Polymer Electrolyte Membranes from Microporous Troger’s Base Polymers for Fuel Cells

Xinming Du,Yongjiang Yuan,Tianming Dong,Xiaoyu Chi,Zhe Wang

Fuel cells (FCs) have attracted much attention because of their high energy conversion efficiency and cleanliness. However, polyelectrolytes are a key component of FCs, and their cost and performance are not ideal at present, which is an obstacle to the development of FCs. Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIM) have attracted much attention as a class of membrane materials due to their three-dimensional pore structure, which can provide channels for ion transport. However, it remains challenging to prepare PIM membranes due to their poor solubility and brittleness. A novel soluble Troger’s base (TB)-PIM polymer is proposed in this paper. The prepared TB-based membranes with rigid and contorted backbones exhibit excellent dimensional stability (<8% swelling ratio at 60 °C), mechanical properties, and thermal stability and form subnanometer cavities to allow rapid ion transport. Therefore, the proton conductivity of the 4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-1,3-phenylenediamine dihydrochloride (HEPD)/4,4′-diamine-3,3′-dimethyl-biphenyl (DMBP)-TB membrane is 58.3 mS/cm at 80 °C. The OH– conductivity of the HEPD/DMBP-QTB anion exchange membrane (AEM) is 105.9 mS/cm at 80 °C. Moreover, the single cell assembled with an HEPD/DMBP-QTB AEM showed a peak power density of 76.6 mW/cm2 in H2 air (CO2-free) at 60 °C.

Design and synthesis of side-chain optimized poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide)-g-poly(styrene sulfonic acid) as proton exchange membrane for fuel cell applications: Balancing the water-resistance and the sulfonation degree

Guangbo Zeng,Dongqing Zhang,Liuming Yan,Baohua Yue,Ting Pan,Yidong Hu,Shufa He,Hongbin Zhao,Jiujun Zhang

Side-chain optimized poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide)- g -poly (styrene sulfonic acid) (PPO- g -PSSA) is designed with balanced water-resistance and sulfonation degree. The PPO- g -PSSA is synthesized by controlled atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from brominated poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO- x Br) and ethyl styrene-4-sulfonate and followed by hydrolysis. A series of PPO-g-PSSA are prepared possessing different bromination degree (x) of PPO-xBr and polymerization degree (m) of the side-chains and the water-resistances of the fabricated membranes are investigated. The results show that a PPO-g-PSSA at relatively low x (x < 0.2) and high m (m > 4) exhibits good balance between the water-resistance and the sulfonation degree. Namely, it displays suitable proton conductivity with compromised water-resistance. Moreover, a maximum ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 3.24 mmol g −1 is reached without the sacrifice of water-resistance. In addition, PPO-g-0.08PSSA-13 and PPO-g-0.14PSSA-4 are chosen characterized by thermogravimetric analysis , proton conductivities and mechanical properties. At 90% RH, the optimized PPO-g-0.08PPSA-13 possesses a proton conductivity of 37.9 mS cm −1  at 40 °C and 45.5 mS cm −1  at 95 °C, respectively.

Hydrogen, methane and power tri-generation from coal-based fuels in protonic ceramic fuel cells

Haojie Zhu,Junbiao Li,Yuan Zhang,Zhipeng Liu,Junda You,Guoqing Ma,Ling Fu,Senran Hao,Hongxin Yang,Shuo Zhai,Pengfei Wang,Jing Zhu,Suling Shen,Jialiang Chen,Ying Teng,Bin Chen,Heping Xie

The traditional utilization of coal fuels is primarily through direct combustion to generate electricity, with low efficiency and significant carbon dioxide emissions conflicting with the goal of carbon neutrality. Here, for the first time, we proposed a novel electrochemical system to achieve the tri-generation of hydrogen, power, and methane from coal-based fuels, with CO 2 emission efficiency reduced in tail gas, enabled by protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) combined with water gasification of coal and CO 2 methanation. As demonstrated, the system firstly achieved an enhanced hydrogen production rate of up to 34.8 μmol min −1 g −1 from the syngas produced by coal gasification. Sequentially, the system achieved an excellent peak power density of 868 mW cm −2 at 600 °C in the PCFCs fueled by the syngas, enhanced by a catalytic functional layer (CFL, NiMn@YSZ). In addition, the system is able to produce methane at 6.3 mL min −1 during in-situ CO 2 methanation at 500 °C with a current density of 110 mA cm −2 . This work introduces a new electrochemical strategy for efficiently utilizing coal to generate electricity and value-added chemicals.

A Flexible CsH5(PO4)2-Doped Composite Electrolyte Membrane for Intermediate-Temperature Fuel Cells

Xiaojing Chen,Wen Wen,Jing Hu,Hejia Su,Haibin Li,Xiangyang Kong,Marta Boaventura

Based on CsH5(PO4)2, sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK), and phosphosilicate sol, proton-conducting CsH5(PO4)2/phosphosilicate/SPEEK composite electrolyte membranes have been prepared by a sol–gel method followed by mechanical ballmilling. The chemical structures, morphologies, thermal performances, stability, and proton conductivities of the composite electrolyte membranes were investigated. After incorporating the SPEEK polymer, these composite membranes exhibited adequate flexibility and mechanical performance; despite inorganic content of up to 80 wt%, a tensile strength of 6.2 MPa was maintained. Specifically, the composite electrolyte membrane displays a high proton conductivity of 14.6 mS cm−1 at 250°C under 47% H2O/N2 atmosphere. A fuel cell equipped with the composite electrolyte membrane showed a stable output voltage over the continuous measurement of 50 h under a constant output current density of 40 mA cm−2.

Highly Effective Dual Transition Metal Macrocycle Based Electrocatalyst with Macro-/Mesoporous Structures for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Xinxin Jin,Yan Xie,Jiahui Huang

Metal macrocycle based non-noble metal electrocatalysts (NNMEs) with highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity, good stability, and excellent resistance to the methanol cross-over effect have been regarded as one of the most important alternatives for Pt or Pt based alloys, which are widely used in fuel cells. However, the expensive price of most metal macrocycles hinder further investigation of such a family of NNMEs in large production for practical applications. Here, we introduce a simple strategy to synthesize metal macrocycle based porous carbon (MMPC) material with low cost and easy production of metal macrocycles (hemin (Hm) and vitamin B12(VB12)) as raw materials by using a hard template of MgO. The pyrolysis of MMPC under the optimal temperature at 900 °C shows comparative ORR performance relative to commercial Pt/C, which could be attributed to the large surface area, macro-/mesoporous structure, the carbon layer encapsulating transition metal based oxides, as well as N-doped carbon species. In addition, MMPC (900) displays a better electrochemical property than 20 wt % Pt/C in terms of durability and tolerance to methanol in O2-saturated 0.1 M KOH media. Keywords:metal macrocycle;macro-/mesoporous structure;oxygen reduction reaction;fuel cell

Aqueous Phase Approach to Au-Modified Pt–Co/C toward Efficient and Durable Cathode Catalyst of PEMFCs

Chen Ding,Zijie Mao,Jia-Shun Liang,Xianxian Qin,Qing Zhang,Fan Yang,Qing Li,Wen-Bin Cai

The commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) calls for the development of active and durable Pt-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by means of a cost-effective and environmentally benign protocol. We report herein an all aqueous phase preparation of carbon supported Au-modified Pt–Co alloy catalyst (Au/Pt–Co/C), which involves the dimethylamine borane co-reduction of aqueous Pt(II) and Co(II) precursors to form a Pt–Co/C catalyst and the ethanol reduction of an aqueous Au(III) precursor to form Au/Pt–Co/C. This Au/Pt–Co/C catalyst not only shows a greatly enhanced ORR activity like the homemade Pt–Co/C and state-of-art Pt–Co/C(com) catalysts as compared to the Pt/C catalyst but also exhibits a much higher durability over the Pt/C(com), homemade Pt–Co/C, and state-of-art Pt–Co/C(com) catalysts in accelerated degradation tests (ADTs) with both half-cell and single-cell configurations. Specifically, the maximum power density of a PEMFC involving the Au/Pt–Co/C cathode suffers only a 6% loss after 30 000 cycles of a standard ADT while that involving the state-of-art Pt–Co/C(com) suffers a 37% loss. This research provides an alternative route to prepare efficient and durable Pt-based ORR catalysts toward a widespread application of PEMFCs.

N,N-bis(sulfopropyl)aminyl-4-phenyl polysulfone and O,O′-bis(sulfopropyl)resorcinol-5-yl-4-phenyl polysulfone composite membrane for proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Ting Pan,Baohua Yue,Liuming Yan,Guangbo Zeng,Yidong Hu,Shufa He,Wei Lu,Hongbin Zhao,Jiujun Zhang

Novel functionalized polysulfone with high local density of sulfonic acid groups, N , N -bis(sulfopropyl)aminyl-4-phenyl polysulfone or O , O′ -bis(sulfopropyl)resorcinol-5-yl-4-phenyl polysulfone (PSF-X-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H, X = N or O) are synthesized. These polymers are synthesized by bromination of polysulfone followed by Suzuki cross-coupling reaction to graft the aminophenyl groups and the dimethoxyphenyl groups onto the polymeric backbone, followed by introduction of the sulfopropyl groups via sultone ring-opening reaction. In addition, the composite membrane of PSF-O-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H and PSF-N-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H is also synthesized for comparison. The maximum proton conductivity of composite PSF-O-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H and PSF-N-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H reaches 46.66 mS cm −1 at 95 °C and 90% RH, higher than PSF-O-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H (42.06 mS cm −1 ) and PSF-N-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H (38.76 mS cm −1 ). Meanwhile, the composite exhibits compromised water uptake and swelling ratio, and low methanol permeability . The excellent overall performance of the composite is attributed to phase-separation between the hydrophilic and the hydrophobic subphases, and the hydrogen-bonding network developed in the hydrophilic subphases.

Fe–N–C Boosts the Stability of Supported Platinum Nanoparticles for Fuel Cells

Fei Xiao,Yian Wang,Gui-Liang Xu,Fei Yang,Shangqian Zhu,Cheng-Jun Sun,Yingdan Cui,Zhiwen Xu,Qinglan Zhao,Juhee Jang,Xiaoyi Qiu,Ershuai Liu,Walter S. Drisdell,Zidong Wei,Meng Gu,Khalil Amine,Minhua Shao

The poor durability of Pt-based nanoparticles dispersed on carbon black is the challenge for the application of long-life polymer electrolyte fuel cells. Recent work suggests that Fe- and N-codoped carbon (Fe–N–C) might be a better support than conventional high-surface-area carbon. In this work, we find that the electrochemical surface area retention of Pt/Fe–N–C is much better than that of commercial Pt/C during potential cycling in both acidic and basic media. In situ inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry studies indicate that the Pt dissolution rate of Pt/Fe–N–C is 3 times smaller than that of Pt/C during cycling. Density functional theory calculations further illustrate that the Fe–N–C substrate can provide strong and stable support to the Pt nanoparticles and alleviate the oxide formation by adjusting the electronic structure. The strong metal–substrate interaction, together with a lower metal dissolution rate and highly stable support, may be the reason for the significantly enhanced stability of Pt/Fe–N–C. This finding highlights the importance of carbon support selection to achieve a more durable Pt-based electrocatalyst for fuel cells.

Pt/SnO2-Pd nanoelectrode applied for hydrogen sensor with zero-power consumption and low detection limit

Xinyue Li,Hongjing Fei,Yanlin Zhang,Zheng Zhang,Huakang Zong,Bo Liu,Guotao Duan,Yuanyuan Luo

The detection of low-concentration hydrogen at room temperature is still a challenge, which contributes to taking precautions as soon as possible when hydrogen leaks. In this study, we prepared Pt/SnO 2 -Pd nanomaterial as nanoelectrode applied for a fuel cell-type hydrogen sensor with zero power consumption . The sensing results show that such fuel cell-type H 2 gas sensor has high selectivity and good sensitivity to H 2 gas, with an unprecedented low detection limit of 1 ppm, and the humidity has little impact on the sensor's performance. Based on DFT calculations, the low adsorption energy and the electron transfer interaction between Pd and H promote the adsorption and dissociation processes of H 2 molecules, which lead to the hydrogen oxidation reaction acceleration and shorter times of response and recovery. In addition, this Pt/SnO 2 -Pd based sensor has also advantages of high selectivity and zero-power consumption, which may provide a broad application prospect for fuel cell vehicles and voltage transformers, etc.

Three-Dimensional Carbon Monolith Coated by Nano-TiO2 for Anode Enhancement in Microbial Fuel Cells

Fan Zhao,Yini Chen,Shiyang Zhang,Meng Li,Xinhua Tang

A three-dimensional (3D) anode is essential for high-performance microbial fuel cells (MFCs). In this study, 3D porous carbon monoliths from a wax gourd (WGCM) were obtained by freeze-drying and carbonization. Nano-TiO2was further coated onto the surface of WGCM to obtain a nano-TiO2/WGCM anode. The WGCM anode enhanced the maximum power density of MFCs by 167.9% compared with the carbon felt anode, while nano-TiO2/WGCM anode additionally increased the value by 45.8% to achieve 1396.2 mW/m2. WGCM enhancement was due to the 3D porous structure, the good conductivity and the surface hydrophilicity, which enhanced electroactive biofilm formation and anodic electron transfer. In addition, nano-TiO2modification enhanced the enrichment ofAcinetobacter, an electricigen, by 31.0% on the anode to further improve the power production. The results demonstrated that the nano-TiO2/WGCM was an effective anode for power enhancement in MFCs.Keywords:microbial fuel cells;anode;carbon monolith;nano-TiO2;Acinetobacter

Nafion-threaded MOF laminar membrane with efficient and stable transfer channels towards highly enhanced proton conduction

Wang Yan,Gao Hexiang,Wu Wenjia,Zhou Zhuofan,Yang Zhiwei,Wang Jingtao,Zou Yecheng

Porous laminar membranes hold great promise to realize ultrafast ion transfer if efficient and stable transfer channels are constructed in vertical direction. Here, metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets bearing imidazole molecules in the pores were designed as building blocks to assemble free-standing MOF laminar membrane. Then, Nafion chains were threaded into the pores induced by electrostatic attraction from imidazole molecules by slowly filtering dilute Nafion solution. We demonstrate that the threaded Nafion chains lock adjacent MOF nanosheets, affording highly enhanced structural stability to the resultant laminar membrane with almost no water swelling. Significantly, abundant acid-base pairs are formed in the pores along Nafion chains, working as efficient, continuous conduction pathways in vertical direction. Proton conductivities as high as 110 and 46 mS·cm −1 are obtained by this membrane under 100% and 40% relative humidity (RH), respectively, which are two orders of magnitude higher than that of pristine MOF membrane. The conductivity under low humidity (40% RH) is even over 2 times higher than that of commercial Nafion membrane, generating the maximum power density of 1,100 mW·cm −2 in hydrogen fuel cell (vs. 291 mW·cm −2 of Nafion membrane). Besides, the influence of water state on proton transfer in confined space is investigated in detail.

Decisive Effect of Hydrophobic Rigid-Flexible Coupled Side Chains of Polycarbazoles on the Performance of Anion Exchange Membranes for Fuel Cells

Ning Xie,Tao Wang,Haowei Kang,Yiting Liu,Xinli Li,Qiang Weng,Xingming Ning,Pei Chen,Xinbing Chen,Zhongwei An

High-performance anion exchange membranes (AEMs) have garnered increasing attention in recent years. However, commercial progress of the AEM for fuel cells is still hindered by its low ionic conductivity and inadequate alkaline stability. In this study, we propose the incorporation of a hydrophobic rigid-flexible coupled side chain into a polycarbazolyl AEM as an innovative approach to enhance both the conductivity and stability. The results demonstrate that the AEMs with hydrophobic rigid-flexible coupled side chains exhibit superior conductivity and stability compared with those without (PQMC-0). For example, the ion exchange capacity of PQMC-10 is reduced by 11% than PQMC-0, but its conductivity is enhanced by 14%, dimensional change is decreased by almost half, and oxidative stability is increased by more than four times. Improved conductivity of the AEMs can be attributed to the presence of hydrophobic rigid-flexible coupled side chains, making it easier for AEM to construct microphase separation to facilitate ion transport. Furthermore, the introduction of hydrophobic side chains reduces water absorption of the membrane, thereby enhancing its dimensional stability while minimizing the intake of free radicals or hydroxide ions present in water. Consequently, this modification significantly improves the oxidative and alkaline stability as well. Finally, the PQMC-10 shows a maximum power density of 649 mW cm–2 in a single fuel cell, which is three times bigger than that of PQMC-0, indicating a promising application in the field of fuel cells.
