we prepared phase change microcapsules (MPCMs) and applied them to permanent room temperature vulcanized (PRTV) silicon rubber to prepare anti-icing coating on glass. The n -tetradecane and nucleating agent were used to obtain a requirable phase change temperature. The MPCMs in the coating released latent heat when the temperature dropped from 2.25 to -4.73 °C, which was consistent with the temperature of glaze icing. Furthermore, MPCMs roughened the coating surface and imparted superhydrophobic to the coating. Compared with PRTV coating, the prepared MPCM/PRTV coating extended the freezing time of water droplets from 1381 to 3432 s. Additionally, the MPCMs in the coating could absorb and release energy repeatedly and maintain intactness without cracking during icing/melting cycles, and the anti-icing/deicing performance of the MPCM/PRTV coating demonstrated durability. The heat storage and release of the MPCM/PRTV coating is driven by the temperature difference, thus, we define this coating as having a “temperature switch” effect. The prepared coating shows potential anti-icing applications for glass insulators under glaze ice where the temperature fluctuates within the phase transition temperature range of this coating.
