Superiorities in the stability and pliability of phase change material (PCM) promote its application fields in thermal storage dramatically. In this work, a covalent polymerized phase change composite (Hexamethylene diisocyanate trimer (HDIT) @ polyethyleneglycol (PEG)) with shape memory, self-healing effect, electromagnetic interference shielding (EMI), and integrated thermal management functions was designed via a facile hot-press process. The HDIT@PEG covalent network captured unreacted PEG by forming hydrogen bond with exposed hydroxyl groups (–OH) of PEG, the trapped PEG can still exert the properties of absorbing or releasing latent heat, as well as the sufficient enthalpy (134 J/g) can effectively support the realization of thermal storage. Impressively, the HDIT@PEG matrix displays satisfactory self-healing of the original covalent network at the macroscopically damaged interface, while the obtained stable shape PCMs (SSPCMs) can achieve a high EMI shielding effectiveness (54.1 dB) with the sprayed MXene layer thickness of 20 um in X-band. Meanwhile, the SSPCM can also achieve effective electro/photo-to-thermal conversion, which provides a possibility for the realization of multi-source driven thermal storage. In brief, a new preparation is proposed for preparing SSPCMs, which is expected to be applied in the EMI shielding, temperature control and thermal storage fields in the future.

Processing transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) inks into large-area functional coatings expects promising potential for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and infrared stealth. However, the coating performances, especially for scalable fabrication techniques, are greatly constrained by the flake size and stacking manner of MXene. Herein, the large-area production of highly densified and oriented MXene coatings is demonstrated by engineering interfacial interactions of small MXene flakes with catecholamine molecules. The catecholamine molecules can micro-crosslink MXene nanosheets, significantly improving the ink's rheological properties. It favors the shear-induced sheet arrangement and inhibition of structural defects in the blade coating process, making it possible to achieve high orientation and densification of MXene assembly by either large-area coating or patterned printing. Interestingly, the MXene/catecholamine coating exhibits high conductivity of up to 12 247 S cm −1 and ultrahigh specific EMI shielding effectiveness of 2.0 ×10 5 dB cm 2 g −1 , obviously superior to most of the reported MXene materials. Furthermore, the regularly assembled structure also endows the MXene coatings with low infrared emissivities for infrared stealth applications. Therefore, MXene/catecholamine coatings with ultraefficient EMI shielding and low infrared emissivity prove the feasibility of applications in aerospace, military, and wearable devices.

Smart electromagnetic shielding materials have attracted great attention in increasingly complex electromagnetic environments. In addition, impact protection is also highly important for precision instruments to avoid mechanical injury. However, it is rare and challenging to enable anti-impact behavior and adjustable electromagnetic shielding into one soft hydrogel. Herein, a graphene-assisted smart electromagnetic shielding hydrogel with post-tunable mechanical behaviors and impact resistance is successfully prepared through the precipitation polymerization of the methacrylamide in binary solvents of water and dimethyl sulfoxide. The precipitation polymerization imparts the hydrogels with a unique spherical molecular network conformation, which enables high and tough mechanical performance, impact resistance, anti-swelling, and structural stability. Moreover, the hydrogels demonstrate excellent electromagnetic shielding performance, mechanical anti-interference, and low-temperature resistance. More importantly, the hydrogels possess solvent-response reversible on–off electromagnetic shielding and a post-tunable mechanical performance (Elastic modulus from 0.14 MPa to 37.13 MPa, tensile strength from 70 kPa to 1400 kPa). It is envisioned that the strategy of the impact-resistant and switchable electromagnetic shielding hydrogel would provide an insightful outlook for constructing promising electromagnetic shielding and impact-resistance materials.

The weak interfacial bonding between carbon fiber (CF) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has constrained the mechanical performance and multifunctional potential of the CF reinforced PEEK composites. To overcome this challenge, an environmentally sustainable surface modification strategy for CF was developed, leveraging the synergy of cross-dimensional nanomaterials. Unlike conventional approaches where conductive carbon black (CB) is dispersed in resin matrices, this work pioneers the use of surface-charge-modified CB for direct fiber interfacial enhancement. Using the electrostatic self-assembly method, two-dimensional negatively charged MXene nanosheets and zero-dimensional positively charged conductive CB particles were precisely anchored onto the CF surface through electrostatic interactions. The innovative synergy of the cross-dimensional dual nanomaterials simultaneously enhanced the mechanical and electromagnetic shielding properties of the CF/PEEK composites. Compared with the unmodified CF/PEEK composite, the maximum improvements in flexural strength, flexural modulus, and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the composite after modification were 73.4 %, 47.72 %, and 60.27 %, respectively. This is achieved through the synergistic effects of mechanical interlocking, electrostatic interactions, van der Waals forces, along with hydrogen bonds. Meanwhile, the optimal electromagnetic shielding performance of the modified composite reached 31.04 dB at the X-band, representing an increase of 33.56 %, which can mainly be ascribed to the uniform distribution of nanomaterials that enhance the conduction loss and multiple reflections. This scalable and eco-friendly pathway holds considerable application potential for constructing integrated structural-functional CF/PEEK composites.

Designing degradable foams with excellent Joule heating and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties are crucial for protecting both the environment and low-temperature sensitive electronic devices. In this work, we used 1,3-diaminopropane carbamate (DPC) as a latent foaming-curing agent to prepare soft-hard tunable, degradable bio-based epoxy foams through one-step chemical foaming method. Subsequently, using F3 foam with outstanding reversible compressibility as the substrate, we developed a silver-plated foam, F3A3, with predominantly reflective and high EMI shielding performance via silver mirror reaction. The silver-plated foam F3A3 exhibited an electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 76.37 dB in the X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz), achieving a shielding efficiency as high as 99.99999%. Additionally, under an input voltage of 1.0 V, the surface saturation temperature of F3A3 rapidly increased from room temperature to 104.0 °C and demonstrated excellent stability and durability in low-voltage Joule heating. Due to the presence of dynamic ester bonds and tertiary amine structures in the F3A3 foam, it exhibited catalyst-free self-healing capability. These superior properties make the silver-plated foam highly promising for applications in military equipment, aerospace, and wearable electronic devices.

Delignified wood with 3D porous structure provides a good platform for constructing multifunctional electromagnetic shielding materials. The objective of this work is to fabricate a non-carbonized nanostructured wood composite by in-situ polymerization of aniline in H 3 PO 4 acidic medium for flame retardancy and electromagnetic shielding. The wood aerogel with hierarchical porous structure after removing lignin and hemicellulose is almost composed of cellulose and provided a satisfactory 3D network structure. The wood porous channels were coated with polyaniline (PANI) by in-situ polymerization providing a high conductivity (22.07 S/m). The polyaniline-wood aerogel (PANI-WA) with a thickness of 2–3 mm showed a good electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness of 27.63 dB in the X band (8.2–12.4 GHz). Notably, the material simultaneously possesses excellent flame retardancy, which can self-extinguish and retain its original shape after repeated ignition. PANI-WA also exhibits the ability of photothermal conversion under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. The interesting PANI-WA has a good potential application for electromagnetic shielding materials with flame retardancy and photothermal conversion under NIR.

While human skin regulates body temperature and protects the organism, robots also need multifunctional skin that can protect their internal electronics. Currently, most of the research on robotic skin focuses on the limbs with the aim of improving their sensory functions. There is a lack of a robotic skin with protective features that can be applied to the whole body. In some complex working environments, too high or too low temperatures can directly jeopardize the operation of the robot's internal circuitry. In addition, ubiquitous electromagnetic waves can damage the electronic system of robots. Therefore, an e-skin that protects the robot from external factors was desired. In this study, with reference to the structure of human skin, a gallium-based liquid metal and a bismuth-based low-melting-point alloy were combined to prepare a highly thermally conductive e-skin that can withstand both thermal shock and low temperature. This skin not only features thermal management, but also touch positioning and electromagnetic shielding . The development of multifunctional robot skin (MFR skin) will extend the service life of robots, broaden their application areas, and enable future robots to replace humans to accomplish more complex and operationally difficult tasks.

In light of advancements in electronic skins (E-skins), their application in extreme environments poses significant challenges. Inspired by real human skin, we have developed a hierarchical structured electronic skin that utilizes flexible carbon fiber fabric as a framework. Copper nanoflakes and embedded sensors function as the neural layer, while Ethylene Vinyl Acetate acts as the dermal layer, and Polytetrafluoroethylene is employed as the epidermal layer. The reported E-skin demonstrates outstanding flexibility, excellent heat resistance, robust mechanical properties (fracture strength of 1600 MPa, Young's modulus approximately 3.8 GPa), exceptional bending/compression strain performance, excellent hydrophobicity (water contact angle of 120°), effective electromagnetic shielding performance (approximately 45 dB total shielding effectiveness for X-band), and electromagnetic wave absorption capability. Additionally, this E-skin possesses self-healing properties, capable of restoring to its original hydrophobic state within 30 s under a 9V voltage through the Joule heating effect, complemented by corresponding theoretical and mathematical modeling. This E-skin introduces a novel, environmentally friendly, and operationally simple strategy for enhancing the extreme environment resistance and durability of flexible devices.

Lightweight materials with favorable mechanical, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and thermal insulation performance are highly desirable for applications in harsh environments. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-derived carbon nanofibers/carbon foams containing hollow closed microspheres have been developed, and their balanced multifunction is noteworthy. The addition of CNFs resulted in a gradual enhancement of the specific compressive strength of carbon foams, reaching a maximum value of 26.6 MPa·cm 3 ·g −1 with content of 3 wt.% CNFs, improved by as much as 62%, compared to that of pristine carbon foam. Additionally, the fracture toughness exhibited the maximum fracture energy absorption of 118.6 MJ‧m −3 at 3 wt.% CNFs. The appropriate amount of CNFs and hollow carbon microspheres resulted in effective toughening and strengthening of carbon foams. Incorporation of CNFs into carbon foams also resulted in an improvement in their electromagnetic shielding performance, with a maximum EMI-shielding effectiveness of 65.8 dB. Reflection loss was the main contributor to electromagnetic shielding efficiency. Furthermore, carbon foams presented remarkable high-temperature thermal insulation, with a minimum thermal conductivity of merely 0.509 W·m −1 ·K −1 at 800 °C. They exhibited the ability to withstand the butane flame ablation at 1000 °C, which substantiated the potential of carbon foams for aerospace applications.

Graphene films have been considered excellent candidates for thermal management and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials due to their outstanding flexibility, exceptional thermal conductivity, and electrical conductivity. In this study, lignin, a biomass carbon precursor, was added as a welding agent to graphene oxide (GO), and the graphene composite films with enhanced performance were obtained through multi-step high-temperature annealing. Lignin assisted the assembly of GO through hydrogen bonds and covalent bonds, resulting in more compact and ordered precursor films. During the annealing process, lignin played a welding role by synergistically crystallizing with GO, which not only repaired the defects in the graphene sheets but also connected adjacent graphene sheets to form larger sheets. As a result, the graphene composite film achieved a 30.3% improvement in thermal conductivity (1462 W m −1 K −1 ), a 50.0% increase in electrical conductivity (1.49 × 10 6 S m −1 ), and an excellent EMI shielding effectiveness of up to 70.3 dB. Moreover, the composite film exhibited excellent flexibility, with almost no decrease in electrical conductivity after 100,000 folding cycles. This dual-functional graphene film offers a new solution to the heat dissipation challenges and electromagnetic pollution issues posed by the integrated development of electronics, with potential applications in advanced devices, portable equipment, and aerospace fields.

The miniaturization, intense integration, and high-density power of modern electronic and energy devices necessitate extensive management of thermal energy and electromagnetic waves. Creating lightweight, stable, and multifunctional materials to meet these demands remains a challenge. Here, we describe preparing graphene aerogel through the condensation dehydration of hydrophilic polymers and further forming scenario-adaptive multifunctional films through 2500 °C heat treatment and paraffin hybridization. The graphene materials exhibit extensive thermal management with high performances covering high thermal conductivity (up to 76.4 W·m −1 ·K −1 ), superior heat dissipation, tunable electro-thermal conversion, cycling heat storage, and flame retardancy. Additionally, they provide tunable and effective electromagnetic interference shielding performances with high specific shielding effectiveness (up to an average of 91.6 dB, maximum of 123 dB) in a wide frequency range, featuring anti-corrosive absorption-dominant shielding across the X-band, Ku-band, and K-band. Surface engineering of graphene including tuning surface chemical groups and interface couplings contributes to flexible thermal management and electromagnetic shielding. This work might offer a green strategic approach to developing extensive thermal and electromagnetic wave managements of graphene materials.

With the rapid development of communication and electronic devices, it is desirable for carbon fiber (CF) reinforced composites exhibiting good mechanical properties and electromagnetic shielding performance simultaneously. Graphene oxide (GO)/ZnO/DSPE heterogeneous structure has been designed and prepared for enhancing mechanical strength and electromagnetic shielding properties of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP). Zinc oxide nanowires (ZnO NWs) uniformly, firmly, and vertically aligned on the surface of CF assisted by GO and polymer film phospholipid-polyethylene glycol (DSPE). The flexural strength (945.3 MPa), flexural modulus (75.5 GPa) and interlamellar shear strength (92.9 MPa) of the modified composite were increased by 71.8%, 90.2%, and 93.5%, respectively, compared with the untreated composites. Moreover, the CF composite also showed a strong electromagnetic absorption capacity; its electromagnetic shielding efficiency reached 42.89 dB, compared to the original fiber composite, increased by 65.40%. The enhancement could be attributed to a more conductive path in the composites originating from GO nanosheet and DSPE, effective reflection of vertical alignment ZnO on CF.
